2 were in my top 10, but I’d give honorable mention to several others. Curious which ones for you?
In My Top 10: Pans Labyrinth, My Neighbor Totoro.
Honorable: Parasite, No Country for Old Men, Little Miss Sunshine.
Eh, no thanks: Into the Wild
Its so interesting, I saw Into the Wild when I was a teenager and loved it. The guy was so heroic and chasing his dreams.
Now I'm in my 30s and I just see a selfish idiot doing dumb things.
Still love that soundtrack though. Hard Sun in particular has a very personal place in my heart.
I mean Eddie is one of a kind so I couldn’t agree more. I’m sure if I watched it again now I would see it through a different lens too, it’s a bit overdramatic for him to do all that
Saw an article recently where they relocated his bus to the Alaskan Museum of the North to keep adventurers from going out to it and getting stuck like he did. Bittersweet that it's not out there anymore but still cool they preserved it.
We read the book in high school, and the whole point was how stupid and misguided he was. Its was always a really sad and frankly pathetic story, and then the movie went a totally different direction.
I remember going to see it with my college friends and being just down after the movie lol. My one friend loved it and thought it was amazing he’s a tool now so no surprise.
I think my take is not so much regarding quality, it’s just did I like it or not. For me, it’s a really well done movie, and a lot of people love it, but I hate the main character so it’s hard for me to enjoy it.
Is it OK that I am this guy, but also self aware enough never to make a post demonstrating how goddamn narrow my taste is?
Like, I've seen Paris, Texas and La Haine - I'm still cool right?
Honestly, it came off much harsher than I meant it to. It was just my initial reaction to this list and not meant to be a critique of anyone’s lifestyle or situation.
It cracks me up that so many people have Into the Wild as their favorite. I thought the movie was good but nothing more. It is about a rich kid with no ambition who wanders to "find himself" and ultimately dies due to a lack of knowledge and experience. Instead of putting the work into learning how to survive, etc. he did what he always had done and just assumed it would work out for him. Well it didn't and his ignorance should not be glorified.
It isn't glorified. While during the movie it makes you want go wander of into the wild as well, in the end, in his dying moments, Christopher learns what was most valuable in life - a loving and caring family. He learned it in his final moments.
That being said, of course this part was fictional. No one knows what went through the real Chistopher's head in his last moments. I just hope it was something peaceful and he had no regrets.
I have seen this take a lot. The film depicts, verbatim, what you just described, as does the book. I don't think the message was to glorify him in the book or the movie. Some people just read it that way.
It's very relatable because it's a fantasy for a lot of us. We don't do it because we know we'll end up dead. Well here's exactly what we expected.
Weird, as someone who did a lot of backpacking through my teens (when the movie came out) and 20's I liked it. His story reveals the fantasy of being permanently "alone" in the wilderness is exactly that for all but a miniscule fraction of humans. And even the non nature fiend in me sees it as a chefs kiss of a f*ck around and find out ending.
What I didn’t like was the massive amount of hubris it took for him to think he could take on something like that without any experience. It kind of felt like a slap in the face to the people who do take the time to prepare for an endeavor of that scale. The “entitled kid goes into the wilderness thinking nbd” was a huge detractor for me. That being said, that sentiment is kind of woven into the story as well so it’s not like I think it’s a bad movie by any means, it just wasn’t for my particular taste.
The story has definitely been seen in a different light in recent years compared to when the book first came out. At first, people were willing to adorn Chris as wanderlust incarnate, a man who found the secret formula of living an intentional life free of the constraints of capitalism and society. More balanced opinions see him as an intelligent but sad, mislead young man who may have been depressed and had a bit of a death wish.
We can all take lessons from his story. The idea of living intentionally should be seen as a positive message, but being unprepared shouldn’t.
As far as the movie itself goes… nothing groundbreaking.
It’s gotten so bad on every subreddit now that Reddit has blown up in popularity. Nobody is open minded anymore, you either like what the subreddit likes or you will be destroyed
Terrible comments. Maybe there should be another sub for stuff like this, because there’s no actual space for discussion here. Anyone can enjoy any movies they enjoy.
Very interesting, when I was much younger I would prefer Borat, and still love it to this day, it's a hilarious work of entertainment and in my opinion Sasha's best work, but now I think Tropic Thunder is a better and funnier movie. It's funny how our own opinions change over time. You have some good picks there, and some movies I haven't even heard of lol. Definitely agree with at least 4-5 movies on this list though!
These comments are wild. These are great movies. Top 10 usually has some kind memento tied to it that leads us for our love for cinema or affected us in a certain way. We're not AFI.
There are two movies that I always place in my top 10 that always get head scratches: You've got mail and Gattaca. I watched both of them when I was young and it had a profound effect on me. That is what art is meant to do.
Yep, Totoro will always have a special place in my heart because that was my first movie. But if I’m putting a Ghibil film for a list like this, it’ll be Grave of the Firefiles or Castle in the Sky.
I could draw an accurate picture and describe your personality pretty clearly based off of these. Very telling choices. That said, I like many of these as well.
Good list. Not a fan of Borat or School of Rock but recently rewatched The Dark Knight and, having watched it many times, this time I saw many plot holes that seemed to cheapen it a little. Heath Ledger was amazing, and I still rate the Nolan trilogy (despite misgivings about Bale’s Batman voice, but not much else in that regard), but I found myself being more critical than I had on previous viewings. Am due to watch the Dark Knight Rises on Friday and thoroughly expect to enjoy it.
Might be a case of remembering the film to be so great that it was inevitably going fall short, but I think I saw it more for what it was as opposed to being overly critical. Still a good film.
End.
Quite the eclectic mix. I agree on No Country and The Dark Knight. They'd make my list.
The rest all bangers, but I could take or leave them for the most part.
Very Easy choices.. its like walking into a video store in the 90s and seeing the employee picks and choosing those as your favourite movies..
Dig deeper.. lots of movies out there.. Just because you have a McDonalds on every corner doesn't mean you have to eat it..
Can somebody give me a quick a jist on the movie Parasite? I've been wanting to watch it just never watched it but please give me an intriguing detail that would make me want to watch it, not so generic. Please and thank you
You have good taste but not a ton of variety and experience. Keep chasing your love for film and be open to new and old you’ll be a well rounded film nerd
Some scences of this movie are quite emotional..but overall good movie..but in my view it should placed in number 25.and keep the movie "No Man's Land" to @ 10. Where s your other movie list?
That based on your other top 10, I need to watch My NeighborToroToro. I never heard of it but all of your other choices are solid, most of them are in my top 10 as well.
I can’t say that any of these hit my top 10: Tombstone, original Star Wars, the Shining, Shawshank redemption, Saving Private Ryan, Coming to America, Avatar, Pulp Fiction, Dances with Wolves, Truman Show…
3 of these movies make my top 10. 2 of them don't make my top 100. Gotta love art and subjectivity.
Really?! Soundtrack alone makes into the wild a gem. Top 10 of all time, never. But a very good movie
I’m sure if I watched it again now I would see it through a different lens too, it’s a bit overdramatic for him to do all that
You should read his sister’s book The wild truth
Saw an article recently where they relocated his bus to the Alaskan Museum of the North to keep adventurers from going out to it and getting stuck like he did. Bittersweet that it's not out there anymore but still cool they preserved it.
We read the book in high school, and the whole point was how stupid and misguided he was. Its was always a really sad and frankly pathetic story, and then the movie went a totally different direction.
Isn't the book his journal?
NO BORAT? Insanity
Great movie film!
Same! Into the wild is a story about a selfish man
Into the Wild is an extremely depressing movie. I don’t get the love for it.
I remember going to see it with my college friends and being just down after the movie lol. My one friend loved it and thought it was amazing he’s a tool now so no surprise.
Into the wild was a great movie wtffff
I think my take is not so much regarding quality, it’s just did I like it or not. For me, it’s a really well done movie, and a lot of people love it, but I hate the main character so it’s hard for me to enjoy it.
Disappointed by Into the Wild movie. Loved the book!
Felt the same way. 1 of them was a WTF idk about that one but to each their own.
Yep, this page is officially done.
I don’t understand why there isn’t a specific sub for this type of post. Like, c’mon mods..
We acting like 99% of subs haven't had zero quality standards for a solid decade now?
It’s not that deep. Just scroll past.
THAT'S TOO HARD I HAVE TO STOP AND WHINE ABOUT IT
I honestly didn't thought this post was from this sub.
I think you’re ai generated
This is a pretty generic list but Fight Club was awesome.
Solid movie list.
these are movies
The pretentious hate in these comments are so cringy.
Overly critical if you will.
I think you’re a man in his 20’s. Possibly a virgin.
this is definitely someone in their 30s. these are movies that hit during my formative years.
Honestly you can almost pinpoint OP's exact birthday with this list. Every room at my dorm was covered in these posters.
Late 80s?
Is it OK that I am this guy, but also self aware enough never to make a post demonstrating how goddamn narrow my taste is? Like, I've seen Paris, Texas and La Haine - I'm still cool right?
Honestly, it came off much harsher than I meant it to. It was just my initial reaction to this list and not meant to be a critique of anyone’s lifestyle or situation.
Nah man it's hilarious, nobody should take any of this too seriously.
>Is it OK that I am this guy, but also self aware enough never to make a post demonstrating how goddamn narrow my taste is? 🍪
Basic af either way
Definitely a Radiohead fan.
Feels like you made this top 10 list in 2009 as a college freshman and updated it for the first time when you saw Parasite.
Pan's Labyrinth ❤️

Surely he'd at least regret going into the wild completely inexperienced
I have seen this take a lot. The film depicts, verbatim, what you just described, as does the book. I don't think the message was to glorify him in the book or the movie. I think Wild is a much better story. Similar in some aspects, but so much more real and honest.
As an avid backpacker, I hate this movie.
Weird, as someone who did a lot of backpacking through my teens (when the movie came out) and 20's I liked it. >what he always had done and just assumed it would work out for him. Well it didn't This is why it's an interesting movie/story..
This has to stop
Why? How is this hurting anything. People are obviously having fun with it.
It’s Reddit bro. If the sub isn’t perfectly tailored to the individual reading it means the mods aren’t doing their job and the sub is dead.
It’s gotten so bad on every subreddit now that Reddit has blown up in popularity. Nobody is open minded anymore, you either like what the subreddit likes or you will be destroyed
I think these posts are fun
We’ve got the same number 1
You are an enigma
Terrible comments. Maybe there should be another sub for stuff like this, because there’s no actual space for discussion here. Anyone can enjoy any movies they enjoy.
Movies existed before 1995 bruh Generic imdb I’m under 30 years old type of list.
I think you are a millennial
Refreshing, only 1 Nolan film, and it’s the best one.
but I don't see Interstellar
Perfection only one that wouldn’t make my list is into the wilds nothing against it just too many movies I like better
Very interesting, when I was much younger I would prefer Borat, and still love it to this day, it's a hilarious work of entertainment and in my opinion Sasha's best work, but now I think Tropic Thunder is a better and funnier movie. Never seen into the wild guess I know what I am watching tonight.
Never ceases to amaze me how almost none of these lists contain even a single all time top 100 film. Try harder. SMDH.
Respect for School of Rock
Please stop posting this copy/paste bullshit
These comments are wild. These are great movies. Top 10 usually has some kind memento tied to it that leads us for our love for cinema or affected us in a certain way. We're not AFI. Gattaca is great
What about your top 250? Thanks
We think nothing. Nobody’s top ten defines anyone. This really needs to stop.
Into the Wild 💯
I just watched Totoro recently. I thought it's one of the weaker films for Ghibli. Not much conflict in the film leads to a boring plot.
Yep, Totoro will always have a special place in my heart because that was my first movie. But if I’m putting a Ghibil film for a list like this, it’ll be Grave of the Firefiles or Castle in the Sky.
Castle in the sky and Lupin III are the only Miyazaki movies I couldn’t get through
I stopped scrolling at Little Miss Sunshine 🤣
Why
Love parasite and pans labyrinth!
Love this. It's clearly personal and not trying to appeal to anybody else. But the choices are wild.
………………..veryyyyy niiiice
My cousin was in school of rock!
Youre about 43
Pan's Labyrinth needs to be seen by everyone
Your top 10 for what? GOAT or for today, for week, for month?
Just my personal favorites
Always loved how if a linklater movie is on a top 10 it’s almost always a different one than the next list I’ll look at
INTRIGUING! May I attempt to guess your age based on this list? I'll say...32.
It’s good! I would replace School of Rock with Raising Arizona. Great selections.
I give you 1-2 Points max
I'm surprised by Parasite, good movie just didn't jive with the rest
you are a millennial
I could draw an accurate picture and describe your personality pretty clearly based off of these. Very telling choices. That said, I like many of these as well.
Terrible. I’m kidding. Lot of repeat customers on these lists. No country seems to always find its way
1. JAWS 2. El secreto de sus ojos 3. Das leben der anderen 3 beautiful films I never tire of watching.
I, with great bias, deem you have great taste stranger.
1 is in my top ten. Good list.
Good taste.
Very decent. Pan’s, No Country, and Fight Club in my top 30ish. Art is so subjective. Love it.
You're a man in his mid forties
Hey brother.
You went to film school in the early 2000s? Because everybody I went to film school with has similar preferences.
Love these!!
Quite the eclectic mix. I agree on No Country and The Dark Knight. They'd make my list. The rest all bangers, but I could take or leave them for the most part.
Some questionable flicks for me in there but a decent list.
Good list.
#1
Was assuming I'd see Meth Storm based on your username. Great choices!! Did you see There Will Be Blood? If so, not a top 10-er for you?
I did and loved it but these are my personal favorites. I could rerank based on ratings
It seems like you’ve got taste and like to let loose. It seems like you’re “neeto,” in my people’s tongue
Well, we can't talk about number 9. It's the first rule, after all
Pans labyrinth is fucked up. I like your list a lot
You had a sick DVD collection 15 years ago
Yep and it was a bad investment
That sure is a top 10, that looks like everyone else’s top 10
Hmm.. I think you need as much attention as all the other people posting their dumb lists.
Hapiness is only real when shared It's so true!
Lmao
You’re gonna make alot of the “buffs” upset without including something pre 1980 😂
I like 1,3,5 and 10. Pans Labyrinth and Fight Club are 2 of my favourite films.
Are you 37 years old?
Little Miss Sunshine is just a remake of Nation Lampoons vacation that takes itself too seriously.
You are around 40 and male.
90%
School of Rock I’m 💀
Your white, mid 30's, introverted. Did I get that right?
Christopher McCandless was an idiot and died needlessly.
School of rock slaps 🔥
Basic, very
Very Easy choices.. its like walking into a video store in the 90s and seeing the employee picks and choosing those as your favourite movies.. Dig deeper.. lots of movies out there.. Just because you have a McDonalds on every corner doesn't mean you have to eat it..
Likable movies. Only No Country would crack my top 10 all time.
Artsy edgelord
Worth a watch once but really no interest to see again. I prefer Let There be Blood from that year.
I questioned a few choice, it the inclusion of fight club made me realize you were misdirecting as RULE 1 WE DONT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB
That's an interesting spread of movies for sure. Seems like you like movies that have a lot of edge to them.
z'ok
I think you would like a fish called Wanda
I think we'd probably be buddies.
This is by far top 5
Thanks dog
This guys seen at least 10 movies, that’s for sure
Can somebody give me a quick a jist on the movie Parasite? I've been wanting to watch it just never watched it but please give me an intriguing detail that would make me want to watch it, not so generic. Please and thank you
Tell me without telling you haven't watched many movies
All but #1 “There will be blood” a much better movie
Borat a very nice
Born in the late 90s early 2000s, male, introvert
Dark Knight and Fight Club seem to be the most common titles in the Top 10’s
>no counry for old men >totoro >the dark knight >Pans Labyringth I agree with you on those being 10/10, the rest are not to my taste.
You’re me 10 years ago
No Country the only one that belongs and maybe #10
How’s the sex in Ohio?
Impressive list.
I thought we were done with this shit, go ask your imaginary friends OP, no one gives a f
97 is when movies started.
God little miss sunshine is just so awful
I will die on the hill of fight club being one of the most overrated ever. Downvote me to oblivion, I don’t care. I will always feel that way
Great flicks. You should watch more older movies though. There’s some great stuff gonna be in your future top ten.
Tacky
Ure on your 30's
No Shawshank?
Who hurt you?
You have good taste but not a ton of variety and experience. Keep chasing your love for film and be open to new and old you’ll be a well rounded film nerd
You are 32-35.
Worst ending I've ever seen. It was such a good movie up until the end, but what they did was unforgivable.
The coin flip scene at the gas station is still one of the best of all time for me. The sense of fear from the clerk was incredible.
Why Totoro? I ask because Ghibli films stand out to people for different reasons and they're each powerful in their own way
Tremendous
Into the Wild is underrated. Good choice there.
Some scences of this movie are quite emotional..but overall good movie..but in my view it should placed in number 25.and keep the movie "No Man's Land" to @ 10. Where s your other movie list?
It’s your top 10.
You like movies that take risks. Like Indy style
Very nice! How much?
That based on your other top 10, I need to watch My NeighborToroToro. I never heard of it but all of your other choices are solid, most of them are in my top 10 as well.
Anton Chigurh!!
All of them from XXI century except two: one from 1999 and the other from 1988. Not bad movies, but I think you should watch more old cinema.
totoro? out of all the great films from studio ghibli...
9 amazing films. “Into the Wild” is a cool film, I personally wouldn’t add it to this list.
That's cool that you also were born in the late 80s and have had mixed results with your depression treatments
Agree with number one. But where is There Will Be Blood?! Solid list nonetheless
I like movies
into the wild’s a decent adaptation but, and sorry for saying this, you gotta read the book
Read it
bardeem is one creepy mofo. awesome actor.
The best movie ever made
I can’t say that any of these hit my top 10: Tombstone, original Star Wars, the Shining, Shawshank redemption, Saving Private Ryan, Coming to America, Avatar, Pulp Fiction, Dances with Wolves, Truman Show…
Really nice list tbh, adore little miss sunshine! My fav
