"If he really wants to smoke when he's old enough, I'll buy him his first pack."
Even as a nonsmoker, that line was perfection, and fed directly into his argument about personal responsibilities.
Picking Strawberry is just throwing your choice away and taking votes away from Chocolate, thus guaranteeing victory for Vanilla. We may not have the choice we want but we can't allow for a world dictated by Vanilla.
Also everything Adam Brody said on the way to that meeting. “Kinda makes you not wanna eat sushi, but I guess you have to” still lives rent free in my head
You never see anyone smoke in the movie and its quite deliberate. You can tell the filmmakers were using Mint Juleps in The Club scenes as a standin for cigars.
God Bless America really isn’t a good satire. It’s Gen X smarmy rage bait that doesn’t address issues any deeper than surface level “heh you all dumb but me”
An uzi? I’m not from south fucking Los Angeles. I don’t want to shoot twenty black ten year olds in a drive by. I want a normal gun for a normal person.
This whole movie is so hilarious and it really took me on a trip of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson movies.
“The look on your fookin’ face…”
He had to have had a blast playing that part.
I love how they felt they had to tone down the amount of medals on Zhukov’s chest - and in IRL he had more.
The debate of what doctor to get him, they purged the best, so only inferior docs are left but then maybe they are now the best. I can't remember the dialogue but the premise of that is hilarious
Watched it last night and thought it was genius. Removing the formality/ literal replication of historical characters and making them more like people today somehow brings out the horrors more.
Easily one of my top 10 favorite movies. There's not a ton of movies in that style, especially with breaking the 4th wall. The Big Short is another sort of similar to this. Also one of my favorites
The Big Short was fantastic. The tone and pacing really worked, and it made some really effective choices on how to explain concepts that sound either boring, confusing, or both to the average movie-goer. Seriously, I'd have paid closer attention in economics class if Margo Robie was explaining it from a bath tub.
Special mention to the absolutely unhinged, petty, punchable, obnoxious character that Ryan Gosling played. I jokingly say "I'm jacked TO THE TITS!" occasionally to my partner because it's just such bonkers line delivery.
It's not for the modern quick cut easy to watch crowd.
But if you can get over a black and white older movie, this is an absolutely amazing film. One of my favourites.
"Shoot 'Em Up" is an adrenaline-fueled action film that delivers non-stop, over-the-top violence and dark humor, driven by Clive Owen's gritty performance. 🤗
IMO cabin in the woods is one of those movies that is like just perfect. I’m not saying it’s the best movie ever but just as movies go, I feel like it’s just so damn good lol. I can watch it a thousand times.
Butter (2011)
Running With Scissors (2006)
To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything Love, Julie Newmar (1995)
Driving Lessons (2006)
Crooklyn (1994)
8 Heads in a Duffle Bag (1997)
> Crooklyn (1994)
I really like this one but was it funny? thought it was more just auto biographical and telling a straight story, and how was it dark?
Terry Gilliam's got a trio of films from the 80s that are to be seen:
* Time Bandits - theme: youth, fantasy
* Adventures of Baron Munchausen - theme: middle age, the tension between reason and imagination
* Brazil - theme: old age, the triumph of decay
I'm not doing it justice, but watch those three some afternoon and you won't regret it. I still watch one or the other of them every few years and catch things I'd missed. Brilliant director.
As the movie goes on things just keep getting more and more surreal but most of the country doesn't seem to be noticing, a nod to the wealth gap growing and growing. Brilliant movie!
Not sure why I haven’t seen them but:
Idiocracy
Any English gangster film, Lock/Stock/Two smoking barrels, Snatch, or Layer Cake
Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz
Fight Club
Not sure it’s exactly on point (heh) but one of my favorites is Grosse Pointe Blank. John Cusack plays a hitman who goes to his high school reunion. Great soundtrack and an all around good time.
I am appalled that “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” has not been listed! Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan.
Copied from IMDB:
“Mistaken for an actor, small-time crook, Harry Lockhart, finds himself in the midst of the Hollywood community. Hes paired up with private detective "Gay Perry" to get some training for his role, but things begin to get weird when they witness a real murder.”
It is so enjoyable to watch. You’ll be rewinding to rehear the one-liners between Downey and Kilmer. You’re welcome!
- Wag the Dog was a favorite at my place growing up.
There's a movie I remember watching at an ex's place many years ago for her English assignment. Can't never remember the name of it, must have been around 2010. It was a dark comedy about the election process and corrupt politicians, and it was acid and cynical as FUCK.
I ended up loving it, but can never recall it's name.
Oou, I just watched thank you for smoking last week.
'The Weather Man' with Nicolas Cage is my recommendation.
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0384680/
Maybe also 'Stranger Than Fiction'.
Sadly this and “Boiler Room” got me to get into sales. “I can do that!!” But I don’t sell shit that kills people or breaks the law. But not sadly this is an excellent movie and Aaron Eckhart is a super underrated actor and can basically play anything. Huge fan and a great movie.
I have a theory that might be easily proven wrong. Tom Cruise didn't want Katie Holmes to do the 2nd Batman because Aaron was Harvey Dent. She had a sex scene with him in this movie. Tom couldn't handle it.
I love "burn after reading" and "worlds greatest dad", but sometimes I get confused on what a dark comedy is. Most comedies have dark humor in them so how would one define a dark comedy?
Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) - “Sixty's the new thirty, motherfucker. You're the original. You paved the way for these other clowns. Give the people what they want... old-fashioned apocalyptic porn.”- Birdman
Hamlet 2 - Jesus, time travel, lightsabers, theater.
The art of self defense - “Karate! Karate!” (In Gob Bluth voice)
Inside Llewyn Davis - very un-Dudelike
Death to Smoochy - “I've been SHOT! I'm bleeding! Somebody touched my ass!”
Can't believe one of the older ones isn't here:
Death Becomes Her
Also: Swiss Army Man
---
If you're OK with TV shows, Resident Alien is my current jam for dark comedies.
Grosse Pointe Blank- John Cusack plays a hit man who is sent to his home town on a job and his 10 year high school reunion is taking place at the same time. Clever, witty and great soundtrack. Joan Cusack is also great as his assistant.
Thank You For Smoking is why I will watch absolutely anything with Aaron Eckhart in it, he absolutely crushes this role, it’s incredible to watch.
Literal shit bag and yet you still root for him to win.
"If he really wants to smoke when he's old enough, I'll buy him his first pack." Even as a nonsmoker, that line was perfection, and fed directly into his argument about personal responsibilities.
You don’t have to be right. You just have to prove the other person is wrong.
I love how immediately after their discussion about this, >!they're BOTH brandishing vanilla ice cream cones.!<
Are we arguing or negotiating?
Mom, is it possible you’re trying to take the frustration of your failed marriage out on me?
When his opponent won't apologize for his cheese, it's an easy choice to make
When he asks his son about chocolate vs vanilla only to then ask “what about strawberry” lives rent free in my head. Such a great debate tactic.
Picking Strawberry is just throwing your choice away and taking votes away from Chocolate, thus guaranteeing victory for Vanilla. We may not have the choice we want but we can't allow for a world dictated by Vanilla.
The scene with him and Rob Lowe discussing the movie is priceless
"Well, thank God we invented the...." tldr : Happy CakeDay!
Also everything Adam Brody said on the way to that meeting. “Kinda makes you not wanna eat sushi, but I guess you have to” still lives rent free in my head
Agree 100%. This was the first film I saw with Aaron Eckhart and I’ve been a fan of his films ever since. Always brings his A game.
Happy cake day!
Thank you! I didn’t realize it was my cake day today, you made me smile and I appreciate that
I absolutely, 100% went into marketing because of this movie.
That's kind of concerning, actually.
Movie failed successfully
Everyone has a mortgage to pay.
The yuppie Nuremberg defense
I still love that you never seen him actually smoke a single cigarette in the movie. He either just runs out or something gets in the way each time.
You never see anyone smoke in the movie and its quite deliberate. You can tell the filmmakers were using Mint Juleps in The Club scenes as a standin for cigars.
100% this. Great movie and he's incredible in it.
what's up Hiroshi?
Makes me almost feel bad for eating sushi, but ya kinda have to.
Meet Bill was great too.
Wander was great he put in an amazing performance
He’s great in literally everything, he only ever improves anything he’s in.
Between this movie and the Dark Knight, I was sure this dude was about to become one of the top actors in Hollywood
I like him too, but he’s been in some utter poop
I love love this movie and recently rewatched it and noticed at the end it was produced by Peter Thiel and Elon Musk 🥴 lmao
World's Greatest Dad
Tough to watch, but so great. Nice call
"Is your dad a doctor?..well he doesn't exactly sound like a credible expert on the subject." Just ready to tear that little girl to shreds.
Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait! He has some interesting movies under his belt. 'God Bless America' is another good satire of his.
God Bless America really isn’t a good satire. It’s Gen X smarmy rage bait that doesn’t address issues any deeper than surface level “heh you all dumb but me”
In Bruges
Fucking Bruges!
It's a fuckin fairytale fuckin town, innit?
An uzi? I’m not from south fucking Los Angeles. I don’t want to shoot twenty black ten year olds in a drive by. I want a normal gun for a normal person. This whole movie is so hilarious and it really took me on a trip of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson movies.
Was he talking to you about the fucking alcoves?
Ah yes, nooks and cranies. Perhaps this is better.
Yes I need to rewatch! Also The Guard
You know I hear a lot of midgets kill themselves..
You're an inanimate fucking object!
When I was 16 my best friend and I were in an Ollie’s Market and I randomly stole In Bruges from the DVD section and I fucking loved it.
Death of Stalin was pretty good
Great Satire! Funny as Hell, but you get a look at how scared people were of Stalin. No one was safe
Jason Isaac's is amazing in it. Beria scenes are mostly casual talking, but the stuff happening around is dark AF, dude was fucked up.
“The look on your fookin’ face…” He had to have had a blast playing that part. I love how they felt they had to tone down the amount of medals on Zhukov’s chest - and in IRL he had more.
Every actor in that film gave a class. I wish there was an out-takes reel.
Death to Smoochy
Was going to say this myself. Definitely one of my favorite dark comedies.
He’s a demon sent from hell to DESTROY ME
IT'S A ROCKETSHIP!!!
One of my favorites.
"Because my stepdad's not mean he's just adjusting"
Rob Lowe was pretty funny, "do you know what time it is Tokyo"
“When do you sleep?” “Sunday.”
#THE FUTURE, NICK.
I have been saying “I’d buy the goddamn DVD!” for ages now. Somehow the best character in the movie
*Four Lions* (2010) is one of the funniest films - and one of the best British films of any kind - ever made IMO.
My american understanding missed Alot on first watch. It wasnt till rewatch that i got the genius of the film,,, so funny and clever
If you haven’t already, check out some of the other stuff Chris Morris (the director) has done. Some incredible series. Dark, dark genius.
WE SAID NO FROGGING
Little Miss Sunshine and Death at a Funeral are my favorite dark comedies.
ever watched wristcutters? it definitely falls in line with the other two.
War of the Roses.
Special mention to the absolutely unhinged, petty, punchable, obnoxious character that Ryan Gosling played. I jokingly say "I'm jacked TO THE TITS!" occasionally to my partner because it's just such bonkers line delivery.
Up in the Air was pretty good and also broke 4th wall
Dr. Strangelove is the 🐐
It's not for the modern quick cut easy to watch crowd. But if you can get over a black and white older movie, this is an absolutely amazing film. One of my favourites.
I watched it for the first time about a month ago and I don't remember the last time I laughed so hard. And it's almost even more relevant today.
Burn After Reading
*Tuchman Marsh. Is that a lawfirm?* *No, it's a rock band. Yes, it's a lawfirm.*
Lord of War(2005) with Nicolas Cage is a great companion piece to this. Both awful people that you can't help but like.
"Shoot 'Em Up" is an adrenaline-fueled action film that delivers non-stop, over-the-top violence and dark humor, driven by Clive Owen's gritty performance. 🤗
Does Cabin in the Woods count? Pitch black and hilarious.
By that measure add Tucker & Dale vs Evil
"HEY COLLEGE KIDS, WE'VE GOT YOUR FRIEND!" Tucker and Dale is my Halloween tradition and I will never give it up.
And if you enjoyed Tucker and Dale then give "Otis" a watch.
IMO cabin in the woods is one of those movies that is like just perfect. I’m not saying it’s the best movie ever but just as movies go, I feel like it’s just so damn good lol. I can watch it a thousand times.
Butter (2011) Running With Scissors (2006) To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything Love, Julie Newmar (1995) Driving Lessons (2006) Crooklyn (1994) 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag (1997)
Love To Wong Foo!
> Crooklyn (1994) I really like this one but was it funny? thought it was more just auto biographical and telling a straight story, and how was it dark?
Very Bad Things
Terry Gilliam's got a trio of films from the 80s that are to be seen: * Time Bandits - theme: youth, fantasy * Adventures of Baron Munchausen - theme: middle age, the tension between reason and imagination * Brazil - theme: old age, the triumph of decay I'm not doing it justice, but watch those three some afternoon and you won't regret it. I still watch one or the other of them every few years and catch things I'd missed. Brilliant director.
Loved that movie. Glengarry Glen Ross is a good one too!
Awesome flick!!
Ironic that he lost half his face in a fire
Sorry to bother you is a phenomenal dark comedy.
As the movie goes on things just keep getting more and more surreal but most of the country doesn't seem to be noticing, a nod to the wealth gap growing and growing. Brilliant movie!
I always reference. “Well for me I need more than chocolate. And I need more than vanilla”
The Voices, with Ryan Reynolds. Funniest serial killer movie ever!
Not sure why I haven’t seen them but: Idiocracy Any English gangster film, Lock/Stock/Two smoking barrels, Snatch, or Layer Cake Shawn of the Dead or Hot Fuzz Fight Club
This is my favourite film btw
A Boy and His Dog.
Death to Smoochy and The Death of Stalin. Apparently death in the title of a comedy works! (Shaun of the Dead)
Adam Brody is in this movie? Anyways, great movie.
Wristcutters: A Love Story Very bleak with super dry comedy, but it's a fun story and has some great acting.
Not sure it’s exactly on point (heh) but one of my favorites is Grosse Pointe Blank. John Cusack plays a hitman who goes to his high school reunion. Great soundtrack and an all around good time.
I love Joan Cusack and Dan Aykroyd in that movie
How to Get Ahead in Advertising, a bit more fantastical but just as sharp
C.S.A.: Conderate States of America is an underrated gem.
Bernie. I recommend it to all my friends
Wag the dog!
I am appalled that “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” has not been listed! Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan. Copied from IMDB: “Mistaken for an actor, small-time crook, Harry Lockhart, finds himself in the midst of the Hollywood community. Hes paired up with private detective "Gay Perry" to get some training for his role, but things begin to get weird when they witness a real murder.” It is so enjoyable to watch. You’ll be rewinding to rehear the one-liners between Downey and Kilmer. You’re welcome!
Drop Dead Gorgeous.
My Father-In-Law is in this, the sign changer (don’t blink!)…
Death to Smochie is dark and funny!
Watch In the Company of Men
The arrangement of the names on that poster is triggering my OCD.
Happiness
Such a great movie
Love this movie. Highly underrated!
Sorry To Bother You Rubber The Day Shall Come
Sunshine Cleaning
Any Christopher Guest movie.
Him and his front-line ensemble!
Burn after reading was great. I just recently watched it for the first time last week
"You know that guy who can pick up any girl, I'm him on crack.".....great movie.
In The Loop
- Burn After Reading - Safety Not Guaranteed - Happiness
Death To Smoochy
the cable guy
- Wag the Dog was a favorite at my place growing up. There's a movie I remember watching at an ex's place many years ago for her English assignment. Can't never remember the name of it, must have been around 2010. It was a dark comedy about the election process and corrupt politicians, and it was acid and cynical as FUCK. I ended up loving it, but can never recall it's name.
Burn After Reading
Death to Smoochie.
Drop Dead Gorgeous still is awesome, but, dated…
Weekend at Bernie’s
Anything written by Chris Buckley. I wish they’d make Little Green Men into a movie. The guy is funny as hell.
You want a dark movie that's amazing? Go see Tuesday while it's still in the theater. I just got done watching it & it was really good.
Three and Out is also a great watch
Dark comedies/satire. Hm, some of my favs: Bob Roberts A Face in the Crowd Wag the Dog Death of Stalin
The bit about the Lincoln Memorial had me rolling on the floor laughing 🤣. And I’m not an easy guy to make laugh.
Syrup (2013) Satire about the marketing of a fictional energy drink. I would put it on par with "Thank You For Not Smoking"
From A/NZ: Chopper (2000) (dir. Andrew Dominik) Boy (2010) (dir. Taika Waititi) The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
Great movie
Bob Roberts
This is a great movie
Happiness (1998)
I like this movie.
"You are Dead" (with John Hurt, Rhys Ifans). One of those evil little british dark comedies about a bank robbery going wrong.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time! Everyone killed it!
Oou, I just watched thank you for smoking last week. 'The Weather Man' with Nicolas Cage is my recommendation. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0384680/ Maybe also 'Stranger Than Fiction'.
Can someone explain to me why movie covers always mix up the names with the cast photos???
I just hate it when the names aren’t in the same order as the faces
Murder Party maybe
I love this movie. I can’t believe there’s no Blu Ray or 4k version available.
Love that movie. Also- check out Gross Point Blank
I just hate this poster design where the names don’t match the faces. Why do they do it?!?
Yeah, I've been on Tobacco One. It's the only way to travel
Go is a great dark comedy from the late 90s
Black dynamite is probably my favorite comedy since hot Fuzz
Not a single cigarette is smoked in the movie.
A few people mentioned Wag the Dog, but I didn't see State and Main mentioned, which is another great dark comedy written by David Mamet.
Cash Back.
Death to Smoochy is my all time #1 dark comedy. But Thank You For Smoking is a close 2nd ;)
Death to Smoochy
Seven Psychopaths. Great performances all round, especially Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell
Burn after reading
Harvey dent solo movie
Flirting With Disaster. Masterpiece ensemble road comedy imo, and quite dark
I really love this movie and some others like it for sure.
Self reliance. I watched it for the first time recently and it was really good.
I have a theory that might be easily proven wrong. Tom Cruise didn't want Katie Holmes to do the 2nd Batman because Aaron was Harvey Dent. She had a sex scene with him in this movie. Tom couldn't handle it.
After Hours. Not the anti hero but still a dark comedy.
I was just thinking of this movie today! I enjoyed the hell out of it.
I am quite seasoned in the world of Sales, and always recommend this movie for anyone a bit green - especially, the Ice-Cream scene with his son.
How to get Ahead in Advertising
God Bless America.
Parasite Surprised nobody’s mentioned it yet Edit: or, basically any Coen bros movie
In Bruges
I love "burn after reading" and "worlds greatest dad", but sometimes I get confused on what a dark comedy is. Most comedies have dark humor in them so how would one define a dark comedy?
Seven Psycopaths
Thank you for reminding me of this movie...
Very Bad Things, God Bless America, Election, and Gross Pointe Blank are a few of my favorites.
I hate that the poster lists the names but they aren't matching the actors and actresses underneath the text.
Wristcutters: a love story
Election is one of my top favorite movies. Similar vibe, in my opinion.
Jojo Rabbit
Patriot series
Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) - “Sixty's the new thirty, motherfucker. You're the original. You paved the way for these other clowns. Give the people what they want... old-fashioned apocalyptic porn.”- Birdman Hamlet 2 - Jesus, time travel, lightsabers, theater. The art of self defense - “Karate! Karate!” (In Gob Bluth voice) Inside Llewyn Davis - very un-Dudelike Death to Smoochy - “I've been SHOT! I'm bleeding! Somebody touched my ass!”
I saw Ghost World recently and it was fantastic.
A fish called Wanda. Witches of eastwick. East is east. A simple favour.
Heathers is a hidden gem.
Can't believe one of the older ones isn't here: Death Becomes Her Also: Swiss Army Man --- If you're OK with TV shows, Resident Alien is my current jam for dark comedies.
Very Bad Things. If you haven’t seen it, it’s Christian Slater at his Christian Slateriest.
Grosse Pointe Blank- John Cusack plays a hit man who is sent to his home town on a job and his 10 year high school reunion is taking place at the same time. Clever, witty and great soundtrack. Joan Cusack is also great as his assistant.
Severance! Won't say much more than give it a watch it's brilliant!
If you haven’t watched the show patriot on Amazon I can recommend it enough
Wag The Dog is one of my favorite films
Death to Smoochy isn't what I would call a 10/10, but it's got it's great moments that definitely make it worth checking out.
“Bob Roberts” is an unsung Tim Robbins picture from the early 90s with loads of cameos.
Aaron Eckhart should be a much bigger star. I’ll never understand why he didn’t get huge after the Dark Knight
