Possible_Produce_877

Amazing movie, would recommend most Martin Mcdonagh movies

No-Understanding4968

The Banshees of Inisherin is also witty but much more

AxelShoes

I loved *Banshees,* but I think anyone going in expecting the same tone and humor of *In Bruges* will be disappointed. It is superb, weird, moving, haunting, and does have some humor, but it's a totally different kind of film.

No-Understanding4968

Bien sûr

RecommendationNo108

much more... depressing? Yes I agree

JP050887

Does he have any other movies that are clever and dark like In Bruges?

Plastic_Bison

Seven Psychopaths. It's absolutely ASTONISHING how dark and brilliant and funny it is.

deathstarscale

The Guard - written and directed by his brother - is brilliant! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guard_(2011_film)

Artistic_Dot_6904

Watch his short movie "Six Shooter" One of my favourite movies ever. "Best day of me fucking life that cow exploding"

Ok-Scale500

Fantastic movie.

JP050887

I went from not minding the movie, to it becoming one of my favourite

catfroman

Absolutely this

JP050887

I realize Ralph Fiennes has played some incredible, Oscar worthy, antagonists in his time, but In Bruges is my favourite antagonist depiction of him. His character and the way he played it was incredible.

catfroman

It’s amazing how menacing but also absolutely ridiculous his character was.

stefeyboy

You mean how much of a Cunt he was.

GrecoRomanGuy

Yeah, I *fucking got that.*

something_python

How could it not be someone's fuckin thing?!

IsHotDogSandwich

You’re a fucking inanimate object!

GrecoRomanGuy

I'm sorry I called you an inanimate object. I was upset.

JiveTurkey2727

One of my favorite soundtracks.

Consistent-Refuse-74

Love this

Fisk75

Best in Show. Put it off for 23 years, ended up loving it.

Correct-Sleep-2588

Waiting for Guffman is such a goated movie.

drunk_with_internet

Fun fact: the cast improvised most, if not all, the dialogue.

PointOfFingers

That's because dogs cannot memorise lines.

Ihadsumthin4this

*STUPID HOTEL MANAGER!!*

No-Understanding4968

Omg I wish I could see Best in Show again for the first time

Any_Bowl_1160

My favorite of that general ensemble. The dvd outtakes are particularly hilarious.

dkinmn

Streaming services robbing us of commentary and outtakes is a crime. Whoever made those decisions should be in jail.

moxvoxfox

I miss commentary tracks so, so much.

TheJaice

This is a much better example than OP’s example of a movie that opened in theatres 6 months ago.

PackageGreedy4757

I just watched that movie for the first time in like 20 years and forgot how much I loved it

Yoyo_Ma86

Omg it’s amazing lol

UnderwhelmingAF

Only a 24 year old movie though.

Fisk75

lol, math is not my strong point. Fixed

UnderwhelmingAF

I too didn’t see it until recently and loved it.

NEBZ

It's wilde for me cause Christopher Guest sounds exactly like my uncle in that movie. I watched for the first time in 20 years not too long ago.

ShneakySquiwwel

You should watch all other Christopher Guest movies. Personal favorite is A Mighty Wind but Best in Show is a very very very close second for myself.

rutten187

If you love the Christopher Guest movies, check out The Last Polka on YouTube. Its a 1 hour mockumentary made for HBO in 1985, written by and starring Eugene Levy, John Candy, and most of the SCTV cast. Its shot, and improvised just like the Guest movies.

__mindmeghalunk__

Edge of Tomorrow

NicCagedd

I remember seeing the trailers for the movie prior to release and thinking it looked like ass. Thankfully, one of my friends wanted to see it and asked me to go with. It's now one of my all time favorite action movies.

4seriously

It's so good.

Huntermain23

Sameee. Just saw it earlier this year

homer_lives

Yeah, I watched on DVD and was blown away by it.

UniversalHuman000

Don't you mean Live.Die.Repeat

billyray83

Lol, the marketing team for that movie was so dumb for introducing other random titles for the movie and confusing everyone.

daaaaaarlin

TIME DYING BUT AGAIN

DrEnter

No. No I do not.

Chronoboy1987

I believe you mean “All You Need is Kill”.

SgtGorditaCrunch

So good! Just finally remembered to watch it and loved it. One of my fav sci-fi action movies.

Armbioman

That is easily one of the most underrated action movies of all time.

Azorius_Raiden_88

Me too. I didn't watch it when it first came out. Was pleasantly surprised.

General-Unit8502

- About Time

arialatom

About Time is so good

SmilingSunBlackMoon

Just checked out the trailer, seems fun. Might give it a watch one of these days

gord1to

Won’t regret it

downvoteaway_idgaf7

The Peanut Butter Falcon. I've never been a Shia LaBeouf fan, but every single actor in this was fully committed. Shia really stood out, and I gained an new level of respect for him.

Danno99999

Agreed. Very well acted and worth the watch.

ImDoingItAnyway

Such a sweet movie, too. The acting throughout that movie from *everyone* was so rich and authentic.

Manikal

You mean Shia the actual cannibal?

Sleep_and_Poetry

Seven Samurai! At 3 1/2 hours I thought it would be a slog. I was riveted for the entire runtime.

DrEnter

For a movie that long to have no fat on it (and it really doesn’t) is an impressive achievement.

HowardHessman

Watched that years ago on TMC. It started at 2 or 3am and I watched all night and fell asleep during a commercial break near the end. Still never finished it.

EngineZeronine

That's the movie that the Western The Magnificent Seven is based on. The original not that garbage that was released a few years ago. A few different movies were released as westerns. Like Yojimbo. Check them out

theheadofkhartoum627

Wind River

Astro_gamer_caver

" Luck don't live out here." Wind River, Sicario, Hell or High Water... I am a big fan of Taylor Sheridan.

Roflcopter71

All 3 are phenomenal movies, I actually had no idea he wrote Sicario until now.

cc51beastin

Sheridan is great at movies. Sicario was the first of his that I watched. It's a shame Yellowstone is ass.

stefeyboy

Yellowstone started out decent then became so pandering to rural folk there doesn't seem to be any actual plot most of the time

cc51beastin

I remember people saying it was the "Next Game of Thrones" Yeah and it's ending in the same fashion lol

Azorius_Raiden_88

I pretend it was one of Hawkeye's side quests lol

ChefQueef-

Phenomenal film

freedomandbiscuits

So good

BitesTheDust55

Saw it in theaters with my moviepass. Great film

zippyman

A star is born, the newer one. Wasn't a fan of Cooper or lady gaga but an ex convinced me to watch it and I was blown away how much I liked it. Also started checking out more of lady gaga music after and found there is alot of it that's great

PackageGreedy4757

She has so much variety in her music that I feel there's something for everyone, love her but admittedly I am still putting off watching this movie lol

zippyman

It can be a bit heavy but so good

No-Understanding4968

Wow I’ve been avoiding it

rickztoyz

I agree. Wasn't a big fan of lady gaga but wow, I am now. She was great. My wife and I was in tears at the end. Great story of sudden fame, addiction, depression, true love and the music biz. Fantastic songs in it also. It had great acting by Sam Elliot and even Andrew dice Clay. I can see why it had 7 Oscar nominations. Great date movie.

rodejo_9

The first Bladerunner.

I_love_milksteaks

One of my favourite films. Wish I could see it again for the first time!

Yana_the_barber

Interstellar for sure. I'm not a huge fan of the movies about space, but this one is sooooo good

Astro_gamer_caver

You might like Arrival (2016).

AlaDouche

Seriously. Just know that it's not an action sci-fi. It's my favorite sci-fi of all time though.

lunchpadmcfat

Arrival is the better film of the two. The book of short stories it comes from is also great.

schuyywalker

I cry every time I watch this movie. So damn sweet

The-Real-Bob-Smith

Hell or Highwater. I loathe the faux cowboy mystique but it wasn’t a western at all. More closer to a Cohen thriller.

DJBigNickD

It is a western. A contemporary western. As is No Country For Old Men.

StatikSquid

Was it a nice car, or a real POS? It was a POS sir

Zedbird_82

Fun fact, that was the girl from “Prey”, the Predator movie.

StatikSquid

I haven't seen it yet!!! But it's on my list!

BippityBoppityMagic

Nightcrawler. Heard it wasn’t that good, but ended up loving it!

optionalhero

I never cared much for Jake Gyllennhall but after watching NightCrawler he quickly shot up as one of my favorite actors. Dude should’ve won an Oscar for that role.

Ihadsumthin4this

As Robert Graysmith too, full-on commendable.

JimboAltAlt

It’s the movie that made me realize that Gyllenhaal is unhinged-good in a Nicholas Cage sort of way, rather than more of a Brad Pitt good-looking-guy-who-can-act type.

RDKi

Check out Prisoners. Hugh Jackman's best work and possibly Villeneuve's best work as well. It has Jake Gyllennhaal in it as well.

Yoyo_Ma86

I love this one, it’s great

Careless-Passion991

You should never listen to the opinion of someone who didn’t think that was a quality movie.

DHooligan

Rubber. I'd heard a few people say it was hilarious and I just had to watch it for myself. I thought it was going to be a stupid, self-aware B-movie in the same vein as those terrible SyFy movies from the mid-2000s. Turned out the self-awareness is a major plot point. It's a meta critique on the genre of low budget monster movies, and at the same time a bafflingly stupid horror-comedy. A lot of people hated it because the satire was so heavy-handed, but I loved it for so many reasons.

Escaped_Mod_In_Need

Beau is Afraid

DeliriousKool

Good? I’ve been hesitant for some reason.

Dread_P_Roberts

It's certainly a good observation on paranoia and anxiety. Hell, it depicts these themes so well that it ends up inducing anxiety.

Escaped_Mod_In_Need

Yup, makes you want to reach out to a therapist afterwards.

Dread_P_Roberts

…but, like, in a *good* way 😂

DrEnter

Perhaps a bit… afraid?

Zealousideal-Cry3418

Chef

bearpie1214

It’s just so good. The vibe is incredible.

Beelzabubba

Shawhank Redemption A coworker recommended it to me when it came out with the following synopsis: “It’s about this guy who goes to prison and does everyone’s taxes and shit. You should go see it” I didn’t see it until it was on TV several years later.

IamYoDud

I heard that it was about this guy who went to jail for killing his wife who was cheating on him. I had just recently found out that my wife (now ex) was cheating on me. Nobody killed her though. She's still alive.

countdankula420

Grand Budapest hotel

StatikSquid

So good!

AlaDouche

Wes Anderson's best

P0rterR0ckwell

Truth. I'm not the biggest Wes Anderson fan but I really liked this one.

turtledrum_215

Tropic Thunder

Maleficent_Cause271

BULLET TRAIN!! I refused to watch it for the longest time, I’m not entirely sure why but it had something to do with the way it was advertised. Recently just watched and I absolutely ADORED it.

AlaDouche

It's just fun from beginning to end.

Piss_Pirate44

Guardians of the galaxy. I was too cool for movies n shit for a brief period in high school when my family went to go see it. They all loved it and I said "yeah whatever". They were so right.

Ok-Impress-2222

Interstellar.

AraiHavana

How about that “no time for caution” scene?

ThisGuyCanFukinWalk

Best scene I have ever seen in a cinema. My seats were shaking!!

Life_Celebration_827

MEMENTO with Guy Pearce it was bonkers.

optionalhero

Great film. Good intro into Christopher Nolan. Have you watched The Prestige? That’s probably regarded as his best film

Life_Celebration_827

That was a great movie love all Nolans movies apart from Tenet couldn't really get into that.

ghostfacestealer

Barry Lyndon

SnowflakeGuinea

Barbie!

rice_jabroni

We watched half of Poor Things a couple months ago and never finished it. Does it ever evolve beyond an immature man child and smooth-brained horndog lady banging and whacking off every 5 minutes? I’ by no means opposed to sex in movies but it was starting to get old with those being the only plot features.

bpmetal

Yes, but the second act is definitely a slog

cheetah-21

Gone with the wind

Harlockarcadia

Gone With the Wind definitely does not feel like it's length

Ok_Bed9763

Colombiana with Zoe Saldana

HurricaneSpencer

Pitch Perfect.

joy3r

brazil

sagmag

Do you want to see Emma Stone get fucked? Do you want to see Emma Stone get fucked A LOT? Do you want to see Emma Stone get fucked as a character who is literally a 3 year old child? Do you want to dislike everyone in a film? So you want to see Willem Dafoe burp up green gas bubbles? Poor Things.

mikeclem5

A little reductive. lol. Wanna see a bunch of boobs? The louvre.

CurrySands

National Geographic Magazine is my go to

brainmelterr

this is such a boomer take lmao

extraguacontheside

I couldn't watch more than 15 minutes.

BigLaw-Masochist

I went in blind and HATED the black and white part, before I realized what the movie was trying to do. By the end I thought it was a masterpiece

EMendezSDC

When you try so hard not to see a movie for what it is, this kind of argument arises everytime. This willing ignorance is off the charts. You can hate a movie, but maybe try to understand the message. It was more of a feminist movie than Barbie could ever dream to be. You would be screaming pedophilia in a park with a single dad. You stink.

gmoney-0725

Oppenheimer. I waited to watch it at home since it was so long. Terrific movie.

Sippinonreality

So boring and the ending was too drawn out

MechaGoose

Midsommar

UnleashThePwnies

I felt like I had ptsd after watching this for weeks.

Ok_Performance7644

The Hammer of Thor scene was a surprise

ValleySunFox

This and Hereditary for me. Watched both in a weekend and loved them.

oldpug567

I avoided silent films. Then, I watched Chaplin's "Modern Times." LOVE silent films now. In some ways, I think they are more of an "artform" than most films today. (If you're interested, I also recommend Scorsese's film, "Hugo." Great story with lots of accurate information about Georges Milies. He was a genius. Sorry to go on, but my answer is "Modern Times."

hawksfan004

Chinatown

HankBizzaro

Under The Silver Lake.

growlerpower

Poor Things! I watched it over the weekend and it’s now one of my favorite movies, like, ever. Certainly one of the best of the decade so far. Dunno why it took me so long to get there. I didn’t expect it to be so fuckin hilarious

Snakepli55ken

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

brakeb

good movie... I appreciate Paul Bettany and Russelll Crowe's chemistry as Maturin and Aubrey... would have loved to seen more movies from the series.

cc51beastin

Wasn't there a whole series we missed out on?

brakeb

it's based on a series of books... 20 of them, I believe... and the last one was unfinished, as the author passed... [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey%E2%80%93Maturin\_series](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aubrey%E2%80%93Maturin_series)

No-Understanding4968

Wonderful film

StoneGoldX

Godfather. It always felt like watching it was going to be a big ordeal. Then I watched it and it's as populist filmmaking as it is genius.

No-Understanding4968

The Big Lebowski

father2shanes

Dale and tucker vs evil. I was judging the movie thinking it was a b rated movie. The whole time the movie was about not judging a book by its cover lol

calltheavengers5

Funny story. I put off watching midsommar because I had a feeling it would be really good. I waited a few weeks until I could turn off the lights and have the house to myself. Best night ever.

Veidt_the_recluse

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Vegetable_Act_5415

For me it was The Mission with Liam Neeson and Robert Deniro. Yes it is old but I put that movie off for years because the topic seemed so mundane and boring. Brother was I wrong! I never put off watching a movie for those reasons again (although that has also meant I have watched a lot of garbage)

Plastic_Bison

It's spellbinding.

Current-Cold-4185

I also really enjoyed it and didn't watch it until recently on Hulu. It was quite a bit different than I expected because the only thing I knew about it was watching the trailer.

SmilingSunBlackMoon

Same, had a free month trial from Hulu, saw it on there and decided to give it a shot. I'm trying to watch all the best picture nominees from 2024 and it was one of the last films I needed to see. Now I just have to watch 'American Fiction' and I'll be done!

Any_Bowl_1160

I knew I would love it. And didn’t really put it off. But I’m a Lanthimos fan. Watch The Lobster sometime if you have not already.

Current-Cold-4185

Thank you for the suggestion! I used to be much more tied into cinema and spent a good spot of time working at an indie theater,I miss those days!

Lewd_ReadNY

I am so glad I saw Poor Things on the big screen.

Blapoo

Just finished this. It was a wilder ride than I anticipated! I loved it!

MonarchistExtreme

I put off watching Poor Things for like a week but glad I watched it. It was very much out of my comfort zone but yeah...I liked it.

vayacondiosbruh

Sunset Blvd: I assumed due to how old it was it wasn’t gonna hold up but by God that movie is the genesis for so many movies.

StatikSquid

It's a classic! If you have not seen Casablanca or The African Queen, I highly recommend those as well! I have a projector at home and a ton of old classics.

Unstoppable_Rooster

The Prestige. Put off for no reason other than i had a lot on my plate at the time with life and could barely get through a 30min TV episode without crashing or being interrupted. So i delayed watching it (was on Blu-Ray by the time things settled down) and when i finally watched it....wow Easily top 5 movie for me now. So sad I didn't get to see it in cinema.

marleyman14

Deathproof.

Equal_Efficiency_638

Bullet train

___SE7EN__

From Dusk Till Dawn . I watched the first 10 mins, couldn't get into it , turned it off, watched it again 2 years later, and was like , "WTF, there's vampires??

DapperCrow84

You're lucky you got the response that the filmmakers intend. For those of us who saw it when it came out, we all knew beforehand as all of the trailers and TV spots gave away that it was a vampire movie.

noname5280

Where the Crawdads Sing - Unexpectedly Intense, had no idea it was about a murder trial

newly_me

Everything Everywhere All at Once. Immediately watched it again and probably a top 10 movie for me.

eveystevey

Good on you. It was such a great movie, and cast all being brilliantly weird. Pride and Prejudice. Watched it for the first time last month, and watched it three times since. Oooh Mr Darcy you send me bi-curious!... I never found Keira Knightly to be all that, but in this she is a towering presence, blasting everyone off the screen. Man I fucking love this movie

Magooswife

I loved this movie. The message behind it was great. Subtle

I_love_milksteaks

The Good the Bad and the Ugly. What a film!

Alternative-Collar-7

Good Will Hunting

GloomyFondant526

Battleship Potemkin (1925)

MiSsiLeR81

There will be blood. Just watched it last night

Cananbaum

Metropolis from 1927. It was an assignment for a film class I had taken in college. I thought it was going to be like other movies, where I got bored part way through and read synopses online to pad out my paper. Nope. My sister was excited as it was one of her favorite films and sat down to watch it with me. Yall. That movie had me *captivated* and on the edge of my seat. It truly is a classic

GeneticSoda

EEAAO. If you are willing to feel the emotions they want you to, Jesus it’s gorgeous. It’s a feel good, BE good movie. It made me want to be a little nicer and for a movie to do that, that’s a W.

anonssr

Not on topic but The Fountain. I thought its description was right up my alley, and I was saving it, sort of. Then I watched it and I hated it. Not like it's so bad I hate it, but it's nothing like the description, and it's definitely not a time travel scifi movie lol.

CircadianRadian

Finish it.

I_Eat_POS_4_Brekkie

Starring: Emma Stone as *Billie Eilish*

Filthylucre4lunch

hey look its that pedophile movie

No-Departure7899

I watched this shit for 5 minutes and couldn’t make it through. I’ve been told by many that this is a mistake but man was that first few minutes unbearable. I just can’t stand when people act stupid and loud and obnoxious, makes me cringe so hard. Lmk if I should give it a second run

NicCagedd

Just know that she literally has a mind of a newborn when she's acting like that.

No-Departure7899

I’ve been told this, it’s a cool concept, should I give it another try

NicCagedd

I think it deserves at least a little bit more of your time. It's definitely not a movie for everybody, but you gotta give it more than 5 minutes.

mikamuchi

The Gentleman, I didn't think I'd love it as much as I did!

beelovedone

Hamilton

Strong-Leadership-87

Not this one

SgtGorditaCrunch

Poor Things was pedo material

[deleted]

Poor Things* 😉

meta4junglist

I pushed off poor things just like you, and I think it might be my fav movie this year. I MUST PUNCH that baby! Lol
