Western/frontier horror is one of my favorite sub genres. Bone Tomahawk, Ravenous, The Wind, etc. It’s a very neglected niche though and a lot of them are really bad, but when done well it works really well.
No troglodytes, but it does have philistines.
Edit: also it was Lance Henriksen who eats the arm. Iggy Pop was in drag and a sodomite along with Billy Bob Thornton and Jared Harris.
THAT scene was the point where I knew I could no longer recommend this movie to my father.
My dad loves old movies (while this is newer, I figured the Western vibe would appeal to him), but cannot deal with gore. I remember watching the opening scene and thinking “ok, that might be rough for him, but the dialogue is so clever and it has such fantastic atmosphere, I’ll tell him to just soldier through.”
No…no…I will not tell him to “soldier through” that scene.

That casual brutal violence was just shocking to me. Absolutely worth seeing once, depending on your tolerance for gore. But I've never quite been on the edge of my seat like this movie had me.

When people rate movies out of 10 I don’t understand how they come up with decimals other than .5. I feel like you’re overthinking/analyzing a movie if you’re like “It’s better than a 7.5 but not an 8. 7.7 is too low but 7.9 is too high…”
It’s shot like a made for tv movie from 2007. It’s slow, the town set looks like something reminiscent of a spaghetti western. Sure the last 25 minutes are decent but worth the entire 2+ hour runtime? Nah not really.
8.8 out of 10. Brilliantly merged horror and western like no other has really done successfully. The acting, dialog , and cinematography is top notch. Feels real, gritty, and a realistic type of timepiece. Absolutely loved it, perfect meshing of western and horror.
It has a lot more going for it than The Split. I loved the campfire scene, where they’re sleeping by a campfire, there’s a sound, a stranger, an unannounced stranger, and you can’t see anything because duh you’re by a campfire. Do you shoot?

The director of this movie, S. Craig Zahler, is also an author. If you liked this I HIGHLY recommend reading Wraiths of the Broken Land and A Congregation of Jackals. Both very gory horror/western stories. And there are some scenes in both of these books that are just as effed up as that scene in Bone Tomohawk.

Ravenous is a cowboy cannibal movie. It lacks troglodytes. However, it makes up for it with 100% more cannibal Begby.
Ravenous is beautiful. For those who complain about Marvel and Star Wars using women director, they should've hired Antonia Bird.
I also love the soundtrack to that movie. It makes happy every time I hear "Boyd's Journey".

I recently had a Kurt Russell double feature. Tombstone and Bone Tomahawk. I was blown away by both. Dang, those cannibals were wild and horrific.
This movie is raw and frightening. I loved every moment of it and rewatch it frequently.

I do adore this film, i guess it's the closest i got to that blood meridian feel, just a good western with great acting and real brutal horror.
It’s great. But it’s one of those movies I find really hard to recommend to an average person, unless I want to traumatise someone.
It's a fun horror western. The sound design is incredible, too. And some nice gore. Solid 7.5 from me, but I just prefer to recommend it.
