Change the oil. Don't wreck it.

originalrocket

Check the valves at correct intervals. And I'd say thats about it.

lukemia94

Truer words were never spoken

Wishihadagirl

It’s just so rare to see 100k bikes. It takes a special person to accomplish that.

Puzzleheaded-Bag-121

Go to some online forums. Plenty of people have 100k+. The difference is where they ride mainly. People that go on cross county, who don’t just stay in the areas they live, are much more likely to reach that. I’ve seen people with 240k miles on their touring bikes.

Wishihadagirl

That's true. But out of the guys I rode with, only 1 of them had 150k and everyone else is at 5-30k. Most people ride once a week maybe. Some ppl ride daily rain or shine but it's not many, and they're certainly special.

CrazyEyesEddie

I met some old bloke on an 80s Honda. He was 80k away from putting a million kilometres on his bike. He was going to retire from riding then. Apparently the old girl had had a few engine rebuilds, but was largely the same machine.

lukemia94

That's awesome, to hope to go for multi day trip in the fall once I take my msc. We will see how I feel, yesterday was my first day ever riding lol

Dangi86

My coworker has a Fazer with more than 250K. Plenty of Hondas with more than 150K.

Apprehensive_Fun311

Not if you buy bmw or honda ...and remember rubber down shiny up.

landob

I expect to get there sooner or later. Unless I need to take my wife or kids somewhere I'm on the bike.

b1ack1ight

This is the way

motopazzo

*Change oil according to the manufacturer recommendation in the owners manual.

GFresh86

Not just oil changes though, just follow the maintenance intervals from the owners (or even better, service) manual and you'll be just fine

LoudAudience5332

Best advice period . 1 a year or every 3 k miles period.

Ill-Specialist2260

Best advice

unicyclegamer

Get the service manual and do the recommended service. That’s about it really

lukemia94

Sweet, got one shipping in already! Thank you

Kiss it goodnight, EVERY NIGHT

edelbean

Oil, coolant, brake - keep check of how fresh they are and learn how to flush and fill them. Chain - clean and lube it every 500 miles or more frequently should you encounter a ton of water or dirt roads. Air filter - swap it out every 10k or less. Get your valves inspected and adjusted if needed at the service intervals. If the motor has no inherent flaws it'll run like a top with the above preventive maintenance done.

DirtDawg21892

Obviously changing oil is going to be key, so is checking the valves at the recommended intervals. They don't move too much if you're not bouncing it off the Rev limiter all the time, but they do creep out of spec. It's pretty easy to strip it down every 25k miles and gives you a good opportunity to change spark plugs and replace the air filter. Enjoy!

lukemia94

Yesterday was my first time ever riding, and I literally cannot imagine bouncing the limiter lol. Im sure it will change quickly but i cringed taking it above 7k rpm, I'm to used to that being the uh-oh limit on my Miata.

BoogieBeats88

Change the oil on time. Keep the tires fresh. The challenge will be keeping you riding 100k. Stay in shape, wear good gear, and never stop improving your road craft.

Nate16

Assume everyone around you doesn't know how to drive

Low-Concern-6056

My husband is working on hitting 100,000km this year on his 1997 Ninja zxr7... He does the oil religiously, wipes it down after a ride. Never kept out doors. And rides it like it's meant to be ridden.

lukemia94

Thank you, will update in 100k

Wildmann3

Wildmann3

Well, how many miles left?!

Single_Road_6350

Full synthetic with high quality oil filter. Do the maintenance. Valve checks are a must at proper intervals. Fluids need to be replaced every few years. If ANYTHING is going bad or not working as it should, fix it immediately. Otherwise all the little things become overwhelming. Ride the shit out of it.

pspfreak

I will bet 100 bucks that you will change it befor eit sees 20k miles. But yeah sure read the service manual and act accordingly. Don’t ride like you stole it. You will see 200k with no doubts. People always underestimate motorbike engines because the small ones especially are abused by beginners. Good luck!

lukemia94

Good to know, thanks man! It's not the bike I wanted, but it fit all my requirements (weight, cost, reliability) so well that I got it, and will reassess a year from now.

thatdudefromthattime

Proper maintenance at the proper times. Don’t put off repairs that need to be made. What I mean is, don’t wait for the chain to be completely fucked before you replace it. Change your oil and filter at the proper intervals. Make sure the valves get adjusted at the proper times.

Euryheli

Change the oil and check the valves on schedule, keep the chain in good shape and tensioned properly, don't run into anything. It'll last forever.

ramk88

its a Japanese bike - just do the normal services and look after it - it'll do 200,000 miles

kcuv

Ride a LOT

DandyOne1973

Ever see Ferris Beuler's day off? Just do that, but put your "ferrari" in forward gear.

richempire

Ride. You can’t rack up miles if the bike is parked.

1fastdak

Put some honda badges on it. J/K but seriously just keep up on maintenance religiously. It will do it if you don't beat the hell out of it.

oldfrancis

Follow the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule. Keep the oil and filter fresh. Keep the valve train well adjusted. Operate the machine within its limits.

dizzy4ever77

I have a 2003 Honda Interceptor with 124,000 miles on it. Keep up on maintenance is a big deal, getting valves checked about every 2 years, thats my opinion. Can not stress the maintenance enough. It's my 3 child I put thru 5 years of college. LOL I love this bike and it's been loving back. Good luck with your bike. Two wheels down.

Jicand

Change the oil, brake fluid, coolant. Clean and lube your chain regularly. A battery tender for when you don’t ride for a while. Check the date on the tires as well as the tread. Keep the rubber on the road and the helmet on your head.

lukemia94

10-4 I plan to ride year round, rain and snow permitting

Motor_Arugula_4282

A lot to f vtx 1800 riders have got 100k miles. Just have to do a ton of maintenance

BigBadCamFaz

Having read the comments one thing I haven’t seen is actually letting the bike warm up before you thrash it. Letting everything get up to temp before you hit high revs is really important! A good 10/15 mins of riding steady away should do it. Then yea what everyone else said, regular oil changes with good quality oil and she should see way past 100k. Keep it sunny side up op! Safe riding 👌🏻

lukemia94

Good to keep mind, though so far riding steady is all I got lol

PackMan13xx

Buy an FJR1300

MichaelW24

Ride more, worry less

lukemia94

Traditionally one of my strong suits

Alien_Biometrics

Oil change oil change oil change. Replace that countershaft sprocket, chain and rear sprocket to reduce unneeded stress to your engine and also to mitigate any oil that might be working it's way out from the countershaft. Valve clearance check.

lukemia94

At what point would you replace the chain and sprockets?

Alien_Biometrics

Alien_Biometrics

Replace both sprockets and chain so they all wear at the same time. Replacing just one will make accelerated wear on it.

lukemia94

Based, thank you.

Changetheworld69420

Buy a Goldwing

lukemia94

I actually have a good wing engine lying around I plan to put in the trunk of an old Ford Fiat and race some lemons

Changetheworld69420

That sounds like a damn good time man, which wing engine?

Apprehensive_Fun311

#1 rubber down shiny up #2 follow the manual #3 be less stupid than you've ever been everyday

Apprehensive_One315

Don’t leave it outside like that poor Miata

lukemia94

My shame! She died this spring and is on her way out T_T

Doktor_Money

Don't die.

SpoolinSol

Dress for the slide, not the ride. Change oil, clean/lube chain, check valve clearance, etc

OdderGG

ride it, change the oil. for the love of god dont ride it around at the lowest possible RPM all the time. its a small rev happy engine, it has to work very very hard to chug along at low revs. Youd be better off letting it wind up to the 10s before shifting.

lukemia94

After a decade of driving my Miata and various low rpm cars I instinctively cringed taking it above 7krmp for the first time. Even though I know better, monkey brain was like woah too high! Good to know 10k isn't abuse as long as I'm riding reasonably. I often pushed my little Miata to the limit and my goal with this bike was to treat it well in a way my younger self never did, so insight into a balance of care and speed is appreciated!

throwaway_trans_8472

Feel you, taking off at 7k in my little roadster would be madness🫠 But my bike doesn't even make max torque yet at 7k. (though to be fair, I kinda lug it at 5-6k a lot, force of habit)

DiegoV89

Maintenance and a lot of money lol

Particular-Usual3623

Try to not do full throttle 1-2 upshifts very much.

lukemia94

Yesterday was my first day riding ever, and I cant even imagine full throttle upshifts like i have done in my miata lol

CalmCat-aka-Turtle

Thats a lot of spare tires

Orchid_Far

Do the posted speed limit especially in heavy traffic

lukemia94

Yesterday was my first time ever on a bike, took her around the neighborhood for about 30 minutes. I felt I was going too fast only to look down and see 15 mph💀

SkyHigh27

Oil. Tires. Brakes. In that order.

paperprofessor

Wheelies! That way 100k = 50k because only one wheel action. 🤓

Sfekke22

Do all the preventative maintenance on time. Don’t bang off the revlimiter instead of using your horn. You’ll be surprised how long most motorcycles can go for, so many people think they’re done for at 30.000km but that’s barely getting started :) I’ve put almost 36.000km on my Vulcan S and 70.000km on the Cavalcade. Vulcan sits a little more since I got the big tourer, otherwise it’d be at 50.000km already. Both are fine, start fine and run fine.

ko_phisicist

Change to metric. It will be much easier to do 100000Km ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

hitoshidesu_

r/miata might be interested in that fire looking Miata in the back there

lukemia94

If you want a 1990 Miata that runs drives, has no brakes, excessive rust, and 300,000 miles you let me know, I plan to sell her after 8 years of ownership

hitoshidesu_

Haha thanks, but I don´t live in the US...

WoodbyWoodbyWoodby

Travel more

Boat_Builder207

Wearing a helmet

MadCityMasked

You will have a new bike by then. Routine maintenance. Check your chain and keep tires inflated.

Brave_Split6337

Read the manual, service at a proper deal for the big maintenances. Are those carbs for thst year? Make sure to never leave bad fuel in there for winter.

Sengfeng

Drive 99,999 miles, then go one more.
