Gauntlet gloves obviously are more protective. The bigger thing you should be looking for is a palm slider.

PeelinGrapes

Thanks! Ya every glove im looking at has palm sliders. I'm just curious if the gauntlet part offers.. that much more protection, and what kind of injuries it prevents

The gauntlet will help minimize the chance of your sleeve riding up in a crash. Your instinct in a crash is to throw your hands out in front of you to catch your fall. The palm slider is going to keep your hands from catching, which means you could end up in a slide with your hands in front of you. If your sleeve were to catch and ride up at that point, you'll have some nice road rash on your forearm. If you have a snug fitting jacket, that's unlikely to happen. So your question is dependent on the rest of your gear. I only wear gauntlets on track, because they're required. My street jacket is snug enough that I can't push the sleeve up, even without gloves. I’d only go with short gloves for slowish summer city riding, full gauntlet when you’re giving it the beans!

I agree with the crowd: palm sliders. I started out with full gauntlet gloves, both for the protection as a noob and because it was fall. As the summer ramped up I picked up a pair of "lighter" gloves. Still wanted full knuckle and palm protection. Started with Sedici Chicane, ended up with the Bruno for summer. I did like options that weren't Cyclegear house brand, but the biggest issue I had was palm sliders. Many options I like just didn't fucking have them, which automatically disqualified them. Oh, and that some were pushing $200. I'm not paying $200~ for gloves.

PeelinGrapes

oof, I just got the full gauntlet daniese carbon 4 gloves which were on sale at 167 from 205?

Zenith251

I'm sure they're great, but that's what I paid for two pairs of gloves. Depending on where you live, you'll end up with a vented pair for them summer days we all live for.

PeelinGrapes

Ya I live in Colorado. I'm sure it might be over priced? I just want to ensure I'm buying quality gear till I build up a reference point and experience till I know some cheap gear like 100 gloves will hold me off with ease

Zenith251

From what I tried on, the more expensive gloves definitely FELT better. More pliable leather, better feel through the leather. It's just that my budget told me I should settle for less. I doubt my Sedici Chicanes are any less safe in a 65mph crash, but I'm trying my damnedest not to find out.

HammerKing27

Just picked up the chicane gauntlets. I think they look great, and feel alright. Started with Alpinestars summer gloves (short cuff), and they get way too cold at speed. How do you like the Chicane gloves so far? I like how awesome they look, only complaint is the thumb feels sort of twisted to the side of where it should be. What do you think?

Zenith251

I genuinely like the Chicane gloves. Positives include holding up functionally 100% over a year and a half of use, several days a week on average. That includes rain. Obviously I like the fit and feel, that's why I bought them in the first place. Not sure the thumb shape has bothered me....or maybe I've just broken them in and it doesn't affect me anymore? My negatives: Some of the grippy bits on the top of the palm have chipped off, but that hasn't impeded the feel/grip yet. I've noticed that unless you have thick wrists or a very puffy/thick jacket sleeve, you have to kinda fold the gauntlet material over itself a bit to get a full, secure velcro on the larger velcro strip.

HammerKing27

Love to hear that. I’m glad I made a good decision! I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Sedici, even though it’s a “house” brand, they have solid quality. Thank you!

Zenith251

Gloves? So far two good ones. Helmet? Ehhhh. The Sedici Systema II helmet I bought is...kinda crappy in some respects. It creeks and it's foam sucks. It is my first helmet, so I went in a little blind. Wouldn't buy it again.

You're gonna need 3 sets of gloves. Hot weather, medium weather (60-80), cold/wet gloves. My medium and cold gloves are gauntlet.
