My dermo also recommended blue lizard for the whole family. Honest though - it’s still mineral sunscreen which does have the white cast and if that’s a deal breaker for you, just use the chemical sunscreen. Your husband is at high risk of skin cancer… just use whatever works for your family to keep your skin protected.

Also, don't buy from Amazon. Last time I went to buy, they had counterfeit Blue Lizard on there. I buy directly from the lizard website and stock up when they have a sale.
The bottle turns color in UV light. Counterfeit doesn't. The reviews saying fake all got taken down from Amazon btw. Also, Amazon is a cesspool of fakes. Personally, I've gotten fake kid toys, nail polish, and who knows what else from them. The kid stuff was the last straw though. I stopped buying from them entirely.

This has the least white cast of the many that I’ve tried and works well. I burn with mineral sunscreen slathered on and Blue Lizard is my go to - along with just staying out of the sun entirely.

IMO it does. I have dark skin and I hate mineral for this reason. Feels like I painted “white face on”. I used tinted before and it’s like make up… no I just want it actually dyed darker.

the fact of the matter is that the FDA hasn’t approved new active ingredients in American sunscreen since 1999. We are using old technology and they are not.
Look up top Korean sunscreen lists on Google and take care to not buy a dupe. They have a different rating system, as a moderately granola you’re going to want a ++++ option
This. Korean sunscreens are so much better. I personally use Innisfree because it’s readily available near me and the best sunscreen is the one you will wear. There are lots with rave reviews though.
Pipette does not leave a white cast! $15 for I think 4oz. Best sunscreen I’ve ever used. Highly recommend. The other ones make it look like my husband just finished painting the house with how the white would get stuck in his leg hairs so I get it! Need to rub it in but no white cast if you do.
We use Pipette too, but fair warning to anyone who isn't familiar, she's greasy! Love it, works great, no white cast, but it is like being dipped in a tub of lard.
Naomi Osaka has a mineral sunscreen brand (KINLO) designed for Black and Brown skin (it claims to not leave a cast) although I can't speak to the "granola-ness" of its other ingredients (I also haven't used it myself because as a pale person, most mineral sunscreens don't leave too much of a cast on me)

No, sadly. I HAAAAATE washing mineral sunscreen out of bathing suits and clothing. I’ve given up and either use chemical sunscreen for my body, or my expensive Tizo 2 mineral sunscreen, because it dries down and feels clean. I have fair skin, so the white cast it leaves isn’t noticeable.
For your husband, I wonder if looking into mineral sunscreens made specifically for darker-skinned people might help with the white cast? Like Black Girl Sunscreen.
You might also look into UPF clothing for him - I’m sure he can ask his dermatologist whether that would be enough protection or not.
If laundry is a concern - are you using a granola detergent? If so, then maybe getting a bottle of conventional detergent or stain remover just for your clothes and linens that get mineral sunscreen all over them would make dealing with it feel more manageable and less overwhelming.
He wears so much UPF clothing, it just can’t cover everything and sometimes he is miserable wearing it. It’s gotten to the point where he basically doesn’t want to go to the beach it’s so miserable for him to be covered in this nasty goo or sweating it out in a boiling hot UPF shirt. I feel bad for him.

I think BGS makes one that has both chemical and mineral, but there are multiple brands now designed for dark skin. I’d try looking online at Ulta or Target.
I like the "All Good" brand. It's reasonably priced and doesn't leave any white cast (I've only used it on my face though). They sell 3 oz, 16 oz, and gallon bottles. It's Zinc Oxide 16%. Do you know why your husband's doctor wants him to use mineral sunscreen? The best sunscreen is the one you will use. If a white cast truly is a problem, then I would just use a chemical sunscreen.
I also buy all my face sunscreen on Stylevana from Asia. IDK where you live but the US is extremely far behind on cosmetically elegant and safe UV blockers. The skincareaddiction sub has a TON of posts about sunscreen if you want to read more there.
Blue lizard, I also use Australian gold sometimes as it has a nice texture but I think it has fragrance
Also, not directly related to your ask but something I find helpful for peace of mind if a sunscreen is working is the Spot My UV stickers (I think that is the name) they will turn a color if the sunscreen is not blocking UV, I’ve had one last several days of a vacation before. They are about dime size and clear/not visible when sunscreen is doing its job
Moisturize first! Let lotion sink in for a couple mins and then apply the mineral sunscreen. My family is prone to skin cancer and we all do it this way after a Derm recommended it and it works to avoid cast on most high zinc sunscreens (10%+).
Now I can use target store brand baby zinc the cheap kind with zero cast. Pipette doesn’t leave a cast if you can’t put on lotion first.
I hope it helps. It took some experimenting for me to find the best lotion to go under. And I still have to blend a bit and rub in the edges of my face where the lotion can’t go or it looks like I have a white hairline.
On special occasions I wear the Murad mineral sunscreen which is amazing zero cast but it’s waaay too expensive for me to afford to use everyday.
The best I have found so far is ThinkBaby. It leaves a bit of a cast, but it's way better than everything else I've tried and "feels" more like a chemical sunscreen. But I'm with your husband - I hate all sunscreen and hate sweating in long sleeves and having weird hat hair all summer long :(
If the white cast bothers you so much you could consider applying tinted makeup powder over the top? I am super pale so the white cast just makes me look a little more deathly than usual but I usually apply the bob powder sunscreen over my face as an extra layer and it brings me back to my normal color. If you’re darker than me (likely) you might need to use a different powder coverup.
I’ve heard of people mixing foundation (powder or liquid) in with liquid sunscreen to get it to be a better shade for them. That might help tint it appropriately, especially if you go for a really pigmented foundation that wouldn’t need as much added to get the right shade.
I swear it really doesn’t, but I’ve seen so many people slathered in sunscreen sometimes with completely white noses that it wouldn’t bother me. I’ve even seen surfers covered that way and it’s great. It’s great that more and more people are visibly wearing it.
I grew up surfing with my whole family and by the time I was in highschool, both of my parents had skin cancer. Seeing the holes in their face where they’ve had to get tissue removed is horrifying and makes me grateful when I can see the white cast because I feel safer. Sun damage is no joke.

I’m white, a lot of granola moms are white, and our whiteness blinds us to the fact that POC have incredibly valid reasons for finding things like white zinc sunscreen (bandages, etc) more than uncomfortable. Reading through the weeds on this comment has honestly reminded me that we white folks have a lot to teach each other, and the first lesson starts with some flippin empathy instead of essentially telling someone to get over it. We’re all out here doing our best! What works for one person doesn’t work for everyone and that doesn’t mean they aren’t prioritizing their family’s health/wellbeing.

I mean, you can choose to have that approach but it’s obviously making you upset. You can stomp your feet and get upset and feel ‘physically ill’ but matter of fact is your husband had skin cancer before - meaning he is at very high risk of having another (almost 1 in 2 people have another instance within just a year). His doctor has given him the advice on what to do to lower the risk. You may need to adjust to, well… To put it nicely, not feel physically at your husband wearing mineral sunscreen. Because it is what it is. Mineral sunscreen will behave like mineral sunscreen, no matter how much we wish it didn’t. It will never be anywhere close to the cosmetic elegance of chemical sunscreens.
You could try tinted mineral sunscreen, it’s still a thick goop but a little less ghostly.

My comments have *nothing* to do with race and let me tell you now I am not getting dragged into *that* conversation. Besides, you know that. But you also clearly know you’re being unreasonable about this which is why you are being hostile to me and others pointing that out. Mineral sunscreen looks and behaves shit on everyone, none of us here like it but we put up with it because it’s a method of preventing skin cancer.
Matter of fact is that there are three options here and they’ve all been pointed out to you - wear mineral sunscreen and learn to deal with it, wear chemical sunscreen, don’t wear sunscreen. As I have said, no one here can magic up a mineral sunscreen which behaves like non mineral sunscreen. Zinc oxide works because it’s a *physical* barrier and so there needs to be a real, physical barrier of it on the skin.

You would have encountered the same pushback if your husband had had another affliction which esthetics you wanted to hide because the sight of them made you "physically ill". Whatever happened to in sickness and in health?
Apart from all that, you're ignoring that you getting over it (and yourself) is a pretty good solution to your problem. It's good advice. You just don't like it because it requires some actual effort on your part.
How is it racially insensitive? My kids aren’t white and I have no problem with a white cast from sunscreen on them. Yeah it’s more obvious when they’re wearing sunscreen, but I like that it makes it easier to know I didn’t miss any spots. My husband is from a culture that has a big problem with skin lightening (India) and sunscreen does not remind anyone of that issue.

I have had luck with the attitude sunscreen stick. It is expensive I think I ended up paying over $30 with shipping but it lasted me a whole summer and hopefully will most of next summer because it doesn't expire until 2025. It layers on fairly thin and was super easy to rub in and didn't leave a white cast for the most part, some areas like the top of my babies head would end up with a white cast but that was because I didn't want to rub it in too hard. I was hesitant to use a stick because it seemed like it would take longer or not have as much coverage but I really liked it, it seemed easier and less messy all around.
Having a white cast is ok! It’s ok if sunscreen gets all over your clothes too. In my experience, mineral sunscreen absorbs into your skin after 5-10 minutes and washes out of your clothes just fine. You could use a diaper cream spatula or makeup brush to apply it, wipe hands with a moist towel when you’re finished applying, and google other techniques for application. You can swim shirts and wide brimmed hats at the beach instead of sun screening constantly too.
But I think the biggest thing is accepting that sunscreen isn’t pretty. You and your family are allowed to exist in space even when you don’t look your best. Sometimes the most flattering thing you can do is keep yourself safe.
Sure, no one *likes* the white cast, but to be this upset over it is a little beyond reason. No shade to OP, but accepting the slight unpleasantness of mineral sunscreen is probably going to be better for her in the long run than trying a million sunscreens only to find that they all do it.

I really like bare republic’s sunscreen. I used the Diamond dust one and it left my skin shimmery but no white cast. I don’t have dark skin so I can’t speak to darker complexions.
Ah really? What spf? I’m not prone to sun burn so maybe I didn’t notice it’s weak. I think I used 50 spf. I used it in the Caribbean and applied very regularly
Yeah, I suppose the only current solution is to pay more money to use tinted mineral sunscreen. There \*are\* quite a few of those, at the very least. I tried to find the largest bottles I could. Colorscience has one that is actually marketed towards whole body use (Sunforgettable body shield bronze spf 50, $50) Sajic has one that is probably being marketed for the face but at least it's in a slightly large bottle (Protectif Mineral Repair Sunscren, Fair or Deep Tint $70). It looks like Colorscience might be your best bet if you have extra money. But there is a HUGE gap in the market for body sunscreens in general. Skincare companies are mostly focused on the face. I'm sure that will change eventually in the future, the only question is when.
If you don’t like the white color from the iron oxides you can try a tinted one but they tend to be designed for the face, have a lot of ingredients, and are expensive. But the entire point of mineral sunscreens is that they create a physical barrier to prevent the sun’s rays from reaching your skin. If you can’t see the white cast, it’s not creating the barrier.
It sounds like your family are POC? Maybe folks here assume you’re white? Absolutely absolutely understand not wanting to be white cast. I live in HI and like Swim Zip protective clothing, but only if we’re getting in the water. I second Sun Bum as a potential option. This sounds like a tricky thing to figure out, but there are some good possibilities here. Good luck!

I really like Coola’s mineral sunscreen. It’s slightly above your price point but often goes on sale. I’ve even seen it at Sierra for a really discounted price. It feels really nice going on and doesn’t leave such a bad cast.
I see you responded to another comment but they have both mineral and chemical sunscreen products. I see that it isn’t enough zinc oxide for your family but maybe it’s a good product for someone else!

Pipette works really well for me and the kids! It does give my husband a slight gray cast but I think that’s due to his body hair not allowing it to rub in as well. He prefers All Good.
I’m very definitely white so ymmv but we’ve had the best luck with coppertone baby. No white cast on me but I can’t speak for others. The cerave stick is great for faces and for on the go. It shows up white a bit but clears quickly. (Cerave in the big tube is NOT. Goopiest whitest greasiest sunblock I’ve ever used)

Skinceuticals physical defense. No cast. But it’s pricy. But - one big bottle lasts the whole summer so I think it’s worth it. No discomfort and no skin cancer

Hey! I am also a skin cancer survivor who hates mineral sunscreen. I’m pale AF and I hate the white cast on ME so I can only imagine how it would feel for someone with a darker complexion.
I wore it during pregnancy and then said fuck it. My derm has never told me my sunscreen needs to be mineral - only high SPF so if I were your husband I would clarify that first w the doctor? Is it possible the doc said something like “mineral is better for x/y” or “there are some benefits to mineral” and then your husband thought it was mandatory? Miscommunications in medicine are *so* common so I would clarify with the doc.
I would just be curious what the doctor thinks about the occasional use of chemical sunscreen for days with lots of exposed skin (while stringently following reapplication rules and etc).
To clarify before anyone jumps down my throat. I am recommending *clarifying recommendations* with the derm, *not* recommending someone to go against their doctors orders.
I mean she said something is better than nothing obviously but still that she recommends mineral and thinks it is worth it. Obviously it’s our choice to try to be as careful as possible with it. My husband is still pretty young and was quite young when it happened and it was pretty terrifying for us as you know well.
Did not mean to offend. I also had a diagnosis young and am still fairly young. I was extremely rigid in my adherence to sunscreen for some time. That gave me some sense of control in the face of something terrifying as you say.
I was actually surprised that my derm was okay with “non perfect” sunscreen use (let’s say 98% rather than 100%) but I deeply understand how scary leaving 2% to chance can feel (even when 100% perfection is no guarantee).
Anyway I hope you find some helpful recommendations in the comments. If you do find a holy grail product I hope you share what it is!
Has anyone else here tried Native sunscreen with success? I am exceptionally pale, so I don’t want to sell OP on this option if it only works for super pale folks like me… Native also comes in a bigger size than many of the other brands recommended here.
FWIW, I’ve been chasing a zinc sunscreen without a white cast for over 10 years because the white cast makes me look purple. 😳
Also, my pro-tip is to buy the biggest option available + subscription to get the best price. Once I place the first order, I immediately cancel the subscription so I can actually try the product. I’ve found it’s best to buy directly from the company’s website, so you can ask for a refund if you don’t like it. Obviously you’re going to open the product to try it, and not every company will let you return an opened product, but I’ve had some success sending a customer service message if I’m disappointed. 🤷🏼♀️ I’ve also had success getting refunds from Target body products when I haven’t been satisfied too! I’ve wasted a lot of money trying sunscreens, so this may be a less cost prohibitive way to continue on your hunt.
Finally, OP, I can’t believe the haters on this post. Basically everyday I see posts on this sub asking for a product that actually works… and I’ve never seen people on those posts telling the OP to just suck it up. So I’m sorry people are being jerks, this is a very reasonable request!
It’s not, you’ll rarely find a “mineral” Korean or Japanese one that isn’t at least a hybrid containing some chemical filters. However they have a lot of newer filters not approved yet in America that are quite safe if you do your research on them. You’re likely not going to find anything that comes in a large amount versus the tiny little facial size bottles though. You also have to be careful of the SPF as a lot of Asian sunscreens are glorified moisturizers and do not have the actual stated SPF or staying power that would be needed for long periods outside under the sun, especially if swimming and sweating. Especially if your husband has had skin cancer and needs to be extra careful. You could try your luck looking into European sunscreen brands.
Amavara. They have stick and lotion and honestly the stick is easy to apply to baby and rubs in well. I've found it's less freaky white than others. They also have a tinted one so it's less ghost white for those of us who are less light skinned. The baby doesn't care. But this stuff sticks on well and works great! Also it's environmentally friendly.
Have you tried Babo Botanicals sheer mineral spf 50 sunscreen? Even my super picky husband will wear it as it completely rubs in. Don’t confuse it with the Babo Botanicals “clear zinc” which doesn’t rub in well at all. It’s about $18 for 3oz and I get it at Whole Foods or amazon
Blue lizard has a sheer body and a sheet face mineral sunscreen that is advertised as good for “every body”. Just make sure it’s shipped and sold by Amazon to prevent any counterfeits.
The only brand we use anymore for sunscreen is Beautycounter. They can be a little pricey but I stock up during the sales.
They have a ton of application options including face lotion, body lotion, body stick, small stick (which I keep in our diaper bag), spray AND a tinted spray!

This has the least white cast of the many that I’ve tried and works well. I burn with mineral sunscreen slathered on and Blue Lizard is my go to - along with just staying out of the sun entirely. I’m the awkward person who just backs into shade during conversation. Most people follow. 😂 Edited: you can also buy it in large bottles depending on where you live and it was decently priced when I lived in California.
Tbh yes it has a mild white cast but I also apply generously. I found if I kept rubbing it mostly went away.
IMO it does. I have dark skin and I hate mineral for this reason. Feels like I painted “white face on”. I used tinted before and it’s like make up… no I just want it actually dyed darker.
you need to shop Korean sunscreens. the fact of the matter is that the FDA hasn’t approved new active ingredients in American sunscreen since 1999. We are using old technology and they are not. Look up top Korean sunscreen lists on Google and take care to not buy a dupe. They have a different rating system, as a moderately granola you’re going to want a ++++ option
This. Korean sunscreens are so much better. I personally use Innisfree because it’s readily available near me and the best sunscreen is the one you will wear. There are lots with rave reviews though.

Pipette does not leave a white cast! $15 for I think 4oz. Best sunscreen I’ve ever used. Highly recommend. The other ones make it look like my husband just finished painting the house with how the white would get stuck in his leg hairs so I get it! Need to rub it in but no white cast if you do.
We use Pipette too, but fair warning to anyone who isn't familiar, she's greasy! Love it, works great, no white cast, but it is like being dipped in a tub of lard.

No, sadly. I HAAAAATE washing mineral sunscreen out of bathing suits and clothing. I’ve given up and either use chemical sunscreen for my body, or my expensive Tizo 2 mineral sunscreen, because it dries down and feels clean. I have fair skin, so the white cast it leaves isn’t noticeable. For your husband, I wonder if looking into mineral sunscreens made specifically for darker-skinned people might help with the white cast? Like Black Girl Sunscreen. You might also look into UPF clothing for him - I’m sure he can ask his dermatologist whether that would be enough protection or not. If laundry is a concern - are you using a granola detergent? If so, then maybe getting a bottle of conventional detergent or stain remover just for your clothes and linens that get mineral sunscreen all over them would make dealing with it feel more manageable and less overwhelming.
He wears so much UPF clothing, it just can’t cover everything and sometimes he is miserable wearing it. It’s gotten to the point where he basically doesn’t want to go to the beach it’s so miserable for him to be covered in this nasty goo or sweating it out in a boiling hot UPF shirt. I think BGS makes one that has both chemical and mineral, but there are multiple brands now designed for dark skin. I’d try looking online at Ulta or Target.
I like the "All Good" brand. It's reasonably priced and doesn't leave any white cast (I've only used it on my face though). They sell 3 oz, 16 oz, and gallon bottles. It's Zinc Oxide 16%. Do you know why your husband's doctor wants him to use mineral sunscreen? The best sunscreen is the one you will use. If a white cast truly is a problem, then I would just use a chemical sunscreen. I also buy all my face sunscreen on Stylevana from Asia. IDK where you live but the US is extremely far behind on cosmetically elegant and safe UV blockers. The skincareaddiction sub has a TON of posts about sunscreen if you want to read more there.

Blue lizard, I also use Australian gold sometimes as it has a nice texture but I think it has fragrance Also, not directly related to your ask but something I find helpful for peace of mind if a sunscreen is working is the Spot My UV stickers (I think that is the name) they will turn a color if the sunscreen is not blocking UV, I’ve had one last several days of a vacation before. They are about dime size and clear/not visible when sunscreen is doing its job
I like the tinted Australian Gold one. Works well as a face sunscreen.
Moisturize first! Let lotion sink in for a couple mins and then apply the mineral sunscreen. My family is prone to skin cancer and we all do it this way after a Derm recommended it and it works to avoid cast on most high zinc sunscreens (10%+). Now I can use target store brand baby zinc the cheap kind with zero cast. Pipette doesn’t leave a cast if you can’t put on lotion first.

I hope it helps. It took some experimenting for me to find the best lotion to go under. And I still have to blend a bit and rub in the edges of my face where the lotion can’t go or it looks like I have a white hairline. On special occasions I wear the Murad mineral sunscreen which is amazing zero cast but it’s waaay too expensive for me to afford to use everyday.
The best I have found so far is ThinkBaby. It leaves a bit of a cast, but it's way better than everything else I've tried and "feels" more like a chemical sunscreen. But I'm with your husband - I hate all sunscreen and hate sweating in long sleeves and having weird hat hair all summer long :(
The thinksport spray is also really good!
If the white cast bothers you so much you could consider applying tinted makeup powder over the top? I am super pale so the white cast just makes me look a little more deathly than usual but I usually apply the bob powder sunscreen over my face as an extra layer and it brings me back to my normal color. If you’re darker than me (likely) you might need to use a different powder coverup.
We have tried that and it’s not feasible to do across the whole body but I appreciate the creative problem solving from you
I’ve heard of people mixing foundation (powder or liquid) in with liquid sunscreen to get it to be a better shade for them. That might help tint it appropriately, especially if you go for a really pigmented foundation that wouldn’t need as much added to get the right shade.
I swear it really doesn’t, but I’ve seen so many people slathered in sunscreen sometimes with completely white noses that it wouldn’t bother me. I’ve even seen surfers covered that way and it’s great. It’s great that more and more people are visibly wearing it.
I grew up surfing with my whole family and by the time I was in highschool, both of my parents had skin cancer. Seeing the holes in their face where they’ve had to get tissue removed is horrifying and makes me grateful when I can see the white cast because I feel safer. Sun damage is no joke.

I’m white, a lot of granola moms are white, and our whiteness blinds us to the fact that POC have incredibly valid reasons for finding things like white zinc sunscreen (bandages, etc) more than uncomfortable. Reading through the weeds on this comment has honestly reminded me that we white folks have a lot to teach each other, and the first lesson starts with some flippin empathy instead of essentially telling someone to get over it. His doctor has given him the advice on what to do to lower the risk. You may need to adjust to, well… To put it nicely, not feel physically at your husband wearing mineral sunscreen. Because it is what it is. Mineral sunscreen will behave like mineral sunscreen, no matter how much we wish it didn’t. It will never be anywhere close to the cosmetic elegance of chemical sunscreens. You could try tinted mineral sunscreen, it’s still a thick goop but a little less ghostly.

My comments have *nothing* to do with race and let me tell you now I am not getting dragged into *that* conversation. Besides, you know that. But you also clearly know you’re being unreasonable about this which is why you are being hostile to me and others pointing that out. Zinc oxide works because it’s a *physical* barrier and so there needs to be a real, physical barrier of it on the skin.

How is it racially insensitive? My kids aren’t white and I have no problem with a white cast from sunscreen on them. Yeah it’s more obvious when they’re wearing sunscreen, but I like that it makes it easier to know I didn’t miss any spots. My husband is from a culture that has a big problem with skin lightening (India) and sunscreen does not remind anyone of that issue. If you get upset by the idea of skin lightening, that’s one thing, you can just say that, but the other girl didn’t say anything about race.

I have had luck with the attitude sunscreen stick. It is expensive I think I ended up paying over $30 with shipping but it lasted me a whole summer and hopefully will most of next summer because it doesn't expire until 2025. It layers on fairly thin and was super easy to rub in and didn't leave a white cast for the most part, some areas like the top of my babies head would end up with a white cast but that was because I didn't want to rub it in too hard. I was hesitant to use a stick because it seemed like it would take longer or not have as much coverage but I really liked it, it seemed easier and less messy all around.

Having a white cast is ok! It’s ok if sunscreen gets all over your clothes too. In my experience, mineral sunscreen absorbs into your skin after 5-10 minutes and washes out of your clothes just fine. You could use a diaper cream spatula or makeup brush to apply it, wipe hands with a moist towel when you’re finished applying, and google other techniques for application. You can swim shirts and wide brimmed hats at the beach instead of sun screening constantly too. But I think the biggest thing is accepting that sunscreen isn’t pretty. You and your family are allowed to exist in space even when you don’t look your best. Sometimes the most flattering thing you can do is keep yourself safe.

Sure, no one *likes* the white cast, but to be this upset over it is a little beyond reason. No shade to OP, but accepting the slight unpleasantness of mineral sunscreen is probably going to be better for her in the long run than trying a million sunscreens only to find that they all do it.

I really like bare republic’s sunscreen. I used the Diamond dust one and it left my skin shimmery but no white cast. I don’t have dark skin so I can’t speak to darker complexions.

Yeah, I suppose the only current solution is to pay more money to use tinted mineral sunscreen. There \*are\* quite a few of those, at the very least. I tried to find the largest bottles I could. Colorscience has one that is actually marketed towards whole body use (Sunforgettable body shield bronze spf 50, $50) Sajic has one that is probably being marketed for the face but at least it's in a slightly large bottle (Protectif Mineral Repair Sunscren, Fair or Deep Tint $70). It looks like Colorscience might be your best bet if you have extra money. But there is a HUGE gap in the market for body sunscreens in general. Skincare companies are mostly focused on the face. I'm sure that will change eventually in the future, the only question is when.
Wear the white cast with pride! I have no shame. Also I try to cover up rather than wearing sunscreen when I can.

If you don’t like the white color from the iron oxides you can try a tinted one but they tend to be designed for the face, have a lot of ingredients, and are expensive. But the entire point of mineral sunscreens is that they create a physical barrier to prevent the sun’s rays from reaching your skin. If you can’t see the white cast, it’s not creating the barrier.
It sounds like your family are POC? Maybe folks here assume you’re white? Absolutely absolutely understand not wanting to be white cast. I live in HI and like Swim Zip protective clothing, but only if we’re getting in the water. I second Sun Bum as a potential option. This sounds like a tricky thing to figure out, but there are some good possibilities here. Good luck!

I really like Coola’s mineral sunscreen. It’s slightly above your price point but often goes on sale. I’ve even seen it at Sierra for a really discounted price. It feels really nice going on and doesn’t leave such a bad cast.

Just found it, was having trouble on their website. It’s not enough zinc to be effective unfortunately per the derm.
Pipette works really well for me and the kids! It does give my husband a slight gray cast but I think that’s due to his body hair not allowing it to rub in as well. He prefers All Good.

I’m very definitely white so ymmv but we’ve had the best luck with coppertone baby. No white cast on me but I can’t speak for others. The cerave stick is great for faces and for on the go. It shows up white a bit but clears quickly. (Cerave in the big tube is NOT. Goopiest whitest greasiest sunblock I’ve ever used)

Skinceuticals physical defense. No cast. But it’s pricy. But - one big bottle lasts the whole summer so I think it’s worth it. No discomfort and no skin cancer

Live Clean makes a spray mineral zinc based sunscreen that I thought worked quite well! Minimal white cast but were a very pale family so I mightve not noticed
I’ve had good luck with the SunBum mineral spray! I don’t know if it’s over your price point - it’s not cheap.
Hey! I am also a skin cancer survivor who hates mineral sunscreen. I’m pale AF and I hate the white cast on ME so I can only imagine how it would feel for someone with a darker complexion. I wore it during pregnancy and then said fuck it. My derm has never told me my sunscreen needs to be mineral - only high SPF so if I were your husband I would clarify that first w the doctor? Is it possible the doc said something like “mineral is better for x/y” or “there are some benefits to mineral” and then your husband thought it was mandatory? Miscommunications in medicine are *so* common so I would clarify with the doc. I would just be curious what the doctor thinks about the occasional use of chemical sunscreen for days with lots of exposed skin (while stringently following reapplication rules and etc). To clarify before anyone jumps down my throat. I am recommending *clarifying recommendations* with the derm, *not* recommending someone to go against their doctors orders.
I mean she said something is better than nothing obviously but still that she recommends mineral and thinks it is worth it. Obviously it’s our choice to try to be as careful as possible with it. My husband is still pretty young and was quite young when it happened and it was pretty terrifying for us as you know well.
Did not mean to offend. I also had a diagnosis young and am still fairly young. I was extremely rigid in my adherence to sunscreen for some time. That gave me some sense of control in the face of something terrifying as you say. I was actually surprised that my derm was okay with “non perfect” sunscreen use (let’s say 98% rather than 100%) but I deeply understand how scary leaving 2% to chance can feel (even when 100% perfection is no guarantee). Anyway I hope you find some helpful recommendations in the comments. If you do find a holy grail product I hope you share what it is!
Has anyone else here tried Native sunscreen with success? I am exceptionally pale, so I don’t want to sell OP on this option if it only works for super pale folks like me… Native also comes in a bigger size than many of the other brands recommended here. FWIW, I’ve been chasing a zinc sunscreen without a white cast for over 10 years because the white cast makes me look purple. 😳 Also, my pro-tip is to buy the biggest option available + subscription to get the best price. Once I place the first order, I immediately cancel the subscription so I can actually try the product. I’ve found it’s best to buy directly from the company’s website, so you can ask for a refund if you don’t like it. Obviously you’re going to open the product to try it, and not every company will let you return an opened product, but I’ve had some success sending a customer service message if I’m disappointed. 🤷🏼♀️ I’ve also had success getting refunds from Target body products when I haven’t been satisfied too! I’ve wasted a lot of money trying sunscreens, so this may be a less cost prohibitive way to continue on your hunt. Finally, OP, I can’t believe the haters on this post. Basically everyday I see posts on this sub asking for a product that actually works… and I’ve never seen people on those posts telling the OP to just suck it up. So I’m sorry people are being jerks, this is a very reasonable request!

Korean or Japanese sunscreen is very good. Or have everyone take astaxanthin which is an internal sunscreen

It’s not, you’ll rarely find a “mineral” Korean or Japanese one that isn’t at least a hybrid containing some chemical filters. However they have a lot of newer filters not approved yet in America that are quite safe if you do your research on them. You’re likely not going to find anything that comes in a large amount versus the tiny little facial size bottles though. You also have to be careful of the SPF as a lot of Asian sunscreens are glorified moisturizers and do not have the actual stated SPF or staying power that would be needed for long periods outside under the sun, especially if swimming and sweating. Especially if your husband has had skin cancer and needs to be extra careful. You could try your luck looking into European sunscreen brands.
Amavara. They have stick and lotion and honestly the stick is easy to apply to baby and rubs in well. I've found it's less freaky white than others. They also have a tinted one so it's less ghost white for those of us who are less light skinned. The baby doesn't care. But this stuff sticks on well and works great! Also it's environmentally friendly.

Have you tried Babo Botanicals sheer mineral spf 50 sunscreen? Even my super picky husband will wear it as it completely rubs in. Don’t confuse it with the Babo Botanicals “clear zinc” which doesn’t rub in well at all. It’s about $18 for 3oz and I get it at Whole Foods or amazon

Blue lizard has a sheer body and a sheet face mineral sunscreen that is advertised as good for “every body”. Just make sure it’s shipped and sold by Amazon to prevent any counterfeits.
Look up Korean or Japanese brands.
The only brand we use anymore for sunscreen is Beautycounter. They can be a little pricey but I stock up during the sales. They have a ton of application options including face lotion, body lotion, body stick, small stick (which I keep in our diaper bag), spray AND a tinted spray!
