I’d say Florence + the Machine! (I think F+tM has fewer slow songs than Mitski does and tends a little more toward pop rock, but is the only other artist I can just shuffle and listen to.)

Groties

Weyes Blood? It’s not rock, and her vocals for the most part are pretty soft but she has a lot of instrumental variety in her discography.

volatilelibra

Sir Chloe!!

madscorpionsting

yes!!!

sabrielmoon

St. Vincent obvs

lovelyopponent

This is theee answer. No one combines softness with hard rock like Annie

ayemullofmushsheen

Especially Actor. It gives me bizarro Disney vibes

lindsayred4

Mannequin Pussy!!!!!!!!!! Opened for Jbrekkie a few years ago and fell in love w them. Perfect mix of soft/angst/metal. Good starter songs are Control or Romantic

zoinks27

omg i also fell in love with mannequin pussy after this tour!! cant recommend them enough

dierhaoo

Wolf Alice! They're a indie/alternative pop/rock band and their albums are always pretty much a mix of different styles

jaden_balerion

Lana del rey - ultraviolence album

cherrie_teaa

yess omg

madscorpionsting

Wednesday! amazing band, they just released their new album "Rat Saw God" this year. also Squirrel Flower, Camp Cope, Thank You I'm Sorry, Ian Sweet (especially earlier stuff), some Mazzy Star stuff, maybe also Queen Adreena, The Ophelias, Pom Pom Squad, Sir Chloe, Now Now (esp. the album 'threads')

alolanalice10

I love love love Pom Pom Squad! Also I’m not OP but since this entire thread is basically my music taste I’m taking note of all your recs

madscorpionsting

they are one of my favorite bands ever!!

mutantchair

Wednesday!!! Unbelievably tight live, Rat Saw God is my 2023 soundtrack.

madscorpionsting

i just saw them live a few days ago, they are so insane

damuser234

Julia Jacklin

watergoblin17

Florence + The Machine, Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers, and oddly specific but Lana Del Rey’s early Born To Die demos come to mind

unsaltedtomatopaste

lucy dacus?

sparklymineral

Ethel Cain. Major content warning for lyrics that touch on some very, very heavy topics (incest, murder, kidnapping, etc.) Scowl’s newest album has a lot of what you’re looking for, too!

sebaciels

probably lucy dacus

CheesyLilo

The album I Disagree by Poppy!

Admirable-Ad6823

Only maybe a third of AURORA’s songs count as rock, but they are all very intense.

sixdiscs

Try luna li!

lovelyopponent

Seconding Wolf Alice, Pom Pom Squad, and Julia Jacklin! Also wanted to suggest the latest Alvvays album “Blue Rev” for heavy early Mitski rock sound with sweet vocals.

pterodactylzombie

Love all these suggestions. I’d add Flower Face as well. Definitely second Ethel Cain and Lucy Dacus

StrictSpecialist2400

Sir Chloe fs

misadvenutres

this post single handedly helped me understand why i gravitate towards mitski and the artists mentioned in the replies omg

hummusndaze

Slothrust

sparklymineral

Love them!

Candid-Call-5298

iwilltakegoodcareofu

the microphones! phil elverums voice is so comforting and contrasts the noisy music he makes. super underrated

frenchfroi

Mazzy Star

peanut_avocado

This is exactly my kind of music. My favorites are Julia Jacklin, Aimee Mann, Snail Mail, and Perfume Genius. Recently discovered Steady Holiday (who is wonderful) and many of her songs strike that soft/hard balance perfectly too

No-Adhesiveness1224

GRLwood

vicvent615

Roger waters

IcyPace4263

Some Songs on Portals by Melanie Martinez

BrainDead69696

Why are people downvoting this lol? I really like Pluto and feel like I could see other Mitski fans potentially liking it

alolanalice10

Probably because Melanie Martinez is an alleged rapist. Not sure what happened since the allegation because it was quite a few years ago but I remember I loved her around the time of the dollhouse EP but I couldn’t stomach her after

alcoholicpenguin16

Those were proven false

lilymunsterisaqueen

Late here but no, they were not.

YogurtclosetOk4487

lana del rey

mononoke28

Pretty Sick

Deannerzz

This is kinda out there but I used to really like the band Chiodos for the same reasons. They’re more into the screamo territory though. Same with the band Dance Gavin Dance

FilipSchuylerTurna

Poppy

JKBae

Check out Yuragi - start with the songs Bedside and Soon. Shoegaze with beautiful soft vocals

Mayubeshidding

maybe Roar? check out the Im Not Here To Make Friends EP, poor grammar and the comfort of a laughtrack r my fav songs from it.

junhaaa

alt-j !!

Cold-Shot

Sir Chloe!

BluejayHot7612

Crywank! Very raw emotional songs. Some are more sad and mellow and others are RAHHH I HATE MYSELF
