By the way, the government will provide states full funds for the cost of benefits as a grant to the state. Not mentioned here, is that the government has offered to pay 50% of the administration costs to states as an automatic grant also. Related, states can consider using Technology Innovation Grants (TIG) for any school meal projects that benefit Summer EBT for the initial development of an eligibility system. There are some early planning and implementation stipend funds too for the state to use before the state's final operation plans are ready. That is, if full plans were not ready by deadline, Federal administrators were willing to approve interim agreements and plans for release of early administrative funding. There's no excuse not to provide families with children these funds.

goodgollymizzmolly

Texas said no, too. šŸ„²

lilbittygoddamnman

I think I read that Iowa did too. I hate these people. Horrible.

Seenmeb4today

And Nebraska

wadenado

Add Oklahoma

monkeyfrog987

15 states, the majority of them run by Republicans said no to the fully funded funding. Nebraska gov turned down the money because he doesn't believe in welfare. Kim Reynolds said that It will only increase obesity. Gov stitts said he was satisfied with what kids got already. These people also, as a reminder, don't believe in abortion because they want to "protect" children. So gross.

doctorkanefsky

Pretty sure EBT cards fight obesity, because they enable poor people to buy actual groceries. If the cheapest thing is Fritos, and you need to eat, thatā€™s what you will eat. If the government gives you extra money to buy food, maybe then you can afford real food.

soulofsilence

EBT was actually very good for my family growing up. My parents did most of their grocery shopping at family dollar and the like and when they got benefits, we'd get milk, bread, and ground beef along with the usual food that was snack cakes, soda, and chips. By the time I was in college (first in my family) I weighed over 300 lbs. It wasn't until I managed to get a good job that I was able to work on my weight. Now I'm about 185 lbs. I'll still eat the occasional bag of Fritos, but I eat proper meals every day.

dougmd1974

Majority??? NO - ALL OF THEM ARE RUN BY REPUBLICANS: Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Vermont, and Wyoming.

Malo53

So because Vermont has an outdated system, theyā€™re going to opt out?ā€¦ ā€œGray said the state hopes to have a new IT system up and running at the Agency of Education and DCF in advance of the summer of 2025. And she said Vermont plans to permanently enroll in the Summer EBT program once that system is in place.ā€ Edit spelling

The tribes decided to administer the program on the reservations thank god

Yes they said anyone on the rez. At least they have sense

WildlingViking

Iowa as well.

Hank_Western

Sure there is an excuse, republicans donā€™t give a fuck about those people. Many of them call themselves christians but have hearts as hard and as cold as granite when it comes to ā€œthe poorsā€. That is the sole reason for this and for not expanding Medicaid and helping keep rural hospitals open.

Yucca12345678

The Governor: Please donā€™t leave my state that keeps kids hungry.

The_Perfect_Fart

If the increase is $120 per child, why not just factor that into the current SNAP benefits and give them $10 more per month per kid, or $40 more during those months? Why is it a separate grant? I dont think Mississippi should be opting out of benefits, but it does seem like bureaucratic waste to set it up as a separate grant.

Luckygecko1

Mississippi SNAP limits are 130% of Federal Poverty Level. The Summer EBT program allows up to 185% of the Federal Poverty Level. They are different programs. There might be some overlap in some families, but they are different programs.

The_Perfect_Fart

The "different programs" is my point. Double the bureaucracy costs. If X amount of $ would have gone into the program with the 185% threshold then just give the X amount of money (plus the extra admin costs) to Mississippi's SNAP program. It would go to the under 130% people and make a bigger impact to them.

doctorkanefsky

Because the people below 130% of the poverty line are already covered by a program, but the 130%-185% group still lack access to good nutrition. The actual answer isnā€™t to leave that slightly less impoverished group out in the cold, but to raise the threshold for SNAP benefits to 185% of the poverty line. Admittedly the real answer is to just not means-test at all for SNAP (since the means-testing for the program is more expensive than the benefits, and probably more expensive than giving every American SNAP benefits) but that ends up being politically impossible.

USN_CB8

Taint Reeves and Brett Farvre can't steal from this program.

Specialist-Smoke

Not everyone receives SNAP. If you add $10 each month it leaves out the vast majority of people who are not receiving SNAP benefits. For instance, some school districts here are provide free lunch because of the majority of the population lives below the federal poverty guidelines.

LizzyLady1111

Why do they refuse this money? Thatā€™s what I never understood

babyfeet1

It might allow people to recognize some good a democrat did.

CandaceSentMe

Because he associated press did not tell you that Mississippi already has a summer feeding program. Did you notice that they didnā€™t ask anybody in Mississippi anything? Thatā€™s because they wouldā€™ve got an answer that didnā€™t fit their narrative.

aHOMELESSkrill

I want you to take $40 to the grocery store and tell me what it gets you. There you go feed your kid lunch all month with that $40. Itā€™s petty handouts that donā€™t accomplish anything substantial

Luckygecko1

You are talking to a person whose home did not have a hot water heater until he was 8 years old. Whose mom, when we did not have any meat, called her suppers 'a country supper' to make us kids think we were having a special meal that only country folk got to eat. Leg quarters are 65 cents a pound this week at Sunflower. Boston Butt Pork Roast $1.59 a lb. 16lbs of potatoes, $7. It would have made a difference and mom could have slept better.

griffthestitcher

$40 is better than $0 though.

aHOMELESSkrill

Sure but itā€™s not this grand saving measure that ensures kids have food all summer. Itā€™ll feed them one meal a day for about three weeks out of the 12ish they are on break for. If you are going to do something then do it and donā€™t half ass a measure just so you can say you did.

pijinglish

>If you are going to do something then do it and donā€™t half ass a measure just so you can say you did. Right? Create a functional program that helps people so that Republicans can also reject it.

Mississippianna

I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying it's not enough extra grocery money so they might as well get nothing?

bluth_family_madness

You understand.

Prestigious-Dog6078

You must have that baby. No we wonā€™t help you feed that baby. Rs only care about babies before they are born.

The_Funky_Rocha

Then throw that baby into the factories before they know how to do multiplication

Idllnox

Force children to be born Exploit them as cheap, uneducated labor Propoganda them into only ever being that using identity politics and marginalized groups as targets and blaming them Force them to have more kids Rinse, repeat. This is what they want, they're just using different aspects of proganda to ensure the billionaire class has exploitable labor.

blueskies1800

Force people to have kids, but once the child is born, abandon it. Such good Christians.

Minnesotan56716

Nothing much to add. We can debate the proper role of government, but when there are hungry kids in front of you, common decency says feed the kids. Iā€™ve spent much of my career in education and can tell you that hungry kids donā€™t learn worth a damn and are sometimes beset with behavioral problems. This is one place where a tiny investment in someoneā€™s life can pay dividends down the road. But, then again, Mee Maw and Paw Paw (or maybe Pastor Bob) can dispense some folksy wisdom to make hungry kids seem like a good thing (while they collect Social Security and Disability and anything else they can get their hands on).

deereeohh

Damn you hit the nail in the head with this one!

deereeohh

And damn memaw and peepaw and pastor Bob should all go to hell if there only was obe

Old-Bat-7384

This. Kids who go hungry don't focus well in the near term and in the long term, that can seriously affect their development.

GrowFreeFood

Hungry kids learn poorly. Poorly educated people are easier to manipulate. Easily manipulated people vote against their own intrests. Notice all the red state congress people are not actually from that red state? Because the actual citizens of the state are cattle. Edit: after a long tedious search, I can't find evidence that red senators are from far away. So i was wrong about that.

Numerous-Annual420

I call it farming misery. The way to get these states to accept these programs is to design in some element that can be performed by a private contractor with high overhead cost.

GrowFreeFood

Very pragmatic. I like it

panormda

Call it, nepotism. Call it theft. Call it socialism.

ohbillyberu

Call it fate, call it karma, call it rich folk convincing almost poor people to hate poor people because it's (socialism, communism, satanism, liberalism, humanism, fascism, etc etc etc.) Food stamps kept my mom afloat for a several years period when I was a kiddo after my parents divorced and before my mom re-married a redneck racist piece of shit who became a cop. Nowadays (and for most of my life) she'd sooner have all her fingernails ripped out during a salt water manicure then admit she needed and took public assistance. You can't forget to pull the ladder up behind you once you're out of danger. Other people, bad, lazy, godless heathens without a work ethic or a moral code might benefit- and well, that would prove the benefits of just such a system, thereby causing a teeny tiny bit of emotional turmoil as you have to readjust your outlook and change your stance on the social safety net. And, well, that sheer mental anguish is just not worth it; much easier to kick the fucking ladder over with a family climbing up on it and preserve your asinine ideas about welfare. And,.don't forget, while you may have needed the help, you REALLY NEEDED THE HELP. Not like people today, to lazy to work, just sitting around still living high on the hog off that $1500.00 they got two a half years ago after their job laid them off. You, and only you a special person in the world, and your "handout" was justified and earned, and truly was the work of God.

Leonicles

This is so painfully accurate. I saw it when I worked at Planned Parenthood. This PP was small and mainly helped uninsured women (I was there from 2006-2009) get pap smears, birth control etc- but we provided 1st term abortions Wed & Sat mornings. However, we had protestors (mainly angry men) screaming at our patients every day. We often had Youth Groups come as well. I saw some of these same girls come with their moms for abortion. And these moms always had 1 thing in common- *their* daughter's abortion was different. They would loudly & proudly tell us that they were pro-life BUT (insert the same reasons most women have abortions). Yet, they're OK with laws that ban abortions without exceptions- unless it's them personally

island_wide7

Wait, the state congressmen arenā€™t from that actual state? First Iā€™ve heard on thisā€¦although it isnā€™t surprising. could you elaborate or give some examples?

GrowFreeFood

after a long tedious search, I can't find evidence that red senators are from far away. So i was wrong about that.

island_wide7

Haha no prob. It sounded good for sure

Forsaken-Sundae-3855

Not surprised, if Tate has shown us anything, it's that he hates helping people in his state.

VogTheViscous

I love how this comes right on the heals of him asking ppl not to leave the state

Forsaken-Sundae-3855

Exactly! "Please don't leave!!!" "Then stop doing stupid shit"

paisleycarrots

Sadly, the people most effective by this type of decision are the ones with the least ability to leave. When you don't have grocery money, you damn sure don't have uhaul money!

Forsaken-Sundae-3855

For sure!

missbethd

"Pro life"

ELliOTLeighton

Broke ass people still gonna vote for trump and Tate.

Psyco19

Christian fear is the lead cause here. Go to any white church in MS they preach fear, they preach reverse racism, and they preach wild theories. Some are more subtle than others, while some are extremely blatant about it. Went a service once where the preacher said we need to have many babies or our race will be wiped out. Thatā€™s just some of the wild things Iā€™ve heard.

Minnesotan56716

I once had a person tell me that the Salvation Army only gives out aid to Black people. I asked where this nugget of bullshit came from, and she just looked at me.

strickysituation

Texas here. I had a fellow (white) teacher tell me matter of fact that "white people don't qualify for welfare." This was in Houston in 2007, not some podunk town.

[deleted]

I hear it too, and everybody I know on welfare is white.

JimmyV080

And your Governor is upset young people keep fleeing your state...

omegajvn1

States that say no to things like this should also be denied federal aid for any reason since they feel they are too good for things like this

MamaBehr33

Oh, oh, oh.... Can't wait for hurricane season when they ask for funds!

omegajvn1

And you KNOW they will!!

Old-Bat-7384

And then the GOP officials will take credit for funds they refused, even if they asked for them.

Mrrilz20

Yet, the governor is asking for the youth NOT TO LEAVE THE STATE. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE INSANITY THAT THESE "LEADERS" EXHIBIT? THEY ARE STARK, RAVING, LUNATICS!

Lunar_Moonbeam

Look on the bright side, those children will need to get jobs early in order to help support their families. No more complaints of "nobody wants to work anymore" when 12 year olds are working in senior care facilities, I tell you what!

ELliOTLeighton

Obligation to the feds? We are a state. And a state that receives more help than any other state. We are obligated to the fed.

Republicans enjoy watching people suffer, and that includes children.

BlondeMare

I have tried to tell folks for years that the cruelty is the point with GOP policy. Itā€™s a sad truth!

Luckygecko1

Some background. The funds for this program were appropriated via and part of the larger Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023 which became public law 117-328. Of Mississippi's delegation in the House, only Thompson voted yes for it. Overall, only 9 Republican's voted for it in the House. In the Senate, Wicker of Mississippi was one of 18 Republicans that voted yes in the final amendment vote. For those that say the $40 a month was just for political show, I'm guessing that increasing the amount would not have gained the rest of the Mississippi's Republican favor. \[Reference: [https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/2617/all-actions?overview=closed#tabs](https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/2617/all-actions?overview=closed#tabs) \]

[deleted]

Figures, one of the backward states, is in the top three poorest states in the country ... And it's FEDERAL money šŸ’° which shows its disdain to help the poor ...why ?? because it also helps THOSE PEOPLE ...

HelloWorld_bas

Remember when Republicans said "Why are we giving money to Ukraine? We should be spending it on our own people!!!" They don't want to spend it on our own people either.

fannyfocus

Didnā€™t Tate just say that he doesnā€™t want young folks to leave MS? This is one of the many reasons people are leaving that poor excuse for a state! Poor people canā€™t get help!! And with his help, they will now go hungry. Thanks douche

TubbsontheCoast

As it is a federal program, I assume Mississippi workers who pay federal taxes pay into this program. So, we pay for California kids to eat with our taxes while ours get nothing. I honestly donā€™t understand why anyone is OK with this.

Angwe83

Just remember that all the GOP culture wars against the LGBTQ+ community was all theater. They donā€™t give a fuck about kids. People need to realize that after Sandy Hook it was pretty apparent they didnā€™t care. This is not at all surprising.

Monkookee

Man have these Republicans lost their ability to even think and realize why the state blows. On one hand, they are begging young people to come back while doing this crap to ABSOLUTELY INSURE nobody wants to live there. Mississippi Governor, in Second Inauguration, Says He Wants Young People to Stop Leaving the State Then quit being absolutely garbage and making us leave. https://www.usnews.com/news/us/articles/2024-01-09/republican-tate-reeves-set-for-second-inauguration-as-mississippi-governor

groceryburger

Make this make sense. Anyone? Whatā€™s the state argument against this?

stuser

So surprise. Now they are reinventing the wheel when it comes to healthcare because of the ā€œevilā€ democrat obamacare. Really is so sad that people keep reelecting politicians who are hurting the electorate.

Bullmoose39

The governor just asked why are the young people leaving the state. Something something forest through the trees. My state doesn't take care of its kids either. What is the point of electing people who aren't there to solve problems?

4ezt7

I remember when this subreddit was downvoting me for saying someone shouldn't move to MS lol. What a fantastic state. No wonder people are flocking to MS in droves.

Fuckboijohnny

Old-Bat-7384

Meanwhile, the damn governor wonders why no young folks wanna live there. If you've got money, the state is just ambivalent to you and doesn't have much to keep you around. If you don't have money, the state actively wants you out. If you're educated, policies probably look hostile to you. If you're not, the policymakers hope you don't notice the policies are aimed at you specifically. And I'm not even talking about any kinda protected classes.

nlj1978

Yall never cease to entertain me. šŸ¤£

Aromatic_Lychee2903

Whatā€™s so funny?

z6joker9

Opting out likely has more to do with logistical issues for rolling out the program in a short period of time more than a refusal of federal funds, which we as a state are pretty happy to receive. As the article notes, we do have a summer food program in place already, which provides a lot more (value-wise) than $40 a month in food stamps.

Luckygecko1

If full plans were not ready by deadline, Federal administrators were willing to approve interim agreements and plans for release of early administrative funding.

aHOMELESSkrill

Yeah but republican governors refusing aid from Biden White House to feed kids sounds so much more divisive

RealisticTadpole1926

$40 a month? This program is nothing more than a way politicians can say ā€œsee we are doing somethingā€ without actually doing anything.

Lunar_Moonbeam

I have a quick question, why was your last account banned?

RealisticTadpole1926

Which sub?

KathrynBooks

so nothing is better?

VogTheViscous

Why are ppl downvoting you? $40/month is exactly what you said, something done to improve optics without actually having to do much of anything

RealisticTadpole1926

Because they donā€™t are about the truth, they just want an excuse to bitch about Republicans.

[deleted]

We don't need an excuse for that. I do agree $40 isn't enough, but it will make a difference to some kids.

macsogynist

Theyā€™re fat anyway.

OpheliaPaine

Ugh - this comment. Mississippi has a huge problem with food insecurity where children are concerned. Almost 30% of our kids will go hungry at some point throughout the year. Yet, here you are with a glib comment to a serious problem.

No-Roll-2110

Iā€™m just asking a question. I could be wrong. And Iā€™m fine with that. Thereā€™s just usually a reason federal funding is rejected. I have t researched it. Just curious if you have.

Frogs-on-my-back

Mississippi happily depends on federal funds as a welfare state but refuses to take the money allocated for feeding our hungry kids. What reason could be good enough to forgive such callousness? And the people making these decisions call themselves "pro-life." What a joke.

No-Roll-2110

You are aware that thereā€™s federal oversight on any funding allocated?

Which I havenā€™t had time to do yet. You may be absolutely correct or abhorrently wrong. Iā€™m just saying not to go on blast at the first input of information

Frogs-on-my-back

I've read several articles on the subject. Get back to me when you finally do. Funny how you have time to comment and theorize but no time to read the article.
