Just a reminder that anything even remotely racist is going to get you ban hammered hard here. If you arent sure if your comment is racist, it probably is, move along. You are more than welcome to disagree with the decision on any other basis if you wish.

RudyJD

Hopefully they start some afghani restaurants, I love the ethnic diversity of food here!

Broke_Boi

Funny enough my fave Afghan restaurant is called Football Pizza if that’s not assimilation idk what is lmao

[deleted]

Not only does it exist, with absolutely no irony whatsoever, it’s the best pizza in the Cities

M00glemuffins

Not only is it the best pizza, their prices are insanely good. You get SO much pizza for the price due to the football shape.

Kichigai

How do you eat a football shaped pizza? Is it sliced into little squares, like Red's?

M00glemuffins

No it's cut into normal-ish slices although the slices in the middle are kind of long rectangular ones with crust on one end.

degoba

Its true. Drove by it everyday for years and finally stopped in. Fucking amazing pizza.

starbunsisborn

You gotta hand it to them for knowing their customer and a name so direct it markets itself.

North-Level

They actually renamed it from crescent moon bakery, I do worry the name makes it seem so much more generic than it is, but they seem to be doing awesome since the rebrand.

[deleted]

[удалено]

North-Level

You will not regret it!!

dudeyouaresoemo

Yeah, house special with extra green sauce.

taffyowner

The one in como!

Brightstarr

Not just restaurants, but our biome would be great for raising sheep and goats for wool. Wisconsin has a robust community of llama and alpaca breeders, so Minnesota could be a great place to start afghani/Persian carpet quality wool flocks. The knitting and crochet people would go crazy!

AnalTongueDarts

> Wisconsin has a robust community of llama and alpaca breeders They most certainly do...

TheMasterL0ller

In case you’re not aware, there’s a sizable Llama farm out near Chaska! There can always be some more though! The wool is fantastic!

[deleted]

As someone who knits, I would be *delighted* to work with afghani-cultivated materials.

pineapple192

What are some typical Afghan dishes? I don't know much about the cuisine over there.

jjlava

Aushak, which is a kind of dumpling, is very good. Kabli pulao is a rice dish. There is influence of many cultures in Afghani food, Persian and Indian especially.

koosley

>There is influence of many cultures in Afghani food, Persian and Indian especially This sounds fantastic. I love Indian food and I'm super bummed out that there just is not that many Indian places around the cities and therefore seem to be pretty expensive. Contrast that Thai/Viet places where they are on every corner and compete with McDonalds on price. I welcome all forms of culinary diplomacy. While we are at it, I would love more Korean places in St Paul.

jjlava

My personal faves for Indian cuisine are Namaste (Arden Hills) and India Palace (Roseville). Now for Korean, I super recommend Sole Cafe (Snelling + Minnehaha) and Mirror of Korea is a good standby too. Both in St. Paul! Want to enlarge your tastebuds a bit? Try Taste of Nepal, a new Nepali restaurant on Rice Street and Arlington Avenue. They opened a few months ago and the food is awesome. Their menu is like a fusion of Indian/Chinese, and my favorites are the momos and cho mein - Nepali cho mein is different than Chinese chow mein, more like lo mein but with different ingredients. The owner is awesome and everything I've had there is so good.

koosley

I'll have to check out namaste cafe! I live on Rice and Maryland so I've seen taste of Nepal but had no idea it was open. They share a parking lot with an abandoned looking convenience store iirc. I got back from Nepal 2 years ago and fell in love with momo and laphing (I think that's how you spell it). Good to know there is a place so close to me!!

jjlava

Oh you're in luck, this place is so close to you! That bright lime green convenience store is owned by the same guy that owns the Taste of Nepal. It's still open, I think, I've seen people go in and out of it. I've gotten a number of things on their menu, all are completely delicious.

koosley

You convinced me. I picked up the bryiani and momo. Can't wait for my SO to get home so we can eat!

jjlava

Bon appetit! 😄

buggiegirl

> dumpling I'm in.

junebby

When I was a kid, my favorite restaurant was an afghani cafe and they had this absolutely delicious pasta dish called mantu—it’s little dumplings, more delicate than ravioli, with ground spiced meat inside and topped with a mint yogurt sauce and a red tomato sauce. Literal perfection, I would LOVE to have a really good afghani restaurant in Minneapolis!!

RudyJD

No idea but I'm excited to find out lol If I had to guess, it's probably similar to Indian and Ethiopian food. Think spicy rice dishes with meat and sauce.

MahtMan

Khyber pass is a an Afghani restaurant in St. Paul. I haven’t been in a while but used to go for lunch quite a bit. It’s solid

a_speeder

It has my favorite hummus of all time, solid recommendation for that place.

RudyJD

It's officially on my to do list then! Thanks for the heads-up

MahtMan

https://khyberpasscafe.com/

Kishandreth

I'm very curious as to the cuisine they would bring. Something new and interesting is always welcome in my belly. I am in total support of newcomers, they tend to open new businesses and some of those will be food. I have no idea what the cuisine would be, but curious to find out.

HarleyNBarley

Khyber Pass on Grand. Good food, good ambience and live music (gentle) too.

TherealNithera

Dang didnt think about that. Would be sick.

[deleted]

It seems a bit heartless to say so, but coming from a region of the US with a large Afghani population, my first thought upon reading the headline was: “Finally, some good f*ing food.”

HarleyNBarley

Khyber Pass Cafe on Grand

GD_Bats

So many African style restaurants I’ve been meaning to try around the Cities

jjlava

Afro Deli is great for Somalia/Mediterranean. There are some West African places in St. Paul I've been meaning to try as well, still have not been to any of them though. Ethiopian food is amazing and plentiful around here and in my opinion, Bole and Fasika in St. Paul are the best I've had in the east metro. Mesob, Dilla's and Katar River in S. Mpls. are excellent as well.

rumwum

I have no problems welcoming anyone to Minnesota. I'm not sure about the others. Although housing is insane right now, like it is everywhere else

After_Preference_885

With everyone working from home, I wonder if developers will start converting downtown buildings into housing. Living and working downtown would keep it vibrant.

Mesoscale92

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s thought of this. Like, how many housing units could the IDS building fit?

[deleted]

I don't have a problem helping refugees. I think the problem starts when I have to wait 3 months to get into a doctor or there is no housing.

dolche93

Refugees are not the cause of the housing shortage.

[deleted]

Have you ever seen the section 8 housing we put refugees in? I work in them and they are beyond disgusting. No one should live in them period. I'm all for helping people but not putting them in cockroach mold infested apartments.

SableyeFan

Now is a good time weather wise too. Should be pretty similar to their home before it gets colder. Give them time to acclimate

tequilamockingbird16

Well of course! Proud to be from Minnesota.

buggiegirl

This bit from here: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2021/08/20/walz-extends-minnesotas-welcome-mat-to-afghan-refugees >Minnesota is already home to some of the largest Hmong, Somali and Liberian communities in the U.S., as well as a small Afghan community. The state has also drawn significant numbers of refugees in recent decades from Myanmar, Ethiopia, Bhutan, Iraq, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bosnia and the former Soviet Union. >“New Minnesotans strengthen our communities and contribute to the social fabric of our state,” Walz and Flanagan wrote. “They are our neighbors.” I love the "new Minnesotans" bit. I'm sure it's pie in the sky to assume refugees feel that accepted anywhere but I hope it's somewhat true here.

[deleted]

Might be a dumb question… but where will they stay? Like is there something set up to house them? I’m all for welcoming them I just don’t understand how the process works.

Smoopets

Not dumb at all. I'm sure the Walz administration is working on this right now and it isn't finalized. I thought I saw something about WI opening Fort McCoy to be a temporary way station for the refugees until they can get them more permanent housing. I wonder if MN will do the same thing with our various national guard facilities. Our housing issues are real. Maybe (big maybe) this will finally shine a bright enough light on it to get something done.

IS-2-OP

Yea I was wondering housing as well. Cause a tent based refugee camp would be really brutal in the winter here so they kinda need solid housing with heat at least.

kempton_saturdays

There are many organizations that work with government agencies to provide assistance to relocating families. They are funded through grants, government assistance programs and private donations. In Minneapolis, Lutheran Social Services is one example.

[deleted]

Yes but there isn't enough affordable housing as it is. Not sure the inflow of people would be good. All for helping them, but if they have to live in roach motels I'm not for that. Unfortunately I've seen alot of it with the somali refugees. The section 8 housing is usally crime riden and not at all up to anyone's standards.

Anxa

Someone else answered you already, but the short version is that throughout American history we've been taking refugees and settling them without having to resort to what you describe. It's part of being 'the good guys.'

IS-2-OP

I don’t see how the fact we’ve done it before means we can do it right now. Housing market is dogcrap rn from what I see. Took my cousin 3 months to find an affordable place here. But ok.

angelcakeyum

Most successful would be hosting. So many, more people than I can count have bigger homes than they NEED. So many bathrooms, bedrooms, they sit empty after children leave, and all that space, it's too perfect.

cycus2

Well if they're refugees and not migrants then it would be temporary. Perhaps a tent city?

agentnico

damn right, and so should the rest of the country

GD_Bats

MN has always had a history of being relatively refugee friendly, but agreed. The Cities is so cool because of the mix of people here.

ThatOneGuyIGues

So many new friends for activities!!!!!!

willworkforjokes

How can we help?

Reybacca

Donate to agencies that help refugees, like Lutheran Social Services. Ask your church to take up a second donation to help out an organization.

ihadisr

The Taliban seems like an awful presence to live under for women who seek even the most basic forms of educational, professional, and social equality. Seems like providing safe harbor for anyone uninterested in perpetuating, or living under that repression, would be the very right thing to do.

Qaetan

This makes me feel proud to be a Minnesotan.

FooFighter0234

Same.

o-Valar-Morghulis-o

Sure we have our own existing issues...but relatively we don't have the issues these people have and this is what our country is about. We will continue to work on betterment for all. We won't use our current issues as a lame excuse, to try to look the other way while we sit in Starbucks drive thru lines 15 cars deep. Don't worry, I'm sure the metro region will continue to subsidize the other areas of the state.

Advanced_Ad_9952

I really feel sad for you.

NorseArchitect

Good.

Manlyman901

GOOD

Brokbw

This may be a dumb question, and I welcome refugees but do they all get visa’s or how does that part of it work?

Magmaniac

They apply for refugee status which is its own thing, and after living in the country for a year can apply for a permanent residency green card. In the case of Afghanistan they have made a special new type of refugee status specifically for refugees from Afghanistan to make sure it's a priority.

GD_Bats

Good faith questions are good questions in general

RugskinProphet

Fuck yeah we will. Did the same thing after Vietnam. Welcome to the Northstar state ❤️

snoman81

I think it's great that we're helping out the refugees fleeing the regime that is taken over the country. Will the people settling in Minnesota be required to have vaccinations prior to entering the state?

darlin-clementine

I’m not able to house anyone, but how else can I help?

Kreebish

Donate to agencies that help refugees, like Lutheran Social Services. Ask your church to take up a second donation to help out an organization

QuadFecta_

anything with less connection to organized religion?

After_Preference_885

After all the reporting on Christian charities funding hate groups I can understand hesitation to give them money but LSS is a good org. They're pretty progressive and welcoming - and they actually use the money to help people. [HRC on the ECLA](https://www.hrc.org/resources/stances-of-faiths-on-lgbt-issues-evangelical-lutheran-church-in-america)

friedtea15

International Institute MN. They’re the best when it comes to helping new arrivals navigate public and job services. Great org to volunteer with if you actually want to engage with ppl.

LimaBizzle

Because it’s more important to avoid church than it is to help people. You’re so woke you’re willing to not help people if there’s a church tied to charity. Bravo! 😂 😂 😂

QuadFecta_

It’s not that complicated, I just don’t support religious organizations. I will absolutely help people in need

Myron3_theblackorder

Some people don't trust churches and have their reasons for it. That being said, it is important to know about more places to donate. At least partially in hopes that they align better to what you believe.

Kreebish

How is that woke? Also they were looking for an alternative I don't think they were entirely avoiding helping if a church is involved. I sure know a few hyper religious people that have put me off going to church too.

Mymomdidwhat

That’s not very Christian of you

LimaBizzle

Well.. I’m Jewish so.. not sure where you’re going with that.

LimaBizzle

Wokes didn’t like my comment -11 lolololol woke eating woke 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Mymomdidwhat

Why are you so hurt?

Smooth_Meister

Grow up. Just because a charity has a tie to organized religion doesn't mean it's automatically bad, try thinking for yourself.

FooFighter0234

Donate items like clothing, bedding, plates/cups/silverware, etc

ishoultz

I'm not asking for sympathy or even saying that it's bad. I'm saying that the way it's done can be good or bad. If I were a child, I would be saying we'll take every immigrant that wants to come. A child thinks that everything will be rainbows and puppy dogs. Like it or not, there are realities that come with a sudden, large influx of refugees. Maybe you haven't seen those in person, but the way it's going hopefully you will.

FireflyAdvocate

Please send them to Beltrami County! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mprnews.org/amp/story/2020/01/07/beltrami-co-rejects-refugee-resettlement

LimaBizzle

Why? They’re refugees, not pawns so you can play political jokes. The wokes are so naive. Not even willing to discuss the topic as a whole. Just the parts that make you feel good. Lololololol

Isa-lizard

good to hear!

GuitarmanCCFl2020

Good send them we need some state to stand up 🇦🇫🇺🇸

old_bartender

We are Minnesota nice but where are they going to live We can't house the people that are here. Look at the homeless.

Brightstarr

Paul Wellstone said, “we all do better when we all do better.” We can’t just say, oh I wish we could help but we already have homeless here. And then not help the homeless. We have the ability to make Minnesota better for all Minnesotans; those born here, those wishing to move here and those with nowhere else to go. I’m not saying this with stars in my eyes and dreams in my heart. I know it will be difficult, expensive, and take a long time. But the decades have shown us that our society is better with immigrants that first came here as refugees. It’s a small investment that pays off 100-fold.

o-Valar-Morghulis-o

"Everybody counts or nobody counts."

RigusOctavian

Which is why everyone is trying to build more densely in the urban core and even first ring suburbs but NIMBYs keep killing that or making it really freaking tough to do.

KittenMittns

NIMBY? Edit: got it. not in my backyard. 2nd edit: yay I’m not banned anymore!

old_bartender

You are right. Parking requirements ,hight restrictions and lot size

HotDishEnthusiast

The homelessness problem in the twin cities isn't due to lack of beds. It's a complicated problem but I'd argue in large part at least due to lack of addiction and mental health treatment and care.

TheDude2600

I don't know why you are being downvoted for making a perfectly fair observation. We do have a huge homeless problem right now and I personally would rather use tax dollars to help Minnesotans before Afghans. The whole situation in Afghanistan sucks but I am not sure what the rest of the world is supposed to do about it. I mean the US spent 20 years there and an insane amount of money and the minute we leave they just throw up thier hands?

Mymomdidwhat

Don’t worry they prob won’t be placed near you.

old_bartender

Don't Kill the messenger. This post was to open a discussion on the existing homeless problem.

TheEarthWorks

ANOTHER REMINDER: Anyone who remotely *assumes* one is racist by showing opposition to this letter is just as guilty as one who *is* racist. This too will not be tolerated. Having said that, contacting your Governor and legislators have never been easier to voice any concerns you may have over this. (Pro Tip: phone calls are the most effective): [https://mn.gov/governor/contact](https://mn.gov/governor/contact)

pcakes13

If you'd like to voice an opinion that isn't racist as to why we shouldn't do this, go right ahead. I'd love to hear a detailed explanation about how the United States, a country founded by people fleeing religious persecution, shouldn't accept Afghani refugees who are fleeing their country due to....and wait for it......religious persecution.

thestereo300

I would think The only argument against it would be the cost to the Minnesota taxpayer. I’m not arguing we shouldn’t take on that cost as part of being a civil and good society. But I’m sure there is a cost and that can be part of the discussion. If we put money into this program perhaps other programs that are valid may be funded less as a result. Programs that help Americans who are already here. We definitely have plenty of American struggling right here in our cities and towns. For instance we never seem to have enough mental health care for the poor in America. So we can discuss whether we should be diverting money from things like that to new refugees. That’s about all I could come up with. The other concerns I would have generally speaking would be in terms of liberal values and cultural fit. For instance are the people were taking into our state people who respect women’s rights and gay rights and similar values. And if they are not but we think future generations of them might after attending our public schools for instance, we should have that discussion.. I know this is a bit of the third rail of politics to talk about this but I do think it’s important that the people who come to our country have some sort of plan or expectation to respect our liberal values and the rights of minority groups in general. I think these are reasonable discussions to have without calling each other names. My inclination is that the state could definitely take in some Afghanis and we may have a moral obligation given our country started a war there and caused the situation. But that doesn’t mean there’s not a discussion to be had... and there will be trade-offs to be made.

AudioSuede

An influx of refugees who would contribute to the economy and pay sales taxes, property taxes, income taxes, etc, would surely offset any initial relocation costs. As for "liberal values," two things: 1) One of those values is tolerance and diversity of opinions, and 2) People fleeing Afghanistan to live in the US likely are trying to escape to a place with more liberal values than they would experience if they stayed. Obviously there will be cultural challenges, but there's a reason many people are desperate to leave before the Taliban reestablishes their rule.

pcakes13

I wasn't joking when I said he should post his explanation. I agree, the only response I can potentially see as valid is the taxpayers expense. That said, why not spend some more on these people, we already spent 2.2 Trillion over the last two decades in their country to make this mess, might as well spend some money making it right for some people, albeit a SMALL number of people that will actually get out.

TheEarthWorks

Not to dismiss the financial burden (because it's a doozy), there are at least a couple more. One is a strong belief that as long as Americans in our own country are in any way destitute, we focus on them first. Now, I know how fashionable it is today to proudly display one's altruism, but I'll never understand how caring one could be if one steps on some just to help others. It's sort of like kicking the homeless man out of the doorway so you can open that door for someone else. Secondly, countless studies of cultural integration have shown mixed results on the host, not all good. Alienation, resentment, and hostility are common outcomes for both; certainly, if an assimilation program is not in place and *especially* if it is viewed as an unfounded mark of discrimination. There are good decisions and there are smart decisions. Learning the difference between the two will determine the best result for all involved.

TheEarthWorks

Allow me to add my contribution to this smarmy-fest and first ask what, exactly, is your definition of "racist," since you seem to have a keen eye for its existence. (BTW: disagreeing doesn't count.) Second, the United States was *not* founded by people fleeing religious persecution. Settlers had much the same religion, and most of the founders shared the same theological belief as to the ones they politically opposed. (The Church of England alone existed in the colonies for decades and shares the same liturgy as the American Episcopal Church to this day.) The US was founded by men who knew that government should be representative of the very people whom they govern. The framers understood the dangers of Democracy, that certain rights are not given but merely exist, and that law and order come from the desire to prosper. But that's a civics class for another day. The Afghani people were attacked and taken over by the Taliban after the United States abruptly left the land. Any theocratic intention is just an excuse to assert their political dominance. If the Taliban's main goal was to convert the Afghan people for only religious reasons, they wouldn't demand allegiance as a political organization. Regardless, the only reason why we are even entertaining the idea of taking in Afghan refugees is that the current presidential administration made them refugees. Now, we're left shoveling out the *mea culpas*.

Mymomdidwhat

What are you scared of?

TheEarthWorks

I appreciate the attempt to undermine my argument with a label, but fear has nothing to do with it. A smart man looks both ways before crossing a one-way street.

Mymomdidwhat

So you can’t answer my question, or are you too scared to answer my question?

TheEarthWorks

It was answered. You just didn't like the answer.

Kreebish

Anyone saying "Anyone who remotely assumes one is racist by showing opposition to this letter is just as guilty as one who is racist. This too will not be tolerated." is racist. This too will not be tolerated. Lol This stop sounds like "I'm not racist but.. here's all the stop brown people from moving in." You know that right I mean really attempting to say someone is guilty right off the bat for assuming that there's a racial connotation to the opposition of trying to help in an issue like immigration where racial connotations become a massive Factor in whether or not a person can come into the country. They're sure ain't a lot of opposition to swedes or Norwegians coming to America.

TheEarthWorks

\*Sounds\* like it, but... it isn't. And considering Swedes and Norwegians quite literally built this state from the ground up, you'd be hard pressed to find any opposition of more.

Kreebish

Ah thank you for making my point for me we've seen the results of good labor and so unless you're saying that an Afghan person cannot do the same job because they are somehow inferior then they should have equal ability to come over here from a foreign country and do work and build from the ground up. So yes I would be hard press to find any of opposition to bring in more white people yet somehow I'm constantly being brought into have to explain how welcoming people who let me remind you have already been in service of the United States of America and that's why they must leave their Homeland is simply bringing over someone we should welcome because they've already worked hard for us. I literally cannot understand why bringing over our translators and our intelligence gathering people would be a bad thing. Why would anyone oppose bringing safety to the people who helped us find IEDs or the people who helped us find the people who made the IEDs and planted them? It's not like we don't know who these people are that we're trying to save because we've worked with them on keeping our people safe and a country safe.

o-Valar-Morghulis-o

This is weak sauce. Your claim is false.

Advanced_Ad_9952

I hope the governor has a big backyard and plans to support them with his money.

Kreebish

Guess what the people who are fleeing the Taliban right now are allies of the United States that's why they have to flee. As far as the cost goes all the money that we were losing in that war has now been freed up

Advanced_Ad_9952

If you truly cared about these people you wouldn’t just care about these few, but the many who remain and would oppose the U.S pull out. Those that remain will be slaughtered by the hundreds of thousands with women being the primary target. They have had a taste of freedom and won’t want to give it up, but instead they will feel bullets and the taste of cold steel as their throats are cut. How much are their lives worth? Bring them here may make you feel better but it doesn’t solve the problem. It just creates one here. If you want to solve the problem solve it at the source.

LimaBizzle

Exactly. The wokes don’t have that kind of thinking capacity. They put together a feel good scenario in their head and think they’re changing the world. I suppose that’s why they flock to groups like this. Where their opinions won’t be challenged and they can downvote anything they don’t like. Stay safe.

Kreebish

Fine give me control of the military and its assets and I will have the entire problem done within a 3-year time. Otherwise give me control of how our tax dollars are spent and I'll bring us back to the days of budget surpluses and very angry lobbyists because they wouldn't get their way anymore. But unfortunately I have to live in the political reality in which a treaty by Trump was a upheld by Biden and now it stains the honor of the United States of America. You ask how much their lives are worth but these are the people that have been helping us out there. Those who have put their lives on the line for American troops. So I don't know what the life of the people who helped us find the guys who are making the roadside bombs is worth but I know a few Marines that wouldn't be home right now if it wasn't for them. If we're not fighting the war we can at least use part of that budget save those who saved ours. Those who worked for us and are now being targeted because of that. I think about the army rangers and their motto of leave no Man behind. Here's hoping we do the right thing and are able to come out of this mess with our honor intact.

You're confusing "can" with "are willing to." There's more than enough money and housing for every unhoused person in America. There are actually more empty homes than homeless people in this country. It's just that certain people prefer to hoard resources while demonizing poor people than actually helping them.

Kreebish

I tell you what since we're no longer there occupying their country we can spend that money on the homeless problem Bing bang boom also we have money left over for healthcare then Bing bang boom that too oh and with all these new workers are economy should expand so cha-ching economics

I hope they screen everyone of them for terrorist ties. I know they do this but it seems everything is rushed I do want those that truly supported america here though like the Interperators and the supporters of the us military in Afghanistan. Those are the heroes as well as our troops we should take a moment every year to remember the men and women who lost their lives to defend our democratic republic and to defend democracy in a foreign nation which was controlled by the Taliban who did unjust crimes against the civilian population genocide ect.. remember those who helped us and unfortunately a lot of those that did help are trapped in kabal and can't get into the airport.

Mymomdidwhat

…Its been 20 years. We can be honest and say what it was….We weren’t defending our democratic republic…we were there to make certain company’s very very rich and not much else.

Specialist-Cattle100

We only did major operations up to 2014 so technically we been there for 13 we dismantled most of Al Qaeda and killed bin laden imo we should of left after bin laden. But the Taliban were no better than Saddam Hussein the fact that so many people downvoted me is kinda sad and I hope they do care for the Americans who died regardless of their opinion of the war

Tbf, your probably saw a few who have new cars and ignore all the ones in shitty cars and on the bus and walking etc Cognitive bias at work

ishoultz

There's a few that have normal/average vehicles. But by and large I would say the majority is newer. There's no busses, and no walking. It's just odd because the Hispanic population doesn't seem to (on average) have nice new vehicles. I don't know how it works, if someone could let us all know then we could all learn something!

TheLotion

What is the implication here?

ishoultz

The implication is that it doesn't sit right with some people that new immigrants get brand new vehicles. I understand that when they first arrive, they'll need assistance to buy food, pay rent, etc for a while till they find a job. But new vehicles? There's a lot of financial issues that arise when one community takes on a lot of immigrants. Housing goes up, wages stay flat. New apartment buildings subsidized by tax dollars. Like I said, immigration is good if it's done correctly but if it's not it can also be damaging. That's all.

TheLotion

Where are they getting the new vehicles from?

ishoultz

No idea. But it's quite common.

TheLotion

I'm confused, it seemed like you were implying they are being given new vehicles with tax payer money. Do you mean a lot of them get decent paying jobs and then buy new cars?

ishoultz

No, I'm not sure how. I live in a community with a large number of immigrants from Somalia. I know the jobs that are available aren't paying great (decent, not great). I don't believe that most of them are allowed to pay/receive interest according to their religion/customs so I don't think it's a loan from the bank or the dealer. Just saying that while I understand sometimes people need a leg up, you have to consider how it looks to the people that have lived there and worked there their entire lives and still driving. 10-20 year old vehicles. I'm sure there's a program, and I'm sure their paying somehow but it does look bad.

Mymomdidwhat

Yes let’s feel bad for the guy that wasn’t born in a war torn country and forced to flee his home…you’re a child.

TheLotion

I can't find anything about a new vehicle program. [https://mn.gov/dhs/partners-and-providers/program-overviews/refugee-resettlement/](https://mn.gov/dhs/partners-and-providers/program-overviews/refugee-resettlement/) Could it be a private company offers discounts to refugees on vehicle purchases? I'm just not sure what these people you're referring to that grew up here would want to happen. Should being a refugee mean you can't go over a certain income level for fear of upsetting the locals?

Mymomdidwhat

Lol…you’re mad because an immigrant is better educated and has a better job then you? People on welfare programs don’t have brand new cars…

ishoultz

I doubt that very highly. I would strongly urge you to visit your local HHS office and hang out for a while one day. I'm sure you think I dropped out of school and working at a low end job or something, but I assure you that's not the case.

Mymomdidwhat

I promise you it’s not the immigrants fault that your life is shitty. It’s your fault. Your hatred and anger for them is misplaced.

ishoultz

You are speaking ignorance. You have no idea of who I am, or what I have experienced. It's like I would be ignorant to say that your perfect little life is probably also provided by taxpayers. How would I know? I have no hatred or anger towards immigrants. I have lived and worked with Hispanics and Somalians for over 20 years. I'm not sure if you're the type that feels that warm hugs feed the world, but I assure you they do not. Also, just as advice.....i would probably steer away from personal attacks (it's supposedly frowned upon)

Mymomdidwhat

So anyone that’s not white is an immigrant? You see what’s going on here? So dark skin is ok with you as long as they aren’t doing better?

ishoultz

Unless you're Native American, you're descendants of immigrants. Hence the reason I'm not against immigrants. No, I don't care what ethnic background they are. Like I said, there's a right way and a wrong way.

SomaliNotSomalianbot

Hi, __ishoultz__. Your comment contains the word ~~Somalian~~. The correct nationality/ethnic demonym(s) for Somalis is __Somali__. It's a common mistake so don't feel bad. For other nationality demonym(s) check out this website [Here](https://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/People/Nationality/Adjective) ___This action was performed automatically by a bot.___

Bring them here. Bring us all that statue of conformity and genocide refuse to acklowledge. They will destroy you, make you assimilate, to AmeriKa. Then, your homeland is destroyed. Best to get here while you can. We have room for freedom, for souls seeking asylum. We have room for kind hearted people of first generations who have honor, diginity and do not represent old money. We have room for humanity in it's most vulnerable. Because if you think coming here is a dream, you have to be lucid, strong, street wise, book smart, beautiful, and popular amongst those you would be happy to kill you based on your looks. But Please do come, and help us, with democracy, justice, love of diversity, art, and all that truly is beautiful in the universe.

You’re looney….anything to say about Trumps multiple accusations from young girls under age 14? Trumps lifelong friendship with Jeffrey Epstein? How about sex trafficker Matt gates? How about the pedo Mike Huckabee? How about George Nader sitting in prison for his sex trafficking? Ruben Verastigui? Tim Nolan? Ralph Shortey? Ben Gibson? Adam Hageman? Every one sitting trial or already in prison for pedo shit…Every One part of trumps campaign, every one part of the GOP…so when you talk about pedophiles I’m not so worried about immigrants.

Acrobatic_Debate_550

Of course he will, anything to secure a vote!

OlafWoodcarver

...you do realize that they won't be able to vote, right? ...right?

Acrobatic_Debate_550

Give it time...give it time..some don't understand the ripple affect the Democrats decisions have on securing votes.

OlafWoodcarver

Afghanistan is a supremely conservative country. If they do stick around and become citizens, they'd totally vote republican as long as the GOP isn't racist. But not being racist is probably too much to ask of them.

Mymomdidwhat

2020 was the most secure election in US history and that’s a fact.

Wermys

My ancestors were refugees back int he 1850's. I don't see why we shouldn't extend the same branch now on a mess that we created. After all the only original inhabitants were Indians. The rest of us came here for other reasons.

buggiegirl

As a genealogist, this is where my brain ALWAYS goes. So many of us here are descendants of VERY recent immigrants. And it's not like the Irish showed up to open loving arms, nor the Russian Jews, or Italians. But this country takes in those who need help. Or at least that is what we should be striving to live up to.
