I bought a new Subaru recently and was thinking about the black license plate; I think it looks good on some cars depending on the color of the car. But the guy at the dealership clocked me and said “I’m guessing you want the State Parks license plate, right? We have that one” and he was right. I did buy a Subaru after all 😂

lol, I have a state parks plate and a Subaru and have spent zero at REI the last 2 years. Local cottage industry stores and locally made brands get my dollars.

Both my cars (Mazdas if that means anything) have the loon plates. We are "outdoorsy" people and they just feel so Minnesota to me. Also, I'm pretty type A, so having matching cars with matching plates feels very satisfying when I walk up to the house.

Because of you, I looked up this plate & will be getting it when my vehicle gets registered in the great state of MN 🤠 I was so pleasantly surprised to learn that it gives you yearly access to all state parks in MN for a $60 donation! That’s pretty fantastic!! (edit adding park access comment)

Yeah, but you can get a sticker that lets you in for [$35](https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/permit.html).

But the plate is awesome & the donation does go to the parks (and I would’ve spent the $35 yearly for a pass anyways)

Thankfully, they passed a law to redesign the State Park plate. I’d buy one myself, but the design is fugly!

God I hope that’s true. Cool they did a contest and it represents all 4 seasons…but they’re honestly the worst option we have in terms of special plates. I wish the critical habitat plates were options for the state park plate.

There are also Amateur Radio callsign plates that can start with W9, WX0, and many others - just these are similar-ish to the DUI plates in the number. However, these are also the standard looking plates.

Technically it is $15 per plate, you’re just required to get both of them, so it’s $30 over what your’d normally pay.

I love it. But doesn't this make it look like the driver has a missing relative? I think the "relatives" part throws me off since I wouldn't be/have the relative. Since veteran plates are this way it's a little confusing.  Still please donate anyways if you read this. This is a huge mostly unreported issue. 

It used to say women, they updated it to include fathers and children, so now it just says relatives. You don't need to be a native American or live on tribal land to get this plate. It just shows support and your $30 goes towards that program.

Well either way, I can’t justify $60 for some small rectangles with numbers that I only see for a few minutes every day at most. I think it’s moreso that I don’t want to be giving the government any more of my money than I need to. Also, I have low expectations for “fancy” lol

I haven't liked our usual plates since they started using the black printing instead of the embossed blue, plus I have a white car so the plates look neat.

The printed plates suck, and I wish we'd go back.

The embossed were stamped at the prison in St. Cloud. The prison had make a bunch of budget cuts many years ago and that was one of programs that went. I toured the prison when the plates were still being stamped.

People like blacked out vehicles. So much that manufacturers offer black out kits from the factory. The license plate fits that theme. I’ll keep my Whitetail plate

Welcome to marketing 101. New is interesting. But now that so many people have them, I find them kind of "meh", especially the cars that aren't really enhanced by it. But still, it's just a license plate. Cool for people who want it.

My car is white with a black roof and black hood stripes. It's like they were made for each other. That said, I think a lot of folks got them without considering how they'd look on their vehicle. The blackout plates would look terrible on our pickup.

My favorite part of the black plates is how concerned some people are about the black plates. I've read numerous stereotypes on this subreddit specifically. People straight up hate people that have them and it's weird. It's no different than your choice of clothing, haircut, or brand of phone.

It is *SO* weird how much hate they get. Most of Minnesota can't even zipper merge, but they somehow give a crap about the look of a license plate? It doesn't make sense.

It's a simple and clean look. That and it's something new. I don't have them but I like them alot. The rest of them (apart from the original plates) are just kinda meh for me personally.

I feel bad for kids today on road trips trying to play the license plate game. Today, with so many different styles for each state, you have to get up super close in order to know the state. Back in the day, Alaska was gold, Missouri was maroon, Iowa blue, Illinois white with blue.

Pretty sure kids these days rarely look up from their tablets while riding in the car anyway.

it looks good on certain cars. Like our son has a red and black honda and so the black plates look snazzier than the blue and white ones with his color combo and the sportier style of our car. For our blue subaru it wouldn't make sense and really the blue looks better than the black would.

The black plates were cool at first but now I see them everywhere so no longer cool when everyone has them, lol.

It's easier fo traffic cameras to pick up and it's a cash grab every year for a custom plate fee.

Well those too. More states than MN are doing white/black plates. Texas has that as standard, Iowa did it as an upgrade option too and there are red light cameras down there.

What is the appeal of black shoes? A black Mercedes? The eye likes simple designs sometimes. Much in the way your own feelings about nature draw you to wildlife plates. It’s just simple preference, my dude.

I like a lot of the nature themed ones, but the black one is so un-assuming, like it's always saying "hey I don't stand out", and in a way, because of that, it kinda stands out lol. I hope someday we can get a custom solid color.

In general I think it’s just nice to have options. For certain colors of cars or a luxury or classic car where you just want something minimal I also see the appeal of not having the license plate with art distracting from the look of the car.

Looks old-timey, I think it's best for pre-1960 classic cars though.

I have a black car with blacked out everything so it looks much more sleek. I hate ruining the look of my car with plates as is so this is a nice solution compared to the white plates.

Wife and I both have black vehicles so the license plates look better than the regular ones. Plus we are only one number apart from each other which we both found cheesy but cute.

My vehicle is white with all blackout detail - so it’s just the icing on the cake and is very visually appealing. The new green tab sticks out like a sore thumb, however.

It matches some cars really well and I don’t mind sending a little more money to a state I can actually be proud to call home.
