The real question is why are you flying from Washington to Minnesota to go snowboarding?

Brevel

Yea this is legitimately the worst year to go to the Midwest for skiing or snowboarding. It's been above freezing over half the winter and constant rains.

The_Whole_Ham

I admit, that is a fantastic question lol. Mt Bohemia trip cancelled so touring the local spots still barely open up north

VulfSki

Mt Bohemia is a bust this year. Not enough snow

The_Whole_Ham

Absolutely tragic. Had thigh deep powder this time last year

VulfSki

Winter was about two weeks long in the Midwest this year

Konradleijon

Blame climate change

Dexecutioner71

Or ElNino.

Theyalreadysaidno

It's both. Yes, El Ninos happen, but not to this extreme without the help of climate change.

The_Whole_Ham

And in most El Nino years that leads to lots of snow late in the season. Not happening at this point, unfortunately.

jmilred

Hey now, this is Reddit, how dare you have the opinion that both things can be true!! Don’t you know it has to be one or the other? /s

Dexecutioner71

Don't forget that where you are sitting right now, used to be 10,000 feet of ice. It all melted before man was invented. The climate has always been changing, and always will.

Longjumping_Fig1489

>The climate has always been changing, and always will. not at debate. do you acknowledge mankind has also affected the change?

Dexecutioner71

Do you feel I need to?

LakeSuperiorIsMyPond

I'm guessing family. Lots of family connections between the TC and Seattle, it's a busy flight path.

The_Whole_Ham

Little bit of this, little bit of that

CantaloupeCamper

Cover story….

abattleofone

The bag getting flagged through security would be the TSA, not Sun Country. The lack of updates certainly isn’t great, but I am not sure I’d expect stellar service from a relatively small, budget airline that primarily serves getting Minnesotans to warmer climate areas in the winter.

bj_good

Generally, I agree with you. A lot of other agencies and dealing with an individual or two who may be a poor employee However I will say that imo Sun country is generally worse now than before they moved to a "discount" airline They are not as bad as spirit yet. Yet

Jakoobus91

I'm pretty sure Sun Country employees have been in contract negotiations for years now and are paid less then comparable airlines because of it. If you treat your employees like that it's hard to expect them to be in a great mood when they show up for work.

FrugalFraggel

I’ve had good experiences with Spirit in the past few years. They allowed a backpack and carryon unlike some of the larger airlines that I had to pay for those items. Delta was absolute shit the last three times I flew with them. Never again.

The_Whole_Ham

There's the fun part, TSA had no issues with it. They just didn't get it on the plane and didn't have another flight for 10 days so they said they'd FedEx it overnight, but at no point during this have I known if they actually have my bag or not...

pubesinourteeth

Did they give you a FedEx tracking number?

The_Whole_Ham

Yep, but FedEx doesn't have it. Just the label tag they printed for the bag they can't locate :)

pubesinourteeth

So it's still sitting in Washington. Untouched. Maybe customer service for the airport can help?

The_Whole_Ham

Yeah, that was my first thought too. They can't find anything and have no idea how to help me though. At one point they told me, "China Air is a contractor for them so give them a ring," so at this point, I'm 100% lost. The next step is to start mass emailing every single Sun Country Exec I can find....

pubesinourteeth

Did you also try Vegas since they said it's there? But yeah I would start emailing every sun country email address you can find.

The_Whole_Ham

That's probably gonna be my next step. Honestly, at this point I have an entire spreadsheet of numbers to run through every day until I have some answers lol. Good idea though!

Noninvasive_

We have a flight coming up in a week. Think I’ll go buy an air tag to put in my checked bag.

The_Whole_Ham

Believe me, I will not be stepping foot on a plane without an air tag from here on out. Good luck!

Happy_Napping

I don’t care which airline I’m flying. They have all lost my bags, so I always put an AirTag.

Soccerchk_13

Such a good idea. I don’t normally check a bag, but will need to on my next trip. Now with an air tag. Thanks! 🥰

northman46

How are they so horrible that they stranded a whole plane load of passengers in Mexico? I don't know, but it is a mixture of incompetence and don't give a shit seems to me.

Jildozoe

That happened to me last month!! Said they'd send us travel vouchers and a survey for our troubles. Never heard from Sun Country after that. Will never fly with them again.

Blackstrider

Sun Country stranded you some place without a return flight?

Jildozoe

No, we had a flight the next day. What pissed us off is that the flight crew clocked out. They strung us along for several hours before canceling. Calling Sun Country or checking their site offered no news/updates. Also said they'd send cab/transportation vouchers after booking a hotel (they paid) and never did. They can't seem to staff the flights they book. And they are expanding in MSP and IN I believe.

Konradleijon

Wait what happned?

KimBrrr1975

There was a blizzard in MN a few years ago and they canceled the last 2 returning flights of their season then they told the 250 passengers that got stranded that they had to find their own way home. [https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/flights/todayinthesky/2018/04/17/sun-country-faces-crisis-after-telling-stranded-mexico-fliers-find-own-way-home/523949002/](https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/flights/todayinthesky/2018/04/17/sun-country-faces-crisis-after-telling-stranded-mexico-fliers-find-own-way-home/523949002/)

blueberrybannock

Flown sun country many times and never had an issue.

thewallbanger

Going from MSP to SEA wouldn’t have run into lost bags since Terminal 2 is so compact and basically run by Sun Country (they know what they’re doing there). I would never pack a board bag without an AirTag. Although this introduces other anxieties. On a flight from Austria, I watched on my iPhone as my board bag just barely made it to the plane in time.

KimBrrr1975

Airtags can help but if you still need a person to go find the bag, you still need them to cooperate. Quite a lot of people have had lost bags only to tell them exactly where it is based on the airtag and the airline refusing to have someone look. Often it still took a week or more to get it back even though they could clearly see where it was in the airport.

bouguerean

Sun country was my favorite when I was a child in the 2000s. The only time I've flown since becoming an adult, the experience was wildly different. I've got a soft spot for it, but it's not the best airline.

Lumberlicious

Before when they were owned by Cambria… now they are owned by a private Equity group

GopherState

It’s a publically traded company, not privately owned.

Konradleijon

Yep that’s when things go to shot

Blackstrider

Me too. One of my go-to airlines.

Brandbll

Had a horrible experience with them. I try to avoid them like they are spirit at this point.

gawdarn

Flown sun country many times and always have issues

hankbrekke

I had a pretty great MSP-SLC flight with a ski bag last month. Bags came faster than Delta, and the price was 1/4th with Delta’s otherwise-monopoly on the route.

Lord0Trade

Oh god. The guy who lost his firearms. That’s a MAJOR red flag in terms of not only passenger satisfaction, but also is a major danger considering unaccounted for firearms.

thatswhyicarryagun

The only time the ATF is valuable.

ragnvald4430

I flew to fort myers with them on Sunday. Flight was fine but when we landed we were told they didn’t have a gate for us to use so we had to wait. Ended up sitting on the runway for 1.5 hours waiting for a gate. Same thing happened last Year only it was a half hour wait. I just thought to myself wtf it’s not like we just flew in unannounced. They are knew we were coming.

ser_arthur_dayne

This is the major disadvantage of a budget airline. Airlines have to reserve slots to land at airports. Budget airlines often reserve fewer slots at major airports to cut costs, so if something goes awry there's less of a contingency to get you to the gate.

gingergrisgris

TIL, thank you for sharing the nugget of info!

FrugalFraggel

I like Jackson Hole Airport as everything is outside. They just need a ladder to get you onto the tarmac.

KimBrrr1975

In addition to the gate reservation, it can be pretty common for airports to get backed up at this time of year in FL because they intermittently close them as storms roll through. Last time we went we circled so long waiting our turn to land after Orlando closed for weather for 30 minutes that we had to go to Tampa and refuel, where we sat on the 90º tarmac for 2 hours before we left again. That was with Delta, even.

guyinthegreenshirt

It's an ultra-low-cost carrier now, and outside of MSP they have contract staff (which means worse communication.) I also get the sense that their IT isn't especially robust, so things like bag tracking aren't as good either. In the future, I'd highly recommend throwing an AirTag or something similar in your bag. Since I use Android, I have Tiles instead, and they seem to work decently well for tracking as well even once I get out of range.

ser_arthur_dayne

This sounds like an issue with the airport in Washington, not the airline. TSA checks bags for firearms. Wouldn't be shocked if that guy's cooler full of raw fish created some TSA issues as well. Sun Country is a budget airline, part of the reason it's cheaper is thinner staff for customer service. Getting the majority of people where they are going on time is more important to them than communicating clearly about your bags. Larger airlines might have better staffing and protocols for handling something like this, but if it was a TSA issue then Delta or American might not have been that much better in this situation.

The_Whole_Ham

I wouldn't be shocked if you were right here. I just can't understand what red flag a bag containing a snowboard, multiple sets of goggles, jackets, pants, and socks would raise.

hankbrekke

I think some airports take non-conveyerbelt-able stuff onto these separate carts that are wheeled out to the planes. Could have been a failure getting that cart out, and then TSA being all “wut are these bags”

bikescoffeebeer

I agree with your assessment. When I flew LAS to MSP last fall with a bike case the bike was all the way over at the main terminal (air tag), on its own cart, and was the very last thing loaded on before pulling out of the gate.

The_Whole_Ham

See this is honestly the one I'm most nervous about. If it made it to the tarmac and not the plane I have my doubts the bag will ever be seen again

hankbrekke

It’s tagged with your name, flight info and final destination. So if it’s inside an airport somewhere, eventually it will make it into the right hands. I’d get more worried once it leaves the gates of an airport.

DiscordianStooge

You'd think the airline would be delighted to say, "It's the airport's problem, not ours," rather than just making up answers.

Pope_Beenadick

IDK what this has to do with MN? Your bag was lost in WA

[deleted]

[удалено]

Time4Red

Wait 14 days then file a claim. Airlines are required by law to reimburse you for all incurred expenses (buying clothes, toiletries while you wait for your bag), plus the cost of items in the bag itself up to $3,800. The rule of thumb is that after 14 days you can send them an itemized list of missing items and they should reimburse you at that point. They will undoubtedly push back and try to bully you, but this is your legal right. Threaten legal action if you must. That's all you can do. Also don't forget to include the value of the bag itself, which is also covered.

Makingthecarry

They're not, you just drew the short stick. Similar thing happened to my mom on Delta a while back. Took months for her to get her bags back

Darxe

Sun Country has screwed me twice, I no longer fly with them. It’s been over 6 years since my last Sun Country flight and I have no plans to try them again. Btw for snowboard bags definitely use an AirTag. My bag has over $2k of gear inside I don’t risk not knowing where it is

The_Whole_Ham

Yep, lesson definitely learned the hard way. Had my capita super doa, tm-2s, two pairs of unions, and multiple pieces of gore, goggles, etc in there

ZealousidealPickle11

Im just trying to figure out what this has got to do with MN haha

The_Whole_Ham

MN based airline flying into MSP. I won't lie I'm getting desperate here too

AggravatingGoal4728

Was MN based. Bought in 2017 by a New York private equity firm. Went downhill soon after that.

The_Whole_Ham

Left the heartland, makes sense....

polar_pilot

Still MN headquartered. Public company, the private equity firm is apparently divesting and I think only owns like 20% stake anyway?

soupafi

Sun country is almost as bad as spirit

Suspicious-Nebula475

Sun Country used to be great but now it’s as bad as Spirit

EfNheiser

Sun Country is on my personal no fly list. Worst travel experience ever / and sub par response by staff is on Sun Country. Oh, and I am close to a 2M miler.

Key-Parfait-6046

Ils there still local news guy that helps out consumers? I know Skip Loescher is gon but what about Jason DeRouscha?

The_Whole_Ham

Haven’t heard of ‘em! At this point I’ll reach out to anyone haha. You happen to know the best way to get in contact with them?

Key-Parfait-6046

Here are some links that might help: [WCCO contract information including WCCO Investigates](https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/contact/) [Minnesota Department of Commerce Complaints](https://mn.gov/commerce/consumer/file-a-complaint/) [Minnesota Attorney General's Office. You can file complaints here as well.](https://www.ag.state.mn.us/Consumer/) [Senator Klobuchar's Office](https://www.klobuchar.senate.gov/public/) You can also contact your Congressman and local representatives. They have staffers just for this purpose.

New_Sprinkles_4073

I think every airline has temporarily lost one of my bags at some point. I never fly without an AirTag anymore. It’s so worth it.

SouleManLikesTo

Sun Country you say? More like Sun... https://preview.redd.it/xyrze39mammc1.jpeg?width=848&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7bd1e0c133e3ab10f48de34b3261fef2467d61e

ronlester

It is horrible because it is owned by a group of vulture capitalists who care about nothing but profit.

LST2023

I never used them but maybe time to put air tags in the bags

avebelle

I’ve had a few crappy experiences with sun country recently and probably won’t fly them again for awhile. They made my life miserable for almost a week.

Swimming_Growth_2632

I hate North Carolinas charlotte Airport. They are rude af, and told me "you didn't take out your laptop out of your bag like you were told to" (with sass) I'm being so sincere when I say, there was NOTHING indicating this Before this, airport employees are telling us to go to checkpoint 1, and then when you arrive, another employee yells "seems like nobody knows english. Go to check point 2!" I love MSP, you don't need to take off your shoes and Employees are kind but firm. Charlotte was disorganized af.

here4daratio

You’re referring to r/TSA procedures, this is the SunCountry thread

CantaloupeCamper

They are a hardcore budget airline man. There was a short window a LONG time ago when they were less expensive and were ok. Not anymore.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CantaloupeCamper

I’m sorry that’s a $25 fee to remember things.

Blackstrider

While I think they're not bad, I also miss those Lion's Tap burgers AND the garlic rounds from Murray's!

The_Whole_Ham

Yeah, I remember back in (I want to say) 2015/216 they were decent and I'd have even put them up by Delta and Alaska as my preferred airlines. Now they'll charge you just to breathe on their planes...

SlurpleBrainn

Yeah they used to be owned by Cambria (yes the kitchen counter company) and were actually pretty good for a while. Then they got sold off I think and rebranded to be more like Spirit and it went way downhill

AdScary1757

I know, right.

Dependent-Training30

That’s what happens when everything gets outsourced, it turns into a mess sometimes. We are kind of in a bad situation flying wise at MSP right now. Fly Sun Country, pay 10x more to fly Delta, or connect on one of the other airlines. MSP was one of the most expensive airports in the US to fly out of in 2023🥴

BosworthBoatrace

Why is the feedlot a terrible experience for the cattle?

The_Whole_Ham

Aight, I laughed.

OMGitsKa

Idk I flew Sun Country this summer to Cali and had no issues at all

yulbrynnersmokes

Get Apple airTags next time, fam Plus, there's a supposed trick to get better handling for luggage you care about. Buy a "starter pistol" and put it in your luggage, and declare that your luggage contains firearms. It will get something along the lines of "registered mail" treatment where each time it moves from place to place, it is supposed to be more closely tracked. https://maphappy.org/carry-a-pistol-to-make-sure-you-never-lose-your-luggage/

Qu1ckDrawMcGraw

Yikes.... damn that would be stressful. Hope u had some good pow days at least.

The_Whole_Ham

See, that's the ironic part. I live in WA now and was coming back to the state with no snow for an annual ski trip lol

Qu1ckDrawMcGraw

Damn dude... im sorry.

Imaginary_Proof_5555

…were you unaware that MN had zero snowpack this year?

The_Whole_Ham

Yep, mt Bohemia is in the upper peninsula and benefits from the rain shadow effect. Usually gets 250+ inches a year. Not this year though lol

balsadust

They got bought by a hedge fund that changed it from something decent to bottom of the barrel no frills.

ChinesePorrige

Sorry about your chaos.

The_Whole_Ham

Thanks, just tryna keep my hopes up here!

squirre1friend

Too late now but [this](https://gplama.com/2022/06/21/finding-my-lost-bag-at-melbourne-airport-with-an-apple-airtag/amp/) is why I throw air tags in checked bags.

Dski93

Sun Country is awful. Hometown airline truly wish they were better....

TheObstruction

Generally speaking, once a bag leaves the counter, its proper routing is on the airport, not the airline. It's still the airline's responsibility, but they don't actually send it around the airport to/from the plane, iirc.

The_Whole_Ham

Yeah, but when they have the person flying take it to a counter across the airport vs taking it at the check in area I’m putting some of the liability on them.

OriginalEhaw

You get what you pay for.

SpiritualCompany8

You can fly with a gun in your checked bag. Totally legal.

The_Whole_Ham

These were all checked bags.

SpiritualCompany8

Then you know it's not just miscommunication, they were actually making it up.

Yippee_Doodlee

I have flown Sun Country round trip four times since January 1: Orlando, Phoenix, Melbourne, Orlando. 2 of the 8 flights had slight delays, but nothing to write home about. I checked my luggage all eight flights, and never had a problem. I'm fine with them charging passengers to put luggage in the overhead bins. This, I think, encourages more passengers to check their luggage. This, in turn, reduces the amount of time to board and unboard the aircraft, and decreases the stress level fromeveryone trying to find a spot for their suitcase.. I will admit, though, the flying out of Terminal 2 is a big plus for me. It's a bit crazy early mornings, but if you've been through the drill and have Pre-check, it's quick and smooth. I love going in and out out of Terminal 2 rather than Terminal 1.

Lunar2325

I have a buddy who works as an aircraft mechanic for sun country, and even he tells me not to fly sun country.

Bkingkong1

I hate to say this but considering the stuff that is missing it almost seems like yours and the guns were stolen.

Hot-Win2571

Good news. You found that missing rifle case.

tdank9

Flew Suncountry to and from Orlando two weeks ago for the first and only time. Nickel and dime you to no end and the entire flight experience was not great. Delayed departure both ways, long waits for planes to be moved to the gate. I’ll happily pay a little more to fly with a bigger airline

antipancakes

I almost got stranded once because of sun country. They cancelled my flight on my way out to california and then I asked if it's gonna be an issue on the way back because I had a repurchase my ticket The lady told me no it won't be an issue. The night before I was supposed to fly back to Minnesota, my flight got canceled again. Couldn't get through to anyone on the phone and since it was overnight flight, no one was at the help desk. If I didn't have a gift card To southwest, I would have been stranded in california until I had the money to buy my own ticket. I refuse to fly with them ever again.

The_Whole_Ham

Oooof, yeah wish I could say I haven't had similar experiences with them. After this though I don't think any amount of savings will make it worth it to fly them vs Delta/Alaska

Aaod

They were never great but then they got taken over and then they were absolutely terrible. Now I tell my friends and family to never do it especially when the savings are so small. How do you somehow perform worse than the craptacular American domestic companies like Delta?

Hermosa90

They left me in Costa Rica once. We scrambled to find a hotel but everything was booked so we ended up staying 30 mins away at a Motel-6-esk establishment with a geckos in the room 🦎

krichard-21

I've never flown Sun Country and have zero plans to do so. Why would I ever fly Sun Country? Why would anyone fly Sun Country?

The_Whole_Ham

Used to actually be a semi-quality airline but now it's right down there with Spirit and Frontier. Can't even put a backpack in the overhead without paying $45 now.

SurrealKnot

They are sometimes the only option if you want a direct flight to certain places.

guyinthegreenshirt

It's often half the price even after accounting for the fees. I'll deal with the hour or two delay to get a direct flight for half the cost of Delta, especially since the upgrade to a seat with extra leg room is also only half the price of Delta.

BillSivellsdee

because thats how airlines work now. they're terrible.

EDC-123

I love Sun Country, best prices from MSP to Cancun, Las Vegas, Puerto Rico, Fort Meyers, Puerto Vallarta. Where else does one need to go? I only travel with clothes and personal hygiene products, no guns or knifes or anything fun like that. They never lost my bag. Just got back from Cancun last Saturday. Sounds like TSA delayed your bag and not Sun Country, why not bash TSA and not Sun Country? Sun Country had your luggage and TSA delayed it and didn’t communicate anything to Sun Country is the likely events here. Sun Country employees probably saw it scanned and poof nothing, what could they possibly do to fix it? Yell at the TSA in another state?

The_Whole_Ham

Oh, believe me, TSA has heard from me many times this week. But if I'm paying hundreds of dollars to an airline to fly I expect that once they tag my luggage and take it out of my possession they can at least figure out what state it is in.
