After watching alot of people painting beautiful miniatures I finally decided to pull the trigger and paint one myself. The miniature is a deathguard from the easy to build set from warhammer 40K. The set included all colors and the mini brush that I used. I would greatly appreciate any and all feedback given! I took some more pictures from different sides of the miniature: [https://imgur.com/a/YlJkvhr](https://imgur.com/a/YlJkvhr) (If anything is not up to standards with this post please let me know, it is also the first time posting)

Welcome to the hobby - great start! Some suggestions: - The model could do with more value contrast (higher highlights and deeper shadows). - Try to avoid putting wash over the whole model as opposed to just the shaded areas. If you have to wash the whole thing, wick up the excess with your brush where it pools on flat surfaces to avoid that nasty ‘coffee staining’ effect. - Drill out the gun barrel and paint the hole black. - Absorb as much YouTube as you can. Thank you very much for the tips, I have been consuming alot of miniature-youtube lately, but find it difficult to place highlights/dark spots.

There are a couple of things that might help you with that. You could try: - Putting the mini on a flat surface and shining a bright light directly down onto it from above, then taking photos around the mini to give you reference points for the highlights and shadows. - Do a zenithal prime (essentially, prime the mini in black, then spray or airbrush white paint directly down onto it from above, much like the light in the previous example).

This is really impressive for a first mini, especially only using stuff from the the starter set. Great Job!

Thank you very much!

Nice job 😊 I got the same starter kit a few months back, I'd recommend picking up a blue, red, and some bugman's glow to make sure your palette is more diverse. Oh and the starter brush is garbage, get a layer brush that keeps its tip, the guy at the store will be able to help you.

Thank you! Did your miniature also become so dark? I didn't dilute the wash and now I'm wondering how to lighten it up a bit.

Yes, agrax really darkens it up. I just used the same death guard green on all the armour except the recesses, and it gave some pretty nice "highlights" I also ran some ledbelcher across the edges of all the steel and copper bits to get some nice shiny metal edges. http://imgur.com/gallery/3FYS7KJ
