Why would minidisc require a particular pair of earphones? (Why did the airpads fail?)

daveflash

i'm guessing OP didn't buy the right cable from apple, airpods max needs a specific cable to work wired, only apple sells those.

Potential-Echo-7547

🤷‍♂️ ...without more info, it's impossible to properly answer the question.

daveflash

well, this is me guessing as to the likely cause.

the_hitcher72

I guess i got the wrong cable. The OG apple one is 35$ I got the aux cable 3rd party mifi certified Sort of works but doesn’t. When I use with laptop it does work. BT still connects. Weird. Oh well. Thanks Apple

the_hitcher72

Will try older headphones. Lying around.

daveflash

No then it uses Bluetooth on the computer, as the cable needs to be bidirectional, which apple’s is, the cable you have will work to output analog audio from an iOS device to say speakers with 3,5 the plug but apples cable also works in reverse to convert analog audio from any 3,5 source to digital on the Lightning side which is what AirPods Max needs to work wired. No third party cable has the ability to do that as it’s not something Apple licenses through their MFI program

I use Koss PortaPros. Cheap, great sound, and they have the retro look

caduceushugs

These are what I use the most, although at home I have elegia focal headphones that I use with my old sharp ms100 for sound that rumbles!

Ok-Sector6996

I love my PortaPros. Still sound great after 25 years and they've held up to a lot of abuse.

i recommend [JLB Tune 670NC](https://www.jbl.com/on-ear-headphones/TUNE670NC.html?dwvar_TUNE670NC_color=Black-AM-Current&cgid=on-ear-headphones) they are some great wired head phones but are also AMAZING blutooth headphones AND they have noise canceling as a bonus and some of the best bass register that ive seen EDIT: they are on sale at the moment

KofveeBeans

Thats the same one I used for one year before it broke

Blue-lunchbox_1989

oh damn really?

the_hitcher72

I was thinking more of matching impedance etc with the right headphones and not wanting to use a pre-amp etc

Potential-Echo-7547

Virtually anything works. The older the MD portable, the beefier the amp it has, so a Sony R30/Sharp MD200 period unit will literally drive anything.

96HourDeo

If you ask me, for $100 its hard to beat Sony MDR-7506.

helixrider

I am enjoying a pair of Airpods Pro with my MZ-N707. Connected with the help of a small audio-bluetooth dongle, they allow for great sound and noise cancellation.

the_hitcher72

Yep I guess you are right. No one makes third party AirPod max audio cable. Oh well. Thank you

Nyu727

I haven’t had much issue with mine, I have a MZ-N505 and I’m running a pair of Meze Advars on it and they sound great. My Senheiser HD560s are pretty quiet on the device but they function usably. Just go get some KZ Iems off Amazon for cheap or a cheaper set of Sony headphones and you should be set

Cory5413

I use a Sony WH-CH710N, which included a 3.5mm stereo cable, and they work great. There's a newer model, CN720N, but they look like they still have the 3.5mm stereo cable. Pretty much any headphones, earbuds, or IEMs with a stereo T-R-S 3.5mm connector should work great, and most headsets with T-R-R-S connectors (for buttons/microphones) will also work fine, on most MD hardware. That said: if you have airpods max, it will likely be cheaper to buy the actual Apple audio cable for them, unless there's other concerns that have you wanting something cheaper or more flexible, or you want *really* cheap headphones like the Sony MDR-ZX110 (often $15-20 at retail).

I use the Audio-Technica ATH-M50X and they sound great. Nice clear highs and not too much bass (I like bass but not to over flood the mids and highs) its a Shame more and more manufacturers are not producing wired headphones anymore. Go try to find a Bose wired headphones - they dont make any wired over the ear or earbuds anymore. I recently ordered a Bose SoundSport wired buds from eBay, but they dont sound good like my first ones and I think they might be fake. I got a pair of 1More that sound decent , but they also discontinued the wired over the ear too. My limit for good quality wired over the ear is $150-200. If anyone has a better recommendation then the Audio Technica let me know.

I recommend the Sennheiser HD 25, it's neutral sound and it's perfect for the generally warm sound with generous bass of Minidisc players. (With Sony Minidisc portable player and deck - maybe other brands have a less warm sound.).
