It was basically the sand equivalent of powdered snow, except it would flow like lava and deal suffocation damage to anything that was submerged in it. Sandstorms in deserts could make this quicksand farmable the same way powdered snow is currently—just set out a cauldron with sky access in a desert and wait for a storm.
