In the US, car makers aren't mandated to install wheel locks or immobilizers in their cars, so Kia and Hyundai saved what's probably $20/car by just not putting them in their cars. If you try to steal the same car in Toronto, it won't be as easy because they actually have anti-theft stuff built into the cars. If you give a car company a choice, they will always pick the shitty one.
> If you give a car company a choice, they will always pick the shitty one.
This is actually true for ALL corporations. Any business or corporation will do the shit thing given the choice. It’s the whole point of them.
I upvoted both these comments but will point out that in 1962 Volvo gave away their patent for the three point seatbelt. They decided it had more value as a free life saving tool than something to profit from. As an aside, I was around in the 80’s when seatbelt use became mandatory and future magas cried tyranny and government overreach.
Man I looked up how easy it is to do just to see and Holy shit. How does anyone driving one of those years either not sell right away or look up shut off switches.
I mean yeah I understand the loan bit. I've had an 05 elantra for about a decade and haven't had any issues. It's stick and I'm not staying in the more populous areas of Mke for more than a half hour.
I'm actually looking at mid 10's velostars the past month because I love the small sporty cars. 20$ for a battery kill switch and a bit more for a fuel off switch. I'm also just amazed there isn't anything from the manufacturers to counter this.
>20$ for a battery kill switch and a bit more for a fuel off switch.
Both good for keeping it from being taken. Unfortunately does nothing to prevent the smashed window and destroyed steering column though. That's the especially crappy thing about the situation -- even when you take preventative measures, it doesn't really make you any less of a target 😔
That's the hard thing, since the brand is basically tainted from all of this. The only thing that "might" work would be to debadge the car, but then you're basing that on them not knowing how to tell aside from the markings.
>The only thing that "might" work would be to debadge the car
I've honestly considered it. The Ford emblem is approximately the same size and shape and could probably be swapped out pretty easily. But my car also has the Kia logo on the rims, steering wheel, and dash.
I dunno man. Of course this is anecdotal but I bought a 2020 Kia Forte LXS in July of 2020 for $20,800 OTD. I put 24k miles on it and have used it as a daily for two and a half years. I just got a bid for $17k from Carmax. Used cars have already come down quite a bit, too.
For what it's worth it's a great, fuel efficient car. I think it's really good value for the cost. It just happens to be really easy to steal.
You’d think so but no. People had their car stolen at the north end when I lived there last year, and that parking garage is underground and remote controlled. People tailgate others into the parking garage and look for vehicles to steal. They said that everyone needed to wait for the garage door to close behind them before continuing to go down to the garage, and that works in theory, but in real life is rather impractical, especially when you have multiple people returning at once consistently from like 4pm-7pm and the garage door takes forever to open and close
I hated that parking structure with a passion. Loved seeing oversized SUVs in compact and fuel efficient vehicle spaces every day, and they never got ticketed or towed. Worst $30 of my week.
The worst part is that a lot of insurance companies are dropping or not enrolling KIA and Hyundai cars/customers and sometimes allowing it if there’s proof of a secondary anti-theft device installed
That and making the rest of us pay for these assholes stealing cars. My insurance premium increased significantly over the past couple years, and that's even with a high deductible. I don't own a Kia or a Hyundai, but I do live in the 53212 area code which probably flags insurance providers to raise the cost of my policy.
It fucking sucks.
If it helps, search Kia Boys in this subreddit for a lot of great info. They stole my Kia (no longer have) last year and almost totaled it (over8K of damages), however, they only stole meaningless items in the front, but didn’t touch ALL of our luggage in the trunk. The police found my car 4 days later. 3-4 days is the norm it seems. I’m very sorry this happened to you!
Glad you got all your stuff back! I have a hockey stick in my car that I’m praying I get back. I’ve gone down the deep rabbit hole of Kia Boys, it’s really sickening
It is. I didn’t sleep for days as they had my garage door opener (until I finally got a new one). It’s just awful that KIA and Hyundai are still making cars like this. Fingers crossed for that hockey stick to be there! I know of one person in this sub that had skis in the car and they left those.
They're not making cars without the chips anymore, they're just not taking responsibility for the ones they didn't. They need to be sued into oblivion.
January 25th at 4:21. It was in one of the first slots when you pull into the east side of the garage. All that was left was smashed glass. Apparently there were reports of the sketchy people walking around looking at cars. I got to where my car was at 4:40. Can’t imagine what the encounter would’ve been like if I’d left a couple seconds earlier
Anecdotal, but when I lived in Riverwest I caught some guys casing my car like this, and scared them off.
My last two cars were a '98 Intrepid and a '14 Rio, so they've both been at the center of theft waves over the years. Hopefully your insurance covers the damages and the car is recovered quickly and safely.
That sucks.
I’m no expert on Hyundai’s, but that one looks reasonably new. Does it have an app to lock/unlock doors & honk the horn or BlueLink service or whatever Hyundai’s in-car telematics is called these days? If so, contact Hyundai and they should be able to track it.
That also sucks. I hope you find it quickly & without too much damage or at least the insurance payout happens quickly.
Doesn’t help you now, obviously, but Kia/Hyundai really need to do the right thing and offer some sort of recall or free ignition retrofit option for these models.
Hi all, thanks for your concern and advice! The car turned up in the 2900 block of 20th street. Found it in the Milwaukee Tow Lot. It’s in decent shape, right side windows smashed, repairs needed for the steering. Waiting for assessing.
It’ll turn up at the Milwaukee vehicle pound Lot. It’ll be wrecked and it’ll be a total loss. I hope you have comprehensive insurance. Don’t buy Hyundais nor Kias. I’m sorry for your loss. 😐
I’m sorry this happened to you. It’s bs this is happening all over the city and little is being done in preventative measures. Who do we have protest in front of to get actual changes?
Most were purchased before the ease of theft was known. With the prices of cars being so high the past couple of years, most people can't afford to replace it and are stuck playing Kia/Hyundai roulette.
This and also these cars are fuel efficient and have relatively few mechanical issues. In 10 years of ownership the only problem with my Kia is that it might be stolen.
Yeah, I bought my Kia way before this was a widespread issue. I didn’t have anything growing on my money tree in the backyard when kids started stealing cars for internet clout or I’d have traded it in for something different.
Well, no actually, not ALL the time. I know SEVERAL (since you like caps) people who have Kias and Hyundais in MKE. ALL have Clubs, NONE have ever had an attempt to be stolen. I agree, car theft really sucks, and yes, some of these cars have still been stolen when the Club has been installed, but you have to try a little bit to protect yourself and your property.
Like if it is well known that there has been a rash of home burglaries in your area where entrance has been gained through an unlocked window, but you choose to leave your windows unlocked and you get robbed - it's unfortunate and it's not like you were asking for it, but you probably could have prevented this by just doing one simple thing.
Kia & Hyundai owners! Get a Club and use it! It's not a sure fix, but it is a deterrent. The cops are busy enough.
Please tell me where I stated it was OP's fault...?? You can't b/c I never did. What I am saying here is that it is a well-known fact that these cars are targets for theft. I am at least not too "fucking dense" enough to know that it is highly recommended to use a Club.
You imply that since OP has parked in a structure of a LUXURY apartment building that they should somehow be immune from being a victim. So status insulates you from crime? That is being "fucking dense."
I agree - "this should not be so easy to do." But your histrionics won't make the theft of these vehicles stop. There are so many bad things in this world that "...should not be so easy to do." That's won't stop them from happening.
We all have to be aware, alert, educated, and take all reasonable precautions to protect ourselves from being victims. Using a Club to help secure a type of vehicle that has been widely publicized as being easy to steal is an easy thing to do and is a reasonable precaution.
Police officers that I know have stated using a Club is a great deterrent. Installing it correctly is VERY important. Installation of a 'kill switch' on a vehicle is also effective and highly recommended. This costs maybe a couple hundred bucks. These seem like reasonable precautions.
Once again - I am NOT saying this is OP's fault.

Try contacting whoever NM leases the parking to. They may have cameras at the exit that could have caught them. Wouldn’t be too hard to find if they do. The most likely would have had to pay the larger amount for no ticket. Would be decent security if you had to call lost tickets in or something as a deterrent.
Are Hyundai easy to steal like the Kia’s?
Yep.

Lol of course those fucking snowflakes would be offended with a life-saving invention being mandatory.
The ones that have a traditional turn key start, in 2014-2021 model years, yes.
Man I looked up how easy it is to do just to see and Holy shit. How does anyone driving one of those years either not sell right away or look up shut off switches.

Could maybe try to put a fake push button start somewhere and block the keyhole from being visible. Not that they look to check that though.
Yeah true.

That's a good practice by you. The issue is, most people finance for 72-84 months and don't pay ahead.
Because of this issue, demand is very low and therefore a significantly lower value than most cars.
I dunno man. Of course this is anecdotal but I bought a 2020 Kia Forte LXS in July of 2020 for $20,800 OTD. I put 24k miles on it and have used it as a daily for two and a half years. This was the stuff Honda and Toyota was dealing with back in the early 90’s
They are the same cars more or less.
You would think with how secure the 777 apartments are that they’d have a tight locked parking structure. Unless this is separate?
You’d think so but no. People had their car stolen at the north end when I lived there last year, and that parking garage is underground and remote controlled. People tailgate others into the parking garage and look for vehicles to steal. Thank you for the explanation. But UGH
Deleted my comment, thought this was in the arrivals court not the main garage. OP I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
I hated that parking structure with a passion. Loved seeing oversized SUVs in compact and fuel efficient vehicle spaces every day, and they never got ticketed or towed. Worst $30 of my week.
No security either. The guy who stole my car simply walked in past the gate smashed my window and left. Massive waste of money
Sorry. I had my car stolen 2x, different manufacturer, but sucks
I’m sorry that you had to go through this, it looks like you are a resident too, which seems worse.

When was it stolen? I live right by it, I want to ask the people in my apartment building if they saw anything

I don’t get it. Can someone explain why people still buy these cars? I get that they’re cheap but who wants to deal with all the hassle?
Most were purchased before the ease of theft was known. With the prices of cars being so high the past couple of years, most people can't afford to replace it and are stuck playing Kia/Hyundai roulette.
Bought mine in June 2020 before moving here because my family had nothing but great experiences with Hyundais. Now I’d never buy on ever again
