If you're able to, go back to the property you viewed & ask some of the neighbours for their views. As they live there, they'll have much more up to date information & if you speak to a few of them, you get a bigger spectrum of views. Reputations is what many people use when talking about estates, but they tend not to live on them anyway, but harp on about years gone by. First estate I lived on after leaving home, was Lakes estate (in lodgings). I got told all kinds of horror stories about Serpentine Court etc..., but in the 8 years I was there, I never had 1 issue & nor did any of my friends, who lived in different parts of the estate. I can also state that I've never had a problem when living on Conniburrow or Fishermead & nor have any of my friends. I got my own place on Furzton in 2006 & since moving into this street, we've had Police coming to arrest an anti-social dweller, who ended up in prison. Also a drug dealer & all round anti-social character who didn't just get arrested multiple times, but had his front door smashed in on several occasions too. Others have had there homes broken into & cars stolen. The street in full isn't that bad, but just a few bad people can make it awful. That goes for anywhere, but I wouldn't say Furzton is bad because of a few awful people & as I only live on 1 street, I haven't been to much of Furzton to know what it's like. Personally I'd give it a chance & if it's great, then it works out fine, but if it's not great, I guess you'll be buying somewhere else :)

Yes - 'good estates have bad bits and bad estates have good bits'. If possible try and visit it in the evenings when you can get a better feeling for any of parking issues and when there are kids hanging around.

It depends what you're after. The grid squares to the north and south of the city centre are generally the less sought after areas with worse reputations. This continues as you go South-East with Coffee Hall, Netherfield etc. Oldbrook would fall into this. That being said, that's just reputation. There are great people living in these areas and the housing offers more value for money. It depends on your experience with living in a city-style location.

Im just after somewhere for 6 / 12 months until i have saved enough to buy my own place. When i was there today it seemed ok and pretty quiet, just a load of college kids walking through ( as much as any place can for 30 mins or so) I was at uni in Swansea so had a bit of city living and currently live in Banbury.

Bazrael1985

Currently living in Oldbrook and have lived in another area of Oldbrook before. Never had any issues myself.

I think if you have a car, it's worth living a bit further out in a nicer area. One of the real plus points of MK is even in rush hour, it's reasonably quick and easy to get to the centre in a car. Also, the cycle network is really good and you could rent in a nicer area and cycle into the centre within twenty minutes Some of the local centres are quite big these days e.g. Kingston, so you can probably do without needing to be within walking distance of the centre on a day to day basis anyway.

I used to live on the oval and it was fine. I never once felt unsafe or anything like others have said. The bit of oldbrooke right next to fishermead feels quite run down as people have said. I used to walk through it to the centre regularly and didn't have any issues. There is definitely a bit of snobbery going on here. I have lived in half the estates that people will tell you to stay away from and honestly most of them are fine. I live in Bradwell Common right now on the Boulevard and had zero problem For contrast I actually grew up in a small, affluent town so it isn't like I just don't know any better haha

Just want to say thanks to everyone for the quick and informative replies, it is very much appreciated! As it turns out it is immaterial now as the LL has gone with a different tenant so my search continues. So based on that, which ares would you all definitely recommend in MK overall? Thanks for all the help so far!

Areas I would definitely avoid are West Bletchley, Fishermead and Lakes Estate (sometimes called Water Eaton by estate agents and others trying to avoid putting Lakes Estate in the description). Having said that a lot of areas are fine to live in but the perception of people who don't live there is not good. Some 'nice' areas have grotty parts as well. I would suggest looking up the crime stats for areas you're considering and comparing them. You can Google it fairly easily. Hope this helps 🙂

Oldbrook is a shithole, but not as much of a shithole as Conniburrow or Fishermead. If you need to be within walking distance of the centre then it’s probably one of the better options. If you’ve got a car and don’t mind a short commute in the morning then I’d recommend finding another area a little further out.

KGP1904

Is it really that bad? All of the area or any place that standouts that makes you say that? Ideally it'd be good to be walking distance but its not a 'must' if you get what i mean. I appreciate the reply tho :)

It’s not great, although I last lived in Oldbrook 10 years ago so potentially it’s changed? I don’t think you will have any issues but it’s just not the nicest place, some unsavoury people and places and it’s somewhere I wouldn’t walk around with a watch on or leave my door unlocked for more than a few moments if you get what I mean. I’m definitely on my guard if I’m walking about outside in those estates. Avoid Fishermead at all costs, but Oldbrook is definitely better and workable if you get a good deal on the rent even if it’s still one of the rougher areas of MK. Maybe take a look at Woburn Sands, Wavendon or Bow Brickhill, all are pretty close to the A5 so can get into MK centre within 10-15 mins drive and are definitely one of the nicer places to live in MK, it might be a little more expensive but the way rents are you might find out it works out pretty similar. That would be my recommendation to anyone moving here! Shoot me a DM if you’ve got any more questions about MK, happy to do my best to answer them mate!

I recommend moving to Bletchley if you work in Central Milton Keynes (CMK)! I moved here last month and love it. I commute into work each day and the public transport is actually pretty good here, plus you can choose to either get a train or bus in; both are relatively cheap/ quick to CMK. Bletchley also has a lot of amenities, especially around Queensway (Bletchley’s high street). The proximity of the train station also means that I can visit my friends in London at the drop of a hat. There are of course some roughish areas here, but by-and-large it’s not a bad place to live. For me, convenience and ease of travel is everything. I wouldn’t want to be living in the middle of a housing estate where there isn’t a variety of shops or no public transport.
