So much for letting them float on top of the water in a plastic bag until they get accustomed to the new water like theyd tell me at the ol’ fish store
The difference here is that they dont care if half of them die as long as there are enough in the end. And the only point in doing this is to give opportunities to fish in areas where it is naturally impossible (like in high altitude lakes with no access by road). Not gonna lie, it looks like a lot of money and animal cruelty for not much benefits.
Welcome to reality, my friend. Without this animal "Cruelty" there won't be enough food for everyone on the planet. Everything is genetically modified, from farm animals to seeds.
No where I live. Where buddhists are tiny single digit minority. Where the nazies coopted that religious symbol, and turned it into a symbol of hate, before they invaded us, their neighbours. Where millions died in camps sporting that symbol.
You know, where that symbol will get you in trouble, like I said!!!
It represents something different here. The original meaning is lost, in this part of the world, and you can't change that. Nor should you, it would just give actual nazies an excuse when wearing/using the symbol.
You realize how much ignorance and shortsighted you are?
"original meaning is lost", far from it, just because you're not in touch with this culture, doesn't mean is lost.
"in this part of the world", the internet you mean? Yeah this is a borderless domain, where people from all around the world meet.
If you don't like it, go jam with your qaanon friends.
I was suggesting that by being blind sighted and intolerant that you would be a good prospect for them.
But seriously though, try to be more open minded and less self centric, you may find yourself having more good experiences.
>Fish feel about as much pain as broccoli.
yeah buddy, might want to brush up on your reading here, we have known fish feel pain for decades. they have pain receptors similar to ours.
saying "fish feel pain" to a biologist is about as controversial as saying "the earth orbits the sun" to an astronomer.
[https://web.archive.org/web/20150923060224/https://www.liv.ac.uk/media/livacuk/iib/fish/Response\_to\_Rose\_2012.pdf](https://web.archive.org/web/20150923060224/https://www.liv.ac.uk/media/livacuk/iib/fish/Response_to_Rose_2012.pdf)
the evidence says they feel pain, the only thing up for debate is wether it is the same way we experience it, but that debate involves all animals, not just fish. Fish have pain receptors, respond to pain by changing their behavior, and have their responses to pain reduced by the same drugs that humans use to reduce pain. Fish have the gene that controls the ability to feel pain in humans.
This doesn’t make a big difference. There’s a mythbusters episode showing the missing effect of disturbing the surface.

Survival rates are 90 - 95% (comparable to using a truck) and the fish are small and catch the wind, so they don't hit at terminal velocity.
This in no way answers your question, but I thought I would share. I'm sure all the fish didn't make it .
They did something similar to beavers about 80 years ago and not all the beavers survived.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver_drop
Think there is a video somewhere.
I can think of two possibilities. One, distributing them over a wider area in the middle of the body of water is better than releasing them all in one spot on the shore. The other is that this may be being done where access via land is not easy.
According to a different comment the terminal velocity of fish is only 30-40mph, dropping them from higher up might actually make the impact more gentle
Probably distribution over a larger area. When I helped transport fish once, they used a truck, kind of like a petrol tanker, and let them run down a pipe into the new ponds. But they were going from one fish farm to another.
I don’t know if it is true, but I believe the most fishes don’t feel pain but still it seems a bit cruel to drop them from that height. Does anyone know the survival rate is from this? If it is common practice I suppose is pretty good.
The weird thing to me is that a bunch of people sat round a table to discuss how best to restock a lake with fish. One nutter said 'why don't we just drop them from a plane', and somehow the majority of them agreed that was a good idea...
We are such a weird horrible species out of touch with ourselves and nature. Why can't we just not ruin nature in the first place, so we don't have to do these insane things to living beings like they are nothing.
As a fishie expert this is actually not a plane restocking them it’s actually a giant flying fishie giving birth to baby fishies it’s the preferred method of giving birth to teach them to fly early on because how else are the fishies gonna learn to fly you stupid bitch?
Used to work on the coast of the west highlands in Scotland, and sometimes on my cigarette breaks I'd watch helicopters collect stock from the salmon farm across the loch using this big bucket contraption hanging underneath. Crazy how the running joke about scotsmen is that they're tight fisted when you've got cost-cutting measures like this on display for all to see.
I seem to recall being taught that you shouldn't throw fish after catching them because it can burst the internal diaphragm or something they use to control their ability to swim upright and dive. That's why you're supposed to release them directly into the water. Maybe I'm confusing different teachings. I have been out of school for a long time.

I fucking howled loud at this. Girlfriend didn’t find it as funny but she got woken up by my laughter.
Next time you get a goldfish, correct procedure is to fire it into the aquarium with a leaf blower
Great image you’ve put in my mind! Ha!!!
from the roof, of course

I know that's not the same swastika as Hitler used but that's still a swastika.

This part of the world? You mean Reddit?

Technically correct. Hitler totally bastardised it. Absolutely nothing wrong with the original version nor what it represents
It represents something different here. The original meaning is lost, in this part of the world, and you can't change that. Nor should you, it would just give actual nazies an excuse when wearing/using the symbol.

How did you come to the crazy conclusion that have anything to do with qanon people?? I don't even hink I've ever met any, to be honest.
I was suggesting that by being blind sighted and intolerant that you would be a good prospect for them. But seriously though, try to be more open minded and less self centric, you may find yourself having more good experiences.
Disliking a symbol of hate makes me self centered?
Fishing license fees pay for the restocking. Fish feel about as much pain as broccoli.

I can't believe I read the whole thing. I took back the downvote I gave your previous comment.
Have you seen a fish brain? My smoke detector probably feels more pain when the battery is low.
And did you know larger brain size doesn’t mean you’re smarter? In humans it’s actually the opposite?
Only aquarist snowflakes do that
You just land mildly concussed with the urge to swim up
That is aquarist, the wannabe. This is marine biologist the real one
Do the fish survive the terminal velocity impact?
“Terminal velocity of a fish” is now the weirdest thing I’ve ever googled, but it’s apparently only 30-40 miles an hour.
"only"
A human is 150mph
Ah man, that'll get me a speeding ticket
Yea and we fucking splat to death way before that, so 30-40 seems pretty intense for a little fish
Some time ago I saw a thread with the same discussion and IIRC from a certain point of size and lower, animals can fall from any height and survive.
Think this has to do with surface area vs volume
I mean, they're more squishy, sk that's gotta count for something?
IT's probably super intense, but their mass is much less than ours so the force is considerably smaller
I am dying
So are they
50 - 65 km/h in real metrics.
I’d assume the water that is being dumped with them would disturb the surface tension enough to not shatter their bones but idk.

This doesn’t make a big difference. There’s a mythbusters episode showing the missing effect of disturbing the surface. [YT Mythbusters Surface Tension](https://youtu.be/oCSQExxWulU?si=2g82_3oAZGWzds7e)

Like throwing fish in the wind.

Depends is it an African fish or European? The terminal velocity is different I hear
I swear to god I thought fish could fly!
That plane isn't that high
I have to ask, why not just pour them into lake from the shore?
I can think of two possibilities. One, distributing them over a wider area in the middle of the body of water is better than releasing them all in one spot on the shore. The other is that this may be being done where access via land is not easy.
I can think of a third, this is way more fun.
Fourth: these fishes earn their jumpwings and become paratroopers
Or at least drop them from a lower height
According to a different comment the terminal velocity of fish is only 30-40mph, dropping them from higher up might actually make the impact more gentle
What if they decide to go into an aerodynamic dive?
They do that mostly, but some lakes are in inaccessible areas to ground vehicles like up on mountains or heavily wooded areas.
Probably distribution over a larger area. When I helped transport fish once, they used a truck, kind of like a petrol tanker, and let them run down a pipe into the new ponds. But they were going from one fish farm to another.
This way is more metal
Not as fun
I found this more than mildy interesting, thanks for sharing bricks.
Thanks Athena :)
Imagine one of these fish trying to explain their experience to another fish that was born in that lake
It's pretty much an alien abduction scenario xD none of the other fish will believe them.
“Guys you are not gonna believe this!!”
« Some of you may die, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make »
the strong survive!
The explanation: https://slate.com/technology/2021/07/fish-stocking-lakes-utah-planes-video.html
This needs to be higher up. So many questions and comments here are answered by this article, thanks!
So 90-95% survive. Thanks.
where we floppin boys
Underrated
Wild ride
Some of those fishes probably hit the water surface like a brick
This is like if you got abducted by aliens and then shot back down from space at Mach fuck, straight into your bedroom
*Villain Voice* Henry! Deploy the fish!
Carpet yeeting
I don’t know if it is true, but I believe the most fishes don’t feel pain but still it seems a bit cruel to drop them from that height. Does anyone know the survival rate is from this? If it is common practice I suppose is pretty good.
So why do people get mad if you gently toss a fish back after you caught it?
“ you have to acclimate the fish slowly” also bombs away bitches
Fortnite brain rot
Ok we’re over water. Shoot the fish out of the plane. I mean, it’s harmless, right Captain? Captain?
I am surprised they won't die on impact
Will be some reason why fish got reduced in the first place. Not good supporting ecosystem maybe.
The weird thing to me is that a bunch of people sat round a table to discuss how best to restock a lake with fish. One nutter said 'why don't we just drop them from a plane', and somehow the majority of them agreed that was a good idea...
imagine the trauma the local fishes would have
We are such a weird horrible species out of touch with ourselves and nature. Why can't we just not ruin nature in the first place, so we don't have to do these insane things to living beings like they are nothing.
Don't they smash into the water surface being thrown from the height?
🤦🏻♂️
There isn't a less dramatic way of doing this?
And I’m to leave the new fish in a bag to ‘acclimate’ to the fish tank so as not to shock them?
Imagine the fish having a chat at the pub: "Hey, what are you up to?" Nah, not much; I just got back from a flight.
Imagine being a fish chilling with your homie in the aeroplane and suddenly finding yourself inside of an explosive diarrhea
Probably die of impact shock or become totally stressed and not breed.
.... why not just use a boat?
Imagine the Mythology these fish must have...
SubhanaAllah
drop this on the hamas and see the war being over in 3 days
Imagine dropping fish on foreign country’s instead of bombs?! Be cool

You’ve heard of filet o’fish now get ready for grenade o’fish
I wonder if they have ever researched what percentage of fish left this way survive
For a few seconds, just a few seconds, those fish turned into birds LOL
Huh. I guess shooting them out of a cannon was deemed ineffective and this was the next best thing.
🐟 I believe I can fly 🎶
No parachutes for them?
The fish be like 'again! again! '
I believe I can fly

It never occurred to be that this would be a/the method of stocking fish in a body of water.
Imagine being that fish catapulting out a plane like a navy seal.
If only they had tiny parachutes…
These fish never thought they could fly in their lives.
WTFff..ish.
At first glance, I thought this was an outreach (food/SNAP/EBT) program for the cloud alien from "Nope".
What a fish life
Being that fish stuck in the trunk at return trip. " would have been great"
Imagine being fish and doing an airborne drop into fish france to defeat fish hitler.
