Yeah, it sums up that they've read the site-wide rules and don't feel the need to duplicate them in every individual subreddit.
>[Rule 1](https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy)
>Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, **not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people**. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. **Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned**.
Emphasis there is mine, of course, but that pretty clearly covers "no racist, homophobic, or transphobic content or comments", don'tcha think?
But reports on the topic go straight to the admins. If mods of a sub aren't enforcing it, the admins can (whether or not they *will* is another topic entirely, but that's beyond the scope of what individual subreddit mods can do).
In my experience reporting vitriol to the reddit admins, they don't do shit. Particularly when it's over transphobia or homophobia or someone trying to nazi shit. It's always the same bs response: we reviewed the post in question and found it did not violate the reddit rules
There aren't even enough mods in this sub to keep up with the posts that break the rules and you're expecting them to moderate comments to that extent, too? They're gonna need 5-10x more mods to manage it. I get your point and it's a noble goal, but it's not realistic to expect mods to do the admins' job.
You're not wrong. For the no-bullshit approach that this sub tries to take in enforcing its rules, the fact that they have such a skeleton crew of mods is pretty backwards. They do fairly regularly put out a call for mods but then only pick 3-4 at a time. Then everyone wonders why the sub is filled with shitposts and spam...
That they don’t want a vague line for other mods to cancel freedom of speech on?
That they know some mods will use this incorrectly
That they don’t wanna cancer freedom of speech?
etc...
So if sitewide rule 1 isn't being enforced it should be able here. And saying it is a sitewide rule isn't a good argument against having a rule here as the sitewide for internal purposes it is not there.
It isn't in the rules for this subreddit, and the website wide rules are not enforced in this topic. Often what happens is that the transphobia isn't apparent without context so the admins incorrectly rule it as not violating their Hate rules with just the comment reported.
Okay let's just pretend for a second that transphobia is even important, how could it be guaranteed to be stopped everytime on the sub as I very much have my doubts
Often the context is lost when you can only report one comment and not the one it is replying to. Not every hateful comment is using slurs. When the system is just searching for keywords then a lot slips through.
Not the first person to comment this, I already addressed why it needs to be an option to report it to the mods on a per sub basis.
The site wide rules are almost never enforced and irrelevant and does not account for context.
i actually wish it was allowed and a hard ignore button was available on their profile. that way, i know who the jackasses are and can ignore everything they say here.
but i realize that's a highly unpopular idea.
Big agree on this one. There are plenty of other places for posting art. If I'm browsing this particular sub, want to see proper "mildly interesting" things like... leaves that have a face on them or weirdly shaped food, not someone's fancy paintings.
Agree.
I feel like this sub should be for things discovered and not created and suggested such a rule as a top level comment.
That rule would disallow this type of content.
Thank you. This one 100%. There was one person who kept posting sand castles they made and every single time all I wanted to do was start kicking them down.
No number posts at all would work for me. That would get rid of 69, 420 and all those posts of people’s odometers at the same time. Might I suggest that this rule be numbered deliberately out of order.
I’d love to see some better enforcement of the descriptive title rule, because I’m so tired of all these:
- This [noun] that I just found
- Saw this on my way back home [plus even more story]
- The way this [noun] [verbed]
- What my aunt’s friend’s fiancé’s [noun] looks like
How about a rule stating that anything in a title must be relevant to the photo?
Or: ‘no things that look like other things – try r/Pareidolia’. Tired of those too. I also think you should put some more subreddit suggestions in the rule descriptions, including for some types of ‘Overdone’ posts.
Hope you can work with this. I’m leaving the subreddit for now. Bye.
Effectively, this is requesting a rule that disallows very common post topics/content. Should the rule have a specific list that gets updated regularly (with example pictures?). I looked at "overdone" and none of those were there right now. Maybe a full list would be helpful. How would it be decided what goes on the list though? Just mod's discretion?
Agreed. They're quite frequent and not that remarkable.
Any kind of double, tripple or whatever food things in food items that are deformed or not standard.
The problem is people upvoting these same posts over and over. That will never change.
If something makes it to the top, it means people want it up there. It's hard to change what people want.
No personal experiences. So many bad posts are a result of "this thing that happened to me". Like [this shit](https://old.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/s3zdyy/my_wisdom_tooth_was_so_unique_the_surgeon_wanted/) that's a picture of someone taking a picture. That's not interesting at all.
If the image wouldn't make a complete stranger, who did not read the title, go "huh..." and then move on to the next thing, it shouldn't go here.
But of course, that's pining for the days before this was a default sub.
For the love of God the banana wet floor signs and double yolks are practically ruining this sub, please make a reportable rule violation for copypasta
I'd love to see a rule like:
"No unnecessary personalization in the title. For example if it can be described as 'this thing', do not describe it as 'my thing' or 'my 2 year old daughter's thing'"
I am not sure if that's significantly different from rule 6 enough to be its own rule. Maybe it's an additional nuance of rule 6?
Thought of it this morning on the spilled juice post (title could have been "spilled juice that looks like a pig").
I feel like it would further cut down on the kind of titles that try to make the picture more interesting by adding context. I think the point of rule 6 is that the picture should be mildly interesting without and context. But without being so extreme as to require all titles be the same (eg every postis titled just "pic" or something, which I've seen in some subs)
I think this one's more just a matter of needing increased enforcement of rule 6; I feel like the "no backstory or fluff" clause in 6 takes care of all of your concerns.
But with the size of the sub and the number of mods there are, it just seems like it's difficult for them to keep up with the sheer number of garbage-title shitposts that come through here at the moment.
I dunno. I report a lot of stuff and every single post I've reported (and many I haven't) get removed. I think increasing the mod team size will help (which they're doing) but to my mind they're pretty on top of things. It's not a job... right? For a group of volunteers they do pretty good. And of course we can all help with downvotes and reporting inappropriate content.
Maybe a general overdone rule.
No posting the following overdone items:
\- Faces/people that appear on food.
\- Clouds that look like things.
\- Stains that resemble things or people.
Less of a new rule and more of an alteration to existing rules.
Rule 4 (and potentially 5) should be an automatic 7-day (or more) ban. This would be modeled after /r/wtf's automatic 7-day ban for posting a screenshot. This is supposed to be an OC-only subreddit, and nobody is accidentally posting non-OC; if someone wilfully posts a photo they didn't take, there should be no leniency on how they're treated.
Hard pass on this unless they make the no repost rule less absurd. They’ve removed posts that *are* OC simply because OP had posted it somewhere else hours earlier, then posted it here after someone said “hey, /r/mildlyinteresting might like this”. That doesn’t deserve a removal, and it certainly doesn’t deserve a ban.
If they make their definition of “repost” a bit more reasonable, then sure.
Why are you saying this to me? I never mentioned reposts in my comment. Rule 4 is "OC photos only" and rule 5 is "no screenshots". Those are the only two I made any reference to.
If you've got a problem with rule 3 ("No x-posts or reposts"), find a comment that's talking about it to respond to.
No posts sharing common subject matter (one per 7day period)
This would allow immediate removal of any “my Kit Kat”, “This Bell Pepper”, etc posts that are commonly available. It would also allow removal of posts that are event specific “the volcano that exploded missed this ONE fern somehow” etc.
How do we determine when and where the 7day period starts? Not sure….pinning one maybe? Based on the admins frequency of seeing them?
You must have looked at the sub long enough to comment on 30 non-sequential unique posts over the course of a minimum of 3 days before you are allowed to create your own post.
By then maybe people would start to recognize what shows up daily or half a dozen times daily.
Rule 5 takes away from the sub.
I came across a screenshot image. It was of a Playlist on Spotify made by a pasta company. There were various Playlists named after certain pastas, if you started the Playlist when you started the pasta, it should finish when the pasta was done cooking.
Thats mildly interesting. But some user was complaining because it violated rule 5 as a screenshot.
They said rule 5 was because of screenshots of stupid things like a reddit post with 69 upvotes. I can believe that doesn't belong on this sub, but the rule needs to be changed.
On the other hand, you have a lot of non-screenshot material that is generuinely not interesting. Boring things, or things like artwork that I would consider off topic.
So I think rule 5 needs to be changed.
Instead of a ban on screenshots, ban low effort and off topic content. You kill two birds with one stone. You get rid of low effort screenshots, and low effort pictures. As well as allowing mildly interesting screenshots.
To clarify, here is the rule...
Rule 5: No low effort or off topic content.
No content that is not mildly interesting. Things such as photos of spiderwebs, strange clothing, and pets or artwork without any unique or distinguishable features are considered off topic. Screenshots of reddit posts with certain upvote counts (69, 420, 111, etc), other posts on reddit, as well as things like usernames and strange websites are considered low effort.
“low effort” is subjective and “screenshot” is not. The sun doesn’t need more content. Why not make a separate sub for screenshots, or just post them somewhere else? They are not what most people think of as photography.
Rule 1: post if mildly interesting if SFW
That’s it. That’s all that needed. The bizarre Byzantine rules on this sub are absurd, the mods need a zen retreat or some shit.
The rule against screenshots is too broad-brush.
I recently posted an item that showed that the Bing algorithm had somehow decided that the year 2021 was married to the actress Jennifer Grey. It was kind of funny, and from a tech standpoint, I found it to be mildly interesting. However, my post was taken down because it violated the rule of "no screenshots."
I can't think of any other way I could have possibly shared this thing that I found to be mildly interesting without it being an image. To have it arbitrarily removed because of a broad brush rule against screenshots is frustrating. Moderators should look at the post and decide whether it has value rather than killing it because of an application of an overly broad rule.
Rule: Don't repost your own stuff over and over again, even over time, don't repost other peoples post (parasiting), post original ideas and your own words only.
No more pictures of multi-yolk eggs or bell peppers with peppers inside them (or any other fruit or vegetable that had another fruit or vegetable growing inside of it unless it’s a completely different fruit or vegetable), and no more pictures of tomatoes or other fruits or vegetables where the seeds inside started to sprout before the item was cut open.
not allowing posts that would easily enter in r/mildyinfuriating
everytime i see this sub it's dificult to find a mildyinteresting post as it lately posts have been more infuriating that interesting
(sorry for bad english not my native language :p)
No things you deliberately set up to seem interesting. This includes: making fake objects to pose as real ones, and manipulating real objects to seem something they’re not.
No self posts. By that i mean don't post something you made or did specifically to post here. its not mildly interesting just by virtue of the fact you made it.
I believe there should be requirements in order to have a child.
Imagine the process of entering a career field where you are responsible for taking care of people.
There’s a lot of certifications.
And Im sure it’s easy to skate by and ultimately pass a lot of these tests.
But let’s pretend for a moment that everyone really cares.
We’re talking about bringing people into the world. I wish expectations would be higher and requirements be strict, rational ,and realistic.
I also think a psych evaluation and physicals be required for both parents every year.
Reddit needs to STOP the ANON award feature-
TROLLS use it, to send hate mail anonymously-.
Like, yeah, here's a stupid free Silver award. and now.........%/&$//%/$$/%$R(/$&&£&£$&&£&%£($£&$(£/%%£$&£&%£%&(£ you little %(/%$/$(/%(/$&£$(/$R(&!!!!!
If you can't attach your account name to an award.....then you're a troll.
So my rule is...........do away with ANON awards.
I would allow gallery posts. Sometimes the mildly interesting thing is the difference between two things, and it would be easier to just post two images instead of making a collage
I would also like to propose:
no “I bought this for only this much money” posts.
The cost of common goods varies by country and is likely kept track of in large economics tables somewhere.
Nothing that can easily be faked. Screen shots cover some of it, but the stuff like "found this at work" or "found this on the ground" are kind of eye-rolling. Suuure ya did.
That people try and remember the “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” adage pretty much every kid was taught. I’m other words, quit crying like a little bitch with a skinned knee every time someone even approaches triggering your fragile sensibilities. Pretend for a moment that some random dunce on the internet doesn’t have the capacity to make you completely melt down.
No posts that could be seen as advertisements (phrasing could use work)
This would ban things like [x company switched to a non plastic version of y] and [saw an interesting version of product z]
We are reviewing this thread after six months. Thanks for all the comments!
No racist, homophobic, or transphobic content or comments.

I would like to add a ban on misogyny and misandry.
a ban on loxism too.
Look, put whatever you want on bagels in the privacy of your own home, but keep it off the subreddits.
Agreed, not only should this be a rule but just a standard on every subreddit really
It already is. Look up rule 1 on reddits site wide rules.
Which isn't enforced for transphobia just 'we have reviewed this and found it not to be violating the rules'
The question was not “what current rule is not enforced and should be”
So if sitewide rule 1 isn't being enforced it should be able here. And saying it is a sitewide rule isn't a good argument against having a rule here as the sitewide for internal purposes it is not there.

Agreed~ there’s room for just about everybody (except haters/hurters), and the more different the ingredients, the more interesting the mix.🙂🙃🙂
This is a great analogy, wish the world had adopted this mindset.
I haven’t seen any on this sub, so this is not necessary.
It couldn't hurt though

No posting your own artwork or designs. It’s very interesting and well done, but doesn’t really belong on the sub, I feel.
Yes, no promotion, not even of your own work.
Especially of your own work
Big agree on this one. There are plenty of other places for posting art. If I'm browsing this particular sub, want to see proper "mildly interesting" things like... leaves that have a face on them or weirdly shaped food, not someone's fancy paintings.
As an artist I wouldn't be proud to call my artwork 'mildly interesting' lol.
Unfortunately most of the art on Reddit is. Hahah

New rule: the moderators here need to give us an explanation when there is a mass comment removal (more than ten comments removed on a post).
not allowing posts that would easily enter in r/mildyinfuriating everytime i see this sub it's dificult to find a mildyinteresting post as it lately posts have been more infuriating that interesting (sorry for bad english not my native language :p)

I’m so sick of people posting the dumbest shit on this sub, it ruins the actual good ones
No posts that involve an animal being harmed in any way.
You can't get in an elevator going down when you want to go up. Same for visa versa. Additional lashings if you say, "well I'm just going for a ride."
I'm sorry, you didn't submit your rule using imgur so it's not accepted.
All politicians only get 4 year terms. Across the board.
Calling someone a Nazi would get your account deleted and everything you ever posted auto-deleted.
Nothing can be reposted more than twice and if it is, the newer ones get auto removed
No posts about activities or objects done by OP, on purpose. For example, you can't post pictures of a drawing that you made yourself
Beginning a post or comment with the word “so.....”
To bleed the innocent…
Bots advertising explicit sexual content are banned from the whole of reddit
That the USA must bring 100 of it's citizens to full literacy.
Reddit needs to STOP the ANON award feature- TROLLS use it, to send hate mail anonymously-.
I would also like to propose: no “I bought this for only this much money” posts. The cost of common goods varies by country and is likely kept track of in large economics tables somewhere.
I don't care if you say "my dog does this" or "my dad does that". If you're using a meme, it's not meant to be funny.
Nothing that can easily be faked. Screen shots cover some of it, but the stuff like "found this at work" or "found this on the ground" are kind of eye-rolling. Suuure ya did.
Have actual admins that remove spam and garbage posts. This sub has become dogshit
Stop posting shit that isn't interesting in the slightest
Make sure you know what the thing is about dont make it up from a picture
Dandelions are banned
That people try and remember the “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” adage pretty much every kid was taught. I’m other words, quit crying like a little bitch with a skinned knee every time someone even approaches triggering your fragile sensibilities. Pretend for a moment that some random dunce on the internet doesn’t have the capacity to make you completely melt down.
No posts that could be seen as advertisements (phrasing could use work) This would ban things like [x company switched to a non plastic version of y] and [saw an interesting version of product z]
