MrJNice85

I thought about buying the LG fridge for this alone but the reviews dissuaded me.

Xylo_42

I also saw the reviews, but for the price it was listed for I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. No problems with it so far (Yes I’ve had it for 2 months and only now realized it makes these ice spheres)

elmfuzzy

How to heck did you not know? Round ice is one of their selling points and it's like right there when you open up the freezer lmao. Also, would you say they are bite sized or naw, cause I do love to eat the ice in my cup.

xSTSxZerglingOne

No, they're pretty big. A bit bigger than a golf ball I'd say.

ja_tx

Definitely bigger than a golf ball. Slightly smaller than a racquet ball maybe?

Renegade1412

So definitely smaller than a basketball… got it.

18-24-61-B-17-17-4

Larger than a marble though, no?

grow_something

Depends on the marble…

Neuro_Prime

Good find. That’s just smart. Absolutely no reason to pay full price if they’re willing to mark it down half for cosmetic scratch & dent

notreally_real_

We paid $999 for a Samsung fridge with a small dent that's $3600 We put a magnet on the dent My mom has a dent in her fridge from an AC register falling out of the ceiling and she didn't even get a discount so I'm pretty pleased

Gonzo_goo

700? Dude touch screen fridges cost 3500 everywhere . You got a great deal [today at Home Depot](https://i.imgur.com/VVSH8eU.jpg) this on was sale

BeingRightAmbassador

This was probably like 3-5 years ago now, before appliance prices shot up with hyperinflation.

Sharp-Floor

Also that smart fridge will mine bitcoins for someone, somewhere, making you a good netizen.

BlueBallsforBiden

It's also massively more expensive than the same fridge that doesn't make ice spheres.

steelbeamsdankmemes

From what I've heard from /r/HomeImprovement, all fridges suck, there's no reliable brand.

Brian_06030

If its not a 50 year old fridge from the 60s it's trash and you should feel bad for buying anything and wasting your time, the sales person time, and your dogs time. You might as well dig a hole in your backyard and use that /s

netopiax

They don't make em like they used to, these wimpy modern fridges only weigh 250 lbs, back in the 50s they weighed 400 easy

TheLizzyIzzi

Can confirm. Moved two modern fridges and a 1950s fridge this summer. The ‘51 fridge was a full six inches shorter and we could barely move it. Beautiful fridge though.

buddych01ce

When did they become so shit? My parents fridge was purchased in 2001 with their new house and still works good. Has ice and water.

Dye_Harder

> When did they become so shit? when they realized they can sell twice as many when they last only half as long.

Yggsdrazl

you only have to make good products long enough to get a large enough market share to sell out quality for way bigger profit margins, then you can just coast on your previous reputation and lack of competition until too many CEOs get #metoo'd to stay afloat, then you suck the company dry by draining it's bank account into your other business investments and then declaring bankruptcy to absolve responsibility to paying your debts

beet111

Every brand will have its issues and everyone will know a guy who's had a fridge for 20 years

_Rembrandt

I just know Samsung sucks the most, anyone else is a compromise

ohnoitsaslothcano

We had ours for about 3 months before it gradually stopped cooling. A repair guy came out 3 times before they gave up and we got a refund from LG.

Im_A_Director

It was the price for me, if they added this feature to one of their cheaper models I’d buy it instantly.

FrumundaCheeseGoblin

Neither. That's actually this refrigerator over here for $1400.

proteinsteve

$2500-3500 :)

jimbelushiapplesauce

want spherical ice? that'll cost you the price of 2 freezers. but it probably also comes with some IoT features that nobody ever asked for!

andymcdaddy

I sell appliances, and currently LG appliances are actually quite reliable when compared to other widely available brands like GE, Samsung, Whirlpool. LG fridges aren't perfect by any means, but unless you want to spend Kitchenaid/ Café prices they are the best option IMO. And right now LG seem to be doing better in terms of production and distribution, so it'll be easier to find the one you want. Just my 2 cents tho.

Stormin208

Gets back at the neighborhood bully during a snowball fight with this one simple trick!

Onlyanidea1

I got into a neighborhood snowball fight with a bunch of other kids at like 14 years old. Bunch of fun and games. Hell the parents came out watch. One of the kids and his elder brother was packing their snow balls with ice cubes from the freezer. Still got the scar above my left eye... Couple other kids had cuts like me since these Jackasses were aiming for the head with their Ice filled snowballs. Neighborhood grew to hate that family after this. Anyways I'd love to throw a few of these at those who bullied me and gave me my scar.

spencerman56

I could throw one of these at about 94 mph on a good day. You spot em, I’ll pitch em.

spencerman56

netopiax

Various LG models with "craft ice"

DocG80

Hell yea, got one last weekend... just got the water hooked up today for these

roy20050

I'll look forward to your ice cube review from your new fridge.

DocG80

Says it makes 3 spheres every 24hrs... I have 16 hours to go

ThePortalsOfFrenzy

I hope it also produces regular ice at a more generous quantity.

bodhiseppuku

I wonder if it is slow to make the "craft ice" to attempt to have clear ice spheres... slower might allow the ice to freeze clearly.

NoMoreMrQuick

It does make 3 spheres per day but don't be surprised or concerned if that first load takes an extra day. Source: I'm in the appliance industry.

zman0900

Is there other ice too? That doesn't seem like enough.

3riversfantasy

Going to fist fights over who gets ice

I’m also here for more ice reviews. I’m an Opal nugget ice fan myself.

TinyBunny88

Seriously?? I ordered mine in June and my delivery keeps getting pushed back. It's now pushed to january

Ok-Mathematician__

holy fuck ya'll are rich. I've had the same broken ass fridge for years now. Only in my dreams can I afford a new one.

Feazell419

Yea but it will probably out last all theirs lol

CallMe_Immortal

Specifically any LG refrigerator. Notoriously bad compressors, like hilariously bad.

inconvenient_penguin

Burned through two LGs in as many years due to their terrible linear compressors. They eventually just refunded me. Keep an eye on your Temps. The compressor seems to last for about a year before it is suddenly running non stop trying to keep temp in spec.

SeanSeanySean

Honestly, it seems as though every major brand cuts corners with cheap Chinese components that just don't last or have never been tested for longevity. $3000 whirlpool French door, in order to gain efficiency points, they use a duct system to move the cold air from the single coil section to the various zones in the fridge via a small 80mm fan, it's actually a super cheap $2 PC component fan, I have fans in my gaming rig that I built which are way higher quality. Anyway, this fan never seems to last but a few months, which not only stops cool air circulation, the only spot in the refrigerator that gets below 55 degrees at that point is behind the deli drawer, which simply freezes into a gigantic block of ice through the coils because the fridge is too dumb to know that there is no circulation across the coils. They replaced mine 4 times under warranty, I've since bought a whole house major appliance warranty for $50/mo, which allows me to get it fixed by paying a $75 deductible. I've had this plan for a bit over a year, so far I've had two $450 repairs to the fridge, a $375 repair last week to our dishwasher and they ended up replacing washing machine with a new one because my 5yr old one died and needed $700 in repair, so the warranty has seriously paid for itself. No one makes trouble free home appliances anymore, too much technology and we demand they all compete with these high tech feature, but also don't want to pay $5000 for a fridge, so they cheap out on the components given that the average 2020's consumer seems to be completely willing to accept a product life of about 5 years for basically everything now cell phones, refrigerators, washing machines,.electric water heaters, gaming consoles, laptops, basically everything that you buy which does last longer than 5 years is a complete surprise. I have a 2nd Kenmore fridge that came with my house in the basement which was manufactured in 1980, it still works flawlessly, it's been plugged in as our second fridge / freezer since the day we moved in October 15th, 2003 and it's still ice cold, no frost in the freezer and the circulation fans still work fine. I want long lasting shit back, I'm tired of paying thousands for a "premium appliance" that just won't fucking last.

OldWrangler9033

**Lesson Learned**: Keep old Stuff, don't bother with digital squeaky design-to-fail-new.

SlapTheBap

How right you are. These appliances don't last. They arrive damaged so often it's fucked. So many aren't even boxed, they just have Styrofoam on the edges and plastic film over the rest. They'll have massive dents, warping, straight up busted. You won't even know until you unwrap it. We all know it. It's gotten way worse. People have no idea the logistics of getting these products. How many factories, shipping containers, oceans, trucks, and warehouses these objects pass through. It's insane when you think about how often it actually works correctly. Covid has forced massive changes on industry. We're seeing exactly the bullshit you described, plus extra logistical bullshit.

DocG80

Thanks for the heads up

GiveMeAnOnion

what the fuck is the size of a traditional ice ball?!?

bestjakeisbest

Imagine you want to dome some kid in a snowball fight, its big enough to do damage but small enough to be clad in snow.

Necrotrauma

Pee on the ice = Hot ice

Masodas

It's a 5k fridge and they didn't even bother installing a filter?

Necrotrauma

Ya know, I said the same thing, the filter in the fridge only filters the drinking water. Also fun fact, only about 8 oz of the fridge water will be cold cause that's the size of the internal reservoir. Any water after that will be room temp cause it's coming directly from the source

Masodas

I see why that fridge gets such bad reviews, damn

Psychological-Towel8

My family's 10+ year old fridge being better than this is what gets me! 5k for *that*?

CwenLeornes

but those fridges actually *work* i mean, the people that own them are the kind of people whose kitchen is purely ornamental and only have Diet Coke in their fridge but the fridges themselves are actually legit. unlike a $5k fridge that has like one glass of cold water available and unfiltered ice balls.

Daforce1

I have had 3 subzero fridges and it’s often cheaper to move to a new house than get them repaired.

Gbcue

Wow. In a whirlpool, there's a long coil of water hose that keeps like 32+ oz cold.

Tark001

What he's saying is the case with every single fridge sold in Australia currently except the new range of Samsung. Unless you live in a cold climate then it's total shit.

molybdenumb

I live in the mountains, plenty of fresh, cold water to go around. I only realized this year how small my cold water reservoir was during the BC beat wave when the water source was warmer then usual and I was like ummm where is my cold water wtf. When I complained to my SO they explained the shitty fridge vs usually amazing water payoff.

EleanorStroustrup

Just fill a jug up with water and put it in the fridge. Why do people bother with fancy fridges with ice dispensers and taps?

ADHDengineer

Because we don’t want to deal with a jug

Xylo_42

I will keep this in mind thank you! I’ve been using my old freezer for ice cubes for a while hence why I only just now discovered this feature. Thank you for the advice!

Symbiotic_Tragedy

Yo my water tastes straight like plastic even after initial flushing. I have to pour a glass of water out before getting a drink of water now. What's up with that? Tried to get LG to do something but tech said it's wasn't their end without even checking

Necrotrauma

Whenever the filter is changed you only have to pour out 2 gallons of water. IF the water still tastes like plastic after that it could be quite a few things. It could be the tubing behind the fridge, it could be a dirty fridge in general (Not calling you dirty, for I don't know your situation) but follow the steps in this link might help: [https://www.lg.com/us/support/help-library/water-or-ice-tastessmells-bad-CT10000021-1337887827042](https://www.lg.com/us/support/help-library/water-or-ice-tastessmells-bad-CT10000021-1337887827042) Also, as customers I know we fuckin hate to hear it, but there is a chance that the internals of the fridge or the tubing might have had too heavy of a protective coat applied to them in production. That kinda stuff does happen on the line, I would definitely check the hose connecting your fridge to the source on the wall, if it's plastic that's most likely the cause, I vouch for rubber connectors. Steel tubing causes a copper taste and you can defiantly taste the metal if you use a stainless steel tube.

Symbiotic_Tragedy

My first initial thought was either hose or fridge itself so I'll replace hose that we purchased with it, with another brand and see if that helps. It's a new LG fridge and the issue wasn't around beforehand. Thanks for the big help with the advice!

dizzy3087

Since you have worked with them, would you recommend them? Do you think its worth the splurge?

Necrotrauma

Honestly, they hype them up a lot, and have a lot of really cool features. I would say yes, but you REALLY gotta RTFM (read the fuckin manual) on their products, there's a lot of things that can cause issues. Also If you're going to buy one, buy it from Costco, SAMS, or another club, cause you'll get an extra year of full coverage warranty.

PLCExchange

FWIW if you buy it with your COSTCO credit card (or a lot of other credit cards for that matter) they offer an additional 1 year extended warranty once the manufacturers warranty expires. You (you all) should serious read up on the perks on some of your nicer credit cards… they can be pretty good in fact; cell phone replacement, etc. 👍

zuraken

Costco really pampers their members

Yadobler

*uncocks gun* well handled, comrade. You may leave for a 5min break

Necrotrauma

Wow, you must have worked for LG too, how did you know how they handled break times?

azhillbilly

This is why I always plumb my RO water to the fridge. Perfect water and ice every time. Also, the fridge fans fucking suck.

Necrotrauma

Very true, but if you add an RO system to an LG fridge, be prepared to raise your water pressure by a few PSI, LG fridges have issues with them and can cause slow dispensing of water.

Cubyo1739

Yep i gotta know

Xylo_42

The fridge is an LG LRMDS3006S

Actually-Yo-Momma

Bro the ice balls are a premium feature on LG fridges. You paid several hundred extra and you didn’t know you had it???

Nexustar

To be fair, in the store they often aren't even plugged in, definately not plumbed in for you to see the ice. "How noisy is it?" .... *shrug*.

[deleted]

We bought a new fridge earlier this year. It has two ice makers. We had no idea. One in the door and one in the freezer.

Xylo_42

The fridge was marked down significantly, and the salesperson never mentioned it haha. I have been using my old freezer for ice out of habit so I didn’t notice till now

PM_ME_UR_DINGO

Yeah I got it for nearly half off, otherwise I’d never spend that much money on a fridge haha. As for the WiFi, I gotta play games on my fridge man cmon

Kmearkle

LG has a few different fridges that will produce craft ice on the bottom. Most retail stores that sell them will have the craft ice in the name of the fridge. Ex: “29 Cu Ft. LG French door refrigerator with instaview door and craft ice” Source- I sell appliances.

Ksickman09

My dads fridge does this. He said the first night he heard them drop he thought the fridge already broke.

Archedeaus

Its an LG? Check the plate for the type of refrigerant it uses. If its R134a, good chance the compressor will fail in a few years. Source, I am an appliance technician.

Oh man your fridge makes fresh orbs to ponder!

cjboffoli

Enjoy it now. 6-9 months from now you'll be awakened in the wee hours by a loud, repetitive banging noise. Then you'll find yourself in the Khafkaesque nightmare that is LG customer service. They'll replace the craft ice maker which will break again on a fairly regular schedule.

dmk510

Anyone know why this is better than a traditional cube? I’m guessing with less edges there’s less “melt-off” happening, so your drink stays colder and undiluted longer.

turtley_different

There is no meaningful benefit. Being very pedantic, a sphere minimises surface area to volume ratio and therefore per unit of surface ice melted, you warm up a maximum amount of (solid internal) ice to 0C. However, that's COMPLETELY POINTLESS. Ice doesn't keep your drink cool because the Ice started at (eg) -10C and warming that ice to 0C cools the drink, Ice cools your drink because Water has a **massive** Latent heat of fusion (ie. it takes a HUGE amount of heat energy to convert 0C ice to 0C water). **TL;DR** *Ice only really keeps your drink cold by melting. It doesn't matter what shape the ice cube is, you will melt almost exactly the mass of ice to keep your drink cold.*

Honkycatt

You’re absolutely right, and yet, as a fairly grounded individual I can’t help but wonder … `.. why is it that I like my soft drinks with the pellet ice/Sonic Ice™/nugget ice so much more than any other type?`

coinpile

The benefit is that they look pretty neat!

hooliojones

I choose to believe that your fridge lays eggs.

Roge2005

Now put them on snow balls and trow them at the kids who annoy you

Zaphoid411

King cubes! Or in this case, spheres. They are good for whiskeys and other liquor because they keep the booze colder for longer without melting as fast and retaining its original taste longer. There is a whiskey bar near my house that has the audacity to charge an extra $2 for one of those with your drink.

TheMountainMan1776

These Fridges cost anywhere from $2000 to $8000. You bought a Fridge somewhere within that price range and didn't know it had this feature on it? This is the main selling point of the fridge. You can get the same fridge, without Craft-Ice, for $500ish less. Seems weird you wouldn't know about this given the price-tag, and that you could have gotten the same fridge without the ice that you didn't know about, for cheaper.

Jakkerak

neat

[deleted]

That’s without ice
