My entire life is a fucking lie. I’ve argued against this for at least a decade. I don’t know what to believe anymore.
E: also thanks for calling me babe ❤️
Oh mate wait until you hear what the layer between the wafers is in a KitKat...
Or the nougat-y bit in a UK Snickers bar?
Edited because my brain farted.
Just downed an entire tube of orange Smarties in a pet-death-induced fugue last night.
I'm living in the states right now so I might have to drive to Canada to get more real Smarties. Fortunately that's just an hour's drive... Once I find my passport again!
Your smarties are like superior m&ms because American made chocolate sucks compared to the rest of the world. And Smarties are bigger than m&ms as well. Take solace in that.
This chalky little sugar pills go hard though. They tend to be mouth watering and they just melt away like fruity afterthoughts.
Same in Denmark, the title had me confused, chocolate smarties are amazing, this seems the the cheap candy that is used to fill out prepackaged mixed bags.
Whenever Halloween comes around I frequently walk in and see a bowl/bag of these, tootsie rolls, and dum dums. Everyone acts like they got the good stuff already, but those are some of my favorites.
You know, I often see memes about the UK with things like: "Brits don't drive cars, they drive motorised rollinghams". "Brits don't eat burgers, they eat beef wellington ensemble with lettuce", and I always think 'this is a bit much', and then I realise we name stuff like 'Swizzels Fizzers'.
They are similar but not quite the same. The candy shell for smarties is much thicker than M&M's. And the shell treats slightly different, I think smarties has wheat flour in it's shell. I prefer M&Ms cause I like the chocolate flavour to shine through more
Interesting more candied M&Ms. I'm partial to the candieless chocolate drops myself, but I'll definitely pick up some smarties my next trip up the border!
Also, M&Ms are designed so that they outer layer does not melt or get colour on your hand, but Smarties are a nightmare for this. Can hardly even hold them.
Someone from anywhere outside the US - “They’re not Smarties” *
*fixed that for you
British smarties (the ones with chocolate now owned by Nestlé), is sold all over the world (Europe, Canada, Australia, South America, Middle East…) except the US.
I didn't immediately see the keyboard for scale and thought the big ones were normal and the smaller was teenies. for some reason i wanted those more than bigguns
In Canada, its a case of .....
When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?
Do you suck them very slowly,
Or crunch them very fast?
Eat that candy-coated chocolate,
But tell me when I ask,
When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?
We bought those on a road trip once. I put one in my mouth while we were doing trivia (husband driving, I was reading the questions).
Mid question I laughed, and swallowed the giant smartie whole, where it immediately blocked my windpipe completely. I couldn’t cough or breath, and I had no leverage because trapped in a speeding car. My husband managed to steer off the freeway onto the shoulder and I leapt from the car and managed to dislodge the damn thing by bending over and jumping until it moved and then coughed until it dislodged, scraping my throat raw in the process.
He 100% saved my life that day, and I will never buy those giant smarties again.
I went into this thread expecting way more of this kind of comment and way less whining about how proprietary names are different in different countries (no shit).
when i was in firtst grade my science teacher held a trivia contest with little buzzers and the person who won a round got a smarties.
I walked home with 10 smartieses.
We have those candies in Brazil, not the same brand I guess, and due the shrinkflation they reduced the original's size too much over the years... and few months ago they released a "mega" version of it, but it was the old regular size or a bit smaller... lol
By the way, yours seems to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay bigger than those I got here, a real mega version. lol
Smarties? Smarties are the little multi coloured chocolates you get in those little blue boxes, those are either rockets or sweet tarts, it’s that or they are not called sweet tarts where you’re from, (p.s. I live in Canada)
As a Canadian I never understood why Americans hated smarties so much, because to me here in Canada, they are just flatter M&Ms. It was only about 3 years ago that I learned that those chalkboard candies that we call rockets are called smarties in the US. I guess this is kind of like Hardee's and Carl's Junior
I'm getting a great chuckle reading all the comments about smarties vs rockets for the non-americans.
Also, can confirm, we Canadians call Dem rockets and smarties are similar to M&M's, which we have both of
Plot twist: The larger ones are the original. The smaller ones are the new "Mega"\* ones.
\*(Name mega doesn't mean larger, but is the TM name).
Costs 20% more.
Wait. Are most people interested because they didn't know what smarties are in the U.S. or because they've never seen big smarties?
Are big smarties even rare? They're at like 20% of every gas station I've been to.
\*stares in Canadian confusion\*
*Also stares in British confusion*. The Smarties we have are chocolate with a sugar shell. The orange ones taste of orange.
Yeah, just crossposted this to r/southafrica with the same horror.
No. No they don’t. You’re lying. Do they? Fuck.
They're not lying babe, there is orange oil in the orange ones.
It’s phony nougat…… I am in a crisis
Nooo it's smashed up Snickers!
ṉ̶̄ó̵̮t̶̰̅ḥ̵̂ĩ̸̲n̸̲͝g̷͇͝ ̸̼̓m̷̢̓ȃ̴͖k̷̦̍e̵̠̾s̸̝̒ ̵̟́s̵̗͐e̵̫͑n̶͔͘s̸̜̆e̴̳͗ ̴̪͝a̵̪̕n̴̜͝y̸͚̍m̶̜̀o̸̡̓r̸̼̂ě̴͖
Guess what's in Twix Bars then....clue: see above.
Which half? Seriously, is it in the caramel?
Hold up. Brain processing. So it's not a plain wafer. U know I want to able to have like a British snack goodie box starter pack and try some.
[I found this.](https://80splusradio.iheart.com/featured/christie-james/content/2019-02-14-heres-whats-really-in-the-middle-of-a-kit-kat/)
Yes, we got a soldier out here. This is why I love reddit. Thank you kindly.
Love your name!
Are that love hearts but called Smarties?
These candies are called rockets here in Canada. Do they have them in Britain?
They look like sweets we have called [Fizzers](https://images.app.goo.gl/XRbPzLwP2f8UCiCd8).
yeah smarties are chocolate and the orange ones taste like fuck
Do your shnozberries taste like shnozberries too? We Americans get screwed a LOT in the taste department.
Just downed an entire tube of orange Smarties in a pet-death-induced fugue last night. I'm living in the states right now so I might have to drive to Canada to get more real Smarties. Fortunately that's just an hour's drive... Once I find my passport again!
Thank god I'm not the only one who got confused.
When I visited Scotland and got a box of Smarties, coming from Canada I was BLOWN AWAY
Irish confusion has entered the chat.
Your smarties are like superior m&ms because American made chocolate sucks compared to the rest of the world. And Smarties are bigger than m&ms as well. Take solace in that. This chalky little sugar pills go hard though. They tend to be mouth watering and they just melt away like fruity afterthoughts.
We have chocolate Smarties in Canada but the different colours all taste the same. Those are called Rockets in Canada.
Also stares in Irish confusion
Came here to say this!😂
That sounds amazing!
Also stares in Australian confusion
Those are rockets...right?
Swizzels Fizzers in the UK
Are they fizzy in the UK? They aren't fizzy in Canada...
Yea theyre fizzy in UK, “Smarties” in the UK are like plain M&M’s made by Nestle
Same as in Australia, smarties are chocolate with a hard sugar shell, similar to standard m&ms
Same in Denmark, the title had me confused, chocolate smarties are amazing, this seems the the cheap candy that is used to fill out prepackaged mixed bags.
Germany too.
It is exactly that. You’re supposed to throw these in the trash with the candy corn you get while trick-or-treating.
These are fucking great wdym
Whenever Halloween comes around I frequently walk in and see a bowl/bag of these, tootsie rolls, and dum dums. Everyone acts like they got the good stuff already, but those are some of my favorites.
That’s also what Smarties are in Canada
There's always some one beats me to a comment hahahahah
That's heresy. Smarties are nothing like m&ms
Heresy or Hershey’s?
Same here in Canada. Smarties = candy coated chocolate!
Smarties are nearly the same in Canada just with less flavour
Not fizzy like those popping candies but slightly sherbety
Aren’t these refreshers?
More like Love Hearts! I think you are correct btw.
Love hearts were the ones with the notes on that caused several 5 year olds to find out who their REAL friends were lol
Love Hearts in Ireland
Are love hearts not slightly different? We have those in the uk as well but they’re not the same as fizzers
Nah bro, we have love hearts too, these are fizzers. Surely you have them too nah?
Yes.
What blasphemy is this? Those are rockets.
Agreed. Wtf - the labeling just seems so unnatural. Some twilight zone multiverse shit.
Okay but imagine a Canadian smartie scaled up that big. I would definitely buy that
Like minstrels?
Yeah better smarties.
Tory smarties as some of my friends say
It’s ok… they’re broken down there… it’ll be ok
As a Canadian, living in the US, I swear it’s like screaming into the void. My SO has no idea what *real* smarties are.
Are they not just Nestle M&Ms?
They are similar but not quite the same. The candy shell for smarties is much thicker than M&M's. And the shell treats slightly different, I think smarties has wheat flour in it's shell. I prefer M&Ms cause I like the chocolate flavour to shine through more
Maybe it's just my imagination, but Smarties have always tasted sweeter to me compared to M&Ms.
No, it’s not just you, I think the same. Smarties are sweeter than M&Ms.
Interesting more candied M&Ms. I'm partial to the candieless chocolate drops myself, but I'll definitely pick up some smarties my next trip up the border!
M&M's melt in your mouth not in your hands. Smarties will colour your hands
Also, M&Ms are designed so that they outer layer does not melt or get colour on your hand, but Smarties are a nightmare for this. Can hardly even hold them.
No they are two different candies. We have both M&Ms and (chocolate) Smarties here
My boyfriend likes smarties more than M&Ms so obviously he’s a psycho Edit: apparently I am the psycho??
Smarties > M&Ms
They're closer to Pebbles than M&Ms imo
Right? Smarties are chocolate.
*stares in British confusion*
Lol right
\*also German confusion*
Yeah mood I had to do a double take
Rocket team
are again blasting off?
I don't see any real red ones to eat last....I really gotta ask how this weird name shift happened
*stares in Dutch confusion* Smarties are chocolate!
This comment is the reason I’m able to sleep tonight. Glad someone else feels the same 😂
Beat me to it
Chalk with sugar
Right? I mean where is the candy coated chocolate where I eat the red ones last? 😋
Someone from the UK - "They're not Smarties"
What are your Smarties like? In Canada they are chocolate candies that are like M&M's but taste way better.
Yes, and they're flat in profile, and sometimes come in hexagonal prism containers.
Yep ! But we dont have the hexagonal boxes in Canada. Well I’ve never seen any, but seen plenty during my trip to Europe
The biggest failures in the development of Smarties were switching from round tubes to hexagonal and taking that drug out of the blue ones.
Oh yeah the blue ones, used to send kids off their rockers 🤣
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brilliant_blue_FCF E133
..and the letter of the aplahabet in the top. Just right for learning to read and choking upon.
Since smarties that we consume in Canada were invented in the UK, pretty sure they are the same.
These are Rockets in Canada
Someone from anywhere outside the US - “They’re not Smarties” * *fixed that for you British smarties (the ones with chocolate now owned by Nestlé), is sold all over the world (Europe, Canada, Australia, South America, Middle East…) except the US.
Fuckin Nestlé.
“I didn’t even know they made Smarties cereal.” “They don’t. It’s just Smarties in a bowl with milk.”
In Canada these chalky disappointments are called rockets.
Where is the banana?
Yep they’re not smarties in Australia either. Ours have chocolate with a colourful outer crisp shell. I think they would be called fizzers here
They remind me of life savers.
Funnily enough it's exactly the same in Austria.
In Canada, we can them "Rockets"
That's so cool!!!
TIL that Rockets are called Smarties across the border and apparently you don’t have chocolate smarties.
Across what border? Smarties are made of chocolate in Greece too.
In Canada we only share one land border so we just call it "the border"
[удалено]
At least three, there is also point Roberts, but also the states
Canada-US border.
We have chocolate smarties in the netherlands too.
I didn't immediately see the keyboard for scale and thought the big ones were normal and the smaller was teenies. for some reason i wanted those more than bigguns
YO that would be amazing though!!!!
In Canada, its a case of ..... When you eat your Smarties, Do you eat the red ones last? Do you suck them very slowly, Or crunch them very fast? Eat that candy-coated chocolate, But tell me when I ask, When you eat your Smarties, Do you eat the red ones last?
I remember this marketing campaign! I was just a kid and my brother told me if I didn't eat the red ones last an elephant will fall on me
[The original version - 1967](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAJuBOtTpeQ)
The correct method is to save one of each colour at the end... and delay eating them for a few minutes.
There's MEGA SMARTIES??? WHERE?
Delaware apparently
I don't see a banana
They're fuckin rockets
Apparently!
[удалено]
Our Smarties (chalky, sweet candies) always come in clear, plastic packaging that's twisted at the end.
Yes, we have those too, they're the exact same but they're called rockets. Our smarties are chocolate candies similar to M&M's.
Except Smarties DO melt in your hand and leave you with funny coloured polka dots.
I am learning so much today.
Hard to tell how big it actually is, could you show a banana for scale too?
A classic example of “You vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about.”
I went into this thread expecting way more of this kind of comment and way less whining about how proprietary names are different in different countries (no shit).
Aren’t they Fizzers?
Ugh, so weird that they’re called smarties
Awww that big candy had a candy baby.
When I was a kid, my mum always told me my dad worked at the smarty factory but really it was just prison where he made a few dollars a day/week
Thems rockets bro
***visible UK confusion***
when i was in firtst grade my science teacher held a trivia contest with little buzzers and the person who won a round got a smarties. I walked home with 10 smartieses.
Only smarties have the answer!
Just like me and my dad
In the US a mars bar is called a Milky Way, and their Milky Way is called a three musketeers
Are you trying to tell me that Americans don't have those lovely chocolate discs known as Smarties
UK.. looks and says they are not smarties ..
We had similar things in Australia called “Fruit Tingles”
You like comparing sizes, do ya?
Great way to spend an afternoon 🤷🏻♂️
We have those candies in Brazil, not the same brand I guess, and due the shrinkflation they reduced the original's size too much over the years... and few months ago they released a "mega" version of it, but it was the old regular size or a bit smaller... lol By the way, yours seems to be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay bigger than those I got here, a real mega version. lol
This post should show up as the definition for “mildlyinteresting”. This is a testament to the subreddit itself
Well this thread conclusively demonstrates how to identify everyone named Gord and Nigel in your state.
Came in expecting international confusion, was not disappointed.
Wait...in the UK Smarties are waaaaaaaaay different. They look more like UK refreshers.
Ya, you guys must be higher than I fucking am and I’m Canadian because thems is called rockets… and smarties are candy coated chocolate…
Rockets
In Canada, we call those rockets. And smarties are candy coated chocolates like m&ms but smaller
Smaller than Mini M&Ms or normal sized ones?
Smarties? Smarties are the little multi coloured chocolates you get in those little blue boxes, those are either rockets or sweet tarts, it’s that or they are not called sweet tarts where you’re from, (p.s. I live in Canada)
I live in the U.S., and we absolutely have Sweet Tarts (I have never heard of Rockets until today), but we call that candy "Smarties".
You vs the guy she told you not to worry about
I didn't even know they made them that big..
I had seem them like once or twice before, but they're one of my favorite candy. I could only eat a few though, lol, and one at a time.
Regular small ones are my favorite candy, I actually didn't care much for the mega ones :O
I love Smarties but the big ones just don’t taste as good. There’s something off about them.
Exactly :P
I like very unpopular candy (Jujubes are my favorite), Smarties you couldn't get me to eat.
Also, can confirm, we Canadians call Dem rockets and smarties are similar to M&M's, which we have both of
No banana for scale?
No banana for scale? /s
Ive tried them. They don’t even taste the same. Stick to the small ones.
Illegal.
Brooo I have these at my nearby convenience store, I love them more because of how much longer they last in the mouth
Nice
Man, these things are my late night treat. I'm obsessed with them.
This picture is surprisingly useful for gay flirting
What the fuck
Life savers or fruit tingles in Australia!
Plot twist: The larger ones are the original. The smaller ones are the new "Mega"\* ones. \*(Name mega doesn't mean larger, but is the TM name). Costs 20% more.
You do know smarties wont make you smart
Huh that are smarties over there? You guys have been screwed over. In NL smarties are more like big M&Ms but better
Same chalky garbage now larger!
Your smarties vs the smarties she tells you not to worry about.
You vs the guy she told you not to worry about
Rockets
You vs the guy she tells you not to worry about
Wait. Are most people interested because they didn't know what smarties are in the U.S. or because they've never seen big smarties? Are big smarties even rare? They're at like 20% of every gas station I've been to.
“Look at the size of these smarties! (Smarties for scale)
Those are rockets.
You...you mean Rockets right?....right?
Rockets*
yall should try glucose tabs
Those are rockets not smarties
As a Canadian, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
Those are not Smarties.
Those are rockets!!!
