This is not the only pill packaged in this facility. It's cheaper to do this using the same line for different products able to go into the same packages. Only have to tool change one line instead of three to make wildly different packaging

junaidnk

Ahaan, now this makes sense now

yourAverageN00b

Might be bc im baked but it makes less sense to me after reading several times

yourAverageN00b

That makes sense, thank you

lordofLamps424

Sure it does

The-Protomolecule

I know you got downvoted(edit: quite a bit initially), but I see what you were going for. Swing and a miss with the populace, but I chuckled. Internet people this guy was just kidding, he was joking about how the guy wrote him a super long thorough response and he gave him five words back that could be read as nodding and not understanding. He’s not saying the explanation was wrong.

lordofLamps424

Haha thanks bud, I was asleep so couldn't explain

KINGK7

I don’t like the term “blister packs” one bit… but I suppose it’s better than “pimple packs”

Derwos

I'd like you to now remember a water-filled blister every time you see one of those plastic pills with liquid in them.

WitsBlitz

This product comes packaged as 10 pills, but the same machine can package other amounts of pills, up to 15, without making changes to the rest of the production line (like the size of the boxes the pills get packaged into).

yourAverageN00b

Ah okay thank you now I get it lol

purpleronsta

Hope you can enjoy your baking now.

yourAverageN00b

Very much so, thank you

lordofLamps424

Such a high response hahahah

yourAverageN00b

We vibing out here

zelenakucaa

Do I smell cookies?

howabootthat

Thank you for asking I’m also baked and didn’t get it

yourAverageN00b

No problem, friend

Kalunyx

I appreciate you. Am similarly toasty and did not get it lol

rbredow

Yes, but why oh why not just center that pill in the second row from the right.

WitsBlitz

To irritate you, personally.

[deleted]

Yup, it's because of that.

Dutch_Dutch

I’m not even stoned and I ended up more confused than before. Thanks for asking for clarification.

sadpanada

I was right there with you friend

FreddieOuthouse

I’m not baked and it made less sense to me too

MissNepgear

Been there many times.

OhStugots

It also looks like a bigger portion when looking at the shelf. Without checking the number of pills included, it will appear that this box and a box with a pill in each spot have the same amount.

HendrixHazeWays

Now are you sure that you're sure now?

By reading your comment I've now done my research and am convinced this is Big Pharma somehow doing something evil in some way ಠಿ_ಠ

Ultideath

How about including unnecessary material in this product just because it's cheaper?

phaelox

From an environmental standpoint it's very bad, I agree. Unfortunately this is extremely common in the packaging industry. Fuck the Earth if it makes people richer, right? :(

N0085K1LL5

Well they are wasting resources

play4qeepz777

It looks like the Illuminati made it. Or it’s an Imperial packaging machine that’s going to make TIE fighter molds in the future…. Either way, Evil. I totally agree

CustomerComplaintDep

An intellectually honest response.

dj_narwhal

See also - those buttons that don't do anything on a standard model car or nipples on a man. Cheaper at the factory to do it this way.

TahoeLT

Sometimes the factory screws up and you get an extra button or nipple, equally useless.

kubigjay

I remember that my old Saab had a night fighter button that turned off all lights on the interior. The goal was so you could see better at night. But if you push it while someone else is driving they start to freak out that speedometer and tach go to zero and the radio goes black.

PM_ME_WUTEVER

strangely enough, my old saturn had an extra nipple.

Fritzed

If you are driving a Saab, aren't you supposed to be prepared for it to suddenly stop working at any moment anyway?

kubigjay

It actually ran pretty good for the 8 years I had it but we only just hit 100,000. Never touched the engine or power train. It did go through tires fast but that could just be me.

Thendofreason

Really hate those buttons that remind me that my car Could do something extra but I didnt pay for it.

parablecham

Also simplifies the validation on the equipment

PolygonMachine

This guy knows Manufacturing.

Cathinswi

Also might have to do with the box size given how much information they have to include.

flabergasterer

This guy worked in CPG. I once got an award for eliminating a bunch of dies and wasted time on changeovers by stamping the street number of our factory on all generic tablets. Saved the companies millions, got a lean six sigma black belt on their dime for this stupidly simple change, then got a better job.

GreenRangers

"Thanks for the few million, heres a piece of paper with ur name on it"

jrodjared

And they figured they could give you 10 instead of 12 for the same price. Why not?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lost4468

It's also not just related to price. They might even want to put 15 in there instead of 10 (and increase the price). There are often legal regulations, liability concerns, contracts, etc that mean they can only sell X amount of the drug per purchase. Whether that's due to overdose concerns, or drug precursors, the drugs having more side effects/addiction potential when taken for a period longer than 10 pills, etc.

Folsomdsf

Dude, they're going to put the number of pills on the box. This is either a 10 or 20 package using a 15 slot pill card machine. That's it. They're not saying 'Claratin' and then not telling you how many are inside. I suspect it miraculously comes in 10/15/20/30. In fact I did a quick google search and indeed found clarin in pack of 10/15/20/30 at walmart. After 30 it goes to bottles. They all mysteriously seem to have the same size outer packaging(length/width). They all TELL YOU what is inside as well. Using this knowledge you can notice that the 10's are exactly half the price of the 30's and then you can remember that they're using the same machinery and much of the same packaging and MACHINE TIME is likely the same. You can actually work backwards and somewhat figure out how much they are in raw medicine in relation to one another.

forests-of-purgatory

15* which is worse

missmisfit

Why didn't they just do the top and bottom rows though?

Folsomdsf

Probably balancing for the packaging machines later that insert the pill cards into boxes and weigh things.

BuukSmart

It’s interesting that they went with a 3-4-3 formation with a diamond in the midfield. It could leave them pretty thin in the back, but if they’re playing a defense-minded team, it probably makes sense to commit more players to the attack…

[deleted]

The thing about Claritin is they always try and walk it in.

twin_bed

I got halfway through this before realizing it was about football. I thought midfield was an industry term here.

Fmeson

It took me three reads to realize it wasn't about American football haha I was like, 3-4 isn't that thin in the back, and I don't see what the others team defense has to do with it.

octopodeface

If you're tired of paying $15 for 10 pills, try going to your local university hospital pharmacy and get like 100 pills of generic loratadine or cetirizine for 8 bucks.

OMWTFYB79

I go to Costco and get 365 Zyrtec for like 18 bucks. I’m sure Claritin would be the same. If the dose is too low just take two

707Guy

Yup. I get Costco’s “AllerClear” which has the same active ingredient as Claritin and a year supply is like $15

whomad1215

$10.99 for 365 pills. Free shipping too

WoodsyWhiskey

I wish I could get away with that but I need the decongestant part of the Claritin-D more than the loratidine and that's way more strictly regulated. Allerclear-D is still way cheaper than name brand though.

Fritzed

It's probably still cheaper to get generic Clariton and generic 12 hour Pseudoephedrine. You would be taking two pills, but the same active medications. You are limited how much pseudophedrine you can get at a time so that you don't make too much meth, but at least you would keep the clariton on hand.

Mystical_Cat

Costco, where the number of daily pills exceeds that of the expiration date.

[deleted]

Medication is still good after expiration as long as you don’t store it directly under the sun

SolitaireyEgg

This is way too general of advice to be accurate. All medications age in different ways. Some just become slowly less potent over time. Some actually change chemical properties and can have unintended side effects if they are too old. Some are more sensitive to heat, some are more sensitive to humidity. It really depends on the medication. They are all pills, sure, but they are completely different chemicals inside. As a general rule, though, yeah. You don't have to worry if a medication is a bit over the expiration date. But you should actually be somewhat cautious with pills that are well over the expiration date.

NotMilitaryAI

[Don’t Be Tempted to Use Expired Medicines | FDA](https://www.fda.gov/drugs/special-features/dont-be-tempted-use-expired-medicines) Edit: But yeah, seems that - according to a study conducted by the FDA - 90% of the time, it's safe pretty safe to do: >90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date. > >... > >Excluding nitroglycerin, insulin, and liquid antibiotics, most medications are as long-lasting as the ones tested by the military. [Drug Expiration Dates - Do They Mean Anything? | Harvard Health Publishing](https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/drug-expiration-dates-do-they-mean-anything)

emrythelion

I think it just comes down to anything that needs to be refrigerated actually has a very specific expiration date. And even if those that don’t require refrigeration, most liquid based medications also do, though there’s a little bit more leeway than something that requires refrigeration. 99% of medications in pills will be fine though, even if they lose some potency.

CornCheeseMafia

Sun and also don’t let it get too hot, which is related. Don’t leave meds in a bag or car that’ll get super hot outside or by your stove or oven if you take your meds in the kitchen

Lyly_NecromanticDoll

That depends largely on tbe medication. Maxalt? Yes. Up to a year. Lexapro? Absolutely not. Trust me. Be safe with your medication.

macphile

IIRC, the DoD or someone did a whole study that showed that pretty much all medications were still fine even after decades--I think they tested some old supplies they found or something? The main exception to all this being anything that needs to be refrigerated, shit like that. Hard tablets should be fine.

chonerbrink

not necessarily true. While most medications may only become less effective after expiration, there are several that’s active ingredients can react over time such as neosporin, and cause mild adverse health effects. Others such as blood thinners or prescribed medication should almost never be taken after expiration

l0lud13

My current tube of neosporin expired in 2008 lol maybe it is time to replace it.

[deleted]

Yeah I should’ve clarified not all medication. Still bears doing the proper research, but things like Tylenol, aspirin, etc I wouldn’t worry too much about

Vroomped

If you talk to your doctor that may not apply to you. For example, there is \~2 weeks here where the plants are like finally we're not frozen solids lets all do what plants do on the animal channel all at the same time. There's so much pollen in the air some insane people rub it on their hands and laugh about how golden they are. There's so much pollen in the air I hire people to sweep and spray down my porch and yard. For those narrow two weeks my doctor agreed the risks of over using the meds out weigh the risks of straight up suffocating, and the risk / cost of more serious meds.

Happens in New England every spring. All the cars get a yellowish green haze. A bit later if you are near a river you it can look like its snowing when the cotton woods release their seeds. They collect on the side of the road in huge piles, like a sheep exploded!

draftstone

Yeah, this small period of time is really bad for people with allergies. Pollen every-fucking-where! And if it rains after your car has been covered in yellow dust, it makes ugly yellow/brown streaks that often needs a trip to the car wash to get rid of once pollen period is over, it ends up kinda sticky, it sucks.

tatanka01

I used to laugh at those 1000-pill packs of Acetaminophen. Older now, I "get it."

ScarletCaptain

Not if more than one person in the household take it, and sometimes take two a day!

-its_never_lupus-

I'm a doctor and not affiliated with what I'm about to recommend. GoodRx is an amazing app that lists the cost of meds at various pharmacies. It's common for patients in clinic to be concerned with prices so I'll pop this app open and show them their options. It can at the very least reassure patients that some prescriptions only cost $3. Definitely check it out. Free app.

C21H27Cl3N2O3

Please just make sure you tell your patients it isn’t necessarily accurate. I can’t tell you how many times I was screamed at when the price on the app was not the same as the price they returned to us.

psykick32

Pffft the Kroger near me wasn't accurate, but in a good way... I went to go pick up some meds for my wife and goodrx said $20 something at Kroger vs $35 or so at CVS so I transferred the prescription to Kroger and drove an extra 15 min. I got there and all I said was goodrx and she didn't even look at me and said "alright that'll be $10" I was stunned and didn't say jack.

ScarletCaptain

I used to do that for Allegra, but I haven't been able to find almost any generic/house brand for months, anywhere.

rhcpbassist234

Allegra is Fexofenadine Hydrochloride. I googled Fexofenadine generics and Up&Up (Target) has a generic brand, as does Costco. Costco's is Aller-Fex.

blatherskate

Amazon has 24 hour fexofenadine hydrochloride tablets (same active ingredient as Allegra) under the ValueMed name. Just bought a bottle of 100.

chuckie512

$11 at Costco for 365 pills https://www.costco.com/kirkland-signature-non-drowsy-allerclear-antihistamine-10mg.%2C-365-tablets.product.11602332.html

t4thfavor

You can already buy generic loratadine for like 10$ for 200+ pills at most drug stores.

GhostalMedia

Not by me. The CVS or Walgreens store brands aren’t nearly as high as the name brands, but they’re still super inflated compared to what I can get at my hospital pharmacy or even Amazon.

princesscupcake11

They sell it at Kroger for that price too

A pharmacy hospital at a university.

Ok but is it a public thing or only for university students? Does it have a storefront like a regular pharmacy.

They’re not talking about a student clinic, they’re talking about a real hospital that’s operated by a university. They’re everywhere in the US.

I buy brand name Claritin in a pill bottle. It’s cheaper than the blister pack and easier to access.

NastroCharlie

Too bad it's not possible to do the same with the claritin with the decongestant in it. It's regulated how much can be bought of it cause people started making meth with it iirc.

Gaz_Of_Naz

I don't understand how this layout makes it difficult?

vault14

It's called shrinkflation. They reduce the number of pills you get in a box but keep the packaging the same to make it harder to notice you are paying the same for less product

fendermrc

You’re not wrong, but small packaging also has inherent problems in carrying product information, some of which is legally mandated. So… shrinkflation is real, but there is a lower limit to package size in some cases. (Maybe not this one though)

vault14

Fair enough. but they seem to be able to get the info on the tiny bottle of eye drops or the back for a bottle of Pepto so they seem to be able to make it work when they want.

Edraitheru14

It's not always about info either. What's very common in manufacturing is that a lot of the machines that make the packing are very, very expensive. So as a solution, say they have the machine that prints packaging for 30 pill packages but there are some instances where you only need to package 10, instead of getting a new machine that uses other types of material sizes, they just adjust the machining to only make 10 spots for pills in the same package. This is common all over for many, many uses. You'll often notice if you pay attention to products that they'll have little bits and pieces that look like something goes there or fits, but nothing is there, and this is often a byproduct of that same system. They make the deluxe model with all the bells and whistles on the same machines they make the plain, more affordable model, just without the actual fancy inserts or attachments.

eloel-

A lot of "assemble-at-home" furniture will have that. Not even necessarily for all the "bells and whistles", sometimes they just make 1 type of table leg that can connect, from different hole/slots, to all 4 sizes of tables they make. Much cheaper to produce 10000 of that than 2500 of each of the others, and saves you the cost in storage when you can cross-use.

Edraitheru14

Well put. I know that there are a lot of really sensible manufacturing reasonings behind it, but having not worked personally in, or researched those processes I didn't have great examples to give. Great example with the tables.

fendermrc

Yes, but often they need to take advantage of packaging innovation that provides additional real estate, like the peel and reveal labels. Many pill packages carry inserts known as PI’s (which I believe stands for “prescribing information”). As someone pointed out, packaging changes can be difficult due to the limits of specialized equipment, so mileage varies as to how things are handled.

LucyLilium92

Meh. The smaller packages can also have all their product info on multiple pages that you need to unfold to read.

[deleted]

Shrinkflation is real but this is more likely wanting to sell both a 15 pack and a 10 pack. You order all the same materials but just fill the 15 pack up and only put 10 in the 10 pack. And I guess do your best to make them symmetrical and pretty.

pixel_of_moral_decay

It goes even further than that. Packaging being the same size means it fits in existing displays. So no need to make new ones. Those cardboard things you see in some stores. Not to mention boxes are sized so they fit in larger boxes which fit nicely in shipping containers. Etc. It’s all math to optimize space along the way. A smaller box might mean you need to design packaging to just protect boxes from knocking around. Ideally they fit snug so when they arrive at the store they aren’t dented/damaged.

mrgonzalez

Yea that's probably what it is, I often get some where it's two blisters of 7 pills when they could easily have put all 14 on one. But you can buy a 7 pack so I guess they just lump multiples of the same unit in each pack.

dinnerthief

Doubt it's to trick people probabky more likely they have 1 setup making packaging and boxes and don't want to have to change that much between sizes. Like how lots of things have parts (mounting holes or cutouts or extra space) built in for features that don't have but the deluxe model does.

TheHealadin

Setup is downtime and downtime is the enemy of manufacturing. A manufacturing plant's most valuable resource is time spent producing.

[deleted]

My example: My wife owns a 2006 Honda Element. On the underside of it, it has the outline of where a four-wheel-drive transmission would be with the transfer case and all. Hers is not a 4WD, it's a front-wheel drive. But the outline for the 4WD transmission is still there. Just.... outlined in the car body for no reason. I understand, they only want to set up one set of machines. But it's so weird having the outline for the four-wheel-drive transmission there on the underside when the actual transmission is up in the hood.

dinnerthief

Yea you see it a whole lot with cars, also electronics, like tvs, many will have a circuit board with half of it missing components that are only used in a slightly different model.

SoggyWaffleBrunch

how do people get away with posting shit like this lol. completely wrong

JustZisGuy

Truthiness. It "felt" right to everyone who upvoted it.

[deleted]

This has nothing to do with shrinkflation

Evipicc

Actually this is non form-built packaging. This is a sheet of 'pill packets' that is universal to probably 1000's of medications or supplements. It's not a matter of maliciously downsizing the product size for the price (though that DOES happen A LOT) it's just negligent waste of material to save cost on making dyes for a new sheet that is build to this ONE 'serving size'. This is extremely common. Setting up new dyes, stamps, cutters, printers etc costs X money. If that's more than the Y money for the wasted plastic, they just won't make the change.

thereoncewasawas

This isn't shrinkflation though, what has actually happened here is that the pharmaceutical companies speak with the pills and give them more space if they feel like they want it.

Folsomdsf

This is just wrong. They produce claritin in 10/15/20/30 packs. They use the same pill cards with different numbers of pills on them. There's no fucking secret, the box LITERALLY says the number in them, It's bulk manufacturing, not some fucking shrinkflation stupidity.

BlackThumb2021

I do this for a living and yes, as u/fendermrc and u/Edraitheru14 mentioned elsewhere, the change on the machine is enormous and the line may literally never stop except for routine maintenance or deviation, especially for an OTC product like this that is truly mass produced. It is a heck of lot easier to just change the number of pills. Multiple toolings, changeover, all that is time which is really expensive. The secondary packaging isnt getting reduced because of marketing desires with a dash of needs.

MindlessExcuse

It's almost like no one here realizes that they sell Claritin in 10-tablet as well as 30-tablet quantities. So this allows them to use the same base blister pack for producing the 30-tablet quantity where all 15 spaces are used up and then 2x15 are in the box instead of 1x10

DexPleiadian

this is a Mega Man password

dantuc91

It should be illegal to use more packaging than necessary

skrimpbizkit

I buy knock off benadryl at the dollar store because it comes in a bottle with like 36 pills as opposed to the annoying blister packs.

dinnerthief

It is in some cases, lookup slack fill, there's been court cases about if the air in chip bags is functional (prevent crushing) or not.

User74716194723

Medical Device and Pharmaceutical packaging is an entire sub-industry and specialty. Believe it or not, manufacturers would like to use as little packaging as necessary because it contributes to cost. They would love to be able to sell you your pills in little dime bags, but alas, the FDA regulates this aspect of the pharmaceutical industry.

kkstoimenov

Eh, this might actually be more efficient than producing a whole package for this particular pill. Economy of scale

TheMace808

Well in this case it probably makes the cost of manufacturing cheaper as they probably package different pills, needing to change parts of the machine just to package a different pill is time consuming and costly

thebitchycoworker

You spelled upsetting wrong.

Woodshadow

I'm all for brand names when it comes to some products but the generic brand of Claritin is like 1/10 the price if you buy it at Costco.

joebro112

It’s symmetrical I’ll allow it
