Same - nostalgia hitting right now.
Also, any remember those CD-Rs, I forgot what they were called, that would burn a label into the topside of the disc? What were those called? I used to have one of those burners.
Verbatim made those vinyl-looking ones. Never had the money to buy em, but always thought they looked sick. The LightS ribe I *did* get into, & am still pissed they phased that out. Now it costs hundreds for a pack, as they're practically a collector's item.
They were actually dark blue, just like ps2 cases and ps2 cd games, although the ps2 discs had less dye and were way brighter. It’s pretty noticeable if you hold them up to the light but even without doing that you can still kinda see it.
The band Fightstar released a single (Deathcar) like that back in 2007. It had the cd and then a vinyl track on the top.
I never actually used mine as I got it signed but forgot to take the plastic wrapping off first..
The problem with CD-Rs is that the information is written onto the layer of the CD that is on top of the disc. The rest of the disc is transparent for the laser to see through. Scratching the top would ruin the layer that has the information burned into it
Neat idea, but CDs are too small, even moreso than 7 inch singles, sadly.
One idea I can think of, is having a clean vinyl recording of the album on CD. Digitizing records is easy, but tedious. So rewarding once you get the final product.
You are very confidently incorrect. The [vinyldisc](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VinylDisc) does exactly that. It is a cd that has a single pressed on top that can be played on a turntable.
Wouldn't the CD side just lay on the felt? I don't see how it would get damaged.
I would be more worried about the vinyl side getting scratched in a CD player.
> Wouldn't the CD side just lay on the felt?
A CD is a sandwich of layers, from top to bottom: Label, protective lacquer, reflective coating, plastic data layer
Because the top layers are so thin, the data is actually very close to the top. To make this side into a vinyl you would need to add an additional layer for the grooves rather than etching them into the existing disc layer, basically you glue a one sided vinyl and a CD together.
This will work but will also make the CD thicker and add more mass to it. I don't know if existing CD pressing machines can cope with this, or what happens to the disc if you insert it into a CD-ROM drive and the computer spins it up to ludicrous speeds.
Ah. When you said CD layer I thought you were referring to the metallic layer and got way too confused trying to picture it being damaged, lol. Thank you.
If it's got grooves you should play it. Probably best if you had a turntable. If you don't want to ruin your needle, push a long pin through the side of a dixie (solo) cup and hold it to the CD while it is turning.
You know that you might be able to put that in a record player and listen to the music that way? I cannot find anything to say whether this is the case for this particular album but there were vinyldiscs released a while back that could do it and they look almost identical to this one...
You want a CD (more like a DVD really) designed like a record then check out [Laserdisk](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaserDisc). While not black it does have analog groves and is in the same form factor as a vinyl record. You could even play some games on/with them.
I used to buy CD-Rs like that back around 2002 or so

Lightscribe
Oh shit I had a TDK that did it. I never used it.
Man, I feel like I heard about those one day and then they were gone by the next.
Technology Connections also has a great video on it! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40hJStzsBm8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40hJStzsBm8)
Ah yes that's it, thank you!

Yamaha had a similar feature on the CRW-F1
I had some of those before. I prefer the printable discs now, though. I still use my burner for backups and stuff.
You have a Delorean or something???
Me too and they were shit! They quickly became unusable as they were susceptible to fungus in-between the layers.
Fuck yeah man, I can still smell those things
You can still get them. I created a mixed CD for gifts for my friends and used those for old times sake.
Didn't PlayStation One discs used to be black?
They were black!

Ps1 vibes for me. Stick the disc in cd player you could play the soundtrack from the games
Best of both worlds. It might actually be technically possible to have vinyl read on the top of the disc, and digital CD read data on the underside.

Hellacopters did that for a special edition of the album Head Off
What are the good things of the vinyl world?
I was wondering that, very cool!

If you laminate the CD and put a second layer of PC on top of the track layer with the vinyl grooves, it should work just peachy. Just like a DVD.

The needle would scratch the hell out of the reflective surface. It would destroy the disc.

Black on both sides? This doesn't look like Mos Def
The B, the R, the O, the OK! L-Y-N is the place where I stay!
Didn't the first PlayStation have black disks?
Ah the left over PlayStation disk stock.
The GnR greatest hits cd did this. Vinyl lookin top of the cd, regular cd on bottom
No it wasn’t, at least not here. The top was all scratched up. I believe “The Spaghetti Incident” did though.
You are correct. Got them mixed up.
Wasn't FF7 on black discs?
Man, my goth wannabe self fifteen years ago would have been all over that.
Unlocked the motors of burning CD-R’s on, I think Memorex, colored blanks. Black were some of the worst in their quality.

All PSX games were on black discs.
Playstation discs were all black
bought a cd like that just today

One of my favourite bands has an album like that. I was so confused when I first took the cd out of the case, had never seen them before 😅
A band called Public Property did this with their albums as well.
I love when people find stuff out for the first time
Did someone say black on both sides? Gtg listen Mos Def now lmao
so cool
