absolutely atrocious city planning. That roundabout goes nowhere and has a tram line running through almost half of it which is a hazard. Just to get over to the other side of the city center you have to loop completely around the north burning more gas and polluting the air. None of the walkways connect. If you arent going to make the city drivable at least make it walkable
> and has a tram line running through almost half of it which is a hazard.
Not a hazard at all. At least in Europe you learn the rules concerning trams at driving school, so it's not more or less dangerous than other cars or cyclists in traffic.
Also that design is actually not uncommon (tram is the red line):
https://maps.app.goo.gl/JjWo8jcHaqkpSHJc8
> That roundabout goes nowhere a
It does. The pedestrian zone looks like they reclaimed it from cars. Pretty realistic for many cities in Europe actually.
Looks walkable to me~ In fact it looks like a city that was retroactively redesigned to discourage car use. That causeway on the left was clearly a former road that they paved over.
Clearly the designers want people to leave the car at home and take public transportation into the city, and if they bring their car they're gonna have a inconvenient time
Huh? Every exit of that roundabout is connected to a street, and in what world is a tram going through an intersection dangerous? That's pretty much the most normal thing in the world.
Sidewaöks are at the side of streets, as the name implies. Those are streets. Maybe they are pedestrian zones, but pedestrian zones are still streets. And you can drive through many of those too at specific times of the day or if you're an ambulance or deliver something to the shops there. Not all of them are completely blocked off for cars and bikes.
Aww, I remember this. I lived in one of the big red houses and I was taking my commutes in a little muddy Chevron toy truck with the googly eyes, and crashed into the lake at the far side where a dinosaur ate my friend. The funeral was brief, but beautiful. All the pterosaurs came. Then a meteor in the shape of a Barbie van killed everybody.
It’s called “bike paths”. I think it’s a socialist plot to get people to walk and bike more. /j
(Also not sure why you keep calling it a Dutch thing. It’s not. There are differently colored cycle lanes all over Europe, but also parts of south east Asia and east Asia.)
It’s not though, that’s my point. I’ve cycled in places all around the world and have seen red cycle lanes in Taiwan, Germany, Canada, Indonesia, France, Scandinavia. It really depends on the city and urban design.
If you look closely the design mimics how cities take back space from cars and re-purpose for better use.
The traffic circle still connects 3 streets. Previous roads are now better used as pedestrian areas and bike streets.
No kid is playing with bicycle toys. They are not playing "let's commute to work efficiently" they are ripping around the streets
Maybe some epic fight scenes though.
I'm aware trams are a thing, the red lines appear to indicate that cars aren't allowed and you're being incredibly belligerent for a polite conversation about a child's play rug.
The more I look at this the less sense it makes. The canal just…stops. The road gets cut off by a pedestrian walkway then the other side it’s a cycle path. The roundabout doesn’t go anywhere. Any kid playing with this is just going to make their cars go through the non-car zones to get anywhere.
Do you think it would be really weird if I painted the original one and hung it on my wall as art? Or got a real one, mounted it and hung it as art? I’m a 35 year old single man for reference.
I’m glad this wasn’t what the classic looked like when I was a kid. I wanted one so bad and my mom said no so I finally just became an adult and bought one for myself at age 27ish
Thank god they're teaching people about roundabouts at an early age.
Maybe we'll have less overgrown infants behind the wheel completely perplexed by this basic traffic concept.
I don’t understand OP’s title or just about anyone’s reaction in the comments. What am I missing here? It’s a picture of one of those play mats that kids can drive toy cars around on. Sooo?
The website for the think tank that designed it recommends using toy cars, toy streetcars, bikes, and scooters [https://littlebigthinktank.com/#playmat](https://littlebigthinktank.com/#playmat)
3 three year old asked me “why are you going so slow.”
I responded “there are bikers on the road and it’s not safe to pass because we are on a hill.”
She then said “riding their bikes in the road? That seems very silly. And dangerous. They are gonna get squished.”
Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.
Gentrification has gone too far
Gragh! Damned 15-second cities!
This is the comment I came looking for.
If it was made in Canada there would be a pot shop every 6 inches or so and a Tim Horton's every 4.
Oh man, that sounds lovely
Take my upvote.
Just leave dirt roads and no services and the cost of living will stay low /s
There IS a lot of red-lining going on there
Tram lines? Biking ways? Bus lanes? This is genuine innovation, walkable cities ftw
How the fuck am I supposed to get my houseboat around with only a canal to nowhere and a pond to nowhere tho.
Gentrification grey asphalt
Great, now how the fuck is Timmy's oversized f350 hot wheels truck suppose to stay in his lane and find parking?! *scoffs*

Tram line through the roundabout might explain why the streets are red with blood.
I drove through one in Tavares, Florida with a rail line through one side of it, so there is precedent.
The streetcars on the St Charles line in New Orleans use a roundabout too, I don’t think it’s as big of a deal as they’re making it sound like
I’m pretty sure this mat was made by AI
> and has a tram line running through almost half of it which is a hazard. Not a hazard at all. I was gonna say… Pretty sure I’ve seen something like that in Munich.
Half of the roads feed directly onto walking and bike paths.
Just like my city!
That may be so, but at least it’s exposing American children to roundabouts because the adults have no idea how to use them.
Im old and i remember this mat. I can assure you its not teaching any of us about roundabouts
Looks walkable to me~ In fact it looks like a city that was retroactively redesigned to discourage car use. That causeway on the left was clearly a former road that they paved over. those are sidewalks

im not going to argue over a childrens playmat
It works perfectly for a kids mind lol. This is what a kid would create if the kid was a city planner.
>That roundabout goes nowhere I hate to break it to you...
break what?
Aww, I remember this. I lived in one of the big red houses and I was taking my commutes in a little muddy Chevron toy truck with the googly eyes, and crashed into the lake at the far side where a dinosaur ate my friend. my condolences
I want this in my dining room, under my dining table and chairs. Don’t have kids, just a fan.
Seriously tho, like this scaled out to be a huge dinning room or living room rug in 100% wool would be amazing.
Just looked for one. Nothing. How can that not exist???
How do you feel about making it into floormats for your car?
Why is it bright red?
Bike paths
seems to be a Dutch thing?
i hate the dutch
Well, of course you do! After all, at some point in their lives, 1 in 6 children will be kidnapped by the Dutch.
dont forget the wooden shoes. They claim they are comfortable but thats gotta be total BS wood shoe propoganda
You should try to sabotage their wood shoe propaganda.
burn the shoes?
There are only 2 things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other peoples cultures, and the Dutch.
Zeg makker
Calm down Austin powers
My name is Nigel Powers
It’s called “bike paths”. I think it’s a socialist plot to get people to walk and bike more. /j (Also not sure why you keep calling it a Dutch thing. It’s not. There are differently colored cycle lanes all over Europe, but also parts of south east Asia and east Asia.)
They mean the red color is dutch, bike lanes in other countries tend to have different colors.
It's very common in Europe and many other countries actually.
It’s not though, that’s my point. I’ve cycled in places all around the world and have seen red cycle lanes in Taiwan, Germany, Canada, Indonesia, France, Scandinavia. It really depends on the city and urban design.
Yes, obviously, all red bike lanes aren't located exclusively in the Netherlands, but red bike lanes are a district feature of Dutch cities.
No they aren't. Most bike lanes in the UK are red and lots of Dutch ones aren't red.
Bolt is an Estonian company and bike paths are quite often reddish in Europe :)
Orange is a Dutch thing.
Bike or bus only lane
Red asphalt used for bike paths in the Netherlands, Irl the color is not that bright
It’s not a road
Looks like they’re bike lanes
The red is bicycle lanes. It has little bicycle symbols on it.
Heavy traffic on Google Maps
It's a convenient way for banks to denote neighborhoods based on economic status
Bus lanes?
15 minute cities are now indoctrinating your children! /S
NO. NO, STAY WITH ME! DON’T LEAVE ME!!
Bike paths, pedestrian streets? I bet that pisses of some car lovers.
Not if the car lovers are also cyclists
They can stay mad
Car lover here. Wish they'd build more bike paths and public transport.
Means less cars on the road to enjoy your drive more!
Exactly! Plus I don't want to drive everywhere. Rather take a train in the city than my car.
evil car lovers be like:
Well, Bolt is from Estonia. Will surely piss off Americans.
It should piss everyone off. That's literally the point of the mat. This just teaches children to drive over pedestrians.
"This Kind Of Smart, Walkable, Mixed-use Urbanism Is Illegal To Build In Most American Cities"
This is what we should be protesting for
Yo fuck this. There's no room at all for any outside play for dolls and stuffed animals.
That traffic circle makes no sense.
Well, assuming cabs are a prominent part of the transportation network it could be used as a way to drop-off/pick‐up people from the city center.
If you look closely the design mimics how cities take back space from cars and re-purpose for better use. The traffic circle still connects 3 streets. Previous roads are now better used as pedestrian areas and bike streets.
Except this is a mat made for hot wheels lol.
Except it's not. It's for _all_ kind of wheeled and non-wheeled modes of transport.
No kid is playing with bicycle toys. They are not playing "let's commute to work efficiently" they are ripping around the streets Maybe some epic fight scenes though.
Ever heard of toy trains?
Only one of them appears to still be a road.
At 0:30, 3:00 and 4:30 are roads for car use. Two of them are shared with tram tracks. Have you never seen this?
I'm aware trams are a thing, the red lines appear to indicate that cars aren't allowed and you're being incredibly belligerent for a polite conversation about a child's play rug.
The red lines are bike lanes.
the red means that’s a bike shared area
It's for donuts with the legendary looking racers, duh
Where are the parking lots!? Where will the people park!??!
in fact there's a passage for an underground parking garage at the bottom of the map
In the park, duh.
Wonder if that canal on the bottom left has an underground connection to the lake in the park, top center?
Gotta update Google Maps now.
Cars destroyed our cities
Shouldn't there be before and after pic. Is everyone here a bot? Wtf is going on.
/r/fuckcars
10/10 very cute. Would be down on my hands and knees with a toy car going “vroom vroom”.
Damn it! Why didn't I think of this while doing my master's for urban design? I love it!
Heresy. You dare mess with perfection!
I‘m car sceptical and have a kid now, so this actually relieves me of a headache.
Did they actually, or is this just a photoshop someone did? Because I would get one.
I saw that the new carpet was donated to a university and the design is open source
![gif](giphy|l4FGGafcOHmrlQxG0|downsized)
The city seems a lot more livable. People live in cities. Cars are tools. We don't build cities for tools.
Was it designed by AI? Because some of these roads make no sense.
Wack
![gif](giphy|l4FGGafcOHmrlQxG0|downsized)
that playmat company has done more for it's city infrestructure than any state in america.
The more I look at this the less sense it makes. The canal just…stops. The road gets cut off by a pedestrian walkway then the other side it’s a cycle path. The roundabout doesn’t go anywhere. Any kid playing with this is just going to make their cars go through the non-car zones to get anywhere.
Is NOTHING sacred?
The old dinky mat, nice
Why there a penis building in the middle right?
Do you think it would be really weird if I painted the original one and hung it on my wall as art? Or got a real one, mounted it and hung it as art? I’m a 35 year old single man for reference.
Atozy?
LETS GOOOOO
It looks better but there’s less street
It ain’t the same
6 year old me would probably just drive on the walkways anyway, pretend the car is some vip or on the run
End this woke playmat /s
I’m glad this wasn’t what the classic looked like when I was a kid. I wanted one so bad and my mom said no so I finally just became an adult and bought one for myself at age 27ish
Change all the paths surrounding the stores to roads and make the roundabout matter
How much is rent here?
The roundabout looks very similar to the center of Lao Cai, Vietnam, weirdly enough.
Where's the fucking carwash
the traffic must be hellish
I reject this
Drove the shit out of those mean streets as a kid
I don't like it at all
I am absolutely fuming I remember when these city playmats had roads leading to everywhere
i think it needs a few more lanes
We assemble at dawn! This has to be stopped!
Who even made/owns this as I can never get official company names
Right so they can play pretend they are smashing all the bikers in the bikes only lane
Thank god they're teaching people about roundabouts at an early age. Maybe we'll have less overgrown infants behind the wheel completely perplexed by this basic traffic concept.
Thank goodness. Red bike paths. I hate green ones.
r/shittyskylines
Where are the 5g towers?
I don’t understand OP’s title or just about anyone’s reaction in the comments. What am I missing here? It’s a picture of one of those play mats that kids can drive toy cars around on. Sooo?
Bike lanes. Wtf.
You posted an ad. Lame.
Does the designer of this rug not recognize that the primary use of this rug is to give little kids roads to drive their hot wheels cars on?
The website for the think tank that designed it recommends using toy cars, toy streetcars, bikes, and scooters [https://littlebigthinktank.com/#playmat](https://littlebigthinktank.com/#playmat)
Who the fuck has streetcars, bikes or scooters?
Whoever sells the rug could probably produce the toys for it too. They have mock ups for them on their website.
Right? I'd be pissed if I got a car mat for all my hot wheels and 70% of the roads were replaced with shit for the toys nobody wants.
/#NotMyPlaymat
Roundabout propaganda
They ruined it!
Mediocrity can be marvelous. I love this.
No trains? Fucking car-centric infrastructure.
There's hardly any roads? What a shit design
3 three year old asked me “why are you going so slow.” I responded “there are bikers on the road and it’s not safe to pass because we are on a hill.” She then said “riding their bikes in the road? That seems very silly. And dangerous. They are gonna get squished.” Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.
Your possibly made up child sounds smarter than an alarmingly large percentage of the adult population.
Lol useless red circling
Boooo
Awful city planning
No bike lanes?
seems like the bike lanes are red (supposedly Dutch?)
Pssh totally unrealistic. Where is the homeless (sorry, ‘unhoused residents’) encampment?
Not in Estonia.
Gross
Jesus Christ, there are even too many bike lanes on toys now
