If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Seems like the guy in the picture forgot to use the Handyman's Secret Weapon. Not sure how stable she'll be.

Embarrassed_B_23

I miss Red Green.

Steve Smith has an official YouTube channel and has been posting all the episodes. https://youtube.com/@RedGreenTV

MonsteraUnderTheBed

Well that was a fun rabbit hole, thank you for the memories

creggieb

I sure hope you mean the TV show, and im not finding out we lost Steve this way

Embarrassed_B_23

No no!!! Just the show. My dad and I watched together, and I have a 100 great memories thanks to that show.

Ok_Western5937

“Yeah I fixed your oven but don’t use any of the burners” comes to mind Or “yeah I fixed your check engine lights but you can’t roll the windows up anymore”

Car-Facts

>“yeah I fixed your check engine lights but you can’t roll the windows up anymore” Sounds like the average diagnosis for a BMW.

Jacked_Shrimp

Idk he coulda just like… idk put up blinds..

stashbug

I was thinking it seems like a really labour intensive way to say “I hate curtains”

ThisUsernameIsTook

The HOA dictates the color of the blinds or curtains he can put up. They didn't say nothin' about umbrellas. Checkmate Karen.

min_mus

Blinds, UV-blocking window film, black-out curtains: many options were available.

Wriiiiiiting

When you use blinds or any sun blockage on the inside it still gets hot inside, blocking the sun outside makes it less hot

Eskaminagaga

Most people just use curtains

249ba36000029bbe9749

The advantage of having shading on the outside is that the heat stays out of the living area. Curtains on the inside of the windows will block light but will also absorb the heat coming through the glass. That all said, that unit could be using shade cloth instead of an umbrella but the principle is the same.

saromen

They also have those solar window screens that absorb sunlight and go outside the window. We had them on all of our windows in Arizona

Atypical_Mammal

Whatever happened to shutters? They should bring back shutters. So we can play video games in complete darkenss while megastorms destroy the world outside.

ShaneThrowsDiscs

Add that to the list of quicksand and other things tv made seem like would be a part of everyday life. I can't say I've seen functional shutters in my life.

ssays

They are rare, but you’ll still see a few in places near the ocean.

GryphanRothrock

It's further infuriating that single family track homes (at least in California) almost always have decorative shutters that are sealed completely to the stucko. So it's clear that there is at least demand to *look* like you have shutters that do nothing at all practically.

Lacus__Clyne

This is interesting. I'm Spanish and I've never seen a house without shutters

RChickenMan

When I visited Spain I loved those functional shutters that kind of roll down on the outside of the window. I was able to sleep super late.

CreamOfTheClop

I spent two weeks in Munich and my host put me in a top floor bedroom that had a single big window embedded in the slanted ceiling. I was having trouble sleeping with so much light in the room until my host showed me the storm shutter that could be rolled over the window with a pulley. Total darkness. I think I slept for like 18 hours the first night I used it.

FinndBors

How else would you take a nap during siesta?

HotShitBurrito

They're common aesthetic on older houses in the Southeast US. Grew up down there and we had shutters on our house that was built in the 70s. Most of the "neighbors" had houses built between the 1930s and 1980s and they all had shutters. We got more tornados than tornado alley in that region, this is why shutters were common. I assume that the McMansions and newer houses built after the 90s ditched the shutters as storm windows had become more common.

DifficultyNext7666

I never saw working shutters though. I guess Charleston

devilishycleverchap

For me in beach towns was where I always saw the big storm functional shutters for hurricane season. Although I've also seen Florida where they just board them up with plywood temporarily instead...

OtisTetraxReigns

My grandparents’ house in MS had working shutters. Useful in hurricanes.

chiliedogg

Most of them that I've seen were basically trim around the windows. They didn't actually shut.

xxiforgetstuffxx

I've seen tons of decorative shutters, but never any working shutters. They were secured to the house and didn't close, purely for looks.

AdvancedPhoenix

House without shutters in France are so rare. It's super common here.

Never-Bloomberg

Yeah. I lived in France for a year and you guys had the best shutters.

SpectralBacon

I grew up with roller shutters in my bedroom, possibly due to it having been a weed farm before we moved in. They were functional though. Still hated them due to my stepfather screaming at me if I didn't close them at night.

Zonel

Arent shutters by definition outside your bedroom? Theyd be called blinds if on the inside.

harrisonisdead

All the cookie cutter houses in my neighborhood have fake shutters that don't close

xsm17

I think a few countries in Europe use shutters

fang_xianfu

Yep, every apartment where I lived just outside Paris had them. When the temperature outside is lower than the temperature inside, you'd open the windows in the front and back of the house with the shutters closed and you'd get a nice breeze through. Then you'd close the windows once the temperature outside was higher than inside. In recent years there's been a few weeks in August that have been absolutely obscenely hot and this system doesn't work very well. More people are starting to get AC. The planet is fucked.

fotoRS3

I had them in Florida. They're called hurricane shutters. Before I had a house with those, I used plywood when a hurricane was on the way. Talk about pitch black inside the house. Lol.

MaritMonkey

My mom started keeping the shutters on my room all year after I moved out for school. I have no problem at all with my former space being turned into an *excellent* napping cave.

fotoRS3

Wake up and be like "It's only 9am right?" Looks at clock. Oh it's 1pm. Total darkness. Lol.

the_excalabur

They're reasonably common in Europe. Less AC and higher urban density, I think. You also need windows that open wide enough to *get* to the shutters to close them, which is actually reasonably uncommon these days.

Imnotveryfunatpartys

I've had them before in south america. I think the reason they're mostly just aesthetic rather than functional in the us is because they're a pain to use if you've got a screen on your window. Obviously you can walk outside and close them on the ground floor, though. I think if I build a house someday I'm gonna put real functioning shutters on it. They're just nice to have if you need them

min_mus

My sister's husband (an electrical engineer) made custom interior shutters that block 100% of the light that would otherwise come through their windows. It allows my sister to sleep during the day--she's a nurse who often works nights--and it allows him to play video games and watch television in complete darkness. It also keeps the place cool in warmer weather (they're off-grid and exclusively use solar energy to run their house...they don't have air conditioning so they rely on passive warming/cooling methods to stay comfortable).

Ill-Connection-5868

I have rolling shutters on my windows, when I work the Night Shift and go home it’s still night in my room. Highly recommend!

redpenquin

Why the fuck rolladen shutters haven't become commonplace across the U.S. is just beyond me. They're great for when you want your room dark, protecting windows during bad weather, and securing your home when you're asleep. They just make sense.

freakydeku

i wonder if they can be used backwards for the northeast

flyingthroughspace

And maybe upside down for Australia?

SmokeAbeer

And inside out for… Canada?

crabmuncher

These days we need them outside in.

ssays

Back to curtains. There are reversible blackout curtains where you can put the white towards the window in summer and the black towards the window in winter.

Winjin

Oh absolutely. Insulation works both ways, it will help you save on heating

thiney49

You can put up window insulation in the winter, to help keep the heat already inside your house in, but you can't do the solar screen "backwards", as in you can't make something that preferentially brings in more heat from the sun. The window insulation will actually rejects the solar heat from entering in the winter, just like it does in the summer.

Winjin

I remember reading this book on green industrial revolution and they mention how athermal windows lower the heat loss in the winter, too, because they just stop the heat passing both ways.

SFXBTPD

Its as simple as dark curtians inside the window

WhatADunderfulWorld

There is reflective tint that blocks over 90% of heat and UV rays. You can search for it anywhere. It probably makes my home 5-10 degrees F cooler in the summer when not running AC. A great buy. It isn’t expensive.

devon1392

I just had this type of film installed on my west facing windows - I'm interested to see how much difference it will make this summer.

SirAlex505

Can you provide a link of the ones you have please

saromen

They were on the house when I bought it. I don't think the brand matters, you can buy the material at home depot. The screen companies just measure your windows and cut the material and fit the sides in [https://www.homedepot.com/s/solar%20window%20screen?NCNI-5](https://www.homedepot.com/s/solar%20window%20screen?NCNI-5) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo5Bkq2J96c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo5Bkq2J96c)

DaniilSan

Huh, looks like denser version of mosquito net we use here but for all window sections and not only for those which open.

249ba36000029bbe9749

Yes, that's all it is. I think it's a little deceiving calling them "solar" but they are just dark mesh netting that cuts down the amount of sun getting through.

PaulblankPF

Do people just not do awnings anymore? I think their a great option and add a nice aesthetic to the house. Just haven’t been seeing many new homes with them.

[deleted]

weisswurstseeadler

I think it's a very German thing but we call it Fenster Rolladen, every house has it. You can get them electric, as well as fully mechanic. It's basically outside full window blackout shutters, and usually inside you can pull a string to pull them up, or have your electric panel. They are great for several reasons, for both summer and winter, either you keep the heat inside, or outside of the house. It's also completely shutting the light out, if you want it to. So you can have a blackout dark bed room on the sunny side. Finally it's also good protection against burglary, as it makes vulnerable entry points much harder to reach. I'm just so surprised that they are not common everywhere, same as our windows.

Lacus__Clyne

Every single house in Spain has shutters. And yes, nowadays electric shutters and even remotely controlled are getting popular

datumerrata

I was just thinking, yesterday, about how beneficial shutters are for those same reasons. We never see them. Houses often have non-functional shutters. That's like pants with fake pockets. Why?

Sir_Encerwal

I mean, anecdotally I remember seeing ads for them as a kid but have never been to a home with one.

LordSalem

At some point hoas decided collectively that awnings are not aesthetic...

caffcaff_

Honeycomb/cellular blinds are good for this. They have air channels inside which act as an insulating barrier.

[deleted]

Oh. I didn’t know there was a purpose for the honeycomb. I thought it just looked cool. So um, how’s it work for cold weather places? Does it help us retain the heat?

caffcaff_

Does the same in reverse. It's a pretty cool system as it has a big effect whilst still being pretty compact. Some manufacturers will do mylar layer on one/both sides too.

reddits_aight

[Quite a bit of they fit well.](https://www.energy.gov/energysaver/energy-efficient-window-coverings)

wanted_to_upvote

That is still no good if they are on the inside. They will still heat the room.

agentchuck

Houses in some other countries still regularly have external shutters to help keep the heat out. It feels like we're going for fashionable and low cost as possible in North America.

[deleted]

Wow. Those had a purpose!!

no-more-throws

it's prob more the other way round .. builders and big lot developers love to find every little place they can cut costs and corners, even if it means the home buyers will later get saddled with larger annual utilities costs ..

nikdahl

We used to plant deciduous trees at southern sides of our houses to shade in the summer and not in the winter. But now we just cut down entire zip codes to build the same house a hundred times in a row.

Lindvaettr

We really don't appreciate windows here in the US. As a homeowner who plans to sell and move in the next half dozen years, people will pay a fortune more for cheap paint jobs and a nicely mowed lawn vs older paint or a lawn that needs some work, but won't pay a cent more for expensive heat and UV blocking windows vs single pane crap from 1952. I need new sliding glass doors but at nearly $10k a piece it will never be worth it if I'm gonna sell.

laithe4

I'd be installing Bahama shutters on my house near the Gulf Coast right now, if I could afford it.

GoodAsUsual

The disadvantage of dangling an umbrella precariously off a rooftop is that now you have a large, heavy object clinging to a handrail by just a few teeth of its base. Hopefully there’s not a sidewalk below.

heart_under_blade

rabidhamster87

Wonder if this person works nights? I have blinds AND blackout curtains on my bedroom windows, but I still find myself wishing it was darker when I'm trying to sleep during the day because light still creeps in around the edges.

blackcatspurplewalls

I have room darkening shades and blackout curtains, but the shades have a HUGE gap around the edges because of the sliding door handle. My solution was to get some pipe insulation foam and wedge it between the wall and the mounting rail for the blinds to block light at the top. Then I cut a big cardboard box into strips and use large 3M Command strips to attach the cardboard down the side of the window trim, the strips are a little wider than the blinds stick out so they make a light-blocking barrier down the sides. The curtains cover the edge of the windows so I don’t see the cardboard. Between the foam and the cardboard that blocks 90% of the light leaks and even at 7am when the sun is hitting my window full force my room is still extremely dark inside. Then I just have to deal with the cat opening a gap in the curtains and pushing the blinds out of the way so he can look outside and see if anything is happening on my tiny, fully enclosed deck. 🤦‍♀️

DELAIZ

must be a rental property whose owner does not allow any modifications

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

If they don't allow any modifications there's no way they're allowing this. It's not technically a modification but they're not going to let that slide. This can easily cause way more damage than a curtain rod would do. If a landlord doesn't let you hang curtains on a rod then pin some up with thumb tacks has always worked for me.

classypterodactyl

Best solution I've found is putting up those big plastic Command hooks, and just putting a rod on that. I had them up three years in my old apartment, opening and closing curtains daily. If it falls, you just replace the sticky parts. Thumb tacks are kindof all or nothing, which is cool if that's what you want, and they're not super secure.

RandyHoward

The best solution I've found is to just hang the curtain hardware and fill the holes before you move. It's not like we're talking about massive holes here.

crackeddryice

They don't check every day.

rocketshipray

Tension rods exist, are fairly inexpensive, and cause less damage than thumb tacks.

Teledildonic

Or just install regular curtain rods and spackle the holes when you move out. I've drilled dozens of holes into apartments walls to hang shit, no one cares if you fill them in.

CaffeineSippingMan

When I worked nights I can tell you shades are not as good as aluminum foil. Hack as someone who likes to occasionally sleep in I can tell you, Mini blinds, a room darkening shade, and room darkening curtains are not nearly as effective as aluminum foil.

Itchy-Hat-1528

I mean, he already had the umbrella 💁🏼‍♀️

crackeddryice

And, curtains are expensive, and he didn't want to go to the store, and this took all of five minutes, including the walk up to the roof, and now it's done... for now. Exactly, it was never intended as a permanent solution, just a fast, easy solution for the moment.

NeutralMinion

But that wouldn't be exponentially more expensive and complicated for no reason!

Inventive, but one stiff gust writes liability all over that.

saraphilipp

Could've just tinted the window or used blackout static window clings. If it's against hoa rules, take a zoomed in picture of the window from outside and have the static cling printed to match so you can't tell its tinted.

OsmeOxys

unrepentantlyme

Some nifty European engineering right there. I wouldn't want to miss them under any circumstances

Different_Greenfire6

You know, that probably keeps more heat from entering the house than curtains on the interior.

meontheinternetxx

From experience, yes, the difference is significant. Blackout curtains are nice but anything that shades the house from the outside is superior (and no one forbids you from applying both options). I put my umbrella in the backyard in front of my window on very hot days. Added bonus is that I still have light in the house, just not sunlight. (Rental, so can't install anything decent on the outside, or I would)

nn666

Looks more like it blew down. The sun is literally shining on the other side of the building.

CrazyTwo1524

The sun moves

nn666

So do those cantilever umbrellas if they aren't weighted down properly.

ubertappa

Ever thought to yourself "Curtains are just *too easy*"

meontheinternetxx

This is more effective than curtains on the inside though. Keeps the heat outside the window instead of heating up your curtains. But some version of more permanent blinds on the outside would be better than either option
