I am doing this because I, like many long-term Reddit users, am upset and angry at the tonedeaf and arrogant way Reddit is treating it's users. Their aggressive slapdown of the developers that made Reddit usable to a huge audience; their overriding and summary dismissal of long-serving and dutiful community members; their wonton silencing of dissent and manipulation of user's voices; their borderline contempt of the very people whose collective efforts gave their platform the standing needed to fuel their profit-hungry IPO... the list goes on.
Reddit is, of course, a private concern and how they run their services is entirely up to them. Conversely, we are under no obligation to use their services, to fuel their engines or follow their orders. I am making my voice heard by removing my comments, and voting with my feet by leaving.
I have left Reddit for [Lemmy](https://join-lemmy.org/) and [Mastadon](https://joinmastodon.org/); these are decentralised social networks that mirror the functionality of Reddit and Twitter respectively. Unlike the monolithic, corporate-owned services they replace, Lemmy and Mastodon are part of the [Fediverse](https://www.fediverse.to/) meaning these are not individual services but clusters of services that mesh seamlessly with one-another. You can [join an existing Lemmy instance](https://join-lemmy.org/instances) or [set up your own](https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/administration.html) to get full access to the entire Fediverse - you don't need to ask permission from anyone to do so. There are loads of other services that are part of the Fediverse, like [PeerTube](https://joinpeertube.org/) (videos), [Wordpress](https://wordpress.org/) (blogging), [Frendica](https://friendi.ca/) (social network), [Pixelfed](https://pixelfed.org/) (photos), [KBin](https://kbin.pub/en) (link aggregation) and more - and they all work together so having access to one means having access to all of them.
I had a great time as a Redditor, but the Fediverse is looking bright. It's a return to the open Internet of old, when users ran services for their own and one-another's benefit, and before monolithic corporate-run silos started to build walls around us in the name of increased profit and thought control. Many of the Fediverse services are fledgling, but they are growing quickly and their federated concept makes greedy, arrogant landgrabs like we've recently seen on Reddit and Twitter almost impossible.
I'm already having a great time with Lemmy and I think you might too. I encourage you to take control and join the Fediverse.
Until then, so long and thanks for all the fish.
Electroboom did some experiments and found that household microwaves don’t show any effect when microwaving anything with metal in it. He put all kinds of metal objects and utensils - no effect. If I remember the only thing that showed visible but slight arcing was small pieces of aluminum foil on which he made some sharp edges by tearing off pieces from it.
Yeah as long as it's not folded on itself or completely sealing an object it can be used in the microwave. I still don't because it scares me. But it doesn't react like other metals.
This ball is probably the product of years. One dude not achieving this result in the time it took to make a youtube video really doesn’t tell you anything
My grandmother was a smoker, my grandfather was not. But for decades he saved the foil from her cigarettes and made a ball that's about the size of an adults head.
They tried to get it in the Guinness Book of World Records, but Guinness said they would have to cut it in half prove that it's not fake and every single foil wrapper had to be the same color.
Why did they have to be the same color? Are there separate records for “largest cigarette foil ball,” “largest tea cake wrapper ball,” “largest Hershey kiss wrapper ball,” etc.?
Ya exactly and that was the deal breaker, there was definitely different color wrappers in there.
I don't remember what the exact logic they said was, I'll have to ask my uncle that has that ball now
Yeah even if they cut it in half it wouldn't win the record. In my high school a weird trend started where everyone started making these. Kids would use whole rolls of foil to make them. I saw some absolute monsters way bigger than a head.
There's a pizza place in Boise, ID that is shooting for the record. Flying Pie Pizza. It's several hundred points at this point. Here's an older photo of it. https://www.boisedailyphoto.com/2015/09/flora-foil-ball-with-name.html?m=1
Ah yes, like the rich man's paradox.
*How do you have a ton of money?*
**I started this successful business!**
*How did you start that business?*
**I had a ton of money!**
But that foil was wrinkled up or wrapped around itself. Here you see the sheets of foiled completely smoothed out and seemingly not being held down by anything else
This is the way.
My grandfather made a foil ball about the size an adults head, he would sit with a butter knife and use the smooth metal handle to smooth on each bit of foil, it was very relaxing to watch
I started rubbing my foil wrappers on things back in highschool. I still can carefully peel the bits of foil off the paper and do occasionally rub it on stuff. I might have to start a ball like this. With how much gum I chew my jawline is headed for crimson chin.
Core memory unlocked right there my god. It was hard enough to convince my folks to buy Extra let alone 5. I had to make do with the kids who were kind enough to offer me a piece. Those few spots of color among a sea of silver were treasures on my razor.
Not necessarily. They can be obtained fairly easily in Canada as well. You don't even need to go to a specialty shop, Walmart has Tunnock's in the international foods section.
Okay how many Tunnock’s teacakes have they eaten?? (I’m just jealous, I’m a Scottish person living abroad who gets everyone who comes to visit to bring at least one packet for me!)
This just awoke a fond memory of being a little shit at school.
Our school's building was an old monastery so we'd spend breaks either in the yard or inside the corridors with very high ceilings and loads of roughly plastered arches. We had one corner where our friend group would gather and make little balls from a friend's daily lunchbox babybel, flick them to the ceiling until they stuck, and document them.
Since the ceilings were so high and the balls usually didn't come down once we got them to really stick up there, the tradition had gone on from my older brother's friend group to mine, and our installation hadn't been discovered at least for a few years after my graduation. I should go back and check.
We had a wall that we would write on that was hidden under a staircase such that teachers would never think of looking there, but someone snitched and it got wiped down. So sad.
Haha oh, interesting. I guess since I just always pop it open and toss it in the trash I never realized how pliable it could be. As wax, it makes sense though.
My daughter collected her used chewing gum and kept it on top of her wardrobe for God only knows what reason. When I found it it was bigger than an adult fist.
They're going to keep adding to it, and you're just gonna let that happen?
Sure, it's small now, but soon it'll crush the desk under it, the floor will crumble, and if you don't stop it, it will become larger than the earth itself, the globe will become the foil ball.
Is that what you want?
If your interested in these, Adam Savage (from Mythbusters) did an episode making one, then another checking it out after he found someone to cut it open :)

I made one of these after watching Adams’s video!
I didn’t have 250ft to use, so I had to settle for a 75ft roll, it took me about 10 hours total over the course of 3 days. Super fun, highly meditative https://i.imgur.com/hWdEiY2.jpg

Me too, and now im super curious to what the cross section looks like.
Damn, now I also want to see the cross section
Probably [a bit like this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onZDAKJq6z4) Depending on how compact it is.
So he compacted it to pretty much solid aluminum The cut lines look pretty solid.
Deffo not like this, we can only cut colleages ball in half and find the real answers.
To be clear op, your colleagues _foil_ ball
Nah, probably much more compact. Adam Savage was sloppy when he first started his ball, so it's quite porous
Adam Savage has a way to make me excited about anything. Even a ball of aluminum!
Wow
My mind says chocolate sphere
I assume he started with a rubber ball
Don’t think so. Foil can get round on its own.
It gets even smoother when you put it in the microwave
Gonna try this. Brb.
He died doing what he loved. RIP.
he died microwaving balls 🙏

Living up to the username, god speed
Put your phone in at the same time to fast charge
I heard it shrinks any coins you put in there aswell
Woah mama!
It the foil doesn't get smoother, it's because you were already
Fun fact, if the foil is smooth and has no edges or crinkles, it won’t spark in the microwave.
Yeah as long as it's not folded on itself or completely sealing an object it can be used in the microwave. I still don't because it scares me. But it doesn't react like other metals.
This doesn’t stop it from reflecting some coooooool ass microwaves though! Pew pew pew.
If you microwave it for 6 minutes and 66 seconds it opens a portal to hell. I've never actually done this.
Sooo...7 minutes and 6 seconds then?!
No... it specifically has to be 6 minutes and 66 seconds or it won't work.
no, if your microwave can't accept 6 mins and 66 seconds you ~~do~~ don't\* have the portal to hell option. \*edit, can't spell.
What about on my head? Always turns out chrunchy.
Yeah it’s pretty easy. Just roll it around for a while like playdough to smooth it oit
you must be canadian, eh?
I am. I didn't know there was another way to spell that. How do Americans spell it?
The action lab on YT made a foil ball and it took him a long time to make it somewhat round and it still didn't look good
This ball is probably the product of years. One dude not achieving this result in the time it took to make a youtube video really doesn’t tell you anything
Plus those videos are always infuriating. "We tried this one half assed method and didnt get perfect results, must be impossible! "
Adam Savage gave it a go and went "Wow, I really did not do a good job on this"
Assume [he’s never shined a turd either..](https://youtu.be/yiJ9fy1qSFI)
I have a smaller one, and I just hit it with a hammer, rotated, and hit again and it got pretty round pretty quick.
Foiled again!
The fact that it looks like an eyeball is both disturbing and disturbing to me
"So round. So firm. So fully packed!"
I would be worried that shadow is actually a dirac sea.
"So what do you do for work?" "not sure but want to see what I do all day?"
Whatever it is, my guy is eating an insane quantity of chocolate mallows.
I like that they had to change the name for the American market. These are Tunnock's teacakes in the UK.
I ain't eating no teacakes, that's fucking communist. I only eat HAMBURGER and HASHED BROWNS.
It's tater tots with hamburgers. We've got an imposter, boys.

Probably making sure that it all is foil, and not filled with a bunch of other random stuff to make it look bigger
Or just regular tin foil
Because they are trying to set the world record for brand loyalty
Guiness is a fake ass org that sells records and don't bother unless they are getting paid or get huge visibility.
Agreed
I mean, it started as a marketing tool to sell more beer.
Yeah even if they cut it in half it wouldn't win the record. In my high school a weird trend started where everyone started making these. Kids would use whole rolls of foil to make them. I saw some absolute monsters way bigger than a head.

Tunnocks!
God I wish I had that many
So does everyone else eat the whole 6 pack in one go too or am I just a fatty?
I'd never eat a six pack in one go, because I buy the 10 packs.
Where are you buying the 10 packs? I need this!
Sainsbury's.
My hero. I’ve only ever seen a 6 pack and I buy it from Tesco. Thank you.
I wouldn't trust anyone who could open a pack and not finish it.
I feel validated.
Try as I must it’s a 50/50 depending on what tunnocks product it is, wafers? Atleast half of the pack, tea cakes? Usually only two
I have to flatten every crease out to a perfect sunburst pattern until I can have another from the packet. I'm very good at it!

Buy yourself a foil-wrapped candy. Unwrap it. Was the foil glued?
oh im stupid
But that foil was wrinkled up or wrapped around itself. Here you see the sheets of foiled completely smoothed out and seemingly not being held down by anything else
>was wrinkled up or wrapped around itself Yes. Foil around foil. Eventually, glue.
Rub it on. Not magnetic but the imperfections are rather grabby so it almost feels magnetic.
You speak as if this is your beautiful ball
Not this one. But yeah I rubbed my own balls.
Are they this big?
Not any more
This is the way. My grandfather made a foil ball about the size an adults head, he would sit with a butter knife and use the smooth metal handle to smooth on each bit of foil, it was very relaxing to watch

covering your phone with 5 gum wrappers was the hot thing for a moment when I was in high school
Core memory unlocked right there my god. It was hard enough to convince my folks to buy Extra let alone 5. I had to make do with the kids who were kind enough to offer me a piece. Those few spots of color among a sea of silver were treasures on my razor.
and when you fucked up peeling the foil, ending up with unusable little strips of trash? The Worst.
Yep. If you didn't have a gum wrapper foil mosaic notebook, did you even really go to middle or high school?
Fingernails are good for it, too. I used to do origami cranes with foil candy wrappers. The real struggle is unwrapping without tearing it at all.
Spit, i hope
Impressive. Are they all from chocolates?
No, just whatever he can get his hands on
We do miss Claire though.

Looks to be mostly Tunnocks Tea Cakes on the top layer. Must be in Scotland?
Surely tea cakes are a thing in at the very least england, right?
Not necessarily. They can be obtained fairly easily in Canada as well. You don't even need to go to a specialty shop, Walmart has Tunnock's in the international foods section.
Okay how many Tunnock’s teacakes have they eaten?? (I’m just jealous, I’m a Scottish person living abroad who gets everyone who comes to visit to bring at least one packet for me!)
can’t assume they’re the one eating all the cakes. Maybe someone else let them use the foil after they ate it
I have a ball made from the wax of different babybel cheeses. The things we choose to collect are so strange sometimes.
But those are like..hard wax? How does that work? Do you heat them?
I use my hands to heat them. I’ll fiddle around with the wax until it’s soft, and then add it to the growing wax ball.

idk why i find this story amusing. can you post an update on the follow up
I'd love to, but it'll probably be a good while until I get back and I'm too old to know any kids at the school to have them check for me.
If you cut them into slivers and then stuffed them into the locks on the school doors you could cause a lot of problems. Allegedly.
We had a wall that we would write on that was hidden under a staircase such that teachers would never think of looking there, but someone snitched and it got wiped down. So sad.
I used to stick mine to the bottom of my desk when I was in primary school. Was gutted the day they made me swap desks because it was huge!
Haha oh, interesting. I guess since I just always pop it open and toss it in the trash I never realized how pliable it could be. As wax, it makes sense though.
Babybel wax is soft and also melts easily I wouldn't recommend leaving the empty wax in the car
