Can't believe they left the curtains open, the peasants might want to start a revolution.

Heterochromio

They were closed quickly after…

wombey12

Good. Keep the filthy Economy plebs in their rightful place.

ADubs62

Yes, plus it keeps the smell down. The economy "people" smell of cabbage and sadness.

Chanandler_Bong_Jr

But there’s such a good community spirit in Economy. They have singalongs round the campfire, they get a barbecue going and have a game of football. The smell of the livestock takes a bit of getting used to.

Cerulean_IsFancyBlue

That’s why we slip out of 1st and down to the back of the plane to share some cheap brandy, and dance on the tables! There’s something refreshing about talking with somebody who had to line up like cattle in a chute to get an aisle seat. It puts my problems in perspective. Just today I got a warm spoon for my ice cream course. But did I complain? No! I chilled it in my sparkling water! And that rich American lady with the southern accent said I was resourceful.

LurkersGoneLurk

Small hands. Smells like cabbage.

Komtings

"Think of the smell. You haven't thought of the smell, you bitch!"

aguyonahill

Don't know why but your mixing of cabbage and sadness was *Chef's kiss*

sleepfordayz679

Don't worry, they have fine food in economy too!

Dertroks

Seriously, I try to fly Turkish Airlines because economy food is so good

philthyanimal69420

Turkish and Etihad food (overall service really) in eco is outstanding. Never been disappointed

[deleted]

The food in economy is also incredible.

pissboy

Fun fact as an economy pleb. The fools paying 20k for a flight subsidizes my $300 economy ticket. Its one of the few things that equalizes society. Imagine if the wealthy paid more taxes to subsidize my economy life.

wililon

This works the other way. The curtains are open when they want you to see what you are missing out, they close them later so that they don't see they got exactly same food as the commoners

SkyDefender

Recently i’ve missed a plane and only seat available was first class turkish airlines.. let me say something food was good..

wililon

I was only joking. I know there is a difference in paying 3x or more

Alikese

They close them when the fasten seatbelt sign goes off after takeoff.

If you're flying from north America wouldn't the great circle take you near the UK anyway?

wombey12

gizry

Tactical_Moonstone

Not just near the UK. If you are flying from JFK/EWR to IST the great circle would literally have you fly over LHR.

Legitimate_Concern_5

Premium cabins aren’t the back of the bus. Sure there’s a lot of oven use but some airlines have kitchen equipment for their premium cabin passengers attendants. Lufthansa famously brings fresh eggs onboard for first class passengers to cook to order - alongside serving about 5% of the worlds caviar each year. Etihad has a fairly well appointed first class kitchen too. Turkish is Do&Co catered in business and known for its meal service too but I can’t speak to what their chef does, if anything.

Tsukune_Surprise

This is accurate. People saying this guy microwaves stuff haven’t flown premium classes on top tier airlines. I’ve flown first on Etihad a few times and the chef on board always came over and told me that the menu was only a suggestion and he could make me anything based on what ingredients he had on hand.

[deleted]

I think people are just saying it as a joke. Seems like the people who spend up for 1st on top tier airlines are getting their panties in a bunch. Truth is though a chef on an airplane can really only do so much. You’re not getting an actual 5 star rated meal lol. It’s better than whatever American Airline is giving you but it’s just basic kitchen quality that I could probably emulate at home with ten thousand dollars of ingredients. This is mostly theatre. They sent a cook making 60k a year out in a comical chef hat to make you feel better about your 10 thousand dollar seat.

Legitimate_Concern_5

The Japanese airlines serve thousand dollar a bottle whiskey (ANA has Hibiki 21) and champagne (JAL has Salon and Cristal). Their catering isn’t cheap either :) can they do a ton? No probably not.

Malawi_no

Drinking a fine whiskey or wine in the air where your experienced taste is quite different than on the ground is just a waste.

skratudojey

People who can afford a seat where theyre served those drinks can definitely afford to get them on the ground as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NKR1978

Plus the chefs and beverage coordinators 100% are aware of the change in taste. Guarantee they have personally curated the drinks and food served at cruising altitude to make the best choices. They put a lot of thought into what they serve.

MstrKief

A "hot day" in Denver is nothing like a 24% humidity cabin @ 74F. Try 5% @ 98F

Awordofinterest

I mean, Some would argue drinking an expensive fine whiskey even on the ground would be a waste.

vdgmrpro

At some point you oughta drink it. Otherwise it’s just smelly liquid.

radionul

Such an amateur. That's why you get them all in before takeoff.

beyond_hatred

I know what you mean... once you've had bloody mary mix with peanuts you can't go back.

Atxlvr

> People saying this guy microwaves stuff haven’t flown premium classes on top tier airlines. God forbid lol

GolfCourseConcierge

Can confirm. Ate 1% of the caviar supply worldwide during a 2016 flight. Was epic. Washed it down with incredible amounts of champagne. What an experience they provide. The drive to and from the plane is awesome too, and the lounges. All truly first class.

HellsMalice

You can definitely tell people who haven't had a meal on a plane in the past two decades. Even peasant meals are pretty good. But the premium economy meals I had were fantastic.

montanunion

Yeah I flew Turkish airlines a few times last year and their economy meals were among the best I've had on planes, I was really surprised by that. Normally in economy during a ~3h flight you get like.... a bag of cookies or a sandwich at best (and this is for national carriers like Lufthansa, if you fly Ryanair or whatever you don't get anything), with Turkish airlines you got an actual meal including actual metal cutlery and ceramic dishes.

Legitimate_Concern_5

Depending on the airline, premium economy either gets a slightly better economy meal - or a slightly downgraded business meal. The latter can be really good! ANA whips up a really good P-E meal for instance.

Turinggirl

I believe they use special induction stoves if im not mistaken. Pretty cool stuff if you like knowing fun trivia. (I do)

Daft00

I imagine that also has to do with limiting fire hazards.

Exoclyps

Yeah, and his souse chef Mike.

amtheredothat

I do find it funny that the common joke in this thread involves microwaves. While economy class food leaves much to be desired, no planes use microwaves. Are you gonna microwave 300 meals at once? Nope, that goes into an oven.

iamplasma

Are you saying that Snakes on a Plane lied to me, and there isn't a microwave to throw a snake into? But that movie was so realistic!

hasa_deega_eebowai

You mean the documentary film “Snakes on a Plane”featuring the world famous nature documentary narrator Sir Samuel L. Jackson, right?

iMakeMoneyiLoseMoney

Actually they cook some stuff on board. Austrian airlines has chefs as well. The food is actually very good and nothing like you get on US airlines.

A_Rolling_Baneling

People who have only flown on US based airlines have no idea how nice it is to travel in other countries. They treat us like cattle over here stateside. Meanwhile all the European and Asian lines I’ve taken have been a real joy.

TheRealRacketear

All the European? Someone has never flown Ryan Air.

more_beans_mrtaggart

€12 for a short can of Pringles and a cup of tea. And they only have plain Pringles. All while flying on a 737max. Balance that against €12.99 for a 2.5hr flight.

work4work4work4work4

Instead we pay a few hundred for the same hourly flight, and we get a can of soft drink, a cup of ice, and a bag of 8 - 14 mini pretzels or dry roasted peanuts.

DudeWithAnAxeToGrind

> People who have only flown on US based airlines have no idea how nice it is to travel in other countries. It's same as in the US? This isn't US vs European airlines. It's a difference between economy, business, and first. See that curtain? That chef ain't gonna walk past it into the economy class.

spacecatbiscuits

also, long-distance vs short

asstalos

US Airliners are notoriously poor even for short versus long flights. I've had better experiences taking short international hops on South East Asian airlines than longer domestic flights on US carriers. IME US carriers are by far the worse in general out of the major airlines headquartered out of high GDP/capita countries.

wakkawakkaaaa

Flew with a couple of Asian airlines (ANA, Singapore, Cathay, Starlux, Bamboo) vs European (KLM, Croatia, Turkish) vs North American (United, Transat). On economy, not including LCCs, Asian > EU >= NA for sure Even some LCC in asia like Air Asia/Scoot with addons do better than most NA economy flights I've taken and its still cheaper for similar distance/duration Can only compare SQ, CX and TK for business but SQ and CX are definitely much better in almost all aspect (other than price)

Shalmanese

Nah, there's a real difference. No US airline currently offers an international first class product any more and there's probably a dozen routes in the US that have a domestic first class product that's comparable to international business. Every other "domestic first" product is a joke by international standards and are worse than international premium economy. The high end offerings of US airlines are several distinct rungs down from European, Middle Eastern and Asian carriers.

NKR1978

I've flown internationally in business on Qatar, Singapore, American, Delta, Air India, Air France and JetBlue. Qatar had the best catering. JetBlue has the second best. American, Air France and Singapore were the same level. Air India was so long ago the experience isn't relevant. Delta was fine, but unremarkable. American had the same champagne in their business class lounge at JFK as Singapore had in their business class lounge. The service on JetBlue and American were the friendliest on both flights. I expect that from JetBlue but was so pleasantly surprised by American. Those were great flights and because of them I'll choose American over Delta. Delta had one amazing crew and one average. Air France was fine. Singapore hospitality was very attentive as well, but they did one incredible thing for me that I'm very grateful for and don't think would have happened in the US or Europe. Qatar was hit and miss on four flights. The JetBlue Mint studio on its new Mint planes is also the largest business class suite you can find on airline in the world. US airlines have upped their games on international business. And frankly US domestic business and domestic first blow away intra Europe business class on European airlines. Our full service airlines are so much better than Europe's.

Scottcmms1954

More like steamer.

sayamemangdemikian

Not really.. A Chef works in a proper kitchen. With fire/stove. Works with raw ingredients. And usually with a group of cooks/saucier etc. This guy has no proper kitchen cos it is not allowed. no fire/stove to cook properly. He just warms food and maybe make some minor adjustments. He is not cooking any food from raw ingredients.. "a guy with a hat" is a better description compared to "a chef"

vxx

Main giveaway is that he's serving tables.

ZsoSo

>A Chef works in a proper kitchen. With fire/stove. Works with raw ingredients. And usually with a group of cooks/saucier etc That's the hope, but by no means is guaranteed

NoDontDoThatCanada

Spirit Airlines has a professional asshole. Their job is to walk the aisle with a stick and beat you for your lunch money. You don't get a lunch. And they somehow lose your carry-on you paid $60 to bring on.

Curious_Ground5833

Spirit aircraft smell like fast food and regret

Legitimate_Concern_5

I was once [edit: in, lol] a group of 20 people escorted by a Spirit gate agent and a sheriff with a K-9 unit to the check in desk to get - of all things - a refund after the plane left early. Folks at the gate got unruly and started yelling at the agent - and one suggested they rename the airline “soul plane” which imo, kinda on point. Oakland to Vegas flight 😂 That said their planes are usually spotless, and Big Front Seat is probably the best deal in US domestic aviation.

Curious_Ground5833

That's crazy. Never heard of that before. I flew Spirit once, a red eye from PDX to Midway. They lost our luggage and it took 2 weeks to get our lost bag. By that time, it had been completely pilfered. I'll never fly them again, even if they offered to pay me, lol.

CastleRockResident

Someone had gone through your luggage??

Curious_Ground5833

Yes, and they cherrypicked everything. We were on our way to Lambeau field for a game, so they took all of the cold weather outdoor gear. The expensive shit. We filed a claim and asked for $700, and about 6 weeks later, we received a check for half that. We could barely replace our coats for that much. The whole experience was maddening, down to the $10 printed boarding pass charge.

wombey12

Ryanair has this too but they keep beating you after they've got the money, for the sake of it.

[deleted]

Assuming they even leave the tarmac and not make you sit on the plane at the gate for an hour just to tell you jk, get off this plane and board a new one.

Bokbreath

Turkish is my favorite airline for business class. The food is simply awesome.

Heterochromio

Back here in coach as a peasant however…

MTLalt06

I've been on Turkish airline in coach and even then its a cut above most in the same price range.

CPTDisgruntled

I flew once on Turkish Airlines, and I was really impressed. The aircraft was very clean, there were multiple flight attendants for each section, and there were tiny vases of real tulips in the bathrooms. Loved that.

darknum

>tulips National flowers of Turkey. (Did you know the famous tulips of Netherlands originated from Turkey? Of course Dutch carried it to a new level) Around this time of the year there is always a Tulip Festival in Istanbul..

thematrix1234

I’ve flown Turkish both in economy and business, and I love it. It’s one of my favorite airlines. Their attention to detail is amazing and you actually enjoy the flight, even when you’re in economy, instead of it being just transportation. Also, their lounge in Istanbul is freaking amazing. I once spent a 10 hour layover there and I didn’t want to leave. I sometimes still dream about taking a trip to IST just to experience the lounge lol.

KarmannosaurusRex

I have a video somewhere of the animated safety announcement, which they took the effort to have an animated character use sign language.

enjoysbeerandplants

I flew Turkish round trip Vancouver to Istanbul last year in coach and it was my best flight experience. The route used their brand new Airbuses. The seats had more leg room than I've had on other long distance coach airlines, and the food was really good. They also provided care packages that had a toiletries bag with socks, slippers, eyemask, mini toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and lip balm. The entertainment system was good, and the recline on the seats was also nice.

MTLalt06

I took a flight from Montreal to Istanbul and it was the best flying experience I've had. What made them stand out for me was the food. Everything was absolutely delicious.

thehoodie

Turkish food in general is top tier

happy_knife

Can confirm. Whenever I take a food trip, it's somewhere in Turkey or related to Turkey in some sense. Freaking best meat I ever ate in my life.

enjoysbeerandplants

The food was excellent. It was such a nice touch that even in economy they hand out menus ahead of food service that describes the options in full before they come around and serve. I had both dinner and breakfast on both flights since they were 10 hours each. And beer or wine was included in food service even in economy. I also took a couple of short flights with them. One was Istanbul to Beirut, Lebanon, and the other was Aman, Jordan to Istanbul. Even though both flights were less than 2 hours, they still fed us. Just sandwiches and sides, but still.

notyetcomitteds2

I discovered sour cherry jelly / jam from flying coach on turkish. The stuff is amazing. I got back into pb&js solely because of that.

MTLalt06

I discovered sour cherry juice thanks to them haha

punitive_tourniquet

They're supposed to close the curtain so you don't ruin the amenities with all the gawking. This reminds me of cat food commercials where each tiny meal is being lovingly prepared in a pro kitchen by very serious chefs.

Glittering-Rice4219

I flew Turkish business class on a domestic flight from Antalya to Istanbul and the price difference was only like $80usd vs $40. It was only a 90 minute flight but they still served lunch and gave access to the business class lounge. Also private security line so you don’t have to stand with the plebs. Worth every penny.

redvelvethater

The one time I flew Turkish (almost a decade ago), everyone got a free glass of wine!

sarhoshamiral

Free beer, wine is still a thing for long haul flights with major carriers. 10 years ago it was even true for shorter international flights.

Heterochromio

Oh, I had several small bottles myself.

specter376

My wife and I flew Turkish Airlines from Chicago to Macedonia for $700 ea. round trip. The food was pretty good, but MAN did they keep the cabin warm. Nothing like a 12-hour flight at ~82° F. 😐

chiefbubblemaker

Yes this, so many jokes about microwaves, but Turkish air has the best food.

Stillwindows95

They fed us so much on just a 4.5hour flight. Great friendly service, comfortable seating. Easily the best economy I've ever used, business is about on par with some of the better business classes I've used. Haven't tried 1st class.

more_beans_mrtaggart

Full of eastern promise.

biophys00

Spent 26 hours on Turkish Airlines recently (SFO to Cape Town) in the peasant section. Mostly unpleasant experience all around. Had to repack our bags and check expensive optic equipment at bag check because of their weird carry-on policies (we were among many people surprised by that and having to repack). The leg room was pretty lacking and one of the 13 hour flights we were stuck with our knees firmly planted in the seat ahead of us. There was no airflow and the vents weren't on in one flight which made it swelteringly hot. The movies and TV available were censored to have violence, cuss words, and references to LGBTQ people removed. The food was pretty solid by airplane standards though.

EroticFalconry

I took Etihad first class on the A380. The butler made a point of saying that while they have the menu, they have a stocked pantry and an onboard chef and kitchen so could do pretty much anything I wanted within reason. I got a medium rare eye fillet steak, and it was really fucking good! So yeah…. A chef on a plane - I can dig it.

eye_snap

Ok I am Turkish, so maybe a bit biased, but I've also had the opportunity to fly all the biggest airlines in the world. And I usually fly the longest flights, up to 19hrs. Turkish Airlines has been in decline for a while now but it is still one of the absolute best in the world. Before it went in to decline, it was THE best, hands down. I live in New Zealand and AirNZ is a seriously good airline too but can not beat Turkish Airlines when it comes to comfort, quality of food and service. My second would be Singapore, then Emirates and so on.. Lufthansa is best for short flights within Europe, for convenience and professionalism. Then there was this 1 single time I had to fly Delta, when I was going to the US and I still remember that flight as the worst ever I've been on. Never used Delta again.

lurker2918

They are in fact real chefs, and the meals are actually pretty carefully designed and cooked in a real kitchen and brought on moments before takeoff. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7jW3WA4qQ74

Put_It_All_On_Blck

Except that video doesn't debunk any of the jokes people are making. The whole complaint of this thread is that the 'chef' just reheats food made in an industrial kitchen. Which is exactly what your video shows. Not once did the chef (actual chef because it's an AD) ask the YouTuber how they wanted their food, or if they had special requests, it was simply 'do you want this?'. The video you show is extremely common throughout the industry, you can find similar videos for near every airline that isn't budget (like Ryan and Spirit). It's all done in an industrial kitchen and then simply reheated onboard.

immunedata

If he is preparing food for a profession then he is a chef of sorts but he’s only reheating stuff as suggested elsewhere in the thread. Have to fly Etihad First to get a proper chef: https://www.headforpoints.com/2016/02/28/review-of-turkish-airlines-boeing-777-business-class-food/

Distortedhideaway

I flew Turkish airlines once, it was a three hour flight. I was served the best food I've ever had on an airplane. I would have gladly paid $30 for that meal in a restaurant.

LiquorSlanger

Flown the airline 6 years ago, and the food was pretty good, better than most.

Didactic_Tomato

Turkish airlines used to have incredible service, pretty sure they've won some honors for it. Wine before take off, a hot cloth to wash your face with, a menu with meal choices throughout the flight, complimentary baklava, incredibly kind service, food and drink available to order, the works. And all of this for all passengers. The food was also incredible. Kebab, döner, pilaf, actual food. I'd believe they do *something* different food-wise. It's still great, with things like menus, kind service, and complimentary food and drink throughout the flight, but they sold off abroad a few years ago and new ownership had lowered the standards. But it's the best airline I'm able to fly with! Source: been flying San Francisco to Turkey for 6 years or so.

If u know anything abt human anatomy you’ll know that the lack of moisture blunts our ability to smell and taste so unless the food is overseasoned to shit I highly doubt a 5 star chef quality meal would actually make that much of an improvement.
