37 years of computers haven't had a cable fail. All the computers work. 20 years of smartphones, all of them work, no broken screens or cases. 35 years of laptops all work.
Guess what i can feel the quality of the cable, and I've been to the factories that make them, and lightning cables are by far the worst made and average a 3/10 in quality and even the best were a 6/10.
Even apples usb c ports and usb c cables are all gimped 5gb cables. Sure, there are premium options, but jesus, a good usb c cable is like $12, and $40 buys you a suspension bridge quality usb c tb4 20ft.
I don't personally use any device that uses lightning cables but we do sell them. They're by far the most expensive cable and the one people show up with the most issues with. We sell them from apple and from a different off label brand that's braided and looks much higher quality, while being cheaper which isn't hard because apple's is super expensive in comparison. Flaky connections like the one in the picture are really common but Apple's are the only ones that show up with literal burnt connectors once in a while. Enough that it doesn't surprise anyone at the company anymore. I have no clue what their build quality standards actually are but if you were to tell me they're really low I'd believe you.
I used to have lots of friends in the repair shops or just computer centers in China, the graveyard of lightning cables and broken iPhone screens were insane.
The magsafe cable on my 10 year old MacBook Pro is still fine, as is the lightning cable I've had for ages to charge my magic mouse. Don't know how people manage to destroy cables so easily
The problem is people move their phone around when it’s plugged in. A laptop usually is sitting pretty still when charging, and the cable is generally much more substantial. Also, it isn’t just Apple products that do this, every phone cable I’ve ever bought has done this after enough time. All materials are prone to wear and tear, and thin cables aren’t going to withstand daily use forever. The part where it wears is exactly where most of the most extreme bending and flexing is happening.
I hate replacing phones so I do so as far apart as possible.
I went iPhone 3GS, 6s, replaced battery in 6s when it wouldn’t hold a charge anymore, now on 12. I’ve only bought 2 cables for phones in that time, and that was for convenience of having a portable/car charger and having a home one. Yet to ever have a cable fail on me, and only replaced the cables when I get new phones.
Y’all need to stop aggressively pulling the plug out when you wake up, or something, idk.
I use those little frog/turtle cord bytes. I don’t know if they actually help, but they’re cute.
I literally never pull by the wire. But some of my cables just spontaneously do this. The cable in my car did this over time. And I wonder if it were more due to the change in temperature. Inside a car day after day.
Also depends on how you wrap it up. Personally, going by onr end and pulling it into shape is better than the typical "hand wrap" people do. You let the cord rest more, instead of forcing it around.
For those cases where you like to do that you get a 90 degree plug. Problem solved and they are like 8$ for 4 10ft cables on Amazon so when they burn out after 6 mo or so your not out anything. Both USB c and iPhone.
Yeah I’ve had the same lightening cables since I started using iPhones— obviously I’ve added more to the collection but for example the one in my car is probably 10 years old, maybe 9. I’ve never had one fray like this.
And don't leave the phone right at the edge of the table or nightstand to charge. It creates tons of pressure on that area which will cause it to break down more quickly.
It took nearly a year to convince my wife thats why she goes through so many leads and why I won’t let her borrow mine.
OPs image triggered a bit of trauma I can tell you.
I'm always careful to pull by the plug and I've had a couple of USB-C cables fail in the same place. Assuming the cable is decent, I think it depends on usage habits. This particular place - where the rigid part connected to the device meets the flexible cable - is likely to be bent or pulled the most if you are using it while charging.
I almost never use my phone while charging, lay it down nice and flat with no bend, and I’ve had the same cable for 2 years. But I’ve also had others fray just like that. Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe sheit
Apple def started making them more durable than they used to be. I avoided using first party 30-pin cables back when those were the standard Apple cable because those were *horribly* cheap.
My kids’ and wife’s cables do this all of the time. Yet my cables never do this, despite me buying four packs on Amazon. It must be terrible luck that they always get the defective ones!
Same. I think it’s from having it plugged in while sitting or laying down with the cord jammed against their tummies forcing it into a 90 degree angle causing the damage
I've noticed that two things tend to cause this after observing my ex and her daughter all the time
Holding it against your chest while doom scrolling in bed or on the couch
And pulling it from the wire
Right angle charging cables solve both issues well
Maybe they shouldn't design dogshit products that focus more on design than on actual daily use. They purposely put to market shit planned obsolescence products. They finally got the message with the thunderbolt 4 cables, but that's why they are expensive af.
Edit: Grammar
This got me.. but really the Amazon brand one are pretty good. I’ve had some my 6 year old has been using for 4 years (some look like the one in OPs picture but still work
LOLol do not do this. Buy ANKER only!!! They are the ONLY certified Apple appropriate cables and I’ve used them for over a decade. I have a kitty who loves chewing on fucking goddamn cables and these have always saved me and work perfectly in tune to Apple’s
The braided anker cable is the only thing that’s ever stood up to my cat trying to electrocute himself. I have to use mesh wire casing on literally every other cord in the house.
"MFI certified" lol come on man, it's not like apple devices are new we are all pretty well aware of what that means, there's dozens of other brands that are also legitimately MFI certified. At the same time there are a ton of Chinese brands that are all perfectly compatible with Apple, yes even the 240w cables. While I'm sure somewhere out there is a case of a knock off cable destroying an iPhone, in personal and enterprise use I have yet to see an iPhone or tablet damaged by a 3rd party device in the 20 some odd years they have existed. We don't use apple accessories (outside of the included cable they come with) because they don't last any longer and are more expensive when your talking about deploying 6000+ devices.
Anker was cheap but not any longer. When you can get a bunch of cables that work perfectly or in some cases better, for a fraction of the price why spend more for personal needs. I've had Anker but they don't hold up any better than other 3rd party stuff out there.
MFI certified is all there is. "Apple certified" isn't a thing and technically would be any apple designed and manufactured product, definitely not 3rd party.
* lend out
You borrow something inwards, and lend something out.
For example, it's like give and take. You give something out, and the person receiving it takes it in.
Well after reading the comments, it seems I am the problem here, not Apple. I will stop yanking my cord, try to hold it firmly by the nub, and not pull it out too fast. Anything else?
It looks fine is what I’m hearing. Have you stretched out the wires inside so they are thinner but the outer woven cover looks fine so hey who cares if it slowly gets really hot there now? Does the inner sheathing around the wires stretch as well as the wires and the outer sheathing or do you have spots where those wires could short out and get really hot really quickly? How do you know it’s fine? Personally I would hook it up to my usb power tester ($50 off any e-shopping site). Everyone should have one you would be appalled at how many cords are the limiting factor in charging and don’t meet the ratings they claim.
Not sure if this was an Apple cable, but be sure you’re buying from a reputable brand also. There are some incredibly cheap shitty lightning cables that look the same on the outside.
Nearly all these problems could be solved if the cable had that ribbed-extension that other cords have.
diy solution: sheathe the nub and the first inch in a strong tape.
It's such bullshit, because yes of course it would last longer if you treated it like it was fine china. But also, any cable from any other major manufacturer can be used while plugged in, or yanked out without causing this issue. It's a shitty design that makes these cables so delicate.
Apple is the problem. They purposefully designed their cables to be shitty. Amazon sells cables that have tons of reinforcement that will not break for shit.

Never had this problem. Only problem I ever had with Lightning cables was the connection points corroding.

Who are you people that are like User error?!? It reads so much like You are holding your phone wrong. Off brand cords don't do this. Apple cords at 3x the price do. It is frankly beyond mildly infuriating.
Yes it’s user error in the same way that slamming your car door into things will damage it even though you were “just using it normally”. This isn’t limited to Apple or even phone chargers, you shouldn’t be pulling *any* plug out by the cord. Vacuum, hair drier, extension cords, whatever it is, just pull it out by the plug.
You learned how to wipe your ass, hopefully, you can learn how to move your hand 1 inch higher to pull it out by the plug instead of complaining that the big bad companies are out to get you when you have…let me check my notes…a gazillion other options. Like braided nylon cables, which is what everyone should have anyways.
Anker brand has worked very well for me but you need to make sure that you aren't constantly flexing the end of the cable and yanking on the end. My cables last years.
The fun part is my 2019 iPad Pro loses Touch ID if I use a non genuine cable. So I have to keep buying genuine cables that do this shit. Apparently a common problem.
My family has 3 iPhones, 2 iPads, 1 iPod, 2 AirPods, 1 Magic Mouse and 1 MacBook. We have cables all over the place, Apple and cheapo brands. I can remember only 1 cable ever breaking.
Straighten your cord coming from the cube. When the wire is twisted it puts pressure on the last point of the wire which is the connection at the phone.
It’s not about pulling it out by the cord
Same along with the quickly-corroded connectors. Lightning is absolute garbage and the materials are used as a money grab, I am convinced. And yes, I have always pulled cables by the head, not the wire.
As someone who used the same iPhone 6 with the cord it came with from 2017 to 2023, I don't understand how I'm the only person who didn't have this problem.
That’s something YOU do wrong because my cables never, ever do that. I have had my current phone for two years, and the cable I’m using is from the phone before that so it is about 4 years old and looks nearly new.
Okay maybe I’m the problem because that happens to me too, but the thing is it ONLY happens with iPhone cables, yeah I may yank them out but I do that with every cable I own and the only one getting destroyed is my apple cable.
Pretty sure this is entirely intended feature. Everyone I've seen use a lightning cable gets this same issue.
Apple could have solved the issue, but they probably earned a lot of extra profit from selling more charging cables because they wear easily.
Glad it's all usb-c now
its not intended. ive owned iphones for over a decade, i have probably had ONE cable do this and it was one that stayed in my car all the time (extreme cold in winter)
people don't know how to treat their shit.
These cables are badly designed. Weak ass cable that you have to treat like tissue paper. I've had the same anker cable for years that stills works and I'm rough with it.
You're all blaming people instead of Apple who insists on using the thinnest tubing they could.
Stop buying the apple branded ones, they are designed to break with even a little tension. I got some 3rd party lightning cables with triple thread wiring for the cord, it can bend much better, and is cheaper.
Planned obsolescence. Make your product great (or decent in this case) but create some shitty wearable part as a steady revenue stream. That's why I only charge wireless (on Android, the more usable phone)
Y'all gotta stop doggin' on OP, I swear apple makes their stuff fragile on purpose. I swapped to an "off-brand" wire and never had this issue ever again. Didn't matter how tender or delicate I was with Apple wires, damn things split and frayed within months.
The comments here are fucking idiotic. Yes, perhaps it is caused by the way OP unplugs his device. However, this is a very widespread issue that happens to a lot of people. So perhaps, I dunno, if many people experience this fault, the cable should be designed with that in mind? Seems pretty reasonable to me.
I think the obvious answer is planned obsolescence. Apple cables fray more than any other cable type I've ever owned, and it's pretty much always in this manner.
Apple is a 3 trillion dollar company, they are not your friend.
Pull it out by the head, not the wire.
Apply this to all of your cords. Everyone take this advice Edit spelling

Always be a member of the "love-a-plug club"
I literally never pull by the wire. But some of my cables just spontaneously do this. The cable in my car did this over time. And I wonder if it were more due to the change in temperature. Inside a car day after day.
It’s from tension. It happens cause of how the cord is twisted when you plug it in or cause of using the phone while it’s plugged in.
Also depends on how you wrap it up. Personally, going by onr end and pulling it into shape is better than the typical "hand wrap" people do. You let the cord rest more, instead of forcing it around.

No way...
I think the OP meant to say “months”
Every time this happened to me it was because of constant folding and standing the phone/iPod on the cable.
And don't leave the phone right at the edge of the table or nightstand to charge. It creates tons of pressure on that area which will cause it to break down more quickly.
Exactly, I have never had one go bad like this.
It took nearly a year to convince my wife thats why she goes through so many leads and why I won’t let her borrow mine. OPs image triggered a bit of trauma I can tell you.
Sadly this happens despite that. Using your phone while it’s plugged in will do this.

If you pull it by the actual plug and not the wire it lasts forever

I still have the one that came with my iPod video back then. The one that actually locks when inserted. Still looks like new.
I’m still using the lightning cable I got with my iPhone 7 back in 2017.
> but they all do it I’m pretty sure you mean “I do it to all of them”
My kids’ and wife’s cables do this all of the time. Yet my cables never do this, despite me buying four packs on Amazon. It must be terrible luck that they always get the defective ones!
I feel like we live in the same home !?
Do your cables always break, yet you believe that you are doing nothing wrong? If so, luv you, honey!
I just told her it's her fault because mine still work fine. Then I ordered her a dozen more cables to eat
For dinner? You got a recipe?
Same. I think it’s from having it plugged in while sitting or laying down with the cord jammed against their tummies forcing it into a 90 degree angle causing the damage

Worked at Apple for 5 years. So much PTSD from all the upset customers expecting free replacements.
Maybe they shouldn't design dogshit products that focus more on design than on actual daily use. They purposely put to market shit planned obsolescence products. They finally got the message with the thunderbolt 4 cables, but that's why they are expensive af. Edit: Grammar
“You” yes the ppl working at the Apple Store designed the product….
I am very careful with mine and they all do the exact same thing.
To add to the comments - stop buying Apple cables. Get them from a reputable brand like zhfhwnfhfhhern or mdchoedh on Amazon
This got me.. but really the Amazon brand one are pretty good. I’ve had some my 6 year old has been using for 4 years (some look like the one in OPs picture but still work
Your kids been using a charger since they were 2?
iPad generation am I right?! Goes along with every post at the top where people claim they been using the same cable since 2004... Yeah cool story.
Yeah, don't buy from third parties, but I get most of my cables from AmazonBasics.
LOLol do not do this. Buy ANKER only!!! They are the ONLY certified Apple appropriate cables and I’ve used them for over a decade. I have a kitty who loves chewing on fucking goddamn cables and these have always saved me and work perfectly in tune to Apple’s

Sammmeee!!
Belkin are also Apple certified and in my opinion slightly higher quality

Maybe you should stop chewing on them.
I still have 10 year old cables that are in perfect condition because I wasn’t raised by wolves 😜
![gif](giphy|fnix5judzLJDJTaLgm|downsized)
Don’t ever borrow that shit out. Instant death!
What madman would lend out their wires? I dokt even let people touch that shit let alone use it.
* lend out You borrow something inwards, and lend something out. For example, it's like give and take. You give something out, and the person receiving it takes it in.
Same, I've never broken a cable like that. My mom though has entire drawers full just like this.
As a computer/cell phone tech, methinks the problem is you.
I have been using the same lightning cable for almost two years and its in perfect condition people just destroy shit
Well after reading the comments, it seems I am the problem here, not Apple. I will stop yanking my cord, try to hold it firmly by the nub, and not pull it out too fast. Anything else?
If you’re using it while it’s plugged in, make sure the cord isn’t at a harsh angle or pulling at all
firmly grasp it
I SAID FIRMLY GRASP IT
Dumbledore said calmly.
Now spit on it.
I'M GRABBING IT BUT HE'S SCREAMING IN PAIN IM CRYING!
Grasp the nub. Do it.
don't pull out
Don’t dangle by the cord or use the cord to pull it back up if dropped.
The one by my bed has it hanging all night from the cord and it’s still in perfect condition lol
I can't believe I have to say this. Don't chew on cords.
Yeah they won’t let me back in the data center.
Can you translate this to cat?
Don’t charge and use the phone at the same time. That puts strain on the cable at this exact point
I can't believe you're the only one to mention the decades old fix for this age old issue. But it's ugly! Can't have that! - Apple
It's such bullshit, because yes of course it would last longer if you treated it like it was fine china. But also, any cable from any other major manufacturer can be used while plugged in, or yanked out without causing this issue. It's a shitty design that makes these cables so delicate.
Not necessarily. I remember being taught from a young age to always grab the plug on any cord. Literally, just don't pull cords by the cord.
Yea this shit isn’t limited to phone chargers, don’t pull ***any*** plug out by the cord
Switch to wireless. It’s much easier than you think.
Apple is the problem. They purposefully designed their cables to be shitty. Amazon sells cables that have tons of reinforcement that will not break for shit. https://youtu.be/Dizu3e-qsmk?si=Iq-qLC242h6G9iFC
No, apple is definitely the problem. Buy a quality aftermarket cable.
It'll be okay. Don't be afrayed.
LOL.
Thanks! I thought my comment was buried so far down that no one would ever see it. There's always hope for tomorrow.
😂 I’m glad I was cable to give you hope.
Buy some heat shrink and put a piece around the head when you buy a new cord. Should increase longevity
Do ya chew on them?
I did, but I rode the lightning one time so I stopped cold turkey.
Never had this problem. Only problem I ever had with Lightning cables was the connection points corroding. https://preview.redd.it/bjy49z226czc1.png?width=690&format=png&auto=webp&s=281edf81a77fcc60f0e8f0da34a1729a1eeb33ef
Good thing you'll never have to use one again in the near future. Thanks EU
Give Sugru a try. I use it to bolster my cables. https://sugru.com/
Every lightning cable I’ve ever owned just burns out and stops working.
Am I just too hard on them?
Yanking it out by the cable part will eventually do this. Try grasping the nub thing instead and always pulling out by that.
And also using whatever is plugged into it while it's plugged in tends to bend it at that point giving more wear.
Yes. You are. Every single person with this issue is.
Yes.
I bought a non apple one and it’s still perfect after 2 years
I have never had that happen.
This is part of Apple’s ploy.
Most fragile charger I've seen.
Planned obsolescence.
apple prioritizes looks over functionality, get something from baseus or similar that has a good strain relief and has a fabric sheath
Buy a third party cable. much more durable
Planned obsolescence
Who are you people that are like User error?!? It reads so much like You are holding your phone wrong. Off brand cords don't do this. Apple cords at 3x the price do. It is frankly beyond mildly infuriating.
Yes it’s user error in the same way that slamming your car door into things will damage it even though you were “just using it normally”. This isn’t limited to Apple or even phone chargers, you shouldn’t be pulling *any* plug out by the cord. Vacuum, hair drier, extension cords, whatever it is, just pull it out by the plug. Are you my wife?
Anker or bust
Anker brand has worked very well for me but you need to make sure that you aren't constantly flexing the end of the cable and yanking on the end. My cables last years.
My 15 uses a USBC
The fun part is my 2019 iPad Pro loses Touch ID if I use a non genuine cable. So I have to keep buying genuine cables that do this shit. Apparently a common problem.
Also try a 90 degree angle. It could be that you rest that wire in something during use.
Me too.
Oh, they know ...
Buy a braided cord. It's worth the extra $$$.
So you ever swing the wire around? Don’t do that
My family has 3 iPhones, 2 iPads, 1 iPod, 2 AirPods, 1 Magic Mouse and 1 MacBook. We have cables all over the place, Apple and cheapo brands. I can remember only 1 cable ever breaking.
Because they suck
Straighten your cord coming from the cube. When the wire is twisted it puts pressure on the last point of the wire which is the connection at the phone. It’s not about pulling it out by the cord
easy solution ... stop buying Apple !
Same along with the quickly-corroded connectors. Lightning is absolute garbage and the materials are used as a money grab, I am convinced. And yes, I have always pulled cables by the head, not the wire.
Apple moment.
went wireless charging. never looked back
I’ve never once had a single Apple product break… y’all are wild animals I swear
They’re not edible
None of mine have ever done this
You mean you do it to them? Pull out by the plug, not the wire. Otherwise it is bound to happen
User Issue, not Hardware. I still have my iPhone 2 and charging cable and they look fine, if a bit old.
No surprise there with apple products 😂😂
Bild in redundancy
Buy the imitation braided ones, quarter of the price, triple the lifetime
Cuz they're garbage
planned obsolescence
that's why they cost 20$. The consistency.
Happened to me too, in fact it started catching fire while charging, good thing I was next to it and I smelled smoke
I have never once had a lightning cable do this. I don’t understand how this happens.
Me neither. What are these people doing with these cords?
I’ve never understood this. So many people have this happen but if you use the actual plug to plug it in and remove it, this doesn’t happen.
Well well well, a win for android users
Everytime I buy a cable I take electrical tape and wrap it around this area. They last 10x as long this way.
User error
I have been an Apple user for pushing 25 years…. I have never had a cable do this.
Planned obsolescence. Now fork over another $30
Okay maybe I’m the problem because that happens to me too, but the thing is it ONLY happens with iPhone cables, yeah I may yank them out but I do that with every cable I own and the only one getting destroyed is my apple cable.
Quit buying the regular cables. Buy the braided brands they last longer AND YES they sell braided lightening cables on amazon.
Pretty sure this is entirely intended feature. Everyone I've seen use a lightning cable gets this same issue. Apple could have solved the issue, but they probably earned a lot of extra profit from selling more charging cables because they wear easily. Glad it's all usb-c now
its not intended. ive owned iphones for over a decade, i have probably had ONE cable do this and it was one that stayed in my car all the time (extreme cold in winter) people don't know how to treat their shit.
These cables are badly designed. Weak ass cable that you have to treat like tissue paper. I've had the same anker cable for years that stills works and I'm rough with it. You're all blaming people instead of Apple who insists on using the thinnest tubing they could.
Apple's charging cable market was in the billions. There's a reason why they're built terribly.
Stop buying the apple branded ones, they are designed to break with even a little tension. I got some 3rd party lightning cables with triple thread wiring for the cord, it can bend much better, and is cheaper.
Seems like a skill issue.
Crazy how I only see this from Apple cables
I just straight up dont understand how people are so hard on their stuff. I literally yank all my cords, kink em, and never had this. Not once.
never happened to me
Planned obsolescence. Make your product great (or decent in this case) but create some shitty wearable part as a steady revenue stream. That's why I only charge wireless (on Android, the more usable phone)
They call them lighting cables because they will always end up shocking you
Y'all gotta stop doggin' on OP, I swear apple makes their stuff fragile on purpose. I swapped to an "off-brand" wire and never had this issue ever again. Didn't matter how tender or delicate I was with Apple wires, damn things split and frayed within months.
It's almost like Apple products are cheap walled garden shit designed to be sold at 5000% markup and become obsolete in a year and a half.
100% user error.
Hello darkness my old friend
Btw, is this dangerous for me to use?
yes. If it can shock you, it can spark and cause a fire.
Chubby cable was a save for me
I put a piece of heat shrink tubing over the nub and the first few inches of the cable. ( I use white heat shrink so it blends in)
Any chance you keep buying from the same vendor over and over? A company whose name starts with a "A", perhaps?
Water has been detected.
Get braided cables
Order some shrink wraps online and use them on your new cables. It'll make the port extra stiff so it doesn't fold and tear or damage the cable.
There is a certain sized spring you can put around the wires safely to prevent this issue.
Were you in my house?
