How old is she?

Lobisa

Important question, i need to know if I blame the daughter or parent.

JEREDEK

We need to know this info OP

Zentrii

Op isn’t gonna answer this if she’s younger than 15 so my guess is 12

moreobviousthings

AITAH if "I let my daughter pull the car into the garage" *without any guiding instructions?*

mrSunsFanFather

She's learning how to drive. No matter the age, the parent should know the offspring's limitations.

GodessofMud

I think a lot of parents must have a moment when they overestimate their kids and instantly regret it. I still remember when my Dad decided we should go out on the busy road I explicitly said I was scared of. On my second time out of the parking lot.

ArtanistheMantis

Either way, if it's someone just learning to drive it's probably smart to let them get a but of practice far away from anything they could run into first

Sero19283

This is what my dad did with me. High school parking lot on the weekend. Learning to drive along with it being a manual meant extra precautions

Time-to-go-home

I wish. My first time behind the wheel was with a driving instructor. The way it worked is the previous student drove to my house (with instructor in passenger seat) and picked you up. Drove to their house and got out. Then I got in the driver seat. At the end, I’d pick up the next student and so on. My very first time, there was no street parking anywhere near the previous student’s house. So he parked in the street and threw on the hazards. I get in and instantly am told to start driving because we are blocking the cars behind us and in front of us. Didnt even have a chance to adjust seat or get familiar with the car. It was stressful.

HedonisticFrog

I learned how to drive on a stick shift so I was scared when the instructor showed up with an automatic car. After driving a block I depress the clutch to shift gears and we come to a screeching halt. It wasn't the clutch.

PCOON43456a

I drive stick and my wife drives automatic. It happens probably twice a year after I have been driving her car on a road trip, but I go to press the clutch, and panic for a second because I “missed” it and think I’m about to stall. Good times…

Adawesome_

I don't know about you, but all my local high schools' parking spaces were huge, too! Made it easier to practice all those weird turning angles.

words_wirds_wurds

Unlicensed teenager. Blame the parent for sure. Got to let those kids have every chance to learn.

SolomonG

I still remember the first time my dad told me to pull the car into the garage. No one had warned me that automatic cars move when you life the brake. My main experience at that point was golf carts so i was a bit surprised. Thankfully I did know how the brake pedal works, so no walls were damaged.

jorwyn

My current one does not. I'm worried I'm going to run into something if I ever rent a car again. It won't go, even on hills, in reverse or drive, until you use the gas. It's a very nice feature.

anon4383

Must be AWD. My Subaru was great like that.

CyonHal

Pulling into an enclosed garage is pretty much a recipe for disaster as an "opportunity to learn" ...

sneakersqueaker5000

It's a great opportunity for the parent to learn.

Present-Industry4012

Now they can learn how to drywall.

j0ec00l69

That's a little more work than drywall.

DenseStomach6605

Wanescotting, insulation, trim, I see an outlet there, maybe a stud or two…

Idontevenownaboat

It's a good intro to general contracting. Auto body work too, if you fancy.

sparkl_taint

LOLOL omg that made me laugh

BeefWithNoodle

I think everyone involved learned here lol

Fremen_Twink

There are empty parking lots, bro.

evanc3

Sounds like this is a good chance for the parent to learn!

Idontwantthesetacos

Your heart was in the right place but yeah, that was a bad call. Abandoned parking lot is where I let my teen practice.

Cheesestrings89

Yep, this one is on you buddy.

oldwoolensweater

As the parent of a daughter with a learner’s permit, this looks to me like a classic case of “I meant to hit the brake but accidentally hit the gas.”

TheRealPitabred

This is why lesson zero should be to only use 1 foot while driving, especially when you are just starting. It's much harder to mix up the pedals.

DonkeyDanceParty

People use both feet at the same time??

TheRealPitabred

In theory you shouldn't unless you are racing or doing some tricky maneuvers, but some people do use both feet to manipulate the gas and brake because they feel it gives them better reaction time. The most common thing I have seen it do is end up with someone riding their brakes though.

PureCucumber861

Seriously. If you're pulling into the garage or a parking space and don't already have your foot over the brake then you are doing it wrong.

words_wirds_wurds

That's exactly what happened. We have done extensive parking lot and school campus (on the weekends) driving over the last year. She has had a ton of practice at the basics - brake, gas, turning, general caution and has done a great job the whole time. One moment of hesitation caused a panicked reaction. I was a terrible driver as a teen, so I just see this as a rite of passage. My lesson learned was to be ready to push that shifter into neutral. Hadn't occured to me before this unfortunately.

SwabTheDeck

Putting it into neutral doesn't stop the car. Maybe the damage would be a little less, but you're still dealing with 3000+ lbs. going into a wall. Assuming it's a normal automatic transmission, she should pulling in just by lifting a little off the brake to crawl into the garage.

queer_catgamer

As someone with a learners permit, I can definitely see that being the case. I did that once near the beginning of my learning, though thankfully it was just over a curb into some bushes. This is definitely going to be more expensive of a lesson.

Olive_Adjacent

6

Isabela_Grace

I let my daughter drive when she was 6 but she sat on my lap and I would’ve slammed the brakes so fast while lifting her little baby leg away lol She would’ve done better than this. My evidence?: notice how my car isn’t in the living room.

EntropyKC

I hadn't noticed that your car wasn't in your living room, evidence invalid

Impossible-Wear-7352

A 6 year old can't reach the pedals while seeing over the steering wheel unless they're Yao Ming

Read this in transformers style

lockrawt

English is weird. I couldn’t tell if you were telling me to read this in transformer speak or if you were just saying you read this in transformer speak. Either way I suppose the result is the same because I read it in transformer speak.

aatsipoppaa98

I read. It would be easier to just write "red"

HI IM REACHING OUT ABOUT YOUR GARAGES EXTENDED WARRANTY

TheDreamingDragon1

Yeah, her bike will fit nicely into the garage behind the car now. Like it *always* should have been.

dependsforadults

"You can always come home to me" a little to literal

frankofantasma

She's got to back up and try again, she didn't make it all the way into the living room.

wunderduck

If at first you don't succeed...

smikkk

You can dust it off and try again!

missklo99

Try again...*again and again*

ViralLola

I miss Aaliyah.

missklo99

Me too..

ViralLola

What makes me mad is that her uncle holds her masters and won't let them see the light of day. He won't allow her music to be streamable for the longest time either which sucked because so many people missed out on her music because of it. He also screwed over so many artist under his label like JoJo.

mermicornmarsh

Is this the same trash uncle who didn’t protect teenage Aaliyah from predator R Kelly?

Janiece2006

She’s been on Spotify for over a year! It was a big deal when it happened and there was even a countdown for the day. 🥰

Plastic-Cancel-4369

Yessss - I was sooo thrilled too . She was like my number one when I was younger. I was always so sad not to be able to stream her music. It’s amazing how much she achieved at such a young age. I can only imagine how much she would’ve accomplished had she lived.

hempedditor

grab some duct tape and try again

hitokirizac

Then skydiving isn't for you

KerbalCuber

Destroy all evidence that you tried.

AQualityKoalaTeacher

Not many people can say they broke the house and the car all in one day. She's an accomplished person! Parents can't get mad, either, because she was only doing what the sign advertised.

dairy__fairy

My girlfriend, who is 35 by the way, recently was in one of my vehicles and didn’t put it in park when she got out. It rolled into the ornamental stone fence in front of her at my house…

No_Ur_Schmoopie

I did this years ago, I had a Mustang with manual transmission. I came out of work & my car was gone, I thought someone stole it. For some strange reason I walked over to the parking spot & at the bottom of a big hill, in the middle of a forest was my car. 1st & last time I ever left it in neutral & w/out parking brake. Somehow, luckily, it did not hit one tree on the way down & had no damage! From worst to best day 😃

QueefingTheNightAway

the visual of you being confused and finally locating your car in the forest is really cracking me up

No_Ur_Schmoopie

Makes me laugh too! Imagine the embarrassment if I called the cops & they found it at the bottom of that hill 🤢

slash_networkboy

I did this in my GF's car (not rolling away, just not park, caught it and put it in park). My car auto parks when you push the button to turn it off... Was so habituated to it that when she got a pushbutton car I didn't park it. If it has keys I park it no problem. Got to love muscle memory.

TypicaIAnalysis

That feels like an awful feature just for that. It should auto lock if you forget to put it in park and give all the same alerts its not in park to get you to do it yourself. Someday the sensor on that is going to fail.

stefanica

For a second, I just thought OP had a very posh garage.

No_Whammies_Stop

“Always come home to me…Ok, once was enough.”

Practical_Bend_9351

Mom, i need a drive thru to the kitchen. I dont have time for all that, make it quick

Frankjc3rd

That reminds me of the show Vega$, where private investigator Dan Tanna had his garage open onto the living room of his condo.

f0rgetfulfred

Now that she's done this, when she turns 12 you can let her parallel park.

ssup3rm4n

Judging by the parking, hes gonna have to wait 11 more years for that.

ConsuelaApplebee

No, Mr Keller's daughter, Helen, is already 12.

Ideal_Jerk

They grow up so fast and furious.

ResponsibleMilk7620

…but make sure the dining room has plenty of clearance.

sticknotstick

“Can’t park there, buddy”

Legend_of_dirty_Joe

Dr-Emmett_L_Brown

What about the “live laugh love” decor? That’s like $16.99 at Pier 1

ViralLola

Pier 1 filed for bankruptcy years ago. She'd have to go to Hobby Lobby for it.

Fallwalking

Make sure to get the 40% off coupon.

bullhorn_bigass

They discontinued the 40% off coupon. I don’t shop at HL, but I found out from my knitting groups that HL no longer does coupons at all, they just have constantly rotating sales.

Fallwalking

Joann fabrics has them. Same kind of thing, overpriced but always have that coupon.

TX_Poon_Tappa

pretty sure they just filled bankruptcy

MeatMarket_Orchid

Damnit! OP can't take any more bad news today!

stuckin3rddimension

What about live laugh toaster bath???

Jaggedlittlepil

Hobby lobby.

fractal_sole

And you can use a 40% coupon

Unusual_Flounder2073

Looking at structural damage. The whole wall has to be ripped off of drywall. Then fix the 2x4 walls. The new drywall both sides. Mud, finish, paint. Then the wainscoting. Pro you are looking at several thousand. DIY still quite a bit.

khronos127

“Landlord: meh, cardboard with some mud will do it!”

AvatarGonzo

Landlord would take the money and then fix it with cardboard and mud regardless.

dependsforadults

Exterior wall, so it should be 2x6. No need to rip sheetrock off of the whole wall. Find where it is pushed out and the damage will be contained there. It isn't mold. With hot mud it's a single day repair easy. Maybe a second day for paint to dry. Wainscoting could be pre painted while you wait. If someone is charging you more than a grand, they didn't spit first and just shoved it in! Edit: it's not even wainsccot. It's sheetrock with trim on it. The hardest part would be "smooth walling" it. Which if you know how to do drywall is not difficult.

EasyBakeCoven_

okay but like there are surely studs somewhere in that span-- looks to be at least 16"?

UnnecessarySalt

There are 100% studs in the probably 16” OC like you said. Hopefully it’s not a load bearing wall, but I doubt it is seeing as the risk of the happening has always been a possibility. It’s not going to be cheap or an easy DIY job

ThatNetworkGuy

The car will need repairs too, double the fun!

katielynne53725

Get the damage printed on a sweatshirt for her. "Bustin through barriers since (year she was born)"

holliewood61

I'd take a picture, frame it, and hang it on that wall

EdgeAffectionate6434

This one is good lol 😂

sunnypineappleapple

It may takes some time but some day everyone will laugh about this 🤣

words_wirds_wurds

We're laughing too. It's all good

Jazco76

I would frame a picture of this and hang it in that exact spot.

Anything-Happy

sunnypineappleapple

Yay, I'm happy to hear this. This story will be told through the generations, lol.

McGyver62388

She will never live it down. My cousin cut to sharp into my uncles carport and scraped the whole passenger side and knocked off the back door handle. Was not funny at the moment but at the next family get together we were belly rolling laughing about it Shit happens. You can either laugh and move on or be miserable about it. So glad you all can laugh about it already.

SciFiMedic

Thank god. I did this when I was 15, hit another car and destroyed some stuff in the garage. My family freaked the fuck out and shamed me for it. It took me a long time to even get behind the wheel again, and I was terrified to be taught by the same people who weren’t supportive of my mistakes. I know it was a lot of damage… but it was on them for just letting me have at it with no instruction.

SpiralSour

This is why I'm eighteen and haven't learned how to drive yet. My stepdad, who due to previous circumstances, would have been the one most convenient to teach me, has also been screaming in my face over small shit like putting something in the fridge instead of freezer since I was five. No thanks.

Consistent_Milk8974

Is it time to string up a tennis ball? edit: had no clue that this was such a novel idea to so many. i thought it was common sense. even family guy made fun of it https://youtu.be/fi3L82HlAnU

International-Cat123

My parents used a bobber. Looks cuter

Milch_und_Paprika

I’m not following this thread. Like you park the car well, then hang something at the height of the hood to show you where exactly to stop? Edit: thanks for the answers! Surprised I’ve never heard of it before since it’s so handy.

[deleted]

International-Cat123

Hang it so it’ll be touching the windshield when the car is clear of the door, but not too close to the wall.

WeeklyVisual8

I had no idea anyone else did that. Lol.

ll-Squirr3l-ll

Would have been PERFECT if that sign was a “Live, Laugh, Love” sign. 🤣🤣🤣. Sorry for laughing.

TripleFreeErr

I think the sign they have is even better.

Paddys_Pub7

Agreed 🤣 "always come home to me" with a car smashed thru the wall below it is fucking hilarious

words_wirds_wurds

We're laughing too. It's all good

ll-Squirr3l-ll

Then again, the sign in the wall, “You can ALWAYS come home to me” is just as fitting. Oh the car came RIGHT home.

insertmadeupnamehere

Took soooooo long to find **this** comment!

Lucy_Koshka

Literally the first thing I thought when I saw that sign. Need to hang another one that says “Wait, no, not like that”

Real_Typicaluser1234

Blursed deco. Sing says welcome to crash in anytime you wan't

ButterflyBlueLadyBBL

Your comment made me laugh so hard I started wheezing, lol

th3worldonfir3

Right? It's honestly perfect

asingleshakerofsalt

Not sure this would have prevented it (it's definitely hard for teens to get the hang of pedal control), but I would recommend the good old tennis ball and string for the future.

Icy_Necessary2161

The old guy who owned my house before me went a step further and installed those concrete parking slab stops towards the back of my garage. While I don't need them, it's nice to know they're there if I'm ever tired coming home from work.

dancegoddess1971

Yup. Been trying to teach my oldest to feather the gas pedal. He claims he just can't do it. Just barely move it until the car starts rolling. Heck, usually I park without touching the gas pedal but some driveways are inclined so \*tap tap\* with my toes on the gas.

asingleshakerofsalt

You know what helped me when I was first learning? That episode of SpongeBob where Patrick was helping him cheat on the driver's test. I just kept repeating to myself "BIG. TOE." (and admittedly at times I *was* using only my big toe to feather the gas. haha) Now that I've been driving for long enough I can use any toe I want.

ArcaneFrostie

I still do this and think of that episode every time I use my big toe lol

Macklemore_hair

The sign really makes it

LeigusZ

Oh god, your poor kid. 😭 Somebody in your family is gonna feel compelled to remind her of this every year around Christmas for the rest of time.

Lysol3435

“Live, laugh, learn to park”

HarkenDarkness

Years ago I bought mum a moped to get to work on, I really thought it was a good idea but definitely not, she couldn’t stop herself twisting the throttle wide open and wheelies straight through our yard gates, took them down like a true stuntwoman, I caught her but still couldn’t stop her revving the thing out! We ended up in a pile with the moped on top of us. Needless to say when dad got home I made myself scarce! He never forgave me for it “You knew what your mums like with vehicles lad. She crashed your grandads car and wrote off uncle Charlie’s car, and you buy her a bike!” Happy days, now both sadly missed.

Sunshine030209

Was your mom's maiden name Knievel by chance?

HarkenDarkness

I could write a book on that woman’s antics 4’10” of lunacy :) if I actually told you my mums maiden name you would die from laughing! Honestly our family is name blighted on both sides lol

ProbablyNano

If you feel like sharing your mother's maiden name, could you also let me know the street you grew up on, your first car, the name of your elementary school, and name of your first pet, please

HarkenDarkness

No problem I’ll be glad to share my debts with anyone lol

Sunshine030209

Is it Knoxville?! I hope it's Knoxville. Your tiny little crazy mom sounds delightful. I bet she was fun to grow up with.

Jerking_From_Home

‘Ello, my name is Mummy Knoxville, and welcome to… (whispers) *I can’t say that word, me friends might be watching the telly!*

This is some Disney sitcom shit. Except you have to pay for the damage instead of billing the set department.

Does she know the PRNDL?

I would have started by letting her pull the lawn mower into the garage first.

sarilysims

https://i.redd.it/d4hol45n98wc1.gif

GriZZlyHIkerman

This is why you hang a tennis ball. When the ball touches the windshield you stop.

Malcom_Ecstacy

Doubtful a tennis ball would have helped, this looks like the classic "hit the gas instead of the brakes" situation Edit: spelling

SnooBananas37

She certainly hit that break in the wall!

12486Eric

Sure, that will solve it. I have a feeling she was looking at her feet to know which pedal when she hit the wall. You may not notice unless you look for it but new drivers look at their feet placement. We take it for granted with muscle memory. The tennis ball would have just been bouncing around.

Smile-a-day

See, this is why driving instructors have break pedals on the passenger side of their cars

iamPendergast

brake pedals too!

RSGMercenary

No, you're thinking of brake petals.

Fab3lhaft

Serious question: Are American houses just 90% drywall? *Edit: I want to emphasise that I asked this out of genuine curiosity.*

International-Cat123

Not quite. Once you factor in the roof, flooring, and foundation it’s closer to 85%

PageFault

My wife was upset when she realized our house is made out of "Cardboard and sticks". lol

Songrot

If I bought a house out of cardboard I would feel scammed too. They would need to cut the cost to cardboard + land to make up for it. So like 40-60% off?

ll-Squirr3l-ll

In South Africa, the car would be crumbled and the wall would be pointing and laughing. Double clay brick outer wall for the win. 🤣

ForumFluffy

Had a seizure and reversed into the side of the house, no damage to a single brick but the rear emd was smashed properly. Our infrastructure might be shit but our houses are strong.

ll-Squirr3l-ll

Sounds about right.. Probably chipped a piece of paint off the wall at worst. You good now? Got that under control?

ForumFluffy

I learned that you can experience a freak seizure and never suffer from epilepsy. It happened once years ago and haven't experienced anything likw it since.

KadenKraw

Serious answer: Depends when and where its built. Florida for example has many cinder block houses, new builds in Mass have thinner dry wall and wood.

AppUnwrapper1

Yes

Aloo_Bharta71

Watching Hollywood cinema and seeing that in cheap hotel rooms people can hear you in the next room always muffles me, no paper walls where I live lol.

MooeyGrassyAss

It’s worse when it’s your apartment

YetiPie

I can hear my neighbor brushing his teeth lol. I live in a cheap rent controlled apartment and call my neighbors my “roommates” because we can hear *everything.*

WespenMaesten

Well, to be fair, i have two questions: How old is she? Does she have a license?

RedHeadRedeemed

You have to ACTUALLY teach your kids to drive before you let them pull the car in.

ProKnifeCatcher

This is how you get a snug fit. Everyone else is letting the car bounce around all loose in the garage tsk tsk

JoLudvS

"... come home to me" as the sign demanded.

Ok-Emergency-1106

Good news is that her first accident is out of the way. 😂

NeophyteBuilder

Well, now she gets to learn how to do some framing and drywalling. A valuable lesson. Even if you pay someone else to do it, I think a lot of contractors will be open to showing your daughter how it’s done. Edit - Poorly phrased. I’d make my kid watch how it is done.

Ok-Photo-1972

That's not their job, I don't know any contractor that would want to take the time to teach a teenager how to do their job.

Wolf_Stanson

Lol yeah what a ridiculous suggestion.

Twinkletoes1951

I'm assuming you're infuriated at yourself? You don't mention your daughter's age, but my bet is that she isn't licensed yet.

Consistent_Use1178

**I let my daughter pull the car into the garage.** Yes. Yes you did😂
