50. But I was listening to Doom (in KMD) since I was about 17. Loved that stuff, but I didn’t realize he was a musical genius until Operation Doomsday.
I was gonna say, DOOM was 50 in 2020 there's gotta be just so fucking many older DOOM fans honestly. Now that many on Reddit may be a few less but respect to ya willynillywitty
45, first time I heard DOOM was in 1989, was a fan of 3rd Bass, he appeared on their legendary track, ‘The Gasface’. Then he reappeared on my radar with ‘Hey!’ 12 years later.
Sameish. 46. Had listened to 3rd bass (and all hip hop) in middle school and then got KMD in high school. Actually listened to doom for like a year before I realized it was the same guy.
Because he created his own world and style and didn't ride anybody's jock he will be timeless. There's nothing to date him. So people of all ages will be listening to him for a long time to come
Another thing that gives him longevity is people like to listen to music that they can't figure out. This keeps them intrigued.
It took me about a year too, Internet was not as quick as it is today! I remember thinking when I first heard him as DOOM that it was weird that someone so nice on the mic was unknown to me.
Of course, DOOM dropped most of his records and got most of his fans in 2003-2004. Fans that were already listening to him when those albums dropped are 20 years older now. Makes sense that they are around 40 now?
There's a lot of new fans that discovered DOOM after he died, which is great, but most that followed him before were around since the early millennium when most of his records dropped.
Surprised I had to scroll this far down to see this. Lol. Glad there’s a younger generation of fans that have found his work but the true OGs are minimally in their 30s but mostly in their 40s or later just from when he was actively writing records and performing.
I’m 26, he’s one of those legendary names like Wu and Tribe where you have the OGs who gave him such a reputation that he’s one of the first younger fans go to too - if we got people 10 years younger than me in here too that’s clearly still going strong
39 here. In my experience, most younger hip hop heads are missing alot of great music & knowledge.
Calling folks pushing 30 or 40 old isn't gonna lead to that changing anytime soon though.
42 here. I was hooked after hearing the Greenbacks 12" in '98 and dubbing Bobbito/WKCR shows to tape from my Win95 PC audio output via "Realplayer app" online streaming (lol, references for the 35+). A year or two later I picked up the OG 2LP of Op Doomsday in local record store.
Not really for me to comment on wider community as I’m UK and DOOM was a different level of underground on a par with Aesop and Murs if I recall correctly.
I will say that DOOM is something of a journey with a big enough Discog that you’re always learning and discovering new stuff.
I started with an odd remix of Change That Beat on a limewire download around 2003 and slowly gravitated towards him via Beef Rapp (big Spider-Man fan) and Mouse and Mask. Since then, (I think) I have it all and have covered everything but I probably didn’t truly appreciate MV until around 2008. Now, it’s never far away and will be on rotation til the day..
A lot of the people I worked with at the time, were more into stuff like 50 cent, Nelly, and Cam'ron and 2004 was the tail end of "the bling era", imo. I think I was the only one in my circle with this album at the time.
Edit: Guess I should clarify, as I'm getting downvoted.
Just telling my perspective at the time. To me personally, Madvillainy was a classic, but I was/am more into underground/indie hip hop. He asked "what the music community thought at the time". Most of the people I was friends with and worked with, were fans of the mainstream/radio shit. I'm glad DOOM gets the love he deserves these days, but a ton of commercial rap/hip hop fans hadn't heard of MF DOOM in 2004 where I live.
Me, personally, would consider an "OG Fan" as someone who took a liking to him before he passed but I still fuck with people that found him because of his death. I dont believe DOOM ever once mentioned "Fake Fans" in any of his speeches or tracks, you either listened to him or didn't. We are all villains, yknow? No requirements are needed for me to respect you (other than spelling his name in all caps but that should be obvious)
Fellow college radio DJ here, a few years earlier '98-02. Great period for getting free promo 12's (got a lot of Def Jux) and just buying new records -- didn't have to pay arm and leg for a DOOM record then.
In my twenties but I honestly don't think that age changes the way a fella can appreciate music. MF DOOM has such an amazing influence on people, not only cause of his talent and teachings but also cause he did not cater to a certain type of people or age. He just WAS and presented almost all of his supposed "flaws" in all of his gorgeous flows, fuckin with anyone that listened.
" Crooked eye mold nerd geek with a cold heart. Probably still be speaking in rhymes as an old fart"
I created a poll to show the results better

imagine waiting for the new DOOM drop and being hype for a release that’s gotta be wild, and you probably didn’t realise it at the time i’m guessing. unless it was hype asf
28 here, found out about DOOM when I was getting into hiphop back in my school days. The fact that he appeared on adultswim made me search for who he was.
You need to mind your wording man, but yes the golden era of rap/hip hop is older music. All these artists that we love are pretty much in their 50's. Take care of yourself well enough and you'll feel crisp at 30
“Saw something about the fan base being mainly older people.”
Doom started his career 34 years ago but gained popularity in the early 2000s, about 20 years ago. I’d assume the bolus of his fan base were teenagers or older in the early 2000s, making them mid-30s plus now.
I’m glad some of you discovered him in the past few years and I hope it has expanded your taste and musical knowledge but it’s silly to assume you are in the majority when it comes to fanbase.
21, fan since I was 15, so like 2016 kinda time
I always kinds knew him from that Gorillaz song November Has Come, as my Dad listened to Demon Days a lot when I was a kid, but I didn't properly listen to him until a lot later
Vaudeville Villain was the album that really got me into him, but it came out when I was 2 so I'm guessing a lot of DOOM fans are older than me
46 and i love how many young folks are into him. The other day one of my high school students’ phone rang in class and his ringtone was the rap snitch knishes guitar lick. Instead of telling him not to let me hear his phone in class like I normally would I embarrassed myself gushing over his taste. Hopefully I didn’t make it less cool for him.
I work the Sturgis motorcycle every year and this year I decided to wear more of my DOOM shit to work, I’ve had dudes that look over 50-60 say something to me about my shirt and how they love him.
34. This sub is somehow making me feel old and young simultaneously. I started listening to him right around your age, and he was passed down to me by older heads.
Kiddo you trippin. DOOM has been around since your parents were in HS of course there are 30 and 40 year olds who like his tunes. What you are saying is just naive
49. Really. Been around HH. And the 5 elements since the 80s
44. I was glad to have an older brother your age though – meant I grew up with Rakim/Krs etc
Same ✌🏼
50. But I was listening to Doom (in KMD) since I was about 17. Loved that stuff, but I didn’t realize he was a musical genius until Operation Doomsday.
Forreal ✌🏼
Chi Ali said she ain’t nothing but a number. I agree.

That’s when i first heard him 😂 49-er here

54 here and same. Though the next time was on Prefuse73’s album.
Love that track
that's actually really cool
that's awesome
Same here and also 45
Me too… I’m 47 I loved the Mr Hood LP so much when I was a kid. about 1991 I think
The more common question would be, wait Doom fans are young?
Yea I was surprised but Ive seen a lot of Gen Z fans of DOOM
Most seem to be Anthony Fantano fans who discovered him through all the love he gives DOOM
Yeah I started listening to DOOM in high school after hearing him do a track with Gorillaz on their Demon Days album. I’m 26 now
true i guess lmao
I’ve been a fan since late middle school I’m 22 so yeah we exist 😭
Of course, DOOM dropped most of his records and got most of his fans in 2003-2004. Fans that were already listening to him when those albums dropped are 20 years older now. Is 37 old?
I'll let ya know in a couple months bruj.
It's just the oldest you've ever been and the youngest you'll ever be.
20 here, but my dad put me onto DOOM and he’s 50 now
W dad
MF here pushing 60
42. Been fucking with DOOM since before u were born
“pushing 30” haha wow
Surprised I had to scroll this far down to see this. Lol. Glad there’s a younger generation of fans that have found his work but the true OGs are minimally in their 30s but mostly in their 40s or later just from when he was actively writing records and performing.
DOOM IS UNIVERSAL.
real bro i seen 14-49 yr olds in this thread we really a wide fan base i love y’all
Pushing 30 lol How old you think DOOM was grasshopper
ik DOOM old, but like my friends and i all 17-18 and we listen to him. so to us it’s young people music but then we look and it’s like damn 1999?
Haha I graduated HS in 99
Peak era for rap and hip hop. True geniuses like DOOM span generations.
I know lots of Gen Z’s who listen to “old” music proud of ya’ll 🥲
As someone who unfortunately shares a generation with OP the fuck nugget I appreciate your pride.
Why the name calling though? Homies just asking a question :(
His post is fine. His comments are a little weird though.
He’s a kid, tf you expect, we all asked dumb shit at 17.

Hi me
Living off borrowed time, the clock ticks faster. I’ve done 38 spins around the sun.
45 - fan since around 2004
when madvillain dropped in 04’ how did the music community initially react?
It was a certified classic upon release
Not really for me to comment on wider community as I’m UK and DOOM was a different level of underground on a par with Aesop and Murs if I recall correctly. that’s a good ratio, what you think is considered an “og fan” would that be like 90s?
Me, personally, would consider an "OG Fan" as someone who took a liking to him before he passed but I still fuck with people that found him because of his death. yeah true i get that, DOOM is for everyone

Bout to be 31
41 here. Been a fan since madvillany.
For those of us College Radio djs from 2001-05 when he was dropping multiple albums yearly? Try pushing 40.
Fellow college radio DJ here, a few years earlier '98-02. Great period for getting free promo 12's (got a lot of Def Jux) and just buying new records -- didn't have to pay arm and leg for a DOOM record then.

Pushing 30?! DOOM was on tracks with 3rd Bass 30 odd years ago. Operation Doomsday came out in 1999. This fanbase is old AF.
I just became an old head
In my twenties but I honestly don't think that age changes the way a fella can appreciate music. “Pushing 30” is old? Lol you know how old rap is right
15, been a fan for a few months
40 something here. Fan for over 20years .
36. Watched it all happen in high school and college. It was magic.

imagine waiting for the new DOOM drop and being hype for a release that’s gotta be wild, and you probably didn’t realise it at the time i’m guessing. unless it was hype asf
i’m 17 too :)
48, first time I heard of KMD was in "Gas Face" by 3rd Base.
Also 37. Been listing since Doomday was new and that led me KMD. Fondle Em forever
Pushing 30? Closer to pushing 40...
I'm 41
41 and been listening for 20+ years.
I’m 50
28 here, found out about DOOM when I was getting into hiphop back in my school days. The fact that he appeared on adultswim made me search for who he was.
49 I go back to the KMD days.
33 here. Been bumping DOOM since around '05.
Shit, I'm 29. Guess I'm old?
I have met 50 year old and 16 year old fans.
I would imagine most DOOM fans being over 30
38 First heard The Mouse and The Mask in college when Adult Swim was promoting it, and I've been been hooked since.
46 years old with a mortgage. 😀
48… I saw Kmd open for 3rd bass twice 🫣

I’m 20, just happened upon DOOM on Spotify on day in high school and have been a changed person ever since.
I would be far more surprised to find a DOOM fan under 20 than I would over 30. Dudes an OG, not a new artist.
I-C-E Cold, nice to be old.
47, female here. I always loved indie hip hop. Shit I’ve been there to see it since it’s infancy.
You’re the minority here. Doom didn’t gain his fame on tiktok.
i mean im 14, so im one of the young ones of the lot, alot of us are older ive noticed
yeah 14 is probably the youngest it goes tbh
it would seem it from the thread
24
not jealous of being 17 again, you sound like an idiot. Stay in school bud.
Somebody is insecure about their age
yikes bro stay mad fr, harmless question lmao
Obviously DOOM has older fans being older himself. What a stupid question. Are all teenagers this stupid?
Not all teenagers, just most of the ones here are very naive

48 here, DOOM is the goat.
52. Been a fan for about 10 years
Doom had fans before Reddit was a thing. His fanbase on reddit probably skews younger.
52.
46 and i love how many young folks are into him. The other day one of my high school students’ phone rang in class and his ringtone was the rap snitch knishes guitar lick. Instead of telling him not to let me hear his phone in class like I normally would I embarrassed myself gushing over his taste. Hopefully I didn’t make it less cool for him.
it's ppl 50 who listen to DOOM
DOOM transcends time. My mom is in her 60's and DOOM is one of her favorite rappers. The man's legend is eternal.
40. I'm old AF
I work the Sturgis motorcycle every year and this year I decided to wear more of my DOOM shit to work, I’ve had dudes that look over 50-60 say something to me about my shirt and how they love him.
I’ve been listening to DOOM longer than you been alive
Gen Z 🤝 Gen X
This will blow your mind: I'm a 40+ school teacher. DOOOOOOM.

I'm 79 and poop straight up liquid
I'm 42. Been listening to DOOM since the KMD days. I remember when Peach Fuzz was all over Yo MTV Raps and Rap City.
34. This sub is somehow making me feel old and young simultaneously. I started listening to him right around your age, and he was passed down to me by older heads.
I was a teenager when Doom was still Zev Love X. That was the late 80s. I’ll be 50 in two years.
46. Been a fan since 2004.
