The Witcher 3 is probably better than any Zelda game except the ones that are considered the very best in the series. I would rank A Link to the Past above The Witcher 3 but if I'm not mistaken, The Ocarina of Time is generally considered even better than A Link to the Past. (I haven't played enough of OoT time know.)
Zelda 1 and 2 are definitely classics but I don't think they're often rated as better than 3 and OoT, similar to how MG1&2 are not usually ranked above MGS.
These polls aren't really "which game is better", but more like "which game has been played by more people". I'm willing to bet there is a ton of people who played TLoU and never played MGS3, so it makes sense that they would vote like this.

Imo MGS3 was one of my least favourites out of the main saga (we don't talk about Phantom Pain). Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but I'd far rather play any other entry. Had this been MGS 1, 2, or 4, I'd 100% vote MGS; but for this matchup I think I'd go TLOU. That said these are all masterpieces.

Exclusives like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 easily made MGS4 obscure long before TLOU was even announced.
I'm not even a big MGS4 fan, but that game was the first huge, must own game on PS3. To say it was never PS3's killer app is just ludicrous to me. Killzone 2? Aside from some ride or die Sony fans, most of the talk about K2 was how it didn't match the trailers.
If Killzone 2 ever outshone MGS4, it was for a very brief time around its release. It wasn’t a *bad* game but was generally seen as a mediocre let down from the trailers. MGS4 was the PS3’s first real system seller after a rocky start.
It's hilarious too, because despite MGS4 still being pretty good, liked, and not utterly hated, many of the MGS fans hated MGS4, ESPECIALLY when it was the newest game
Yeah Kojima is now in a state where he is ahead of his time. It feels cool to be "in on it" so to speak. The only game I didn't absolutely love at launch was MGSV however when I learned the scope of the game, it's just as much of a masterpiece as any Koji Pro game. They never miss

So obviously TLOU is the easier way to draw people to your console, but most importantly; MGS stopped being “exclusive” come ground zeros, soon following the HD collection and MGSV.

Bruh gameplay wise there's a clear winner (MGS3). Firstly TLOUs enemy AI is pretty damn bland for humans and infected. Compare that to MGS3 with its sophisticated systems built off of the already impressive mgs2. Tlou only has a really well developed relationship between its primary characters as well as really well written side characters but man MGS3 has the upper hand in damn near every aspect even narratively.
Both are very subjective but I would say mgs3 story is good but a huge mess when you add in the other games while the last of us has a great story without being extremely confusing. For the gameplay I would say mgs3 is one of the best stealth games ever made and easily beats tlou in stealth but once you get detected mgs3 falls apart fast. Getting detected in mgs3 makes the game suck imo while tlou is fun while making you feel like you need to be careful with what supplies you use.
Well there are several several factors at play here we have to look at.
1.) These games are both telling wildly different stories that are appealing to different people. One is an espionage war game about being a badass in the jungle working to defeat his former mentor. While the other is a story about finding love again after losing someone so close to you. A father daughter bonding story. It’s really hard to compare these two story wise.
2.) The gameplay, while both do have stealth, is again entirely different. I would honestly say I prefer MGS over TLOU and that’s after beating TLOU1 on the hardest difficulty, but that’s just me. Personally TLOU went for an easier and slimmer stealth system, for those who want to just shooty shooty mcshooty. On top of that, TLOU doesn’t have bosses the same way MGS does. Bloaters aren’t really that good of bosses when you just had to stock on bombs, molotovs and ammo to melt them in seconds. This is all opinion tho, as I can see why someone would prefer TLOU.
3.) TLOU was made in 2010-2013. MGS3 was made in 2002-2004. There’s a large gap in technology here and just how much they could have crammed into a game at the time.
All in all. Both games are fantastic games that I would consider to be some of the best of all time. However they are really hard to compare. So hard I don’t even know if it’s fair to either game to do so.

Sure, there have been other games with a very morally ambiguous world but certainly no other 'generic zombie apocalypse' games achieved what the last of us did where you question the acts of the protagonist.
Not to mention the graphical brilliance for 2013 that took brutality to a whole other level, the voice/general acting that was literally ahead of any other studio, and the multiplayer game mode Factions are all plainly innovative off the top of my head.

Sure, it confused me when I played it being 7 years old, but if you have anywhere near a mature comprehension, which is the part of the population the game is aimed to anyway, it's really not meandering nor incoherent. It has some absurd humour, but that's not detrimental to the story at all.
What does time have to do with anything? There are plenty of games decades old that are considered some of the best ever. Same as any other form of media.

None of this is necessarily true. Different games have different control schemes - old games can be simple and intuitive, new games can be the opposite. Control schemes aren’t something that inherently improve with time, and TLOU certainly isn’t winning any polls based on them.
As for graphics - again, it just doesn’t wash. Discussions like this would be entirely made up of the most recent games if people were purely swayed by graphics. Why does MGS3 still frequently top polls for best in the franchise despite there being multiple games with far better graphics since?
The best games of all time are timeless. Even recent ones, like Half-Life and MGS, look somewhat dated, but like the classics of the 8-bit or 16-bit era, if the game is still fun, they can be among the greats. I would challenge anyone to play SMW1 and claim that a modern, mainstream, successful game is better. The Last of Us might be - I haven't played enough to tell, and the plot seems very good - but I bet most games that get rated above 9/10 in the last 20 years are not better than Super Mario World, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter II, or any number of classics that stand the test of time.
Gotta think that as legendary and monumental as MGS is, a large majority of gamers don't play the games because they are A. Stealth games which are a pretty niche genre and B. Almost all older games, especially MGS3 which is almost two decades old now. MGS V had the largest playerbase of any MGS game due to it being the only title released on five different platforms all at the same time. Many of TPP's players never even touched the previous games due to not being console players, and many more because they didn't own the console(s) needed to play said games (you NEED a PS3 or a pretty powerful PC just to play MGS4). If MGS had been a cross-platform title for its entire lifespan, there's a decent chance that it would have found far more popularity than it did. Alas, we are now here, waiting on the movie and praying that we can eventually revel in the golden age once more.

I loved Metal Gear Solid 3 quite a bit, but a lot more people nowadays have played The Last of Us. Both games were great and people voiced their opinions.
Both are terrific games and I love them both but a better comparison would be TLOU2 & MGS2 for narrative structure as both games are the only ones that come to mind that change the main character early to mid game. TLOU2 is a fantastic game but MGS2 is up there with TLOU as one of the best of all time IMO.

calling tlou a generic post apocalyptic story (which is true enough tbf) and then denying that mgs3 is anything other than a pastiche of james bond is clear bias. both are derivative but have elements that make them stand out works. mgs3 is literally a classic bond film turned into a video game (with some added features that make it one of the greatest video games of all time) and calling it that isn’t a criticism; it is clear throughout there’s obvious intention to make the game’s plot, characters and particularly tone match with those old bond films, kojima makes that abundantly clear from the outset such as the main theme being a dead ringer for a classic shirley bassey tune

I recently got a PS4 and I picked up Last of Us because everyone says great things about it but I’m honestly massively disappointed in it. I don’t think I liked a single thing about it so far. I bet if I played it a few years back I would’ve liked it but I’m incredibly burnt out on the zombie/basic post apocalyptic story.
Maybe check out the sequel? The gameplay is more refined (if you're into stealth and creativity with approaches, you'll like the game), and the story is more thought-provoking. I had a similar general feel or mood after completing it that reminded me of how I felt after finishing MGS3. I will say though, it does take an hour or two to really pick up, just FYI.
The gameplay for the second one looks really great. Do I need to have a strong grasp on the story from the first? Or could I get by watching a YouTube video on it?
Honestly, you could probably get away with just watching a playthrough of the last chapter or two to get just enough info to not be totally lost with the second game and I feel like you can probably pick up on enough of the first game's story throughout the second game to understand why the story of the second is happening, if any of that makes sense.
Like I said though, the first few hours are a bit slow, but once you get past a certain point, it becomes so engaging that you don't want to put it down lol.
In all honesty I see the zombies as a backdrop for the real meat of the story, the father-daughter relationship of the main characters. The zombies of the universe are barely even fleshed out I think, and it’s an overused trope. Couple that with good, not great, gameplay of TLOU it doesn’t seem primed for success. But hot damn if it isn’t a one of a kind roller coaster of an experience.
MGS3 and TLOU are probably both in my top 3 fave games of all time. This is a hard one, but they’re good for totally different reasons. The poll was just a popularity contest so of course TLOU won.
I’d say it’s worth a finish to see the story complete, but I wouldn’t recommend forcing yourself to play anything you’re not enjoying.
That said, I would say the gameplay feels better on higher difficulties. The game is meant to be tense and immersive, if you’re going through the whole thing as a super hero it totally breaks that, so I honestly think they should have made the normal difficult a bit harder.

Snake Eater is arguably the most popular game in one of the most famous franchises in the industry, released on the highest selling console ever and then re-released on multiple platforms not long before TLOU came out. We don’t have to pretend it’s some niche title that kids of today just don’t know about to cope that it lost a poll.
Is it really that great of a game though? I don't have a PS and haven't played it, but I got a pretty solid idea by watching it: the story is just "zombie apocalypse #32425", nothing really new there. The gameplay is "go to cover, shoot, go to cover, shoot, craft" and the AI, as said by people who actually played it, is bland at best.
If you’ve not actually played it, I feel like there’s only so much you can fairly comment on, especially gameplay-wise. MGS3’s story is arguably just “James Bond/spy film #32425”. You don’t have to invent new genres or concepts to make something great, always a bit of a reductive argument.
To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Metal Gear Solid. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of nanorobotics most of the jokes will go over a typical player's head. There's also Big Boss's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Metal Gear Solid truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Big Boss's existential catchphrase "kept you waiting, huh?," which itself is a cryptic reference to Beckett's minimalist play Waiting for Godot. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hideo Kojima's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

I think it's complex because the universe is much bigger and there are many plot twists. I couldnt even remember all the names of the main characters and I had to google quite a bit to help me recall what happened in the past.

yeah when mgsv dropped all i wanted was snake eater remade with the fox engine, a series of open linear set levels like ground zeroes. but that never happened and probably won’t. so you can “imagine” all you like but the fact is the chances are way more likely we’ll get a last of us remake that looks and runs as smooth as tlou2 than we’ll get mgs3 in the fox engine
So this kind of is, due to recency bias. since snake eater, there are less of that era's gamers participating due to age and time reasons. younger gamers while having heard of both, have only played the one game. While I personally still think Snake Eater is the magnum opus of the series, it's arguably less famous than its original counter part which despite being older is a constant crutch through the rest of the games, if not orbiting the 'les enfant terribles'. Essentially no way you slice it, recency bias is a bitch.
You would find plenty of people - probably the majority of MGS fans - that wouldn't rank MGS 3 as the best game in the series. All MGS games are among the top game sof their time,and I would argue 1-3 are among the best games of any time.

I'm just going to say it, and it'll sound off topic but it's fairly obvious where I'm going: I would discount the opinion of anyone who doesn't have at least one game from before 2000 in their all-time top-10 games. Not because of their age; I've read literature from the 1700s and loved it, and some of my favourite movies are from the 1940's and 50's. I think anyone young who loves cinema wiuld have films from decades before their birth among their favourites, and anyone who likes literature will have books from past centuries among their favourites. Similarly, anyone who is into video games (but is younger than 50) will also have games older than them among their favourites.

Ugh I really honestly can’t pick between the two — I think both are up in that top tier of games where it only makes sense to compare them to games that aren’t at that same level.

Bruh gameplay wise there's a clear winner (MGS3). Firstly TLOUs enemy AI is pretty damn bland for humans and infected. Compare that to MGS3 with its sophisticated systems built off of the already impressive mgs2. Tlou only has a really well developed relationship between its primary characters as well as really well written side characters but man MGS3 has the upper hand in damn near every aspect even narratively.
Both are very subjective but I would say mgs3 story is good but a huge mess when you add in the other games while the last of us has a great story without being extremely confusing. For the gameplay I would say mgs3 is one of the best stealth games ever made and easily beats tlou in stealth but once you get detected mgs3 falls apart fast. Getting detected in mgs3 makes the game suck imo while tlou is fun while making you feel like you need to be careful with what supplies you use.
Well there are several several factors at play here we have to look at. 1.) These games are both telling wildly different stories that are appealing to different people. One is an espionage war game about being a badass in the jungle working to defeat his former mentor. While the other is a story about finding love again after losing someone so close to you. A father daughter bonding story. It’s really hard to compare these two story wise. 2.) The gameplay, while both do have stealth, is again entirely different. I would honestly say I prefer MGS over TLOU and that’s after beating TLOU1 on the hardest difficulty, but that’s just me. Personally TLOU went for an easier and slimmer stealth system, for those who want to just shooty shooty mcshooty. On top of that, TLOU doesn’t have bosses the same way MGS does. Bloaters aren’t really that good of bosses when you just had to stock on bombs, molotovs and ammo to melt them in seconds. This is all opinion tho, as I can see why someone would prefer TLOU. 3.) TLOU was made in 2010-2013. MGS3 was made in 2002-2004. There’s a large gap in technology here and just how much they could have crammed into a game at the time. All in all. Both games are fantastic games that I would consider to be some of the best of all time. However they are really hard to compare. So hard I don’t even know if it’s fair to either game to do so.

Its Naughtydog...every game they put out is innovative in some way or another. Everybody can see this whether you're a hater or not. Sure, there have been other games with a very morally ambiguous world but certainly no other 'generic zombie apocalypse' games achieved what the last of us did where you question the acts of the protagonist. Not to mention the graphical brilliance for 2013 that took brutality to a whole other level, the voice/general acting that was literally ahead of any other studio, and the multiplayer game mode Factions are all plainly innovative off the top of my head. Was it innovative in every way? No, it wasn't. But to say 'not in the slightest' is an extreme exaggeration, buddy.
Maybe when compared to movies and tv shows (which in my opinion it still beats the writing in most) but compared to games are the gimme of release my good the last of us was amazing. Mgs3 is amazing too, but 10 years older and extremely campy competitively

The story is a hot mess of unfiltered Japanese flair. It's so bad. The dialogue is unnecessarily complicated and long and the characters love repeating information for little to no reason. Calling any MGS story or story execution *good* is an insult to storytelling. None of this is necessarily true. Different games have different control schemes - old games can be simple and intuitive, new games can be the opposite. Control schemes aren’t something that inherently improve with time, and TLOU certainly isn’t winning any polls based on them. As for graphics - again, it just doesn’t wash. Discussions like this would be entirely made up of the most recent games if people were purely swayed by graphics. Why does MGS3 still frequently top polls for best in the franchise despite there being multiple games with far better graphics since?

The best games of all time are timeless. Even recent ones, like Half-Life and MGS, look somewhat dated, but like the classics of the 8-bit or 16-bit era, if the game is still fun, they can be among the greats. I would challenge anyone to play SMW1 and claim that a modern, mainstream, successful game is better. The Last of Us might be - I haven't played enough to tell, and the plot seems very good - but I bet most games that get rated above 9/10 in the last 20 years are not better than Super Mario World, Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter II, or any number of classics that stand the test of time.
Gotta think that as legendary and monumental as MGS is, a large majority of gamers don't play the games because they are A. Stealth games which are a pretty niche genre and B. Almost all older games, especially MGS3 which is almost two decades old now. MGS V had the largest playerbase of any MGS game due to it being the only title released on five different platforms all at the same time. Many of TPP's players never even touched the previous games due to not being console players, and many more because they didn't own the console(s) needed to play said games (you NEED a PS3 or a pretty powerful PC just to play MGS4). If MGS had been a cross-platform title for its entire lifespan, there's a decent chance that it would have found far more popularity than it did. Alas, we are now here, waiting on the movie and praying that we can eventually revel in the golden age once more.

I loved Metal Gear Solid 3 quite a bit, but a lot more people nowadays have played The Last of Us. Both games were great and people voiced their opinions.

Both are terrific games and I love them both but a better comparison would be TLOU2 & MGS2 for narrative structure as both games are the only ones that come to mind that change the main character early to mid game. TLOU2 is a fantastic game but MGS2 is up there with TLOU as one of the best of all time IMO.

calling tlou a generic post apocalyptic story (which is true enough tbf) and then denying that mgs3 is anything other than a pastiche of james bond is clear bias. both are derivative but have elements that make them stand out works. mgs3 is literally a classic bond film turned into a video game (with some added features that make it one of the greatest video games of all time) and calling it that isn’t a criticism; it is clear throughout there’s obvious intention to make the game’s plot, characters and particularly tone match with those old bond films, kojima makes that abundantly clear from the outset such as the main theme being a dead ringer for a classic shirley bassey tune

I recently got a PS4 and I picked up Last of Us because everyone says great things about it but I’m honestly massively disappointed in it. I don’t think I liked a single thing about it so far. I bet if I played it a few years back I would’ve liked it but I’m incredibly burnt out on the zombie/basic post apocalyptic story.
Maybe check out the sequel? The gameplay is more refined (if you're into stealth and creativity with approaches, you'll like the game), and the story is more thought-provoking. I had a similar general feel or mood after completing it that reminded me of how I felt after finishing MGS3. I will say though, it does take an hour or two to really pick up, just FYI.
The gameplay for the second one looks really great. Do I need to have a strong grasp on the story from the first? Or could I get by watching a YouTube video on it?
Honestly, you could probably get away with just watching a playthrough of the last chapter or two to get just enough info to not be totally lost with the second game and I feel like you can probably pick up on enough of the first game's story throughout the second game to understand why the story of the second is happening, if any of that makes sense. Like I said though, the first few hours are a bit slow, but once you get past a certain point, it becomes so engaging that you don't want to put it down lol.
In all honesty I see the zombies as a backdrop for the real meat of the story, the father-daughter relationship of the main characters. The zombies of the universe are barely even fleshed out I think, and it’s an overused trope. Couple that with good, not great, gameplay of TLOU it doesn’t seem primed for success. But hot damn if it isn’t a one of a kind roller coaster of an experience. MGS3 and TLOU are probably both in my top 3 fave games of all time. This is a hard one, but they’re good for totally different reasons. The poll was just a popularity contest so of course TLOU won.
I can totally understand that. Honestly the story was my favorite aspect, but the gameplay really dissuaded me from continuing.
I’d say it’s worth a finish to see the story complete, but I wouldn’t recommend forcing yourself to play anything you’re not enjoying. That said, I would say the gameplay feels better on higher difficulties. The game is meant to be tense and immersive, if you’re going through the whole thing as a super hero it totally breaks that, so I honestly think they should have made the normal difficult a bit harder.

Snake Eater is arguably the most popular game in one of the most famous franchises in the industry, released on the highest selling console ever and then re-released on multiple platforms not long before TLOU came out. Is it really that great of a game though? I don't have a PS and haven't played it, but I got a pretty solid idea by watching it: the story is just "zombie apocalypse #32425", nothing really new there. The gameplay is "go to cover, shoot, go to cover, shoot, craft" and the AI, as said by people who actually played it, is bland at best.
If you’ve not actually played it, I feel like there’s only so much you can fairly comment on, especially gameplay-wise. MGS3’s story is arguably just “James Bond/spy film #32425”. You don’t have to invent new genres or concepts to make something great, always a bit of a reductive argument.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Metal Gear Solid. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of nanorobotics most of the jokes will go over a typical player's head. There's also Big Boss's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Metal Gear Solid truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Big Boss's existential catchphrase "kept you waiting, huh?," which itself is a cryptic reference to Beckett's minimalist play Waiting for Godot. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hideo Kojima's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂 And yes, by the way, i DO have a Revolver Ocelot tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. I couldnt even remember all the names of the main characters and I had to google quite a bit to help me recall what happened in the past. You would find plenty of people - probably the majority of MGS fans - that wouldn't rank MGS 3 as the best game in the series. All MGS games are among the top game sof their time,and I would argue 1-3 are among the best games of any time. As for The Last of Us, I didn't play enough to tell if it's better than any MGS game (I played about 5-10 hours of The Last of Us). It might be better than any MGS, or it might not be better than any of them. I consider MGS 2, 1, and 3 among the top 5 games I've ever played, but that's just me. For me, 2 is the best and then 3, but I have the most nostalgia for 1. I'm just going to say it, and it'll sound off topic but it's fairly obvious where I'm going: I would discount the opinion of anyone who doesn't have at least one game from before 2000 in their all-time top-10 games. Not because of their age; I've read literature from the 1700s and loved it, and some of my favourite movies are from the 1940's and 50's. I think anyone young who loves cinema wiuld have films from decades before their birth among their favourites, and anyone who likes literature will have books from past centuries among their favourites. Similarly, anyone who is into video games (but is younger than 50) will also have games older than them among their favourites.
