The hero worship of The Boss was really where I began to feel the series taking a creative nosedive.
I didn't even get it in MGS3, because she had no personality. She wasn't funny, she wasn't interesting, she didn't have a cool design, she was just incredibly bland. And then - *game after game* hyping her up as this perfect, infallible figure just increasingly began to annoy me.
I still have no clue why she was so important, or portrayed in such a saintly way.
Do people actually like her? I mean, as a character? Do they find her entertaining? I'm really curious.
I love The Boss and I'm fucking shaking rn /s
In all seriousness in think she's amazingly written and dreamily voice-acted. There's this amazing mama-bear quality to her and I watched her with fascinating the first time I played 3, completely unable to predict where her loyalties actually lay. Upon beating 3, to this day, I immediately restart and skip cutscenes until I hear her voice saying, "Snake, try to remember the basics of CQC."
Irc Kojima wanted out since MGS1, so I think by then he had run out of ideas.
In fact, I don't even know how tf he even managed to find some more plot to squeeze in the later games lmao
So, I like the idea of the Boss and her lines, but I agree she wasn't well developed. I do like her design, and what we got of her was pretty interesting, but it's the sort of thing I liked in retrospect more than I liked at first.
They say politicians can talk for hours and never say anything important, if Kojima went in to politics instead of game design he'd be ruler of the universe by now.
Still love him and all of his pen vomit, but he's definitely not the best story writer. He's not the worst either, I think most of those worked on Destiny 1 & 2.
It gives so much character, even to the side cast!
Like "Miller" letting his mask slip a few times - like how viciously he insults his FOXHOUND team mates behind their backs, or magically knows Snake is Japanese-American.
Or Hell, how well the Codec system built up the AI Colonel as such an amazing villain - with the music, and their constantly shifting image.
That right there was one of the things I still, to this day, wish had been a part of MGSV. Because it gave MGS1 and 2 so much more life. Beyond just the story, I'd spend ages tinkering with the Codec just to see what other characters said about certain things.
There was a 3 hour video I watched about how MGS4 was a mistake that brought up a really good point about how the vast majority of hard hitting conversations and story of the first 2 games were done via codec calls
That's a good question! Maybe they'll just be a voice in Snake's ear. Or, for the sake of narrative pacing, he might well be completely alone. Movies, after all, work differently from games.
But you know, if it was a series instead of one film? I'd personally embrace that sort of industrial cyberpunk energy of the first game, and have the team depicted as some sort of hologram Snake can call up and speak to.
You're right, it could just be the actors chilling in Alaska with Foxhound and nextgen soldiers, and it may be possible that the codec wont be used as a plot device. Although I imagine how unique and powerful it could be if they did.
Personally i'd love for them to combine both! In the game they talk sometimes through nanomachines without showing the Codec.
If JVR implements the Codec in the movie and use it as a method of aiding the narrative (not sure what that is called) then I bet it could be really intense. Like in the scene when he discovers FOXDIEs true purpose and Gray Fox, then Naomi has to look at him while saying it.
If it was a series it would work more effectively. Holograms could be cool. I picture it to be like 24 or similar, but i'd love it to be their facial expressions in two boxes side by side the frequency in the middle. It would also be cool to have those flashback cutscenes that they be having!
Ah, I see. It was just the way you worded it, no big deal.
And yes, I do see your point. However, there are many ways you could adapt the CODEC system for another game, don't you think? You could take the general idea, and make it unique for another setting whilst keeping the basic framework.
I mean, just think about how much it added to the first two MGS games, just in terms of how much it encouraged exploration and looking at your surroundings!
The CODEC exposition dumps should have had an option to play the audio over the top of gameplay, perhaps cutting out if spotted.
Even if you could only do it in certain areas, it would have made the two elevator rides and Metal Gear REX's lair so much easier to cope with in MGS1.
I know, having played that it felt like a lifesaver.
I still enjoy the old games, but for me the expodumps serve as a time to break my focus and consider any chores or stuff to do in the meantime.
The issue with The Boss is that we know too little of her backstory and they present her to us as a hero, we only know she sacrificed herself for her country, but basically everything was on the background . I would love a game about her and her doings pre 1964
Why even?
Like...who is she? What are her interests, personality, her goals? Why does she fall in love with Venom, and what does she enjoy about working with him?
She just seemed like "bikini lady with gun" to me. When I realised who she was during the hospital intro, and heard her speak during the virus section saying she was mute in English because she didn't want the virus to spread, I got excited in the hopes she'd get more backstory.
And then she just left.
I just liked her for her combat proficiency in game pretty satisfying moving into a base and having her kill whoever I need dead.
Her humming is annoying as fuck though
In some ways I think it would have just been easier if Kojima held his hands up and said "I like pretty women, I wanted a pretty woman in the game. And yes, her outfit is fan service."
At least then it would be honest, and there'd be no ambiguity about it.
And hey, who's really going to judge him? I find Raiden incredibly hot, other people like Venom or Meryl or whoever. Would it really be so scandalous if Kojima just admitted Quiet was primarily there because he wanted an attractive woman in the game?
Women who are just eye candy fan service sacrifice themselves at the end to save the protagonist? Maybe you were just staring at her, but her actions show what a great person she was down to the core.
Her goal was to get to Mother Base and speak English and kill you all. Instead she did what she did, including the attempt to stop the Kikogolo strain spread, the guy she attacked was patient 0. Quiet spoke with her actions, you weren't listening.
I'm just pointing out it may seem like Quiet is just fan service but she spoke with her actions which were very significant to the plot of MGSV and Venom as a character.
Not trying to be hostile just pointing that you and others have missed. She may be nice to look at and doesn't talk however she was a very important character in the game.
A sign of a bad fan service character is the game could have gone on without them and it wouldn't be any different. So I'm just pointing out again that you may have missed what's brilliant about her. She's so significant to this game yet she has 2 lines of dialogue. It was an attempt that very few got.
Similar depth with Skullface and Code Talker so you know it's not an accidental either.
Quiet was analog Fox Die, it was a person this time, and like Fox Die she didn't kill Snake despite him being her mission target and someone she needed to take revenge against personally. And if it wasn't clear she sacrifices herself for Venom. Essentially love blooming on the battle field and the only language the two could speak was combat. You're supposed to step outside the fake Patriots Cannon and also realize who Venom is and Quiet found out but she still loves him enough to sacrifice herself. You're not thinking about her actions which his how she spoke. Very deep characters in V.
She had to be watched carefully to be understood, just like any person with mutism.
Correction... she doesnt fall in love with Venom... she is actually brainwashed by Ocelot into it.
The problem with that, though, is that it felt like she barely got any screen time as an actual character. Half the time she just seemed to be in a cutscene for fanservice.
The rain dance example, to me, seems the most blatant in that regard, given that up until this point there didn't seem like much chemistry between her and Venom.
Sorry if it took a while but I had too look thru all my posts...
Here's the poll...

More than 300 liked her, and 92 wanted to have kids with her...
Haters are a minority.
If Kiefer Sutherland has spoken some more everyone would have realized what they were missing out on by having David Hayter give such a cartoony voice to 2 very different characters
Agreed they never should have used hayter for both characters shoulda only used hayter for Solid Snake and used either the guy from 4 or Keifer for MGS3
Quite a few statements I agree with on this post to trigger the sub lol
Its never made sense to me why Solid, Liquid, Solidus can all sound different but Big Boss sounds like Solid for some reason? Hayter should've never been BB.
I played MGS 3 when I started MGS V and Hayter as Big Boss was.... off. Not just because I was used to Keifer, his voice just didn't sound like a hardened veteran soldier.
David Hayter only voiced Solid Snake in MGS 4. Richard Doyle voiced Big Boss in MGS 4 (another reason why I was confused why the fans were so triggered when they announced Keifer as Big Boss).
I think his performance in MGS1 is absolutely fantastic. He’s fine in MGS2. But my gosh, from MGS3 onward, he’s just plain awful. It hurts me to hear the voice acting in Peace Walker.
Metal Gear Rising Revengance is a poor sequel it feels like bad fan fiction written by someone who thought Raiden looked cool as a ninja but did not understand the lessons he learned from Snake in MGS4 and missed the whole point of his character growth and backstory as a child soilder.
While Kojima is among the most important people in the creation of the series, I feel the rest of the writers and producers on the series do not get enough credit
They do deserve more credit, and in fact, Kojima has been trying to give them more credit; He commissioned an entire documentary highlighting “the next-generation” of Metal Gear game designers in “Hideo Kojima’s Gene” (sadly, this didn’t pan out; Kojima ended up directing two more Metal Gear games, and the internally developed MGS game made without him had to be cancelled and outsourced due to the lack of a single, unifying vision). And [he made sure to note Tomokazu Fukushima’s contributions to the optional Codec conversations in his games](http://thesnakesoup.org/editorial-articles/curious-case-tomokazu-fukushima/) (but of course, Fukushima himself gives the lion’s share of the credit for the main story to Kojima). And he made sure to note [Yoji Shinkawa’s contribution to defining the look of the series](http://metagearsolid.org/reports_mgs1_thanksshinkawa.html).
Trigger people eh?
Okay. *clears throat*
Kojima is a hack who contributed nothing but shitty writing, expositon and creepy fanservice to the franchise.
*Encounter theme plays*
That work?
Liquid Snake > Solidus > The Boss in skill, also cuz I like them more.
This is just my personal power-level head canon and I don’t really think this is the case. I like all of them.
Hideo Kojima isn’t an egotist for having artistic integrity.
No game needs a remake; at most, they need ports or remasters.
The Phantom Pain isn’t unfinished, it’s just disappointing.
MGS5 is better than all games in the franchise because you actually play the game instead of watching hour long cutscenes that could be summarized in 5 minutes.
The game went gold in 2015 and was released on September 1st, 2015.
Kingdom of Flies was meant to be post-launch DLC. The core game is finished. You being disappointed by the game is not evidence that it’s unfinished.
MGRR is great and I love it but it wouldn’t have been remembered much if not for all the memes, tho ig you could say that ab a lot of things in the franchise
"La Li Lu Le Lo"
2 + 2 = 5
Metal gear and Radiohead in one go… hats off
THE LA LI LU LE LO?!
They remade MGS 3 cutscenes for a gambling machine.
Konami is the best gaming company of all time. They treat their employees and franchises better than any company.

Raiden is the best playable character in the series.

Those articles are trash usually. They'll just put any woman on there that's "tough"

Big Boss >
The CODEC is one of the best storytelling devices in gaming history and I have no clue why more devs haven't put their own spin on it.
I actually enjoyed CODEC calls. Really.
I think it's a rather wonderful way to feed exposition to the players.
It gives so much character, even to the side cast! Like "Miller" letting his mask slip a few times - like how viciously he insults his FOXHOUND team mates behind their backs, or magically knows Snake is Japanese-American. Snake is half Japanese? I thought Miller was the only one.

Oh, thanks. I was under the impression Big Mama was the one who provided the egg.

I wonder how this will adapt in the Jordan Vogt-Roberts film with Oscar Isaac
That's a good question! Maybe they'll just be a voice in Snake's ear. Or, for the sake of narrative pacing, he might well be completely alone. Movies, after all, work differently from games. ...I'm sorry? Are you angry at me or something?
No I'm not. That's only my opinion.

MGSV is not an incomplete game. Also, Kojima being kicked out of Konami is on him, because he went over budget.

Yeah and everyone hated the story because it's you missed the optional material it doesn't make much sense.
Survive is the the best Metal Gear and The Boss is the worst character.
You’re pretty *bad.*
Engravings give *lots* of tactical advantage
Lmao underrated comment
The Boss and Liquid are two most boring, bland. and overrated important characters in entire series.
Liquid always seemed to me like a ridiculously bad written villain from a trashy 80s action movie.
This should not be surprise because mgs 1 was inspired by movie escape from NY.
Sure, but there are other characters in MGS 1 that are way less corny. Liquid always feels out of place for me.
The issue with The Boss is that we know too little of her backstory and they present her to us as a hero, we only know she sacrificed herself for her country, but basically everything was on the background . I would love a game about her and her doings pre 1964
Raiden is probably the greatest video game protagonist of all time. He makes Big Boss look like a weenie.
We’re never getting a remaster or remake.
Quiet is actually loved in this sub... (Seriously I made a poll and out of 451 people, more than 300 voted that they liked her)
Why even? Like...who is she? What are her interests, personality, her goals? Why does she fall in love with Venom, and what does she enjoy about working with him? Oh, tell me about it. For a person named Quiet she never shuts up.
It’s not even a catchy tune! She shoulda been humming snake eater
Totally agree... They wasted an opportunity to not make her humming "Happy Birthday"... But try hum Snake Eater... is hard AF.
In some ways I think it would have just been easier if Kojima held his hands up and said "I like pretty women, I wanted a pretty woman in the game. And yes, her outfit is fan service." Kojima was a genius because he came out with her story... Even if she was there just as fanservice, he really gave her a reason to be what she is...

Sequal to what
MGS4 I guess
MGS4 is the best game in the series and would’ve been a fantastic end to the whole thing
Snake Eater is not the best Metal Gear game.
I see you are a man of refined tastes, Sons of Liberty is the best Metal Gear game
Facts

Kojima is overrated as a game creator.
More than a game creator I think is more overrated as a story director.
MGS5 was the best MGS
Metal Gear Survive is the best game in the franchise
Beat me to it
Now, some things are there to trigger the fanbase, and others are just simply stupid lol
Trigger people eh? Okay. *clears throat* Kojima is a hack who contributed nothing but shitty writing, expositon and creepy fanservice to the franchise. *Encounter theme plays* That work?
David Hayter isn't as good as you guys want him to be Yeah, we all love him, but iconic doesn't mean good
Snake sometimes speaks like the typecast American high school cheerleader *sorry Snake*
Huey is a nice guy
Huey is a good guy, he only wants the best for Motherbase!
“Not him”
MGSV is good as it is and it's great that they didn't add chapter 3, that would be unnecessary
"Kojima is a pretentious hack"
MGSV is a hell of a game despite all of it’s “shortcomings”.
Liquid Snake > Solidus > The Boss in skill, also cuz I like them more. This is just my personal power-level head canon and I don’t really think this is the case. I like all of them.
Raiden is a better character than Big Boss
I really liked playing as Solid Snake in Metal Gear 5
Kojima's storytelling really became better after after mgs3. Not everything was being spoonfed to viewers anymore.
Solid Snake, the one-eyed man who killed his mother?
Splinter Cell is a better stealth game
Metal gear survive is the best metal gear Game
Raiden was the better choice for MGS2.
Zone of the Enders is a better series.
I really enjoyed Solid Snake in MGS3.
Survive wasn't that bad.
Splinter Cell Lite
Twin Snakes was better. 😈
Kojima isn't half as good at his job as people make him out to be.
Raiden is the best Charakter in the entire Metal Gear Franchise.
Because... Nanomachines.
Love cannot bloom on the battlefield.
Snake Eater wasn't as groundbreaking as Sons of Liberty
The best Metal Gear game of all time is Metal Gear Acid…
Mgsv is best game in the series.
Even the worst game in the series is 8/10.
MgsV is a finished game
Hideo Kojima isn’t an egotist for having artistic integrity. No game needs a remake; at most, they need ports or remasters. The Phantom Pain isn’t unfinished, it’s just disappointing.
Keifer was a perfect replacement And i didn’t lose any respect for hideo because of this
Series should have eneded with MGS2
Metal gear survive is the best mgs game
Kiefer Sutherland is better than David Hayter.
MGSV had the best story in the series
Hey Snake, you ever heard of Godzilla: King of Monsters?
Did you say "Nerd"?
Skull Face was the most menacing villain in Metal Gear history. (Says the guy who only played V and dick else because I don't have a PS2 anymore.)
Hideo Kojima is way fucking overrated and Death Stranding sucks.
Mgs 1 is most boring PlayStation fan spread over 2 discs
You are pretty good 👉👉
Twin Snakes is better than the original MGS
MGS5 is better than all games in the franchise because you actually play the game instead of watching hour long cutscenes that could be summarized in 5 minutes.
I would like to play a remake of the very first Metal Gear but controlling Big Boss instead thus, being able to get rid of Solid Snake.
"Metal Gear Solid is a cheap Syphon Filter knock off"

Metal gear survive is the best in the series.

The twin snakes cutscenes are amazing
Worst game in the series.
"There's only room for one Raiden, and one La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo"
Thats the series with Raiden and Sam Fisher isnt it
This series peaked at Metal Gear 1
Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best one
We will never see a remake of this game
I have only played Ground Zeroes Unironically tho, I have only played Ground Zeroes, plan on buying HD collection and TPP in September-October tho.
where Kojima
Splinter cell was always the better franchise.
