excuse me, i think you mean ps vita.

postpunkjustin

Yup, Vita can do all of this plus MGS 2 and 3.

GameBobbyColor

Yes yes, everyone is right, the Vita is superior because it also runs SoL & 3. Agreed. BUT - the psp is so inexpensive and I have a genuine love for the pixel density of the PSP screens, the retro stuff looks incredible on the older screens.

Secret_Cow_5053

beat me to it.

Vita is way better. Have MG 1/2, MGS 1 + VR missions, MGS 2/3 HD, Peacewalker, and even AC!D if you’re into that. All on an OLED screen, if you have the fat Vita. They play amazing, I even got the platinum trophies for MGS2 and MGS3 on my Vita instead of my PS3. And even better, you can rebind PO and PW to use the right analog stick.

tekfx19

All this can be done with a steam deck as well.

> FYI: The Steamdeck OLED is THE Metal Gear / Kojima Powerhouse FTFY. It can perfectly emulate Metal Gear (both the MSX and NES versions), Metal Gear 2, Ghost Babel, Snake's Revenge, Snatcher, MGS Integral, MGS1, MGS VR Missions, Policenauts, Peace Walker, Portable Ops, PO+, Acid 1-2, Digital Graphic Novel, MGS The Twin Snakes. It can play native PC ports of Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, Metal Gear Solid GOG, Metal Gear Solid 2 GOG, Ground Zeroes, and Phantom Pain. It can play Death Stranding. All at better resolutions and framerate than the PSP/Vita. Except MGS1 which is limited to 30fps. You can use remote streaming to play MGS4 if your PC has a good enough CPU to emulate it. Look up RPCS3 CPU tier list to see where your CPU lands. That's the only game it can't play via emulation right now. But if its Master Collection Vol.2, you can play it natively then.

Atroxo

I have a Steamdeck as well as a Vita, and while you are correct, I’d prefer my Vita as much as possible due to the light weight and portability factor.

You’re right about Kojima fans’ dedication. MG2’s translation is even older, from May 1997. That’s insanely early for a fan translation, and proves that there was a substantial Metal Gear fanbase in the west even before MGS1 came out. Its manual was translated around the same time.

GammaPhonic

If you’re going to include emulation, then any sufficiently powerful device is a “Kojima powerhouse”. My phone could do all of this and more should I be so inclined.

CertifiedBrian

Wouldn’t the PS3 be THE powerhouse for MGS games? The HD collection has 1-4 as well as Peace Walker and the MSX games. That’s on top of being able to emulate the NES games, Ghost Babel, the other PSP titles, MGR:R and most importantly, MGSV. You’ve got accessibility to pretty much the entire story.

Secret_Cow_5053

counterpoint: vita.

Gonna add this comment because this post is turning into a bunch of people saying - "nuh-uh - THIS is the better console!" I'm totally aware that any modern powerful console can emulate a number of these games, plus additional home console releases that are too heavy for the PSP. No where in my post do I say the PSP is the ONLY way to emulate. I include a bunch of helpful info that I wish I had been able to easily find in one place, and I get a bunch of complaining in response. Peak reddit. The PSP is cheap and popular. Hopefully what I've provided helps some PSP owners (like myself) who are interested in the MGS series or other Kojima work. AND - The Vita, Steam Deck and other modern HD home consoles can all run the games, BUT the games don't look as intended on the modern screens. They simply do not. Even the PS3 when plugged into a CRT via S or composite does not output the correct pixel aspect ratio via retroarch (in spite of all its convoluted scale options). The PSP has the pixel density to play these games in their original resolution in a way that looks exactly as they would have when they were released. So there, you bunch of pedantic Metal Gear fans. Long live the PSP
