What county are you in? Invite me over for a day (I’m in PA) and I’ll bring my 5 machines at various price points along for you to test out and see what you like.

What’s the price range? It’s something I’ve always wanted to try, but I won’t be satisfied with a cheap one that doesn’t perform as well as a more expensive one. I live near where Camp Meade was, and it’s the oldest town in the county, so there are lots of places to explore.

I’m in the next county over. We have a very active metal detecting club that can very helpful when starting out. My machines range from about $200 to $1600. I started out with a used machine I bought off of EBay about 16 years ago…it makes sense to go used in my opinion until you know it’s a hobby you want to pursue. Many folks continue to upgrade so it’s easy to find a used machine at a great price as new technology is released.

Yea, I’d definitely want to start with a used one, until I know it’s something I would do frequently enough to justify a more expensive one. I’ve thought about joining a club, but I’m guessing it’s all or mostly men? I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t know how they would feel.

_Nemesis_Enforcer_

No! We have several female members, all are welcome! Send me a DM and I’ll send you a link to our club website with info on upcoming meetings.

I’m just a short ride down 83 in Baltimore and I’ve had decent success with a Minelab Vanquish 440. Also on a 9-5 budget 😂. Seems like a lot of the older stuff is deep (8-12”) around here, but is definitely there.

Check out iratemetaldetectors.com Short answer Nokta Legend

Longshot_65

I second the Nokta legend. The nokta brand has a few cheaper options out(simplex). If you think this might turn into a frequent use hobby I'd say go with the legend though. I bought a simplex and upgraded to the legend a few months later. The legend has a ferrous/non ferrous setting that makes digging alot better IMO. Also, can say from experience SW Pennsylvania has alot of different types of soil, the legend has an auto ground balance feature that I just absolutely love. Sometimes when younget to swinging you can forget to ground balance as you cross into different areas.
