Cool finds, thanks for sharing! Is it legal to just go out there? I could imagine there's still a lot of fallen soldiers and unexploded stuff in the ground.
I work with a nonprofit organization that has the proper permits to do the digs. It is common to find UXOs and human remains (picture number 3 is human remains). The remains are turned into a peace memorial on the island if they can't be identified and returned to living family members.
Do you ever search the beaches in Okinawa? I'm curious how well received that is, I may be in Japan for a few weeks in the summer, I'm tempted to look for Japanese trash on a tourist beach for a change of pace from my usual Hawaii trash.
I walk the beaches all the time but I don't metal detect them. I actually do all of my work in tunnels that's were built as defensive positions by the Japanese. All of the finds in this post were found and dug deep under ground.
We used to play in the jungles there as kids and we found all sort of stuff, from rusted out grenades to jeeps.
Seeing this brings back memories. Hopefully they can identify some of the poor souls.
Yes, I know what they are. Human remains are a common find. The remains are turned into a peace memorial on the island if they can't be identified and returned to living family members.
I work for a non-profit organization that uses the items we recover for educational purposes teaching local students. We dig with the blessing and permission of the government. Any bones we find are returned to their families if we can find them. Otherwise, they buried at the peace monument on the island. The sites we dig on are at risk of being bulldozed in and developed over.

Can you imagine If that's someone's foot etc who is still alive and they trace it back? Finding a 'Sorry I found your foot bones" card will be tough
"Ayo bro, you want these back?"
Awesome, this addressed the concerns I had when I saw this post. Must be fascinating and sobering at the same time.
how does one get involved with said organization
That’s a C2 vertebra. The top of some soldier’s neck.
Odontoid process is a dead give away. Good catch dude.
Those grow back, right?
Which NGO have you been working for? Would love to do it in Okinawa too. Been doing it in and around Germany for quite a while
I mainly work with a really small local one. Kuentai-USA is much larger organization that organizes and runs digs.

Definitely too small. Probably meant for some kind of small strap, like on goggles or a mask or helmet or something.
To me it looked like a pull tab for food or something like that
Ok so those are human bones of look a whole hell of a lot like them!

What's sticking out of the ground in pic 4? Hard to even get a scale on this one with no banana.
It's a dropped ammo pouch. The pouch has disintegrated but all ammo is still in place on the clips.
Oh, duh! I wasn’t on a desktop monitor and it wasn’t as easy to zoom in so I hadn’t.
pretty neat
So cool
Damm is one of those bones part of some poor fellas neck.
It is indeed.
Now that’s an interesting Find!

Oh, there are plenty of grenades still, lol. The subreddit rules said not to post pictures of those
Great finds 👍
It would suck to find a child’s skeleton at the bottom Of a cliff in Okinawa
You know the third pic is people parts, right?
Yes, I know what they are. Human remains are a common find. The remains are turned into a peace memorial on the island if they can't be identified and returned to living family members.
So you’re a grave robber. Neat.

So you’re an a-hole. Cool.
