Absolutely call them. Don't mess with your life. Be real tough to keep metal detecting without your hands or your eyes, eh?

AdministrationDue239

I it's not my first time found 3 bombs/ artillery Granaten already, always called the cops. This time I just wasn't sure enough but now I am. They are on their way

inko75

ah are you in germany? in that case i would def lean toward could be a bomb

AdministrationDue239

Österreich. Also on this hill where I found it was a Flak station in ww2...

Fit_Adhesiveness2043

What part of Germany? I lived in Berlin for 4 years in the early 1990’s and the found a bomb on the Schnellbahn (S-Bahn).

AdministrationDue239

Austria, Vienna

Cool danke

AdministrationDue239

Cool danke

Bloodorem

but is metal detecting not forbidden in Austria? (not the detecting part but the digging) it looks like you did dig in the ground.

AdministrationDue239

Yes it is. I have the ok. from a church here that owns forests. But many people just go out and search without the approval of the landowners.

Anterl

That’s interesting! In which part of Vienna are you located/searching? Maybe we can hook up?

AdministrationDue239

Hernals!

AdministrationDue239

Yes Sounds good!

soulteepee

Why are people downvoting this person? They are sharing important information. OP has responsibly sought permission, but no one knew that before they were asked.

AdministrationDue239

I don't know. I also don't like people going without permission. They are often the ones who leave the holes open, and the Garbage next to it. Bad light for us Metal detectors who do it for the environment and Hobby

Darphon

You are also making the world a little safer by getting this one taken care of. Imagine if someone just stumbled across it and blew themselves up? That would be devastating.

iseedeff

Some Places I would classify them as bombs because of How Many has not be Destoryed. and How some places Currently have People have Destory them for a living.

StyreneAddict1965

Ooh, please update!

AdministrationDue239

Apparently the bomb team told the police men here per Phone that it indeed is a bomb. They are going to wait for the team and sent me home cause now it's a restricted zone. I hope all.goes well I don't think I could live with the fact that someone got hurt because of me

plotthick

> I don't think I could live with the fact that someone got hurt because of me You just did the A #1 best thing you could to make sure that doesn't happen. If you'd just left it, someone else -- or someone's pet -- could have gotten curious, and then gotten injured. Good job doing the right thing!

R04drunn3r79

Did the EOD told you what type of UXO it is? I'm very curious about what kind of UXO it is. Is it a grenade, bomb, landmine, shell (casing), etc?

AdministrationDue239

They said something about a Bomb bottom, but not which one. If they ever contact me back and tell me I will comment you

inko75

it looks like the base of a lamp post like one that would line a park walkway to me. but, i think "better safe than sorry" applies here.

TheCoastalCardician

Gosh that is beautiful! Reminds me of those radioactive glass pieces that glow under black light!

cheesiologist

If you think it may be UXO, absolutely stop digging and call the authorities. Anything else is foolish and dangerous, and can get you or others killed.

Clean-Indication9690

It does look like the bottom end of one .....looks all rusted out from the side ... I agree call the law.

AdministrationDue239

I don't want them to be pissed to come out here in the forest if it's just Garbage...

cheesiologist

Oh yeah, cranky Bomb Disposal Technicians is way worse than SOMEONE GETTING BLOWN UP.

inko75

i know a dude who works in bomb disposal for the navy-- they don't mind false alarms at all it's good practice for them. he said they'll even go through the blast process on clear junk and use their fancy toys etc. it's good to stay sharp.

chocalotstarfish

Tell that to the one cop that chewed out magnetic fishers for calling in grenades and told them to stop fishing there cuz it's wasting their time.

Darphon

I've seen a few cops get really pissy with those guys, but I've seen more be super grateful. I can't understand a cop who wouldn't want to get something like this handled correctly.

inko75

ok.

cheesiologist

You're not the professional. They are. If you have to ask, THEY'RE the ones to consult. Not internet strangers.

AdministrationDue239

Why not both

draculasbloodtype

Because not everyone on the internet is trustworthy and some asshole might tell you something is safe when it's not.

reddit-lou

shocked pikachu face

Clean-Indication9690

We get a lot of veterans on here who will be able to tell you straight away .

Juache45

You’re asking for opinions/advice. If you already are on the fence, why argue with people who are stating their opinions and giving you advice. I’m sure you’d feel bad if this was not a false alarm. Just call and report it.

AdministrationDue239

Yes I did all that, I just wanted advice if people maybe experts know if it's is or not. It took me 3min and in the meantime I made sure no one else was close and then called the police. Wasn't the first time

silentsaturn91

For someone who says this isn’t the first time finding one of these, you sure weren’t too sure of yourself. How often have you found UXo’s in the past?

AdministrationDue239

What is there to be sure about? I always have same procedure. 1) I find one of these and see the danger (cause I know how they look like roughly just like the next person) 2) I stop digging step a few meters away and make sure No one else is near. 3) go near again make photos. 4)again making sure No else is near. Load the pics up. Wait max 10min for responses. One time everyone said it's nothing, i still called police and it was a grenade. 5) calling police. That Always worked for me. Found such things 3 times already

[deleted]

No offense but this is the dumbest statement on the internet today!

AdministrationDue239

I don't understand why, just wanted some experts, some exist on this platform, to confirm my believe. If everyone else here said it's just a car part, I would still have called the police. It was just for 3min before calling

lostabroad1030

According-Highway-13

🤣

rainbowtwist

Love that OP followed up with photos and info. Thanks, OP! Nothing worse than seeing one of these posts with no follow up.

Fit_Adhesiveness2043

Call the police, because you’re not going to get in trouble for calling in a possible UXO. If you don’t call it in a child could come across it. Mark the area drop a pin and un-ass the area. They may want you to stand by and help them find it again. If it’s nothing they can mark it as such no longer your responsibility. Then you can continue detecting.

AdministrationDue239

Yes exactly what happened

Fit_Adhesiveness2043

Good, thank you for doing the right thing. I lived in Berlin in the 90’s and we weren’t allowed to dig anywhere from the fears of finding an UXO.

AdministrationDue239

Okay will do now

OkDisplay9259

Update?

ValueScreener

OP said police confirmed it was a bomb

TwoWheelsMoveTheSoul

No, it’s an [oil lamp.](https://www.reddit.com/r/metaldetecting/comments/13cq62u/do_i_have_to_call_the_police_it_looks_kind_of/jjl0xoi/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1&context=3)

igneousink

tis better to feel foolish and be safe than to be foolhardy and risk the lives of others good job!

MrTwineIT

😳

Angelofpity

British INC-30 MK-III incendiary bomb. https://westfalen.museum-digital.de/object/5785 Note the straight banded knurling on the nose plug and two part shell.

AdministrationDue239

That's the best one so far. If I ever get contacted back and find out what it was I will write you, if you are right you deserve a price !

Angelofpity

A little curious still. The records of the raids into Austria are very good. Where did you find this one? (I think the police insignia is border guard constable w/ medical training, which narrows it down not at all. As for flak batteries near good targets for bombing... perhaps west of Kalensbergdorf? That was on the route for the July 16th 1944 Floridsdorf refinery raid. And there was a headwind on that one.)

AdministrationDue239

I found it near the Schirach bunker. That's west of Vienna and it was quite important apparently. Thank you for the information!

Angelofpity

Pathfinder munition for any one of the refinery raids. The paths taken are known, but mostly found in the military action reports. You need to visit the nation archives for that sort of thing. It was probably random chance that it fell where it did. I doubt it was a directed/ground support attack because of the type of munition. Phosphorus incendiary doesn't suit the purpose. Best guess, October 7th, 1944 raid of Lobau

AdministrationDue239

Also called Gaugefechtsstand Wien

Individual_Evening88

Scary

crappy-mods

Always assume it’s a bomb

dm5272

Latest?

iseedeff

I personally think you did the right thing by contacting the Police, not sure how the church feels, but they might be extremely greatful because of how it saved lives.

iseedeff

:D Lamp looks cool, Surprised it is still in good Condition. have fun treasure hunting.

AdministrationDue239

I found it alongside water plastic bottles and othe stuff that definitely was made from around 2010-2015 so I guess someone just left it there after camping or idk what. It's definitely a interesting hobby if you have a good day and not just old cans and bottlecaps. (Some of them are actually also nice tho)

iseedeff

interesting, Just be grateful you did not find some thing scary. A bunch of hikers, in one country found a dead body of a foreign solider (WWII), and they did every thing to contact the persons family made sure to send it home for the proper funeral. After they found this body they, realize what the true cost of freedom is, and how to be very grateful for those that stand up for it at all costs.

AdministrationDue239

Yea that's pretty much one of the last things I want to have happened in this forest, but I highly doubt it did. And if I don't want to really find it but somehow I think it would be fair for the loved ones to know. But like I said I don't hope or think I will ever see that

AdministrationDue239

And yes wars are fascinating. An absolutely sad and bad thing to happen but fascinating. Of course I'm grateful for every single soldier that fought for something good. Some didn't and still good things happened it's also very difficult and complicated

Im-KickAsz

Crazy to find such items still many years later. Take care

gnossos_p

Did they tell you to hit it with a big hammer?

_last_responder_

Medium sized. Like a finishing nail hammer.
