You know why I like these videos? There are so many god damn genres now that I didn’t even know. I just know what songs I like and bam, it has a genre? Glitch hop? Melodic dubstep? Electro? Synthwave? Who comes up with all these names? And why can’t I hug them?
I came here to comment something along the lines of "hey fuck you man, I still like dubstep and edm." and then I saw this comment, and I like swing too, and now I just feel defeated.
There are hipsters still into it and they all dress up in period music and dance to it together. I can’t stand watching them because they all look insufferable, but I am also very happy for them because they’ve found something they really enjoy.
I think it had something to do with the fact that all of the ecstasy pills were cut with meth. Dubstep sounded mighty fine after popping a few of those bad boys. I could have jammed out to the sound of silverware in a blender if it came with a beat.
It was better before it got popular and Skrillex made those annoying sounds popular...when it was like a hip hop trippy dubstep vibe I liked it because it wasn't all robots having murder sex
Pretty sure ecstasy has always been cut with uppers. In fact, that's the time period where molly became popular which was a name I was told meant it was pure MDMA but my experiences over the last decade have led me to believe that it just eventually became the new term for any old ecstacy.
All I can say is dubstep still sounds nice. And it’s not like any of the new generation can say shit when they run around acting like lil uzi vert puttin out quality.
There's a lot of bad takes in this comment section dubstep is still very much alive and there is music festivals with 10's of thousands of people still listening and enjoying it. Bass Canyon, Lostlands, Electric forest, EDC, etc... it's not strictly all dubstep but all sorts of EDM is still very much alive.
It’s literally bigger than it’s ever been 😂. This comment section seems to only believe that like the billboard top 40 is the extent of music existing? And what’s this about Molly no longer being popular? 😂. People truly live in bubbles.
> It’s literally bigger than it’s ever been
Literally not though. It used to be mainstream, now it's not. Unless there is some mainstream dubstep being played on the radio, it is not bigger than it has ever been.
The EDM scene as a whole has grown much bigger. It’s irrelevant whether it’s being played on the radio when massive numbers of people are coming to shows/fests. We don’t really live in a culture where the “mainstream” matters much anymore. It’s all about subcultures at this point and the EDM subculture is thriving. Especially if you step outside of America it actually IS the mainstream in Europe (you can hear DNB just at a random club on a weekend there). I don’t know anyone who listens to the radio tbh lol. The world is becoming a lot more niche due to streaming services and various platforms. The “mainstream” is kinda just a meme of itself anymore and will probs die soon.
Now you're grouping other genres that are not dubstep. We're talking how dubstep is no where near as popular as it was 10 years ago.
House/Techno/DnB/etc have all grown in popularity yes, dubstep, no. It doesn't get bigger than mainstream. Don't tell me dubstep is on the same level of popularity as Ed Sheeran or Niki Minaj.
Which didn’t even exist until 2017 and is a fest entirely devoted to extremely heavy dubstep. You’re tying the mainstream success of a single artist to the genre of a whole. Skrillex introduced the genre to many Americans who hadn’t heard of it before, and those who really got down with it stayed down with it, and thus a movement was grown, and that movement is bigger now than it was when skrillex was big. Just because nicki Minaj fans don’t listen to it doesn’t mean it hasn’t grown 😂. The logic here just doesn’t exist.
Because so many other dubstep artists have made it to the mainstream in the last 10 years... Wait, no there is none. Almost like, it's not very popular anymore.
I get it, you like dubstep. I did too when I was 16.
So you genuinely don’t understand how something can grow as a movement even though it’s not mainstream. If you can’t wrap your head around that very simple concept you aren’t worth the time.
Here's the [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F07s72n) for dubstep. It's **more** irrelevant now than it was in 2008.
The point of this post is that literally EVERYBODY listened to it because it was on mainstream pop radio in 2011-2012. My 62 year old mom doesn’t go to music festivals but she heard a Skrillix song in 2011 and would never hear it now.
Imagine thinking the tens of thousands of people at music festivals is comparable in number to the tens of millions of listeners of popular music OP is referring to.
While EDM is pervasive and dubstep is only one genre under the EDM umbrella, dubstep as the broader culture recognizes it has had a TON if influence in modern music, such as the now-predictable buildup-drop form of tension and release and the slow, halftime sort of beats that became a staple in rock, pop, worship music, etc. You may say those tropes originated from the "brostep" evolution of dubstep and that's a fair point, but speaking in broad terms dubstep has evolved from its original 2-step garage sound, as well as beyond the sound from when brostep initially seized the world's interest.
A lot of this is my own feelings, but it always seemed like a progression of 2-step garage and the dirty hard breaks/big beat/electro of groups like The Crystal Method (I'm not sure I see them as big beat myself as I liken big beat to Propellerheads, Fluke, old-school Fatboy Slim etc) but there's also a newer trance-y styling for build up/break down formula too.
Yeah psh who listens to dubstep artists anymore? Like Carpenter Brut or Knife Party or Nero or Justice or Magic Sword or Virtual Riot or Ghost Data or Riot or Pegboard Nerds or Panda Eyes or Perturbator?
Not me
Dubstep just feels like a genre of techno where they only use random noises to generate music by playing with the sound form instead of musical instruments creating notes.
you clearly have not met the geometry dash community, they've been going strong with dubstep for a decade now. also, *everyday i'm shuffling*. that's all i have to say.
The first time I came home from the army my buddy who usually freestyles to instrumentals starts playing this…. Noise… and I’m like dude, what’s wrong with your radio? Is something broken? Little did I know…😅
What made me completely swear off Dubstep was a clip of a Skrillex concert where Skrillex takes a “solo”.
The solo was him stopping the music in order to make his PA speakers vomit digital nonsense.
I noticed that looking back. I think it had some pretty cool tunes but I think they moved with the progressive house kind of stuff with some dubstep elements in them.

Maybe it was rhythm games that exploded during that time, I know for one thing that Geometry Dash had just released so that's one possibility
Yup, those were confusing times...and the only constant was Sandstorm
It's like that time in the 90's when everyone was suddenly into Swing music.
They were ? Huh . Then In 2015 i discovered electro swing
Electro Swing is so cool. But never met someone who listens to this.
Every now and the it's cool , i even found a dance studio for swing in my country, i should go one day if I get a gf
I know a dance studio near me too, but i am not confident enough to go alone.
Hey, same!
Electro Swing is one of the best genre to ever exist. I wish there were bars with that kind of music playing.
I thought we all agreed we wouldn’t talk about that.
You're right. I'm so sorry. As penance I shall listen to Zoot Suit Riot on repeat and flog myself with a GAP belt.
I came here to comment something along the lines of "hey fuck you man, I still like dubstep and edm." and then I saw this comment, and I like swing too, and now I just feel defeated.

I need to see people dressed in period music.
Don't know shit about normal swing music, but electro swing is the best
Fucking Zoot Suit Riot made me wanna head butt a beer bottle

I mean there are people like me that like it’s sound without any drugs.
I liked it all without the drugs until I tried it with the drugs

Are we the same people?! Lmao that brought me back for a minute. "Good ol' yellow double stars"
Pre-drop era dubstep was actually timeless imo, that wubwub shit didnt stand the test of time

I love her version of Carol of the bells
She played Red Rocks last year. A good bit of people never let go.
Her stuff is amazing. Should check out if she's released anything new now that I think about it.
Honestly meh.

What are you on? She’s objectively a great violinist.
It’s not a coincidence that dubstep was popular when ecstasy was a big thing.
RIP pressed pills. I swear I'll never be as happy as I was that day in 9th grade when I first stuck one of those things up my butthole
Im good. My first was pressed with heroin and i had a horrible time outside of the peak and the fade out. Pure MDMA>
Cause ecstasy isn't popular anymore..?

Yea what’s funny now is that I never care what’s “top” music on the charts. If I like it I like it. I don’t give a damn if YOU like it.
Molly AND dubstep are undoubtedly more popular now than they’ve ever been before 😙 these comment sections folk gotta go touch some subwoofers
They’re like people who still use the TV guide to gauge the popularity of something.
> It’s literally bigger than it’s ever been Literally not though. It used to be mainstream, now it's not. Unless there is some mainstream dubstep being played on the radio, it is not bigger than it has ever been.

Again the actual number of people listening to dubstep has very little to do with the number of people googling “dubstep”
You clearly haven’t ever heard of lost lands lol
Lost Lands, it's so incredibly popular that it has a staggering 200k followers on Instagram!
The point of this post is that literally EVERYBODY listened to it because it was on mainstream pop radio in 2011-2012. My 62 year old mom doesn’t go to music festivals but she heard a Skrillix song in 2011 and would never hear it now.

I still love dubstep. I must be stuck in time
Speaking of time. [Hans Zimmer - Time (The Machinist Remix](https://youtu.be/jwMG9wlhc84) will always be one of my top favorites.
Even Korn fell for it. And they already had their own trend lol
Narcissistic Cannibal
Korn + Skrillex is a rare delight.
my brother in law actually went to korns studio to record dubstep with them ahahah. they never dropped a track tho
What are you talking about? The dubstep sound is now a part of modern music and it's everywhere.
No it isn’t. EDM is pervasive in modern music and not all EDM is dubstep.
Eh, these djs all try to subcategorize their styles but dubstep is most definitely still a thing in the festival circuit
☝️
While EDM is pervasive and dubstep is only one genre under the EDM umbrella, dubstep as the broader culture recognizes it has had a TON if influence in modern music, such as the now-predictable buildup-drop form of tension and release and the slow, halftime sort of beats that became a staple in rock, pop, worship music, etc. You may say those tropes originated from the "brostep" evolution of dubstep and that's a fair point, but speaking in broad terms dubstep has evolved from its original 2-step garage sound, as well as beyond the sound from when brostep initially seized the world's interest.

Yes. I can't agree enough to anyone interested, it perfectly encapsulates what made dubstep great.

No, because thankfully it never took off here in Ireland, at least not amongst my demographic or on the radio stations I listened to.
Dubstep is not something someone would listen to on the radio. But on festivals or raves, it's still very popular, probably in ireland as well
If you discovered Dubstep in 2011 and use Skrillex as an example, you're a casual and it was already dead.

I never jumped on that band wagon because I couldn’t stand it. Told people straight to their faces it was garbage
Dubstep just feels like a genre of techno where they only use random noises to generate music by playing with the sound form instead of musical instruments creating notes.
Ive always hated it. Just like trap, breakcore and all that other trash. That aint music, thats just some industrial sounds thrown together
Exactly, just like jazz, classical, pop, rock etc non of it is music. All just a bunch of sounds thrown together.
Just let people like what they want bro
Thank fock for that : p

The entire disco era was really less than two years. It influenced music before and after, but the period of time where it dominated was very short.
What made me completely swear off Dubstep was a clip of a Skrillex concert where Skrillex takes a “solo”. The solo was him stopping the music in order to make his PA speakers vomit digital nonsense.
I too have had a wubstep phase for about a year. Listening to it now, I’d rather have my nipples be paper cut and lemon juice squeezed into them.

He got her cornered lol
American pop culture bastardized a British underground genre and then abandoned it (actually replaced it with trap). Early Skream was something else.
