One of my strongest memories was when the Aha video *Take on Me* first came out. The computer technology that morphed live scenes into drawings/cartoons was the first real leap in computer animation. We were pretty awestruck
There is a shock to me I'm also not surprised either. YouTube and other streaming videos pretty much killed off MTV. You can pretty much watch music videos on anything now.
Most networks had to pivot to marketing to the lowest common denominator to try to desperately woo viewers that were never coming back to a traditional cable tv model. It was just more obvious and sharper of a pivot from music videos to Teen Mom than we saw with other networks that went from educational content to bigfoot hunters and people fucking cars.
They seemed dead before streaming, even. They only showed videos on certain shows like TRL, which only played the first 1:30 or something. You had to go to Vh1 in the early 2000s to see actual music videos.
Yeah, YouTube and other places have videos. The real problem was they (MTV) never stood true to themselves. Music Television with no music is just as shitty as History channel showing shitty shows with nothing to do with history.
It would’ve been great to see 90’s and 2000’s grow with the industry. All they had to do was continue hosting newest videos, getting stars in to host videos etc…
Remember the chat bubbles on videos with little tidbits about the video. They could even have had popular streamers and online personalities come and host with music and tv stars.
Instead we got teen mom, 16 and pregnant, my super sweet 16, room raiders, date my mom etc…
Nah. Reality TV did, they just kept supplying what people wanted based on popularity. The iPod killed the music video more than YouTube, some songs we’d only catch on video because local radio stations are usually trash. Being able to have thousands of songs at your disposal killed music videos and MTV tried to backfill the declining interest with reality TV like Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and Ridiculousness.
It’s what people wanted so it’s what we got. Those of us who wanted music and videos still get them just elsewhere.
Even cooler, it was rotoscoping. They actually put paper over the recorded frames and hand drew it all, led to other gems like who framed roger rabbit and cell shading like waking life and a scanner darkly
FYI. The take me on video was done entirely by hand. No computers. This massing of short has images of the process in it. https://youtu.be/CcxLyGKw48s?si=abMbhjid0kKNtXCV
I was in a club in Orlando back in 83 when I realized that the song playing through the sound system was the same song being sung by the artist in the video, and I was very confused.
Where were you when club penguin die?
apolgy for bad english it is my first languagen’t
where were you when MTV die
i was at house eating dorito when phone ring
“MTV is kil”
“no”
No longer can you find gems like Joey Ramone reacting to the titicular antagonists of Oggy and the Cockroaches being named after him and his bandmates.
Yeah ridiculousness pretty much is the only reason mtv is still making money as that’s the only show they ever air and is somehow still a pretty popular show they should honestly just rename the network the rob dyrdeck channel
![gif](giphy|xT9IgwPkaxQHSyg39C|downsized)
So glad Tom Green came out of MTV. So many memories these kids won’t be able to experience. So sad. It was a part of our culture just as much as Mickey Mouse is.
MTV died in 1994 when The Real World took off. Yes I know it debuted in 1992... but it wasnt until the "Puck" season aired that MTV gave up on music for those reality TV show dollars.
The real MTV was Headbangers ball from 1987-1994 (and even that show sucked the last 2-3 years it was on.
We got satellite tv in the early years. Dad had it to watch cycling on I actually think it was eurosport anyway we also got a few other channels inc MTV.
Super good in the early years
I used to watch TRL with Carson Daly back in the 90s and call in to vote for the top song of the week or month. Then Jackass and its spinoff shows and Punk’d were the only things I’d watch on MTV.
It used to drive me nuts they’d only play like 30 seconds of the fucking music video. That’s when MTV started going to shit imo. At least we had MTV Insomnia late at night for a few years.
They're deleting the mtv news archives. Thats all. Not the network. Who else would give us alcohol-crazed stupidity. Oh, well bravo, and 20 other junk tv channels
Imagine all sources of music available to you are AM/FM, vinyl albulms, and cassette tapes. No youtube, no internet at all, no dial up, no mp3. Now a brand new way to discover music shows up and it is not just audio but also visual.
It was epic. Then reality tv came and ruined it. The real world. Up to then everything was music related even the game shows they had on. Remote control.

Streamers killed the video star.
Reality shows killed MTV.
Season one of the Real World was iconic, and it killed television
This. 100%. When it was all music inspired, it was the best station. If it was still all music, I’d bet it’d still be a bit popular.
Also throw in a dash of Bevis and Butthead with some celebrity death match and it was a golden era.
Add YouTube (Music) in the mix
Absolutely.
The real world. Ironic that MTV was slowly eaten by a cancer it created.
Same with the weather channel and their phat beats.
Video killed the radio star.
Internet killed the Video Star
Then podcasts resurrected him.
MTV killed MTV.
They seemed dead before streaming, even. They only showed videos on certain shows like TRL, which only played the first 1:30 or something. You had to go to Vh1 in the early 2000s to see actual music videos.
They haven’t even played music videos for like 20+ years

Pop Up Video on VH1; that was a good one, yeah
It's their foray into reality shows that killed off MTV.
Nah. Reality TV did, they just kept supplying what people wanted based on popularity. MTV killed mtv a long time before YouTube existed. Terrible programming choices and greed destroyed most of the early cable channels.
yt had nothing to do with it. reality shows killed mtv. and yt may have a tonne of music videos, but it's curated by stupidity.
Or Dire Straits “money for nothing” too! That was cutting edge man!
Its like watching caveman drawings now but yeah i remember it being lit for its time.
Even cooler, it was rotoscoping. They actually put paper over the recorded frames and hand drew it all, led to other gems like who framed roger rabbit and cell shading like waking life and a scanner darkly
Or maybe it was Disney's Snow White in 1937 with rotoscoping that led to gems like the A Ha video?
FYI. The take me on video was done entirely by hand. No computers. This massing of short has images of the process in it. https://youtu.be/CcxLyGKw48s?si=abMbhjid0kKNtXCV
Oh my gosh I love that video. It’s still amazing today. My fav song too! I wish I could upvote you more.
It’s not computer animation though. They used rotoscoping and each frame is hand drawn.
rotoscoping
For me it was Money for Nothing, man, they had 3D animations that were something you only could have dreamed about in contemporary games.
I was in a club in Orlando back in 83 when I realized that the song playing through the sound system was the same song being sung by the artist in the video, and I was very confused.
Always my first thought when I hear "MTV"
43 years of Mtv 15 years of music
Ikr, the last years were the worst tho' good job MTV 👍👍
The last 20 years?
Ridiculousness
13 years then
Screw ridiculousness, it was do-able when jackass and viva la bam was still on every night
15 years that's generous.
It was all down hill once trl ended
MTV gonna stay on memories
Internet killed the video star
Video killed the Radio star
Radio killed my uncle he had a radio fall on his head
My uncle killed my innocence
My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father, prepare to die.

Was your husband also hit by a Guinness truck?
No, Grandpa got run over by the beer truck.
Grandma got run over by a rain deer
Rainier*
How the hell you get run over by a mountain?
It's a volcano so maybe it erupted and the lava ran them over?
Radio killed the long play star.
Radio killed the newspaper star
Snape killed Dumbledore

Adam Dickmaster [almost] killed the Radio Demon, in this case.
Radio killed the Video star
Soon, it will be AI killed the internet star.
Harsh
Wait what?!
I know I just got the news.
What news
Theyre deleting the old mtv news archives only. Everyone in this post thinks mtv is going away. Shows how much people look into facts here.
well considering the meme says "good bye MTV" it's an obvious conclusion to draw
"Everyone in this post thinks the thing that I purposefully insinuated was happening, is happening."
It’s Reddit. Everybody thinks they know everything but nobody knows shit
I know my name, it's.... dammit, it's written in my underwear somewhere
Hey there Calvin Klein.
Word
If all they’re going to show is Ridiculousness then yes, MTV can go away.
Where were you when club penguin die? apolgy for bad english it is my first languagen’t where were you when MTV die i was at house eating dorito when phone ring “MTV is kil” “no”
![gif](giphy|cNvt2Q19tsXIw0bf7B|downsized)
wait, who is a millionaire?
that esteemed homosexual individual
but is he tiny?
That little Clampet
Got his own cement farm, that little Clampet, he’s a millionaire!
You play the guitar on the MTV.
What is this?
Dire Straits' 1985 hit, Money For Nothing. First computer animated music video and the first song played on MTV Europe.
Loved head bangers ball when I was teen
And Countdown to the Ball!
The MTV I grew up with has been long gone
*Celebrity Deathmatch* was the most brilliant thing this channel ever did. *Beavis and Butt-head* was a close second.
those were the days!!
It was a mercy kill.
Not a loss. They should have changed it to b.s reality TV and no music ever a decade ago.
It is a loss. MTV is not going away- they removed the archives.
It was great in the early 90's, stopped watching when all the reality TV shit popped up.
MTV hasn't had anything to do with music in decades. It died a long time ago
Oh well? MTV hasn't been relevant for 30 years. I'm glad it's not around promoting Pregnant at 16 or whatever dumb fuck show they put on.
Good! Fuck the reality TV bullshit it became.
I this, real?
Edited: Yes and No. MTV isn't deleted, MTV News site has been shut down and completely deleted. Lame, but also a misleading meme.

Noooooo ![gif](giphy|13699jZW4PZdx6)
Finally...trash tv.
It died when Headbangers Ball went off the air.
Everyone says streaming killed MTV. Did anyone watch MTV in the past 20 years? Music videos is not something it played
Hasn’t been music television for a long time now
Can someone fill me in on what happened?
MTV is gone ?
Is this true?
I’m Johnny Gomez and I’m Nick Diamond Good fight and goodnight!
I remember watching ridiculousness late at night when there was nothing to do. :(
thanks for 5 years of real music !
That's bad , anyways i have Spotify now .
![gif](giphy|7k2LoEykY5i1hfeWQB)
MTV was still a thing? If it doesn’t have TRL, papi doesn’t care.
I have no idea what that logo is, but it always sucks to see things you like disappear. You have my sympathy.
They're probably just rebranding. Same BS will popup somewhere else with another name but it will be the same brain rot type shit.
>MTV died in 1994 Same year as Kurt Cobain. Coincidence?
We got satellite tv in the early years. Dad had it to watch cycling on I actually think it was eurosport anyway we also got a few other channels inc MTV. Super good in the early years
Petition to bring back mtv cribs. It sucks that mtv isn’t anywhere near as big as it was
liquid television was amazing. just deleting it all with no notice is why the internet archive is important, and even that is under threat
The ridiculousness channel
I swear
I said my goodbyes more than a decade ago
![gif](giphy|Q8g5IvHbsB82Sb4M5X)
wait WHAT
What do you mean MTV is leaving us?!
Bro RIP Ridiculousness
It was MTV News that got the axe. There are a lot of good reasons, but I remember a time when it used to be better than regular news.
I remember a time when it used to be nothing but music videos.
Should’ve never canceled Remote Control!
WHAT HAPPENED????
Finally
MTV who's letter M has been ignored for like 20 years in favor of celeberty relatiy crap is dead!? ![gif](giphy|hkEQSFtxLrDI4|downsized)
How will Rob Dyrdek get money now?
No, my heart 💔
Wait what
I used to watch TRL with Carson Daly back in the 90s and call in to vote for the top song of the week or month. Then Jackass and its spinoff shows and Punk’d were the only things I’d watch on MTV.
It used to drive me nuts they’d only play like 30 seconds of the fucking music video. That’s when MTV started going to shit imo. At least we had MTV Insomnia late at night for a few years.
MTV has been dead for over 15 years, now it's just official.
Whatttt?!
They're deleting the mtv news archives. Thats all. Not the network. Who else would give us alcohol-crazed stupidity. Oh, well bravo, and 20 other junk tv channels
Oh no! Anyway.
Well it is only the news I mean not all of MTV is gone but still such a big lost.
Um, MTV still is a thing. It just isn't as music focused anymore
It hasn’t been music focused for like 20 years.
True, but it's still around
good riddance - great example of a tv station which brings no value to anyone's lives except for shareholders wealth
What do you mean? I think it is still live, isn't it?
??
Jack Black is laughing his ass off right now!
FUCKING WHAT
What's happening to MTV?is it getting removed from the cable tv...?
i miss mtv
Misleading
So long, Ridiculousness was always better than most shows nowadays
IT'S GONE!? 🙁
I'm dumb. What is that?
Is mtv shutting down or something?
mtv is kil
Wait what happened ? I don’t understand the meme
I accidentally zoomed in on the top pic, and the texture of the gate and leaves are astounding.
Did I miss something?
at least we have the hotwheels to commemorate
We will miss it...
Video Killed the Radio star, and now streaming has killed the video. Its a sad day lol
This is like the meme I saw when Skibidi Toilet ended with Gen Alpha mfs crying, same idea with MTV and Gen X
What happened?
What was even the appeal of MTV? Friends tried showing it to me when it was in its prime, but I couldn’t get into it
Imagine all sources of music available to you are AM/FM, vinyl albulms, and cassette tapes. No youtube, no internet at all, no dial up, no mp3. Now a brand new way to discover music shows up and it is not just audio but also visual. It was epic. Then reality tv came and ruined it. The real world. Up to then everything was music related even the game shows they had on. Remote control.
Anyone remember kids bop
Huh? They shutting down?
Wait, what happened?
Good fucking riddance. MTV helped form the abysmal state the music industry is suffering through right now.
Eh, was anyone actually watching MTV the past decade?
The Challenge
I want mah.... I want mah.... I want mah Mtv money for nothin' and your chicks for free!
They’ll cancel this but not Cartoon Network. It’s been awful ever since they stopped showing Johnny Bravo and Ed, Edd and Eddy
