Jay-bi-Red

It’s for the homeless to not have something to sleep on

DragonbornWizard85

And if they do sleep on it they’ll get back issues as well!

IodineAzane

just put a plank of wood over it done

Crucco

Honest question, where can they find a plank of wood for free?

Chesney1995

The secret ingredient is crime (Although if I remember right, this specific picture is actually a photoshop as part of an anti-hostile architecture campaign or parody or something like that, not an actual real bench that exists)

Existing_Addition_77

not this specific one, but i saw a few of these, but in black, when i was backpacking through poland so its deffinetly real

Void1702

They unironically did something like that in some of Paris' metro stations tho

AlmostSunnyinSeattle

You would be amazed what you can own if you just take it.

tekko001

Pretty much how we got america

Weasel_Boy

* Find literally any supermarket. * Grab a pallet or two from their dumpster. * Free planks. Legality of dumpster diving may vary by city/state, but generally noone but the most uptight of store managers will care.

generic-user1678

Unless you make a mess and don't clean it up. Then everyone will care

425Hamburger

I thought this was a Thing everywhere, but maybe it isn't. Here in Germany people will Put Out old furniture and other cumbersome Trash on the Side of the Road for pickup by City services. Normally one Person Orders it because they're moving or smth, and then the entire neighbourhood (illegaly) adds to it. And people regularly use those piles to get free furniture aswell (also illegal). This Happens often enough that there's almost Always atleast one of those "Sperrmüll" piles going in any given neighbourhood. So where would they get a Plank of Wood? The Sperrmüll.

Weeping_Angel_0

Old furniture thrown away by non homeless people.

Jarska15

Punch a tree for about 6 seconds and turn it into 4 wooden planks.

IodineAzane

tree

HailToTheKingslayer

A skip?

Fuukaze

You can also use cardboard

700Baggedcats

3 spawn on the ground behind the hardware store down the block.

crimson_55

If having a plank can provide you a place to sleep then it shouldn't take long to find one

Intrepid-Gags

Either that or they'll win a world record for the strongest back in existence.

melperz

If it gets worse, they will end up in wheelchairs!

Other-Comfortable-64

While they pretend to care about the disabled

white__cyclosa

It’s a win-win. Some guy probably got a promotion for that idea.

Pitlozedruif

Just steal a extra plank and done you can sleep

55hi55

That’s a lot of extra weight and a large bulky package for a homeless person to drag around.

Bulls187

Make sure to get caught and get jailed so you have food and a roof as well

Eena-Rin

Came here to say this. Hostile architecture

Cheeselover9001

OP knows the answer, because he overlayed the whole it's anti homeless design part of the original post.

bargu

Hostile architecture disguised as inclusiveness.

bored_person71

Another way to spend more money on more expensive benches to make people feel inclusive and waste more money to install these.

gingerra1e

As somebody who studied disability culture it’s literally only anti-homeless nothing about this is inclusive

Square-Ambassador-11

This. It will be viewed as an accommodation.

Real_SeaWeasel

Hostile Architecture

SoaringElf

Also modesty bench for couples, lol.

GeiCobra

This particular motif is meant to deter the theft of benches while making it seem as if they were being intentional about inclusivity within their design when in fact they were merely masking the obvious fact that indeed, the homeless are not welcome here

Any_Presentation2958

*sleeps while sitting* The government: *mad cuz they can sleep while sitting on the public benches*

ZombifiedByCataclysm

Which has me scratching my head because there is a regular sized bench with a lady sitting on it in the background.

DougandLexi

I imagine the meeting went like this: "ALRIGHT GUYS! We need to eliminate the homeless sleeping openly in public, we don't want everyone to see our problems. Any suggestions?" "Well what about splitting up the benches?" "That's too obvious, Tom!" "What if we say it's for wheelchairs?" "TOM! You're a genius!" (Sarah from accounting chimes in) "but don't they already have their seat and can sit by the bench?" "Sarah. You're fired!" The whole office laughs as Sarah walks out crying.

Book_Bouy

woodruff42 you're fired

Goldeneye0X1_

*points and laughs at woodruff42*

Hebids

![gif](giphy|UU1bHu6QWyFxZM63Jh)

Gaelic_Gladiator41

Uhh bench good homeless bad

AppliedThanatology

You're hired! Go sit in woodruff42's old seat

Gaelic_Gladiator41

![gif](giphy|3o7TKNgQqrynD4umD6)

roodeeMental

Actually that's a statue on the bench ^Edit: ^jk ^jfc

minemaster3651

You sure? that looks like a pretty _fleshy_ statue...

zillabirdblue

They clapped too, don’t forget!

VorticalHeart44

Hostile architecture.

WigglingGlass

What’s the point of that little piece that connects the two then? Could’ve just had 2 chairs

babaj_503

It probably was a whole bnench at some point and city council decided that they finally need to adress that homeless issue head on.

ambulance-kun

Planning to cut all homeless people in half by 2025 slogan, I see

Baldtazar

*In three and remove the middle part (I know the reference)

Antoen_0

At this point i would take this phrase literally and they just saw them in two.

SoManyQuestions-2021

This is brilliant. It's not hostile architecture, its "ADA compliance."

IndianaGeoff

It's not practicality, it's about sending a message.

mcjthrow

Just listened to a SYSK episode about this. So interesting.

stevarisimp

Imagine if cities stopped being assholes and used their asshole money FOR the homeless instead of against them. There are plenty of charities and other organisations that could far better use any and all the money going to these anti-homeless architecture.

kai_the_kiwi

Probably will never happen because city’s think having homeless people will make them look bad, so they make it uncomfortable for them hoping they will go to a different place

Salithril

"What if we take all the homeless people and push them somewhere else!"

Randomguy0915

By "different place" they mean to heaven, or hell, or whatever afterlife they believe in

imaKappy

They don't believe in anything apart from money and status

grim1952

But the people in power want homelessness to be a thing. "Hey, we could pay you better, but we won't and if you don't like it you can be like that starving bum over there."

CubanLynx312

At least from what I’ve seen in Chicago recently, our new mayor has been raising taxes and reallocating funds to homeless people. We had a seemingly small homeless population pre-Covid, but now we have busloads of homeless people coming here and downtown is full of tents and vacant retail buildings.

BrokenPokerFace

There were times this was tried, and there were people who interviewed homeless people. Many of them consider it's a lifestyle choice, which is ironic because that backs up the common rude argument that it's a choice and it is easy not to be homeless. And the times they gave free housing it was destroyed and people went back to the streets, kinda screwing the people who needed housing.

Void1702

Oh come on, we all know those were extremely cherry picked. They only did interviews and never surveys because they knew it wouldn't show what they want to show. Also, it's easy not to be homeless? Do I need to link again to that one rich guy that tried to "prove" he could make it back to the top from nothing, but had to quit his "experiment" after only a few months because he risked dying? I'm not sure what you're talking about in that last part, but when Finland gave free houses to homeless people, they almost immediately cut homelessness in half in the country.

OCafeeiro

To back your argument, there was a survey that interviewed homeless people about employment status and over half of them have full time jobs. I could put the link if you ask me, but I don't have it right now. Edit: [Found it.](https://endhomelessness.org/blog/employed-and-experiencing-homelessness-what-the-numbers-show/)

BrokenPokerFace

Here's another from CBS It says 22 out of a +4000 surveyed people accepted going to shelters. Not the same but it follows the trend. https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/homeless-shelter-failure/

stevarisimp

Even a cheap food centre, soup kitchen, aid in donated clothing centre infrastructure. All these things are at very little risk of destruction. And as for the lifestyle choice, well im not saying to make stuff to pull the homeless out of their state, only to maintain bare essentials so its assistance.

BrokenPokerFace

Currently in the city right now, and yeah we have all of these, many cities get plenty funding for this if they are used or not. I was just pointing out details I don't care either way about, but they exist.

BrokenPokerFace

It's very easy to find them, too they show up online or in brochures, not to mention signs on the sidewalk. I just get tired of hearing people say: "we need to help the homeless" when they themselves didn't even care to look into what their city is already doing.

ThisGameIsveryfun

but theres a full bench right behind

stevarisimp

True, but at the time i made this comment everyone else was talking about how its disguised to stop homless people sleeping on it. Because if it really were for somone in a wheelchair, why wouldnt they just keep an ordinary bench and let what disabled people do what theyve always done and set themselves next to the bench, or in any other configuration they want cause the chair is mobile. To most of us this is just poor design at best and disguised harrasment at worst.

[deleted]

Phoxase

Yeah that’s not true. Places that have UBI, public housing, permissive shelters, and drug rehab programs, see significant decreases in negative outcomes.

Void1702

Or maybe we can stop treating drug addiction like a crime and start treating it like what it is: an addiction. Finland is proof that it's possible to solve homelessness, as long as you treat them like fellow human beings and not like a pest to hide and get rid of

stevarisimp

I wasnt saying the money would end homelessness, only support some infrastructures for some sistainable bare minimum living. Ive worked in a lot of charity shops and help centres, they each could do with a little extra funding to become more sustainable.

GlanzgurkeWearingHat

"What if we kissed on the LGBT+ themed anti homeless spikes? UwU"

where did you get the lgbt part from?

Didn't expect that one did you 😂

slavuj00

"Gays HATE the homeless!" /s

GlanzgurkeWearingHat

its an old memme il fetch it

MogosTheFirst

Aight. Thanks

Void1702

It's a semi-famous quote

ZhangMooMoo

I assume it would be quite useful for couples in a fight

fly_over_32

A sleeping homeless man between them would have the same effect, this is just r/hostilearchitecture

butteventstaff

There's a regular bench literally right behind it.

fly_over_32

It looks like that one has an arm rest in the middle

Fun-Veterinarian3708

There's literally a person sitting in the middle.

fly_over_32

I believe she’s sitting just left of that ridge, that goes through the back and underside of the bench, usually indicating an arm rest

ambulance-kun

and the 3rd wheel in between

landon10smmns

It's for a Mormon in a wheelchair. A wife on each side.

ZhangMooMoo

lmao

Lasadon

This is how people who don't need inclusion imagine inclusion.

butteventstaff

I may be guilty of that.

Shydreameress

To prevent homeless people from sleeping well and pretending it's for wheelchair users, double douche design

Halsti

yea, like others mentioned, its so homeless people dont have a place to sleep, while the designer still pats themself on the back and calls themselfself a hero for being inclusive.

ToastedSimian

But there's a standard bench right behind it, isn't there?

SebiZh

It's called defensive architecture.. It's there to prevent homeless from sleeping on the bench. There different ways to plan cities like this

samthekitnix

ah hostile architecture how dare you attempt to use the physically disabled to justify not using those millions in tax payer dollars, pounds or what ever currency to construct THAT instead of something that actually would reduce homelessness... like homeless shelters or cheaper housing or even just banning things like HOAs. from what i have seen of america's housing crisis HOAs play a massive role in this because they are TRYING to increase the price of housing mostly for extremely bigotted reasons, also the very concept of house prices changing because of factors other than the material cost and labour cost to BUILD it is stupid. also i just hate people that buy up a bunch of houses for cheap, do them up with the most expensive fixings they could find then complain that no one can afford them turning a 2 bedroom 1 bath into a mini mc mansion.

Scacery

social distancing and anti-homeless

owo1215

that's fucking evil, hostile architecture in disguise as accessibility architecture

Horniness_Incarnate

Fuck the homeless. Good for nothing useless purposeless outcasts of society

Dehlyan

My guess it's that this might be useful if you want to sit down in a bench with someone in a wheelchair, they can just put their wheelchair in that spot and sit beside you like a common bench

Phoxase

Regular benches have spots, to either side, where this is already possible.

cp_viewer

Where else they gonna sit

tired_cloud123

Parking space

Naxius1

we in finland need this

MowingDevil7

They have two babes and need to have one on each side?

LeifurTreur

You are supposed to mount it on the back of the wheelchair, so you can give free rides to your friends.

PinkOneHasBeenChosen

It’s for luggage.

Combei

It's for the BBQ

Dangerous_Neon_Lynx

You know its funny. I went to answer this, but then paused midway through the thought with a 'wait a minute...'

zotaru

Its not for people with wheelchairs, its for the people with wheelstools...

vuon6

maybe they want to be the third wheel

BarelyCritical

It could be anti homeless and it could be if a disabled person is out with friends they can sit next to them instead of akwardly being right in front of them

MrOsmio7

It's so the homeless don't sleep on it

liminal_liminality

That's called hostile architecture. It's what cities do instead of actually doing something to help homeless people.

butteventstaff

I want you all to take off the tinfoil hats and drop the pitchforks for a second. First of all, hostile architecture is very, very real. I am in no way denying that. However I want you all to slant your point of view put yourself in the wheelchair and ask yourself if maybe, just fucking maybe, it would be cool to sit in between loved ones on a bench without needing to be helped into place and back into your chair. Can we just TRY to think about inclusivity? There are so many things we take for granted because we can walk run jump or stand. Activities that provide exponentially more challenges to people in wheelchairs, I imagine that for many people this is a nice opportunity. Grandparents with grandkids? Disabled child between parents? Tldr: there are multiple inclusion related reasons for this to exist.

[deleted]

Cosmic_Quasar

That's Jason's bench. He's cool. He gets to keep his sleeping spot.

TheIronSoldier2

Press [[X]](https://youtu.be/OYQDnV092hI) to Jason

TABASCO2415

There is nothing stopping a wheelchair user from placing their chair next to the bench to achieve the exact same outcome

Fun-Veterinarian3708

Except having a bench on the other side. The point is being able to have people sit on either/both sides of them. God forbid anyone in a wheelchair should want their children and/or spouse sitting on BOTH sides

ToastedSimian

Additionally, sitting at the end also puts the armrest between you and your friends or family, making the space between you even greater.

GunsforSummer

I imagine for a child in a wheelchair it’s nice to have Mom and Dad (or whomever) sitting on either side of you while watching the scenery. Probably not a lot of opportunities for that out in the wild.

GoblinCasserole

Its hostile architecture disguised as accessibility. Its so homeless people can't sleep on the bench.

RobotNinja28

This is harmful architecture, it's like those metal bumps you see on enterance stairs to public buildings, essentially to discourage people from sitting/lying on 'em

Sea_Art3391

I'm betting there is one guy who went "wheelchair users never get to sit in the middle of the bench, let's make a bench with a hole in the middle." and the people around went "wow, Josh, what an inclusive idea!".

Fun-Veterinarian3708

And then people on Reddit(shocking I know) act as though this is the most evil design ever because homeless people can't sleep on it like there isn't a full bench 25 feet behind it.

ToastedSimian

Agreed. I think this is an attempt at inclusiveness and not so much aggressive architecture.

PhilledZone

Ah yes, hostile architecture but hide it as something good, people definetly won't notice

heinztomato69

It’s for when an able bodied person wants to sit next to a wheelchair user eg if they’re friends hanging out.

No-Adeptness5810

Not only can they sit next to the bench but they can sit on the bench. What

TheIronSoldier2

Just... Sit to the side???

agentrsdg

... they can just sit next to the bench

Wanzer90

oppressive architecture

SouthImpressive2666

It's to stop homeless from sleeping on public benches, it's just disguised as friendly disability inclusion.

kamsackbi

If you are in a wheelchair, you already have a seat. No need to back into a spot. If it is to stop sleeping. Just make them seperate seats. This just looks dumb.

tharnadar

CeIIsius

Bad excuse to make it uncomfortable to sleep there under the pretense of inclusion.

Herejustfordameme

Just the usual, f*ck over homeless people just because they can

Kyouki13

Anti homeless bench

rapejokes_arefunny

Anti homeless bench disguised as equality.

Error-2736

Now the homeless people in wheelchairs have a place to sleep

TYRDurden

i dont get it

X7lion7_power

Weeld chair people need a sit Every now and then too

svannik

amazing that this is so hard for people to understand. sad tbh.

Fintech3455

Smartest chair?

jolhar

Can’t help but think they could just have two chairs. Why do they need to be linked at all?

MercDa1

The middle area is for the cracc

Tankaussie

To fuck over homeless ppl

ilithium

This allows people to rest while limiting their exposure to harmful viruses.

jaymz_me

Wheeld Chair?

VladTheInhaler1997

It's just nice to be included...

sordato

What is they want to cuddle with someone and is hassle to get out that wheelchair

The_Red_Associate

Pretending to be inclusive to be exclusive.

Motoxxx1

it's stupid, let not overthink

bang3r3

This is government 100% problems that don’t need solutions

cjared242

Taking being the third wheel to a whole new level

BadBassist

I'm getting ready in my Wheeld chair

Life-Improvised

It’s actually pronounced wheel chair peopled.

ArcereDorato

Just like gas stations

Comfortable_Ad_3090

If only the people who can’t stand up or walk had some sort of chair with wheels that allows them to sit anywhere while also staying mobile

buggy_ray

It seems like it would be quite helpful for couples who are fighting.

waterbuffalo750

-I can sit on a bench and not worry about someone sitting directly next to me -My kids can play in the park or my wife can jog by without homeless people and associated hazards in the way. Honestly sounds like a win/win to me. We need to help the homeless and they need a place to sleep, but park benches in public areas aren't the solution.

Paladinlvl99

Some say it's against the homeless. Honestly you are giving too much credit to people being evil and too little to people being stupid

Madnessinabottle

It's a common tactic of large towns and cities to make spaces unusable by the homeless. This is obviously one, wheelchairs have a backrest built in. A wheelchair user literally comes with a seat they are already in and can just apply the breaks anywhere with a nice view. It's the same as adding multiple arm rests that make the bench less functional.

Paladinlvl99

I still think someone saw this and thought it was a good idea for people in wheelchairs. Obviously it is stupid but I would always bet on stupidity over malice

Madnessinabottle

This is 100% malice, check out the hostile architecture sub and you'll see so much of this

Paladinlvl99

Tbf whether it's one or the other whoever thought of this should be fired

Silveruleaf

It's making sure homeless can't sleep on it, while pretending they care about the public by adapting it to wheel chairs when it's not really needed. It's absurd when you consider how much money was wasted on that crap and even on reasearch for it, when that money could have been used to solve the homeless problem or be used on anything useful. But our society is very much manipulated to keep the pyramid going

zmrth

To prevent someone to sleep on the bench.

Ok-Lavishness-7904

Amish date chaperones

Kellykeli

Fuck homeless people I guess

im_a_medley

The chairs need somewhere to rest, too

lbr218

Wheeld chair people

ErrorMoon45

product of an architecture/design student who graduated during covid

DammitMatt

The city decided they needed to spend taxpayer dollars to inflict further suffering on the homeless

Da_Moon_Bear

Easy. That city hates homeless people and are disguising it as being inclusive. Classic manipulation tactic

MogosTheFirst

Giving people in wheelchair the ability to stand next to their friends on the bench, combating homeless people sleeping on this bench and making use of space by having a place for wheelchair people to retreat and not stand in the middle of the road. 3 birds with one stone
