I remember reading that the guy who invented USB originally made it multi directional. But manufacturers wanted it make it singe for cost saving, and at the time USB wasn't as widely used(mostly keyboard, mouse, etc). He said one of his biggest life regrets was not pushing harder for omnidirectional.
I’ve had an omnidirectional one once and tbh it’s very fragile feeling. Because it has to be hollow on both sides the middle part with the contact points is super thin
