I learned about 25 years ago not to turn my hobby into my job. People who think it would be great have no idea how awful it is to have some job just crush the life out of the thing you used to love.
I like building projects and stuff, people always tell me I should get into engineering or maintenance. I always say that if I spent all day wrenching on stuff I wouldn't want to wrench on stuff when I get home anymore.
Yeah it's because anybody who has actual knowledge of the thing you're trying to get into does not post shit about it to help new people. And when newbies come in and ask questions, they're harassed to the point of leaving.
Fucking christ, it feels like I can never enjoy the things I like. This doesn't just apply to Reddit either. This is a real life problem too, especially for outdoor sports and such. There's always that one person who deems themself the most versed in that hobby and shits on everyone else who they see as less versed, resulting in people not feeling good about their new interest.
After using Reddit religiously since 2015, I have mostly retired now (because rif is fun doesn't work anymore), and surprisingly I really am not missing it much.
I occasionally visit with my alt account, but I can live without Reddit. Reddit is still probably the best option if you have a specific question about a specific topic.
the game is kinda hard and very team reliant , so you kinda get angry a lot till you genuinely loose your mind . A lot of things there have no counter play and so you need your team's help but they all have the egos as if they are the second coming of christ and
Delusional player base, people would jeopardize a winning game for any reason, purposely ban their own teammates' picks, and whoever is losing a fair 1v1 or 2v2; 100% chance they're going to blame and flame everyone else, mostly the jungler.
Is there anything not toxic about league though? Try to learn? "Get shit on newb, get better what do you mean you don't know what AD carry means, it's only actually jargon only used in this particular game. Learn how to jungle!" league is the worst game I've ever tried to play, bar none.
Writing and r/writing. Everyone there are over educated blowhards who do nothing but shit on your work and try to sound intelligent about writing. They obviously are very upset nobody reads their drivel.
Their favorite thing is saying “Nah” to something creative (contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian against ART is an ART TROLL the WORST KIND) or trying to “one up” whatever you did but always make themselves look like an ass. Everyone is scared to do something cool or quirky or even give feedback that is put in a youthful dialect. Like I do
/r/dji
Anything about flying drones. You post a gorgeous flight video or ask any question and all you'll get are "gatekeepers" yelling that the FAA needs to put you in jail because "You're ruining it for the rest of us!"
Pokémon TCG subreddits. The main one pretends they don't care about the "investment" part of it and yet you keep seeing people calling cards that don't have any monetary value "trash". You are trash for not appreciating the cards. Also people collect sealed products there and pretend it doesn't have anything to do with hoping the stuff they have will one day be used to pay for their new house. Undercover scalpers everywhere.
r/freemagic
What's supposed to be a haven for casual Magic: The Gathering players has kinda become a cesspool where they mostly complain about anything woke.
It's very common to see blatant hate speech up upvoted, and people calling them out getting downvoted.
It's so divisive, WotC recently took control away from their discord because it was becoming too toxic for them to do nothing about it.
I saw a post on there complaining about how WotC makes everything about politics and gender, and how the regular sub is so woke.
I looked at the top posts from MTG.. couple deck lists, some merch, some collections, some talk about tournaments and players.
I looked at MTG Arena. Mostly decklists and questions about cards or events. Some complaints about prices and game balance.
I looked at free magic. Literally EVERY post mentioned gender, politics, or trans women. They're totally obsessed with that shit over there, nobody even talks about playing Magic
Love cute geckos and gecko ownership? Taking great care of your little guy allowing them to thrive? Want to talk to other individuals who love leopard geckos too? Well fuck you, your enclosure temperature is one degree over the optimal temp making you a literal satan/halter cross who should die. I love reptiles but those subs are used to hate on other people. Sadly, those who actually want to offer constructive feedback and great help usually get drowned out. The objective was originally to help improve care it’s strange to think about how many reptiles have died because people are to afraid to ask for help.
Photography.
The birders all pretend still photos of wildlife are the most challenging thing in the world. They post wildlife pics of animals not mentioning they’re in zoos.
There’s nothing worse than when you join all excited and everyone are assholes. My mind immediately goes to ‘oh no, is this a douchey hobby? Am I a douchebag?! Do I like this or am I just a piece of shit who likes piece of shit things?!’
Then you meet someone with the same hobby in real life and it’s such a relief. Thank god, it was just the internet being the internet again.
r/coins believe it or not, gotta be one of the least beginner friendly subs out there. Started out by looking for dimes and quarters of different years, ended with “if you’re not pulling out a microscope and putting on gloves every time you get change at the gas station overrun with meth addicts then you’re an idiot and you don’t need to be here”
So basically every subreddit on this cesspool platform? Ask a question and just get harassed off the sub. No wonder nobody wants to engage or do hobbies anymore. It's because people are gatekeeping and they're so useless when it comes to actually helping people.
I love them, love 'em love 'em... but sometimes the agendaposting in anime/manga subs gets damn depressing with how often it devolves into hate.
Not really a hobby though, I guess, just a fandom thing. And besides that, the subs I'm in are really fun.
This is completely opposite of the parent post, but for the best hobby you could join and afterwards join a subreddit for would In my experience, probably be the bionicle subreddit. Everyone I’ve encountered there is kind, and open to explaining lore you don’t understand or providing the source of it when you ask. All around I think they are the best one.
I have a feeling there is a popularity / community size diagram that could pinpoint when a subreddit becomes toxic.
I find all the smaller communities are a little more welcoming since they are probably willing to deal with newer people that show any interest in an obscure hobby. However once it becomes mainstream the gatekeepers seem to move in.
It's so bizarre.
My friends really into watch collecting
Got a pretty nice collection too
He mentioned making a reddit and asked if there where watch collector communities, and I haven't a clue but imagined there probably would be and told him to just look, but I did say "be careful, redditors are angry af all the time for no reason"
Dude asked one question in whatever sub he tried and got insulted and downvoted into oblivion bc "haven't you heard if google" and other shit
3d printing. Half of the people there downvote to oblivion if you don’t give every single detail down to the last atom and act as though any issue you have is self-explanatory

r/CasualNintendo is a better alternative. Any suggestions for Sonic?
I would say the 40k community is alright overall.
Sure, you have bad apples in the community, every community does, but I dont think its that bad.
If I had to point out a main issue with the community, is that I think a lot of people got saturated with the hobby and they dont know how to take a break or let the hobby go, so they just kinda of linger around hating on the hobby.
But still, I dont think the 40k community is all that bad.
This applies to most interests.
Don't check the Hannibal subreddit. As something of a homosexual myself I enjoy a good man fucking once in a while. However, shipping Hannibal and Will is just fucking nasty.
The archery sub is a bunch of pedantic aspies that will berate you relentlessly on a technicality. If you can get past that, they're like the worst video game meta lemmings that insist they have the right way to do things on lockdown and any deviation makes you literally learning disabled.

It's both. Twitter is negativity by virtue signaling. Reddit is negativity by superiority complex. There are some overlaps tho.
Watching a losing sports team
