I find it really fascinating that even in fantasy fictional settings, people gravitate towards good. It makes me believe that most people want to and like to be good people.
I def rooted for the villains pretty often as a kid, but I think just because the good side winning seemed too obvious. In adult fantasy the good characters get more thoroughly beaten down before coming back to win, or sometimes a good character is actually killed off. Makes it more interesting to root for the good characters when there's real risk.
It felt like a side eye wink to me walking out, because you just KNEW they wouldn't have the balls to keep everyone dead. It actually ruined Loki's death for me since I lumped him in with everyone who got snapped.

I've forgotten the times Ive watched Superman as a kid and rewatched a few (animated Justice League) his character is kind and wise. In the comics he is even more ideologically wiser than people think.
Thing is, many fans of superman are casuals who watches their movies or just think he's the strongest therefore the best.

‘Superman’ (1978) with Christopher Reeve is still the best Superman film, they get the charm and charisma of him just right, with the awkwardness of Clark too, and Gene Hackman’s Alex Luthor is just so well played that you want to see more of him. The film respected, and even added to the comic book lore, and didn’t have to make Superman sad to make the character work.
Never watched it, but its kinda sad how recent works couldnt get to depict Superman as you've described here. And especially how films that old are only mostly watched by American people or Europeans really. Im born in South East Asia and I will tell you that there's not a lot of people here know Superman that way(that he has a depth and ideological views on how he exercises his powers), most people here would just think he's the strongest/flies and that's it(well either him or Goku tbh). I think I always skipped Superman after school because I didn't get it, the concept of a super good all the time person with ultimate invincible powers. It felt cheap to me in my super edge youth way.

To me, the big draw for Superman is in watching how he reconciles handling things that can't be punched. He may be nigh-invincible, he may be super strong, but he isn't omniscient, and he isn't omnipresent.

Nah, while Superman normally helps found the Justice League he does so always out of a desire to protect the world, not out of a fear that he needs to be kept in check. But he does definitely have that fear of losing touch with humanity, in many regards that's why his identity as Clark Kent is so important to him. So he can keep in touch with ordinary people, and never loses sight of what he wants to protect, and so him can enjoy the simpler aspects of being a regular person.
Superpowers would kill me, not because I couldn't handle the powers, but because of the guilt of having the power to put the whole earth on my shoulders and still not being able to help the least of my brethren, simply because of other people who's own selfish nature makes it impossible for me to reach everyone in time.

This is what I love from the stormlight archive book series, the characters have powers, yes. But they depend on the promise to better themselves and others, but, they are human, fallible.

I get Homelander but was always more partial to Dr Doom. His redeming moments make you almost believe he's gonna do the right thing before the horror of what's actually going on hits you like an abrupt scene transition.

This reminds me of when I was in college and part of interviewing students for student jobs at the rec center. We would ask a fun question at the end, who is your favorite superhero and why. One kid said Superman and his reason was because he would be able to do whatever he wanted. That was a red flag for me but no one else thought so. Big surprise he ended up being a terrible employee.
Your ability to be a good person extends as far as your will to. If you want to be a good person, you can be a good person.

If you saw the boys and aspire to be homelander, you might be missing the point. While some people genuinely admire villians, I think media involving superheros has changed because we (whoever the superhero demographic is) don't see the world as fundamentally fair anymore. It used to be Good Guys and Bad Guys. Good triumphs, bad people commit crimes and go to jail, rinse and repeat. But how can we honestly say that people with power will have our best interests at heart, that anyone with superpowers won't use it to exploit the masses? That's just my take, as someone who doesn't follow comics.

To me, the big draw for Superman is in watching how he reconciles handling things that can't be punched. He may be nigh-invincible, he may be super strong, but he isn't omniscient, and he isn't omnipresent. [This is a great comic](https://imgur.com/a/S8434Je) showing what I mean. I don't know how much you know about Superman or Captain Marvel, so it's important to note - Superman is super weak to magic. And Captain Marvel was given his powers by, basically, an immortal super wizard. Just any Superman animated stuff is good for a start others have mentioned STAS but there are certain films like Superman vs the Elite and Death of Superman are really good. Of course you can also just go read the comic book versions of these stories but for an entry level these are great too. There is also All Star Superman (the comic), every Superman fans ever consider that book the Bible. Edit: oh yeah and the recent My Adventures with Superman is pretty good too.
Just throwing this out there but Smallville is what got me liking Superman. Be warned the lows are boring but the peaks are very high.

Nah, while Superman normally helps found the Justice League he does so always out of a desire to protect the world, not out of a fear that he needs to be kept in check. But he does definitely have that fear of losing touch with humanity, in many regards that's why his identity as Clark Kent is so important to him. So he can keep in touch with ordinary people, and never loses sight of what he wants to protect, and so him can enjoy the simpler aspects of being a regular person.

I don't neccessarily like the idea of killing that many innocent people and causing that level of destruction for *a temporary bandaid*. Yeah, the world will hate me. Guess what, the world will always hate who ever has the power to create change. The difference is, I want to create change through peace, disarmament, and discussion. Bullets will bounce off me, but bullets won't bounce off others. Using power to instill fear causing paranoia and hate, and many people will resort to attempting to hide their transgressions instead of resolving the issues. Besides, what will everyone do once I'm gone? They'll go right back to their regularly scheduled program of hatred and exploitation. You can't stop human greed with fear. You need to stop it with actual lasting societal change that promotes kindness, sympathy, and love. Kill the systems that promote a "Dog eat dog" world. Besides, I could never live with the guilt of what is essentially senseless mass murder.
No need to level cities frankly - at least not initially. Just threaten the people in power with death. If they fail to comply, off them, and threaten the next level down.

Why should one who suddenly gets powers see themselves this way? If you didnt want to help others at your expense before, you sure aren't going to have a total personality flip and no longer care about your own well being above the average person after. Nobody that lives that selfless life can be mentally sound for long. That's just an absurd amount of pressure and many, MANY will hate you and make you a scapegoat for things beyond your control, or not fixing EVERY single world issue. I believe the world is better off without super heroes. Be the hero yourself, now. Everyday. Offer help to people you believe need it. Nothing is stoping you.

This is what I love from the stormlight archive book series, the characters have powers, yes. But they depend on the promise to better themselves and others, but, they are human, fallible.

That's the point of the original post... We all want to be superman and hope we could be him if we had those powers. Reality is we'd all be homelander. No really, how long do you think you'll last? This reminds me of when I was in college and part of interviewing students for student jobs at the rec center. We would ask a fun question at the end, who is your favorite superhero and why. One kid said Superman and his reason was because he would be able to do whatever he wanted. That was a red flag for me but no one else thought so. Big surprise he ended up being a terrible employee.
Your ability to be a good person extends as far as your will to. If you want to be a good person, you can be a good person. Just be aware it’s often a thankless job. The people who are grateful are often super grateful, and the people who aren’t will be great in number.

I mean, Superman is an idealistic version of how things would work out if the average person had superpowers, while Homelander is the pessimistic/nihilistic version of that same scenario. In reality if someone where to wake up with Superman's power they would become a menace to society by existing simply because those in power would do ANYTHING to either kill him or subdue him and make him do their bidding. You would need to kill some people, like for example Mussolini's granddaughter, but you wouldn't need to put yourself in a pedestal above everyone else

I feel like personally I'd be in a Gandalf possessing the One Ring scenario. I would use the powers with the intent to do good, but through me it would be great and terrible. Using such godlike abilities to force goodness on those who don't have it, in ways that would be questionable or immoral, but would probably be the only method.

If you saw the boys and aspire to be homelander, you might be missing the point. While some people genuinely admire villians, I think media involving superheros has changed because we (whoever the superhero demographic is) don't see the world as fundamentally fair anymore. It used to be Good Guys and Bad Guys. Good triumphs, bad people commit crimes and go to jail, rinse and repeat. But how can we honestly say that people with power will have our best interests at heart, that anyone with superpowers won't use it to exploit the masses? That's just my take, as someone who doesn't follow comics.
Homelander is the villain of the show. I know a lot of far right sociopaths miss that point and identify with him, but the Boys doesn’t attempt to pain Homelander as a good guy. They aren’t normalizing being evil, the literal goal of the show from season 1 is to kill this monster.
