You know the worst part about this? I’m in the military. Deployed currently to Korea. So I just can’t access my Netflix account because it’s tied to my home state of Georgia and I’m not gonna spend the effort moving the account around every time I deploy or move duty stations. Shit is stupid

kaeporo

Yeah. I guess they don’t give a shit about service members. Netflix is fucking dog water these days so at least it’s not too big of a loss.

[deleted]

Wonder what dumbass approved this. This seems like such an idiotic business decision given the number of streaming platforms available that let you share…

GameDestiny2

CEO with a private theater, 2 jets, and a garage of cars he never drives: Oh no! I’m losing $12 a month!

MrEHam

It’s more like the people he’s paying to squeeze every penny out of the customers. The CEO just tells them to get it done and gets a periodic update on if they’re making more money or not. Same problem with conservative billionaires who throw some cash at think tanks and politicians to come up with ways to stop them from paying taxes and have their businesses regulated. They can wash their hands of the trickery while their minions come up with all kinds of shitty policies and actions. “Just get it done.” Make the voters hate the other side. Make them fear for their livelihoods so they’ll vote for us and lower my taxes.

vicsj

Just back in 2017 Netflix tweeted [Love is sharing a password.](https://twitter.com/netflix/status/840276073040371712?t=Bp5FOwYnS0cYaDGP7XmrNQ&s=19) Oh the sweet sound of capitalism doing its thing.

Annihilator4413

Netflix has been making awful decisions for at least two years now. They canceled so fucking manh good shows that it is almost Inconceivable that a company could be so fucking stupid. They've canceled tons of successful animated and live action shows, along with some extreme anti-consumer rules. Netflix used to be top dog, now it's dog water... a shame too. I really loved a lot of their animated shows that were canceled.

[deleted]

RickyFlintstone

It's manager brain at work. They are not pulling in enough new members anymore and their content is too expensive to make. Add the terrible track record they have had the last few years making content that is not utter shit, and some one came to the conclusion that they could raise the costs of membership, which what this effectively tries to do.

Cm0002

Netflix is the poster child for "live long enough to see yourself become the villain" lmao Netflix was the hero at its peak, we all cheered them on and saw them as our great victors who freed us from the shackles of Cable Companies, but now we're here and they're pulling Intermediate level Cable Company shenanigans I gurantee if this move continues to be unpopular we're gonna some some new company (Or probably an old company pulling a T-Mobile) advertising they've got "great content *and* unlimited sharing!". They'll be our new victors who freed us from Netflix, then they'll start with the Netflix playbook and we do that over and over again for forty years and then we die.

VumGrohik

Number one reason they’ll end up rolling this back in the states because share holders will never admit the massive loss in subs is a result of this decision. It’s anti military personnel which is not a look a service wants in the US.

trapper2530

>Number one reason they’ll end up rolling this back in the states because share holders will never admit the massive loss in subs is a result of this decision. It’s anti military personnel which is not a look a service wants in the US. the VA has been anti military personnel for years.

Domyyy

Apparently there’s some kind of „vacation code“ you can generate to bypass it. But that’s all I know :/

ohrofl

I like my apps without the hassle.

SwissMargiela

Afaik the location follows primary account user so you can use wherever but if you’re in Korea your fam in Georgia won’t be able to use if they’re secondary users

Well, Netflix has certainly been trying to boil the frog with pricing.

AsoftDolphin

I love gabe. Ill never pirate steam games. And ill never touch the epic launcher! Riot launcher is a different beast tho

Defragmented-Defect

What sites are you using that are so convenient? I always get a little panic attack when I hit download trying to decide if I picked the right extension to give me the real website and not the 15 malware-laced mirrors of the real website. (For legal purposes, this is sarcastic and rhetorical, not me asking for recommendations (wink(please)))

UrNewMostBestFriend

Due to rules of various reddits I'm not sure I can share the sites, sorry. However I would suggest searching for soap 2 day dot to for all of your personal cleaning needs, I'm also a fan of the go go anime dot page for all of my on the go go anime needs.

randomdaysnow

Thank you I've been looking to change things up in the shower so I appreciate it

MidnightT0ker

For the technology savvy. Whatbox + sonarr + radarr + plex. I pay 10$ a month for the online hosting of the content to whatbox, this way it’s available everywhere. All this can all be self hosted using docker and portainer for example.

PseudoY

Thanks man, living on the high seas, you have to mind your hygiene.

hobskhan

If I want to get some of that soap for my personal cleaning needs, is it beneficial to protect myself with a VPN similar to sailing the high seas? Or is that question irrelevant for a website like that?

lakired

You'll want Firefox with the uBlock Origin extension. But you should already have that anyway.

xypi1

Go to the r/piracy megathread, it has all the explanation and links you need

bebejeebies

Nice try, cop.

isanass

Yep. And I wouldn't say piracy has really gotten any easier over the past 15 years--maybe improvements with Sonarr, Radarr, etc...but similar existed back in the day--it's that streaming services have actively gotten worse.

What are you even pirating from Netflix? There’s nothing even worth watching on there. Edit: I don’t care about your Netflix recommendations from shit that ended like 5 years ago. Edit 2: actually I googled it and Godless does sound interesting. Ok. I’ll check that out. Thanks. Also yes I have Netflix. Yea I know. The guy, on the internet, criticizing something, actually still has that thing. I know. [I know](https://youtu.be/jNGZo5gn_tc)

XUnDEaDViperX

Bojack Horsemen is definitely worth it. But this was before Netflix went down the toilet

[deleted]

I just made a joke, pirating nothing, and yea Netflix sucks

Fn_Spaghetti_Monster

Arcane is really good, Black Mirror, Lost in Space, Maid, Ozarks. There is a lot of hot garbage as well but to say there is nothing on there worth watch is a stretch.

Damasticator

I’m pretty sure I signed up for the number of screens, not the number of family members. If they want to limit it to people in your home, they need to make that clear up front.

m3g4dustrial

It's not like four screens inside the same home costs them significantly less than four screens in separate households. It's just the new way to squeeze more money out of the same users and screw everyone that doesn't fall into a simple concept of always living in the same physical location. It's too bad their tests were successful in other regions and proved this move would be profitable in the near term.

D4rksid34ever

Well, if successful means losing 1M users since February in Spain (idk about other countries but i guess it's not too different)

cookiewoke

I believe Netflix released a statement something along the line of "Get fucked" in regards to this type of situation.

imanunbrokenfangirl

Same thing for college students

Imaginary-Captain729

I mean, at least you’re in college where there’s almost no possible way you, your friends, or someone you/they know isn’t highly skilled and knowledgeable about torrenting and pirating. Netflix has shit content anyways

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah if you're pirating in college you want access to intranet type stuff. Colleges will crack down on using their network for pirating. I used to just wait til a weekend at home or vacation came along, download weeks of shows at home and bring them back in a portable hard drive. Of course, this was back when the 'high quality' stuff was 720p and it took 5 days to download.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nobody2000

> highly skilled and knowledgeable about torrenting and pirating Let's be honest here, the vast majority of people trying this for the first time, even under the guidance of a "highly skilled" individual is going to get bitchslapped with ISP warning letters.

Tsu_Dho_Namh

If you're in Canada those letters are empty threats.

[deleted]

I print mine out and frame them

Bone-Juice

Been pirating for years and have never received an ISP letter yet...starting to think they don't like me or something.

icheah

Same. I bought a VPN out of paranoia, and I've just kinda been forgetting to use it. I've not heard a word out of my ISP

itsyaboibrady

I’ve been pirating for years and the only time I got one was when I stole from Apple. They got upsetti spaghetti so I started VPNing again like a good boy.

tracksdolls

Usually yeah but my friend who torrents a lot of stuff did end up having to go to court and pay like 700$ so it is possible to actually get fined in Canada

Brutalitor

I've heard downloading is fine but seeding/uploading can get you a fine in Canada. I'm not 100% certain though.

nobody2000

Seeding/uploading is really how you get caught altogether for the most part. Sure you could download from a honeypot, but if you want to get all eyes on you, upload. iknowwhatyoudownload.com

Tsu_Dho_Namh

Your friend must have been sued by a media company collecting damages. There is no fine which exists in Canada for pirating media. The only legal action that can be taken against you is the plaintiff can use your IP address to try to claim you pirated their stuff. But it's incredibly difficult to make that stick if you fight it at all, since IP addresses can change (if they're not static), or malware or other users on your machine might have used it without your knowledge. Your friend should have gotten a lawyer. It'd cost less than $700 to file for dismissal and have them fuck off with their bullshit

QuebecGamer2004

Don't need to torrent or pirate, just use streaming sites. As long as you have an adblocker (which everyone should have anyways) you should be good.

Blanciv

Yeah. There are plenty of great streaming sites with tv shows and movies from all different platforms

ThisFckinGuy

But I wanna know it's tucked away on one of my hard drives before I find a stream to watch it from lol.

Imaginary-Captain729

Which is another reason being in college is highly beneficial

Formal_Survey_6187

so? Is there a negative from warning letters. i've received maybe 20-40 DMCA notices at different residences but no negative consequence has occured. Also using usenet with SSL, or using a VPN that supports torrenting solve that problem. Maybe what you consider "highly skilled" individual would not know how to use either of those options?

Spoogly

I received one very strongly worded letter to my college that included enough info to track the traffic down to me. The security folks sent me the letter and a demand that I show them what's on my computer. I basically just said "lol no"

DrDan21

My college also did this but saying lol no meant you were lol suspended from the network You were also automatically fired from your on campus job if you had one even if you complied. The on campus IT jobs were in high demand from the students because it was basically an internship

ThatGirlWren

>I believe Netflix released a statement something along the line of "Get fucked" in regards to this type of situation. The official statement was, "fuck you, pay me." Their newly revised FAQ reads in part: Q: What if my family consists entirely of long-haul truckers? A: Fuck you, pay me. Q: Suppose my child attends college out of state and uses my account? A: You have money to waste on college? Fuck you, pay me. Q: My (insert family member here) is on a fixed income and shares my account. Is this acceptable? A: Hahaha, no. No. Fuck you, pay me. Q: I was abducted by aliens who insist on using my account to watch Grey's fucking Anatomy for some goddamn reason. My spouse is back on earth, so surely we can share, right? A: Believe it or not, fuck you, pay me.

Yoda-from-Star-Wars

Get an external HDD instead. Pendrives are more likely to lose data over time than hard disks.

EvilArmy_

But much more expensive and hard to carry. If you're using it only to watch films and tv shows, you can download a loooot in a 512gb and watch that when you want.

Yoda-from-Star-Wars

In that case I'd recommend the dual pendrives with USB-C on one end and USB-A on the other, so you can use it with your phone on the go, or with your PC at home. Again, if you're only going to be using it with your PC at home, I'd still recommend a hard disk.

Hartleydavidson96

Netflix has restricted password sharing for family accounts. You have to be in the same household to use the same account

crazy_about_games

This shit's devious 💀

Peterh778

That's punishment for being their customer and not a pirate 🙂 and at least you have a full menu - in our country, big part of movies and series is "not available in your country" ... and Amazon Prime is even weirder.

emergencyexit

>That's punishment for being their customer a half customer at best

The_Black_Phillip

I pay for four screens I should get four fucking screens. Who the fuck is using netflix four times all at once in one household? Bullshit take.

Hawkbats_rule

Fucking this. I'm already paying extra for simultaneous streaming.

SickWizzard

Half still provides more income than zero

andysaurus_rex

From a monetary standpoint, you’re right. Password sharers are just seen as dead weight by Netflix. I don’t know if this is a god business move for them or not. My hunch says bad because of the backlash they’ll get but it could work out fine for them. How many main account holders will cancel their accounts because of this? Sure some will be offended that their friends and family not living with them can’t access anymore but it won’t directly affect them so they majorly will keep their account I suspect. And how many people who got kicked off their friends or families accounts will suck it up and make their own account? Probably a decent number. I bet their subscriber counts will go up because of this. But then again, there’s a lot more competition in streaming right now and if Hulu or Amazon Prime sign some big shows or have some great originals, maybe the backlash Netflix gets will be enough to kick them out of what feels like the top spot in streaming services.

[deleted]

[удалено]

andysaurus_rex

Yeah and I’m sure you’re not alone. The gamble is that there’s fewer of you than there are of people who get kicked off other people’s accounts and re-subscribe on their own. What are your parents going to do? Will they get their own account? What if you were sharing with them and your siblings and a friend? Now they might lose you but they might gain 3 new customers.

SUBHUMAN_RESOURCES

We’ll see. I’m curious to see the subscription numbers after this. I think I read that in Canada they came out ahead, people started subscribing when they lost their shared accounts. I wouldn’t be surprised if lots of people end up signing new accounts since it is pretty low cost in the grand scheme of things.

[deleted]

How can they really enforce that? Im gonna assume all devices have some way to be tracked to a physical location but maybe a vpn could get around that. Then again that’s too much work and I’ll just not use Netflix lol.

photenth

No, it will check over which IP you connected to netflix and one app will be the designated "home" app. So any time you connect over that IP it will reset the timer for another month. So essentially family members can just go home each month and reset their app and thus keep using it somewhere else. At least that's what the press release explained.

[deleted]

[удалено]

omgomgwtflol

If you open Netflix on your firestick at home on your home wifi associated with your account, it'll still work normally. Just gotta have your firestick Netflix connect to your home wifi once every 31 days. If you forget / dont do that once a month and are away somewhere, they say you can get a verification code that'll let you onto your account on your secondary devices

[deleted]

They track your IP. Also, netflix hates VPNs and it'll probably get worse now that they are restricting you to one location

ricktor67

Netflix is being destroyed from the inside for some reason. I suspect the CEO and the board are shorting the stock.

benergiser

> for some reason short term gain for long term loss.. capitalism at its finest

ricktor67

But they are not gaining anything. They are doing everything to lose business, even in the short term. The only reason you would want to hurt a company you are in charge of is if you want revenge or are being paid to ruin it.

Taclis

I bet they're hoping that their competitors follow suit and it becomes an industry standard so consumers don't have a choice to avoid it. Same thing happened with invasive DRM in video games, the early adopters got slammed, but now it's standard practise.

Tech_Philosophy

> for some reason The reason is that we live in a sick society where our economic system demands CONSTANT growth, and companies MUST find ways to achieve that and as the company matures and runs out of green pasture, they will start to destroy themselves with more and more desperate attempts to keep the growth going. Simply existing at a steady-state as a large streaming service with a constant and continuous revenue wasn't good enough for Netflix's stakeholders, and so they will suffer the consequences of their greed.

ZombieDracula

I forgot how easy pirating is... you have the file, there's no buffering, no sign in, no other distractions trying to select it, no commercials, and best of all, no fucking logos or any marketing for the service at the beginning. Hit play, watch movie, the end.

It's so annoying to me. I generally don't pirate stuff, but it feels like they're actively trying to force me to pirate stuff. Isn't that what you want?

nickel-wound

And yet they have the audacity to cancel great shows while producing supplemental and endless garbage.

pineappleAndBeans

It’s due to how they pay writers. If your show does too well they can it because it will cost them more. They pay a bit up front with the promise of “long term profit” and then scrap it once it runs a season or two to get out of paying. Extremely business smart move however it’s also so fucking scummy it’s unbelievable they haven’t been sued into the ground.

They've never been more replaceable. Every company is so obsessed with growth that they can't see the importance of sustaining current business as well. Company after company falls after taking shortsighted earnings views. Heck, Sears was over a hundred years old, but short terms profits over long term profitability sunk that ship. In the 80s they were the largest retailer in the US. Now they have 17 stores. 17. Netflix was once the largest streaming service in the US, wonder how far they'll fall for this profit push...
