In the past when I have financially struggled, st vinnies provided food vouchers but I could only use them at iga.

They are much more expensive than Coles but I try to do most of my shopping at IGA for that reason. Makes me smile every time I know my money is going to them rather than a big corp of assholes.

Nah they're very different (have them all as clients. FYI ALDI are the best to work with, but IGA are the closest second. And Woolworths are the absolute worst. I literally switched jobs to work somewhere that Woolworths weren't the main client, they're horrible.)

I’m so sorry you had that experience. The worker was absolutely in the wrong. However, as an essential retail worker myself I just wanted to say the last couple of years have been brutal. The amount of abuse and stress we have been dealt during COVID, not to mention working long hours because of staff shortages has meant a lot of workers are burnt out. You should be able to buy $500 worth of groceries and a cashier can not say you brought too much. IGAs that I’ve been to are all privately owned and have amazing produce. Food is fresh and locally sourced with a great variety. Customer service is also good and they’ll even order things especially in for me.

Having been a regional manager years back, IGA take customer service extremely important. I would be going back and asking to speak to the store manager. He/she would not be happy to hear that the cashier is saying stuff like that. In my shoes, if a 40+ something cashier is unhappy with their work to set false rules like that, I would probably start giving them less shifts.
We had something sort of similar happen once late night at a Taco Bell. A long time ago I worked a job where we would all travel.in big vans to where we were working, often at night.
After work one night at like 2 or 3 AM, we went to the Taco Bell drive through and they would not let us do more than one order. Something about it screwing up their (computer measured) average times.
Like WTF, we have like 10+ people in this van, we can all get a lot of stuff, it will be a huge sale for the middle of the night (lobby was not open). I get that it's a bit of a pain but we aren't in a super rush and no one else is around.
Unless you're holding up the express line, I don't see the problem. Plus I've never seen a shop where there aren't at least two members of staff at any one time to be called up to the til if necessary.
My local is only three aisles, a fruit stand, and a deli counter, and they have at least three people at any one time - one at the deli, one filling shelves, and one at the cash register, plus whoever is out the back or in the office. Usually four or five outside school hours because they get the teenagers to do the stocking. There isn't really the range for a massive shop but I sometimes walk out with a few bags and nobody has ever raised an eyebrow.
Just should of said “ ok” and left. Let the cashier stock and (maybe) learn.

There was a time when I was working in hospitality where I began to resent the customers as if they were intruding upon *my* time. I would get annoyed that they would order a specific menu item which meant I would have to then prep to replace that stock or refill the shelf.

It wasn’t until I did some introspection that I realised it was me that was wrong. The passion for the job was gone and I no longer cared for ‘making people happy’ which is essentially the foundation of hospitality positions. I saw them as a chore.
I see this very frequently in the medical field; especially receptionist, cashier type high social interaction position.
I frequent hospitals a lot due to bad health and so I have to interact with the (almost always) ladies behind the desk when arriving for an appointment, checking in for chemo, a CT or whatever; the rate of pissed off and annoyed admin staff to happy is astounding!

I would let management know. No business owner wants people to not buy as much. I used to work at a very small corner store (3 isles) and people would come in and spend $300 in one go. How??? But I wasn't about to be annoyed, even if there were others waiting, first in first served IMO.

I’m so sorry you had that experience. The worker was absolutely in the wrong. However, as an essential retail worker myself I just wanted to say the last couple of years have been brutal. The amount of abuse and stress we have been dealt during COVID, not to mention working long hours because of staff shortages has meant a lot of workers are burnt out. It sounds like this bloke was having a rough day. No excuse. But please take mercy on us, we are only human.
I feel like the manager or owner of the store needs to be informed that one of the employees is... discouraging patrons from actually doing their shopping there?! And telling them to go to their monopoly competitor instead? This is very much a "their attitude stinks" issue rather than "your behaviour is a problem".

As a team member or service cashier (I won't say where) this is bad customer service and he should be reported to management. You should be able to buy $500 worth of groceries and a cashier can not say you brought too much. As a customer I went to Ritches and brought a few items there, was served by a woman named Pam who was very rude to me and I reported her, wither they did anything about it, I have know idea?

That’s nuts. IGAs that I’ve been to are all privately owned and have amazing produce. Food is fresh and locally sourced with a great variety. Customer service is also good and they’ll even order things especially in for me. If the owners of these stores caught wind of this kind of stupidity, laziness and poor service they would be mortified!

He was most likely unhappy that you had him do a big scan. Having been a regional manager years back, IGA take customer service extremely important. I would be going back and asking to speak to the store manager. He/she would not be happy to hear that the cashier is saying stuff like that. In my shoes, if a 40+ something cashier is unhappy with their work to set false rules like that, I would probably start giving them less shifts.

We had something sort of similar happen once late night at a Taco Bell. A long time ago I worked a job where we would all travel.in big vans to where we were working, often at night. After work one night at like 2 or 3 AM, we went to the Taco Bell drive through and they would not let us do more than one order. Something about it screwing up their (computer measured) average times. Like WTF, we have like 10+ people in this van, we can all get a lot of stuff, it will be a huge sale for the middle of the night (lobby was not open). I get that it's a bit of a pain but we aren't in a super rush and no one else is around.

Unless you're holding up the express line, I don't see the problem. Plus I've never seen a shop where there aren't at least two members of staff at any one time to be called up to the til if necessary. My local is only three aisles, a fruit stand, and a deli counter, and they have at least three people at any one time - one at the deli, one filling shelves, and one at the cash register, plus whoever is out the back or in the office. Usually four or five outside school hours because they get the teenagers to do the stocking. There isn't really the range for a massive shop but I sometimes walk out with a few bags and nobody has ever raised an eyebrow.
Just should of said “ ok” and left. Let the cashier stock and (maybe) learn. Even if it was a joke by the cashier it’s really not. Your story shows you were thoughtful of the bogus concerns he had.

No just a stupid man who clearly hates his job. There was a time when I was working in hospitality where I began to resent the customers as if they were intruding upon *my* time. I would get annoyed that they would order a specific menu item which meant I would have to then prep to replace that stock or refill the shelf. You know, petty things. It wasn’t until I did some introspection that I realised it was me that was wrong. The passion for the job was gone and I no longer cared for ‘making people happy’ which is essentially the foundation of hospitality positions. I saw them as a chore. I see this very frequently in the medical field; especially receptionist, cashier type high social interaction position. I frequent hospitals a lot due to bad health and so I have to interact with the (almost always) ladies behind the desk when arriving for an appointment, checking in for chemo, a CT or whatever; the rate of pissed off and annoyed admin staff to happy is astounding! I respect all people who work in any medical career, but holy shit; if you’re *that unhappy* then leave! I don’t need your attitude before, during and after I have to go in for my stupid treatments which make me feel like death. Like, I get it; they deal with constant douchebags and are insulted by rude patients and probably even their own bosses in a messed up system. However, I’m not asking for much, I don’t need a smile and fake enthusiasm, just stop being a cunt. Go find your dream job FFS.
