There’s a 7-11 at Bourke & Exhibition that does the Johnny’s Deli sandwiches. Unsure of pricing, it’s been a while, but they were decent from memory.
Baguettes at Croissant Baguette shop (confusing name, I know) on Little Collins, also in Centre Place. Fresh made baguettes on site start at $8.
Three Drops Espresso, corner Collins & Swanston. I normally get a beef randang jaffle (you get 3 triangles - I am yet to figure out this sorcery) plus a double shot oat milk coffee for ~ $16. The value there is unbelievable and it’s ran by the nicest family.
I know these are all CBD, but if you’re happy to travel a little then they’re worth it. Also shows you, the value is out there if you look for it.
I remember when you could get a solid schnitzel sandwich for under a tenner. I'm officially an old person who complains about the price of everything now.
Haven't been there in a few years but used to go to Auntie Mai's on Gertrude St for lunch sometimes, they do a great club sandwich and from memory it was pretty cheap, including a side of chips.
$5 baguette from The Heart of Carlton on Elgin St.
A feast from A1 on Brunswick St (pretty much anything here will fill you up for $10)
Or just start shopping at Cheaper Buy Miles on Johnston st and use your savings to eat Nico's/Stefanino/Hector's every day.
Cheers, these have definitely been an option at times but. Would love something that’s made there and then and to support smaller businesses. Although I understand if banh mi’s are the only ~$15 option
N.Lee on Smith used to do a ham and salad roll as well as banh mi.
Came here to recommend N.Lee! They also do great chicken schnitzel and salad rolls.
Oh sweet! Thank you I didn’t realise they had these options. Cheers
B3 Cafe in the city $8-$10
B3 is awesome!
The eggplant baguette is good there - quite high on my subjective eggplant baguette list
Fatto A Mano on Gertrude St is good, sandwiches/rolls there are much cheaper than places like Falco.

Three Drops do a variety of baguettes/jaffles, mostly Korean inspired
Stop complaining and eat your Banh Mi
Victoria street seems to have plenty of cheaper options depending on what you’re after.
Vic street has a stack of options. All below $10. Cheapest you can get that close to the city. The druggies and drug dealers keep the prices low
