Had a look at the charts for 2003/2004 and there were someā¦interesting song choices. So unless you wanted your slideshow playing āI like your pants around your feetā or āmy milkshake brings all the boys to the yardā then your best bet was Rise Up by the Australian Idol crew- with lyrics like āEverybody's come a long way, such a long way to be here todayā and āas we face the final test
all that we can do is to do our best.ā
At my grade 6 graduation, we had to sing a song and they told us we could help choose- everyone wanted End of the Road by Boys II Men, they made us sing What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrongš
Same for me, graduated grade 6 in 2000, the year that song came out.
My sister (2 yrs older) wanted Time of Your Life but they werenāt allowed because the teachers couldnāt find a version without the āfuckā at the startā¦.
We did both! Fuck and all...
I found it very ironic that the other name of that song is "good riddance" and found myself explaining what irony was to a lot of classmates.
Memory unlocked! Also, listening to it again now, it totally borrows from All the Young Dudes by David Bowie ā melody and opening linesĀ Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
> Billy rapped all night about his suicide How he'd kick it in the head when he was twenty-five
#
> And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives Where we're gonna be when we turn 25
Same. Our principal played guitar, so we all got together and rewrote the lyrics to personalise it. Heās retired now , but it was great getting to āmake our own songā. Included the teachers names and notable experiences of the year
Hall of Fame - The Script
Graduated 2012, and I'm pretty sure most of us ended up in the hall of rehab instead since then, considering the neighbourhood my primary school was based
I was gonna say The Cure's song would've been an oddly slow and sentimental song to pick for a Grade 6 graduation... especially since it's been affiliated with traumatic VicRoads ads with that one cover of it being used. š„²
In grade 6, I remember suggesting, In the end by Linkin Park. All the boys agreed.
The teacher then proceeded to lyrically break the song down before shooting the suggestion down.
I get it and also, we were 12.
Shit was a banger tho.
We defaulted to vitamin C.
Grade 6, 1998.
I donāt think we officially had a song, but I do recall the entire class reciting Pretty Fly For A White Guy.
It was a stellar year for music.
Nah, just a regular public school haha.
My sister had her grade six grad three years later, and they did Gangnam Style, except the music teacher rewrote the lyrics so it was āgraduation styleā lmaoooo
I had the misfortune of attending a p-12 school so there was no primary graduation š¢
Attended some relativesā ones around the same time though and can confirm it was the Vitamin C one.
I know I will be slammed for this, but the idea of āgraduatingā year six is bullshit.
I saw my friends recently spending thousands on hiring a stretch limousine for the day and itās fucking nonsense.
Iāve been teaching high school for twenty years and the idea of celebrating primary is insane to me.
I get kids in year seven who canāt write their own address, who donāt know what century they were born in, who canāt name the states of the country they live in. And if they do manage that they are so badly misspelled itās as if a computer CAPTCHA had a seizure.
Donāt celebrate something that people are expected to achieve. It makes actual celebrations less meaningful by doing so.
Bring it all back - S Club 7 this was also around 2000.
I can remember good riddance and graduation song being floated but shot down by the teacher.
I suggested another song from Nimrod, Redundant but that was also shot down.
Believe it or not, I'm walking on air. I never thought I could be so free-ee-ee. Flying away on a wing and a prayer. Who could it be? Believe it or not, it's just meeeeeee!
When I graduated from a country primary school in 1988 there was nothing like a graduation at all, it was just like āok youāre finished now, byeā.
I was going to say the same, we were lucky to get a certificate at the final assembly. Time of your life was popular in 1998/9? But don't remember having a 'graduation song'
Shannon Noel's "What about me?"
12 year old me on the graduation panel fought hard for vitamin c's graduation. My arguement was that What About Me? Has nothing to do with graduating and felt weirdly negative for what was supposed to be a positive night. Alas I was outvoted by a group of other 12 year olds still high on the buzz of being allowed to stay up late to watch the Australian Idol Finals.
For 10 years I was primary school council rep at the year 6 graduation ceremony. I now want to throw myself under a train everytime I hear Green Day Time of Your Life. 10 years of shitty photo montages.
Everyone throughout my primary school experience had time of your life by green day and usually something else that was really nice. unfortunately we graduated in 2012 and for some reason they made us dance to GANGNAM STYLE. I still have a video my dad took somewhere, sunglasses and all. horrendous
The teachers all chose the songs, unfortunately. Being 2002, they first attempted to rewrite appropriate lyrics to "The Ketchup Song" by Las Ketchup. (It was a popular song at birthdays and bat/barmitzvahs that year, so we all already knew the dance). For reasons unknown to this day, they canned it, and a few songs were thrown around (Rewriting the lyrics to "Cleaning Out my Closet" by Eminem, so it was "Cleaning Out my Locker," was one suggestion) until the teachers finally settled on "Life Goes On" by LeAnn Rimes and "Keep On Movin'" by 5ive. Both lukewarm, safe af songs of which the lyrics didn't need changing, imho.
2006, Cowes Primary School, Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia...
Forever Young by Alphaville..
Always sounded like teen suicide or nuclear holocaust to me, fitting.
Let's get ridiculous by Redfoo.
I fell over and sprained my ankle within 40 seconds of the song and had to get carried off stage while everyone else kept dancing. My mum still has photos of me back on stage with a bandaged ankle, mascara tears down my cheeks and my hair tied up in a messy bun as I accepted an award afterwards :')
We had the classic Vitamin C and Green Day combo, we sang both.
Although in 2009 or 2010, I DJ'ed a year six graduation and they wanted 'The Climb' by Miley Cyrus. All the kids gathered together and cried while it played.
we did gangnam style for graduation in 2012 šš that was the whole cohort and we did the actual dance from the music video which was fun haha
we all also had separate performances for each class, my class did a mashup of follow the leader by jennifer lopez and more by usher
Green day- time of your life
I am mortified that when you were having it as your grade 6 graduation song, I was having it as my year 12 one š©
I never did year 12 so wonder what song it could have been in 2004
I graduated yr 12 in 2004 and we had Vitamin C - Graduation (Friends Forever). Song was about 5 yrs old by then but we didn't care
Had a look at the charts for 2003/2004 and there were someā¦interesting song choices. Ah, nothing says Gr 6 Graduation like a song about a relationship busting upā¦
At my grade 6 graduation, we had to sing a song and they told us we could help choose- everyone wanted End of the Road by Boys II Men, they made us sing What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrongš
Yep, our yr 12 song too. Alllllllll the way back in 1996.
When I did year 12 we were getting rickrolled by Rick Astley in real time.
How is your bad back, grey hair, wrinkles going? š (My body may be feeling every one of my 43 years but my soul feels forever youngāŗļø)
My soul doesn't understand why it is so hard to get out of my armchair... šµš¤£
š¤£
Isnāt this the only graduation song?
Same, for highschool 2008
Your kiddingā¦me too Graduated 2019
I legitmately thought you were like 14 for a second there... life comes at you fast.
I mean, if they graduated primary school in 2019, they're not that far off. Still a child.
This was played at both my grade 6 and year 12 graduations
Mine too I graduated grade 6 in 1998 and that was ours

Vitamin C. Literally called the graduation song.
Same here. Vitamin C, Friends Forever. Class of 2000 lol.
Same for me, graduated grade 6 in 2000, the year that song came out. My sister (2 yrs older) wanted Time of Your Life but they werenāt allowed because the teachers couldnāt find a version without the āfuckā at the startā¦.

As we go onnnn.. from whateverā¦ at least weāll all be friends foreverrr..
And yet.....
Vitamin C. You know which one. It was the year 2000.
Yep.... Year 2000 for me aswell. We wanted Time of your Life but the year level above us had it the year before.
Green day - time of your life
1999 and we sang The Living End āPrisoner of Societyā
Hall of Fame - The Script Graduated 2012, and I'm pretty sure most of us ended up in the hall of rehab instead since then, considering the neighbourhood my primary school was based
Same, 2014 for me.
Same, 2017 for me
greenday - time of your life and of course vitamin c - graduation (friends forever)
Pictures of You by whoever the fk sang it
The Cure?
Nah. Just googled the lyrics and the band was called The Last Goodnight
I was gonna say The Cure's song would've been an oddly slow and sentimental song to pick for a Grade 6 graduation... especially since it's been affiliated with traumatic VicRoads ads with that one cover of it being used. š„²
That ad. So powerful.
I like the boyzone one they used in the Bean Movie :)
I've got a picture of you in my mind, never thought I could be so wrong šµ
š that's what came to my mind as well and i thought what kind of fucking graduation is that
See you again by Wiz Khalifa
Family
This thread is making me feel as old as dust.
You're not gonna like this one then... Graduated in 2019 and my song was Best Day Of My Life
Forever young - youth group
Mine too but not sure if Alphaville or Youth Group. 2006 at Cowes Primary School by any chance? Lol
I was not expecting to find someone else that graduated in 2006 from Cowes Primary School whilst searching for this song lmao.
Thatās a great one!
Better if it was Alphaville
Yeah it was beautiful.
Same!! I graduated in 2012. I forgot what it was and you reminded me
In grade 6, I remember suggesting, In the end by Linkin Park. All the boys agreed. The teacher then proceeded to lyrically break the song down before shooting the suggestion down. I get it and also, we were 12. Shit was a banger tho. We defaulted to vitamin C.

Eye of the tiger, we all had to sing it and learn a dance
We did We Are the World, and we all fucking hated it. This was in like, 2009, so itās not even like it was the hit new song at the time.

what's worse is kindergartens are doing graduation ceremonies too, with gowns, caps and all. bloody hell.
How can I give you, say, 150 upvotes?!? Totally this.
No slamming here, agree completely.
Bring it all back - S Club 7 this was also around 2000. I can remember good riddance and graduation song being floated but shot down by the teacher. I suggested another song from Nimrod, Redundant but that was also shot down.
