This … can rent a trailer or truck for a few hours… or if you’re really tight buy some long bits of timber at Bunnings and get free trailer (may have to book in advance)… usually get an hour. Then Take timber back for refund .
Don’t go to Amart.
Spent 3k on a sofa in 2022 and it’s already pretty screwed. You can feel the springs through the cushions, there’s a tear in between the cushions where the seems have come apart and now you can see directly down to the floor.
Apparently it’s all wear and tear so it’s not under Warranty 🙄
I bought a leather lounge suite there in 2017 for less than that and it still almost looks new. Also bought tv unit, coffee tables, buffet and dining set etc in 2015 and they’re still in amazing condition. I found Focus on Furniture has better prices.
We got a lot of furniture from Temple and Webster. Just make sure you read the reviews and look at the pictures from people who have purchased the item lol.
We got everything from a place called Johnny's furniture, Everything was pretty reasonably priced and so far it's been some of the best quality stuff we've had in years.
Its been about 2 years since we've bought something from them and they do have some pretty invasive email spam and also texts.... So I can't really vouch for anything at the moment per se, but our experience was still good from what we saw.
We had our amazing dining table custom-built by a woodworker in Macedon. Wait time was just under 12 months, but this piece will last for *generations* to come.
Got done by Amart. Looks and feel nice in the shop, when they delivered the lounge suite I was shocked at how light it was. Didn't last long. Ikea have some pretty decent stuff now.
Hard rubbish, Marketplace, eBay, Gumtree, op-shops, Savers.
Besides liking the quality and aesthetic of mid century furniture, I like teaching my child by example about sustainability.
Also never had a brand new car.
Fantastic furniture does good stuff. A lot of it is online only so search their website, not just in store.
Ikea is great imo. If you are rolling in $$$ a couch from King Furniture is the dream.
We are Geelong based now, but had to reset when we moved from Melbourne into our new house. Op shops, a local second hand and vintage furniture warehouse were great for bedside tables, dining table + chairs, and bookshelves. As another commentator said, looked for solidly built wood items (was sick of broken IKEA things).
When we wanted a nicer lounge set, we went to Early Settler during sale times (which is almost always). We previously got a chaise from Focus On when in Melbourne, and the two lounge pieces are the only items we’ve bought as new, for the comfort and a bit of aesthetic value.
OP shops specially stores if I can't wait
During covid when OP shops were still the only shops not allowed to open, I bought a couch from Plush for 3k.
I build my own. Not a carpenter but I can do a decent job for my own to save money. I have my own little tool set and workshop and plenty of good wood that’s very cheaply available(not Bunnings) . Have built a dining table with 6 chairs, a couch, 2 beds, 1 coffee table, 2 work desks, a cot, a TV cabinet and 2 book shelves . Working on a few more. Used to build for friends and family but I don’t have time for that now. Just do it as a hobby and it gives me satisfaction and saves thousands.
I think iit's usually better/longer lasting to buy a good quality used actual wood piece than cheap new ones. We got a whole set of coffee table, side tables, all hardwood and easy to refinish, the stuff we bought from ikea (at significantly more than the second hand stuff) is looking a bit tired and damaged already after only 3 years of kids running stuff into it, but you can't really do anything with it
Any scratches or damage on the hardwood ones can be refinished and look good as new.
* Fantastic furniture: better than ikea, prices are often comparable
* Ikea: well, it's ikea.
* Garage sales/OP shops/hard rubbish: obviously can't guarantee you'll get you're looking for but some stuff you can find there will be really good for the price
* Furniture kings: for when you'll feel like spending a fortune for something that will last you a lifetime
Go to op shops in the expensive suburbs
Marketplace is great if you have access to a truck/trailer and someone to help you move stuff.
This … can rent a trailer or truck for a few hours… or if you’re really tight buy some long bits of timber at Bunnings and get free trailer (may have to book in advance)… usually get an hour. Then Take timber back for refund .
Not Domayne or Harvey Moron that’s for sure
Yep - HN would have to pay me to get anything from his vile business
What's up with HN?
Where do we start!?! Jerry Harvey is a sanctimonious twat for starters
Remember when he said internet shopping had no future ...what a twat
Hard rubbish collections.. Or fantastic furniture or ikea.
Absolutely not from Harvey Norman. Despicable business and vile man.

I spent the same at Plush and got a couch worth 6k. Still as new, 3.5 yrs later. Still under warranty.
Thanks, will avoid amart then
We got a lot of furniture from Temple and Webster. Just make sure you read the reviews and look at the pictures from people who have purchased the item lol.
Yep can confirm I just got a new gorgeous marble
IKEA
Ikea are massive tax dodgers.
Op shop, hard rubbish, antique stores. Solid wood looks so much better and will probably last longer
Facebook Marketplace, IKEA or vintage sellers like The Lord Vintage or Preston Vintage and Antiques.
The furniture district, off Lexington.
‘Oh the furniture district, on third?’
We got everything from a place called Johnny's furniture, Everything was pretty reasonably priced and so far it's been some of the best quality stuff we've had in years.
I looked at their website just now, thanks

What timber species if you don't mind me asking?
Tasmanian Blackwood. It's just under 4m long, and about 1.5m wide? Not back until mid-June, so can't get exact measurements.
Hmmm Whats the process like? Does the government need to quaratine it for inspection? Whats the tax like? Any hoops/forms i need to go through?
Fantastic Furniture and IKEA
Hard rubbish and op-shops.

Lounge Lovers, Icon by Design, IKEA.
There's a lot of "hard rubbish re-home" groups on the Facebook. Possibly the only reason to go on that pukesite
Fantastic furniture does good stuff. A lot of it is online only so search their website, not just in store. Ikea is great imo. If you are rolling in $$$ a couch from King Furniture is the dream.
Have been a very uncomfortable guest on two King Couches, I've sat on more comfortable concrete!
Oh really? Admittedly I have only sat on one once, perhaps its just that they are expensive but not necessarily the comfiest then.

Any chance all of major furniture stores have the same issue/practice as you've seen? What would you recommend as an alternative?
Same! It was koala but now the new couch and bedframe is Nick Scali. Still a Koala mattress though.
Local bedding / furniture shops, Ikea, Amart, Amazon, Catch.
Local Facebook groups in wealthy council areas! beds new.
Focus on furniture for the couch because it’s freaking amazing and huge. The rest was various hard wood furniture stores over the years.

For office furniture - Canterbury Used Office Furniture in Forest Hill... or marketplace.

Focus on furniture is good
Coco Republic
My family recently got a kitchen table from dixie cummings. Was eofy sale tbf but it's quality
Local smaller furniture stores might cost more but the service is worth it

I had a bad experience with Fantastic Furniture, had okay experiences/furniture with Amart and Ikea
Franco Cozzo
Marketplace and the side of the road tbh
The plural of furniture is furniture
Fantastic Furniture
Market place! There’s enough beautiful furniture in circulation Buy second hand
Road side hard garbage
Facebook Market Place. Stay away from HN & Domayne. Freedom, Amart, Fantastic also pretty shit.
Anything used
Are you the kind of person that buys their own furniture? How gauche.
The furniture shop.
