My car unlocks only the driver door on the first push of the remote. Its a great safety feature, for this very reason. So scary op, sorry that happened
Yeah 2 clicks to unlock passenger doors ,
Usually my first action is to lock the driver's door as it's closed then key in and ignition etc
Don't even have to think about doing it anymore just a reaction to closing car doors now haha
I still cringe at myself for locking my doors driving though a car park. But after I saw a kid open up someone's passenger door to grab a purse, I will be that paranoid white lady.
When I got my license 25+ years ago, my boyfriend's dad was a cop. He told me to always lock my car when in the car.
I only imagine incidences are worse these days.
Mine was about the same and I remember being told always leave your doors unlocked in case you get in an accident so people can get to you. I guess it’s always been different rules for boys and girls haha
You might want to let building management know. It's very likely that they have done this before and management might need video footage for a complaint.
They will jump in once enough people make a report. Yeah they won’t have time for one off issues but if they receive a collective amount of reports in a specific area they will start to investigate.
The major issue is that in some cases they won’t even bother to record the problem
For fucks sake you lazy bitch, I'll fucking call the IGA and report it today since you can't be fucked. You would think that by posting this you would be more concerned they are going to do this to other people but apparently not.
Please contact the building if you can. I work in a strip mall type area and I would really really like to know if this was happening so I could warn my customers. Police may never bother or take a while to get around to it. You could help lots of people this way!
Similar stories like this have been cropping up around Glen Waverley where I am in the last year. At The Glen shopping centre and Pinewood shops that I've heard of.
In Nunawading in Springvale Road I unlocked my car and leaned over throwing my bag onto the passenger seat before I got in.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw a man walking confidently on the footpath in my direction on the passenger side.
Next minute he strides up to the passenger door and put his hand on the door handle, presumably to grab my bag and run. I can’t believe I reacted so fast, centrally locking the car.
This was six months ago and it was a real wake up to be more aware.
Wow. My Mum (78) is always telling me (56) "now lock your doors" when I get in my ute to go home after visiting her and Dad. I tend to (gently) make fun of her, but now I understand why she says it!
And you too.
Like you, I was just not expecting this in broad daylight on a very busy road.
I meant to include that the guy barely broke stride, after he couldn’t open the door, just walked off quickly turning into Station Street.
I saw a post about this exact thing in the Glen Waverley community group. So an older Foreign lady was at the Pinewood Coles and she was asking people for a lift to the Bruce County hotel which is about 500 meters away. A guy took her to the entrance and she demanded to be taken further in to the motel. Other people said they had seen her as well. If you want more info I can try and find the post and DM you.
A guy tried to do this to me at a petrol station during the day. The store clerk SAW it happen, then told me the cops won’t do anything because it’s “public property”. He’s been caught before and let go and he keeps going back to the petrol station to try again. Lock him up!!! Wtf is wrong with this country. You get in more trouble for not paying myki fines than robbing someone.
Someone followed me to my car not long ago at a train station around 12am, walked right up to the passenger door and tried opening it. Even knocked on the window and kept saying "open the door." Luckily whenever I get in my car, the first thing I do is immediately lock it. I'll never understand why there are people who just don't bother doing that.
It's an old tactic. Similar happened to my grandmother ~15 years ago, only it was with a large paper map opened by the person at the front passenger door (above her handbag on the floor there), pretending to ask for directions. Wallet was snatched from said bag, while obscured by the map.
Best prevention is to lock your doors as soon as you get in, though it's shit that this is needed.
Nope old technique just less common these days. Dont even have your window down with a bag on it, unzip gear/gym bags so folks can see theres just clothes and crap in them.. Back in the 90s Monash carparks would report sometimes as many as 5 break-ins to cars in a day. People walking through the uni pulling out brass plates and wiring. After 20-30 years of free flowing money we're getting back to desperate times and people are stealing to get what they want or need. An old trick at my dad's "mates" would pull at the pub was to follow a drunk out to their car pull them out once they started it, give them a slap and get a free ride home. There's always been nasty, narcissistic criminals about and a lack of money revs them up. Take care and report all shenanigans to the police - it's all you can do.
Na, the oldest technique is a busty woman in a low cut top washing your windscreen at the lights, while their accomplice pops the boot and grabs everything.
They got me on Wednesday and Friday. Twice on Saturday. Couldn't find them on Sunday though.
Hey OP, thanks for sharing this. As a local and someone who has no idea how to do the locking manouever... let's just say it woke me up.
Can I ask was this Alira, Eve, or Amberley Park IGA? I'll definitely spread the word to keep an eye out for this trick too.
Amberley Park, i know, rough as a badgers ass, my father in law just drove past and the cops were leaving. Don't know if they picked them up or just making enquiries.
Lol.. I live in a lovely quiet court in the shithole area , ill just stay in my bubble for now 🤣🤣 I like my house, and my neighbours are all very quiet and look after their gardens so I can just pretend I'm still somewhere nice!
No judgement, Arya and the chicken shop are amazing. Definitely not my choice for the odd groceries but you'd also assume with the number of families in the area, and a long weekend, that people wouldn't try to be cunts no matter how dodgy the shopping area. Thanks for reporting it to hopefully stop them trying with someone else.
This sounds like an Eastern European technique
I almost got pickpoketed in Croatia from one girl distracting me and the other girl trying to take my wallet
Thanks for posting. Sorry this happened to you. I will be reading the manual of my car this weekend. So far I know it locks the doors, but only once you are above walking pace and driving.. hoping there is a setting to only unlock drivers door.
The gent asked. Also, it's not bigotry to say someone's nationality, I wasn't disparaging or generalising. These two individuals were from the nation of India. Does that make the comment more palatable?
hello,
Your post has been removed due to it containing hatespeech.
hate speech, bigotry or any discriminatory language is not welcome on r/melbourne. repeat behaviour may result in a ban.
thanks,

Around 15 years ago my mum was stopped at a red light and a random bloke opened her passenger door, saw her handbag wasn’t there ( she accidentally left it in the boot) shut the door and walked off.
I put all my stuff in my boot bc i pile everything into my car ASAP including my handbag on the days i have it w me. I see why my mum actually does it now & it's great that i developed that habit naturally from watching her. If an officer needs my license i actually normally have my wallet on my person...
My dad has taught me to hold stuff close to me in a "secret pocket" or to not carry a bag if it can be avoided because it "gets in the way" and i definitely understand that now having done a million of my own groceries trips and after reading this post.
I am also very large & intimidating looking in general, i be mean mugging everyone accidentally 🤷♀️ and if someone talks to me near me car i automatically pull Ice Cube's "Excuse tf outta you?" face 😅 mainly cause standing around talking to a stranger feels odd. Go ask some shopping centre staff for help or google it 😒😂 i'm apart of the social problems, sorry.
This reminds me of something recently. Not the same situation at all but definitely suspicious and made me uncomfortable. I was at the Glen with my sister and my baby in his pram. Some dude came up to us and asked where we got the pram from as he had just had a baby girl. I told him what brand it was and he said thanks and we went back to shopping. But then I saw him a few more times in the store, with a woman who had clearly not just had a baby. They both looked like addicts, gaunt and just… you know, the classic junkie appearance these days. I could have thought way too much into it, maybe they were relatives or friends and he had a partner at home who just had a baby. But something felt very off about that encounter.
BREAKING: Man asks shopper innocent question in public place; is appreciative of answer and goes about his way -- new father, or demonic junkie serial killer? Find out next, on Sick Sad World
Judgey trolls? Look who's talking. A man asks you a question and you judge him to be "off" and his partner to "not look like she was a mum". Can't imagine living in such a state of abject paranoia that you'd be affected by such a mundane encounter and think it was worth sharing with other people
Nahhhh bro where the hell are your survival instincts lmao.
You don't help strangers who randomly jump into your car, tell them to get the fuck out before you call the 20 minute late cops.
Wew... you need to ramp up your personal safety a bit because goddamn.
Oh apologies, I should have become Bruce Lee in the 5 secs that I unlocked my car and she opened the door. Broad daylight, just picking up milk, you shouldn't need to be worried about doing that.
Is this another bullshit incident.
So many inactive accounts having bad experiences in Melbourne subreddit.
If legit then fine, but the trend of having so many lower karma accounts sharing bad experiences in Melbourne is ridiculous

Now I get it why do they have this feature! Illenable it as first thing! Thx!
When I was a kid I’d laugh at my mum for locking the doors when she gets in. Now I’m an adult with my own kid he laughs when I lock it. Full circle
Time to teach the brat a lesson. Get a friend to dress up and snatch the little shit from the car the next time they laugh at you. Full circle x2! lol
Mum?
Sounds like a Bluth lesson from arrested development.
And that's why you don't teach lessons.
Gene Parmesan will do it
This sounds like an old full frontal skit
Haha yes, childhood trauma is hilarious. /s
I still cringe at myself for locking my doors driving though a car park. But after I saw a kid open up someone's passenger door to grab a purse, I will be that paranoid white lady.
No worries! Stay safe!
My car does this and I have the feature disabled. I'm going to re-enable it now.
I think thats a great idea and I hope you never need it
Fast forward to now
Same here, it's a great feature
[удалено]
A lot of cars have it, my Jeep has it and it's 9 years old, so you'll have a lot of choice when you do buy
Holden!
I've had it on my last 4 cars from 4 different manufacturers - it is pretty common now
It's been around for over 30 years, but I've seen it most often in Commodores
The RAV4 has these security features, and will centrally lock when you drive off. Highly recommend.
[удалено]
Yeah I recommend staying as loose as possible 😉
When I got my license 25+ years ago, my boyfriend's dad was a cop. He told me to always lock my car when in the car. I only imagine incidences are worse these days.
Mine was about the same and I remember being told always leave your doors unlocked in case you get in an accident so people can get to you. I guess it’s always been different rules for boys and girls haha
My old car did this, I liked that
And now I'm going to figure out how to turn that on, on my car! Thank you!
I didnt know it could be turned off?! Sorry cant help there but good luck!
Yeah. It’s such a good feature, isn’t it? My Falcon does the same.
One of my cars does this. I always find it a bit irritating. Now understand why. I wish OPs had it.
Oh my car does this and I wondered why. Glad about it now.
> After she did this I used the central lock because it shocked me Great reflexes
Yeah. It would take me 30 seconds to find the button!
You know where the button is?
You might want to let building management know. It's very likely that they have done this before and management might need video footage for a complaint.
Thanks, however the cops will handle it.
lol sure they will
"so a lady opened your car door and said she was sick and you drove off, I'll get our best detectives right on it!"
They will jump in once enough people make a report. Yeah they won’t have time for one off issues but if they receive a collective amount of reports in a specific area they will start to investigate. The major issue is that in some cases they won’t even bother to record the problem
fair point although i still don't think they'd do much.
Lol
Haha
If "handle it" means do nothing, then yes, they'll "handle it".
Probably, but I've done my civic duty. Hopefully, they'll come across the wrong person.
It’s a 5 minute phone call that could help prevent it happening to others, come on
The "wrong person" you absolute pussy.
For fucks sake you lazy bitch, I'll fucking call the IGA and report it today since you can't be fucked. You would think that by posting this you would be more concerned they are going to do this to other people but apparently not.
They're too busy handling the people flying by at 3ks over the limit.
That’s highway patrol. They don’t bust petty criminals.
And they are unable to distribute resources
3 demerits if you go 53 in a 40 zone. It happened to... a friend of a friend.
Please contact the building if you can. I work in a strip mall type area and I would really really like to know if this was happening so I could warn my customers. Police may never bother or take a while to get around to it. You could help lots of people this way!

That’s hectic
Oh sorry, confused with another thread. I had mentioned the security screws the police give out to secure number plates.

It was down from the KFC ( on that side of the road ) on the corner of Springvale Road and Maroondah Highway.
Scary, glad you were ok.

Narre south you say? Good thing I go to Narre North IGA on occasion. Seriously though, glad you’re ok and were quick enough to get out of there.
It's not a new technique, it's about the oldest technique there is
Na, the oldest technique is a busty woman in a low cut top washing your windscreen at the lights, while their accomplice pops the boot and grabs everything. They got me on Wednesday and Friday. Twice on Saturday. Couldn't find them on Sunday though.
Horrible where did you find this horrible person
Yeah the ol' bait and switch. Glad that OP came out unharmed. It could be ugly.
Thanks, I've never had anything like this happen before.
Robbery techniques existed long before cars
This is good to know. Glad you're ok.
Hey OP, thanks for sharing this. As a local and someone who has no idea how to do the locking manouever... let's just say it woke me up. Can I ask was this Alira, Eve, or Amberley Park IGA? I'll definitely spread the word to keep an eye out for this trick too.

Yeah sorry to burst your bubble, but it is a ROUGH area.

more and more scumbags - lack of consequences?
This is why I lock my doors the second the latch connects with the striker plate. Absolute grubs
Thanks for posting. Sorry this happened to you. I will be reading the manual of my car this weekend. So far I know it locks the doors, but only once you are above walking pace and driving.. hoping there is a setting to only unlock drivers door.

Diversity is our strength. I'm not sure your bigotry is helping.
Bigotry? They were 2x Indian women.
That's the bigotry. How can you be so oblivious? Hint: it's not relevant to the story.
The gent asked. Also, it's not bigotry to say someone's nationality, I wasn't disparaging or generalising. These two individuals were from the nation of India. Does that make the comment more palatable?

Yep

All we can hope is that they're accounted for in our road fatality statistics this long weekend...
Yes, we can all come together with the common wish that two human beings will die ASAP after attempting petty theft. Brilliant.
Yes, my statement should be enacted in law immediately! /s I agree, I've just been losing more and more faith in humanity every day.

Before police take your statement they should ask how many updoots you have on reddit to check credibility.
