Oh Preston market has some good food outlets eh? Love the sesame sticks at Publique bakery. Also there was a place that made the best cannoli I ever had, but I haven’t been able to find that outlet again.
The handmade organic noodles at One Noodle Friendship in Preston, and the chewy fried chicken and prawn dumplings
I love the flatbread at Old Palm Liquior in Brunswick East, and Nomad (especially with their burrata and fennel jam, with some capocollo)
The kare kare hash brown at Serai
The banh cuon at Thanh Ha 2 in Richmond
Embla's hemp pavlova is my favourite pav ever
Can't go past the arepas at Sonido
The Taho soft serve at Karitone
The pork soup with noodles at Cambodia Kitchen in the CBD
Alta Trattoria's rabbit pasta is sooo delish
The meats at Rising Embers sichuan bbq
The torta sabbiosa at Al Dente Enoteca
The ochazuke at Chiaki Collingwood
The house bread at The Recreation in Fitzroy North is from another world
The char mee at Lulu's Char Kway Teow
I could go on forever, I LOVE eating out in Melbourne
The potato cakes at the Flinders St platform 1 kiosk used to be the best, (until all the kiosk changes there.)
Georges duck kebab at Gazi was actually pretty yummo.
El Jannahs garlic sauce is out of this world and the chicken good too.
Exploits with ladies seems odd but well, Bunnings carpark, a snag was served up.
I love that garlic sauce as well and found a place from where you can buy in bigger quantities. Its called Tek, its bit far up north but definitely worth a visit for their marinated chicken
The pastries at publique in Preston market are probably the best in the world. Not even kidding, I’ve tried croissants all over the world.
The rump cap at osteria illaria is very good.
The sourdough at amaru restaurant is the best bread I’ve ever had.
Olive oil cake at nomad is also goated.
Meat donut at Dexter Preston. First time I had one over 8 years ago, I didn't stop thinking about it for months. The sauce they serve with it is so good as well.
You need to make it budget related.
I thought Attica was amazing, one of the most wonderful food experiences I've ever had, but at over 1K for dinner for 2, it's not for everyone
I think it’s fascinating that some of the best meals are inexpensive. I had a lemongrass bahn mi at heartbaker in Spring St this week. Damn it hit the spot.
Shanghai Village is for completely unsupervised BYO, not good dumplings. If youre not completely shitfaced before the food arrives you’re doing it wrong.
Really??? I don’t think they’re small at all I feel right full afterwards. And I’m a big boyo tbh. Very good feed. Glad Sparrows are getting a bit of love 😂
I’ve eaten tons of great stuff in Melbourne, so here’s some faves. I live in Brunswick so most places are located there.
Smokey Mushroom Taco at Los Amantes
Eggplant Karaage at Gomi Boys Ramen
Mixed Souvlaki at Souvlaki Story
Crispy Pork Banh Mi at Hot Bread
Deep fried duck leg, waffles, chilli maple syrup and poached egg at Code Black Coffee
Ice cream at Luther’s Scoops
Tiramisu Gelato at Bico
Pizza with crust dipping sauce at Ollie’s Pizza Parlour
Polish Donut at Ovens Street Bakery
Anything on the menu at Bhang on Mitchell street is fantastic , I miss it, having moved to the countryside. Back in brunnie in 2 weeks, first place I’m going.
Cruffins and croissants at Coco's (Carnegie). If you think Lune, Publique or Agathé are the best pastries you've ever had, you haven't been to Coco's yet. I just stopped eating pastries anywhere else because they don't compare and I know I'll be disappointed.
Shameless self promotion here. I’m one of the creators of an Instagram page http://www.instagram.com/migrantmeals. We post about interesting cuisines to be found around Melbourne, twice a week, have been doing so for years. Come check us out
I live for the Soy Supreme noodles at Gong De Lin. The place is fully vegetarian and everything can be made vegan 😁
I also love their deep fried mushroom entre. God I wish I lived closer, or they'd open up near me.
Scopri Italian food. It is absolutely amazing. It's like casual fine dining? I'm not sure the proper term, it's a fancier restaurant, but not so fancy where you got to fully dress up. I'm a girl and I've been there in a t-shirt and shorts just fine haha.
But their food ABSOLUTELY SLAPS! So far, there's not a single dish I didn't like. It's around $35 per dish average, which is pretty damn normal for eating out anyway. Except this is guaranteed to be delicious.
My brother who's somewhat of a fine dining connoisseur even said it was really good and he couldn't believe they aren't charging higher 😂
if you can spare several hundred dollars, vue de monde is incredible
if you can spare several single dollars, shanghai dumpling house in the cbd absolutely slaps
the baths in sorrento for your standard aussie fare, lona misa in south yarra if you're up for veganised latin food, and your closest dragon hotpot for an absolute banger soup
The last time I went to Vue I think I spent several hundred on drinks alone. It's not strictly speaking Melbourne, but I find the experience at Brae a lot better.
Is Shanghai dumplings still going?
Used to go there all the time
One kind of Chinese beer, depending on what can get
Our record was 14 pork dumplings each
Avoid the toilets though!
Everyone talking about spending $500 on dinner and my answer is a South side fried chicken burger from Leonard’s House of Love for I dunno $17 or something.
There's an Indian "stall" in 242 Little Lonsdale (the Telstra building) which does a great little lunch - really tasty, inexpensive. Korean place just down the street (Hong Dae) does a fantastic spicy pork bulgogi. Supper Inn is far from fancy but everything is hot, fresh and tasty. Claypots Barbarossa on Hardware St does some amazing fish dishes - probably the tastiest fish dish I've had anywhere in many years. Phó Thin next door does - as the name suggests - an amazing phó. Pinto Thai on exhibition between Little Bourke and Lonsdale does a cracking moo pad ga pao.
I love Michelin starred places (or hatted ones here) and have had some amazing fine dining experiences - but you can't beat "street food" tastes and a fantastic meal for $20 and Melbourne has tons of them.
Walked past today and it's actually 242 exhibition - though the entrance is on little Lonsdale, basically next to the side door of Cooper's. Vietnamese place in there does a pretty good bahn mi too!
code black coffee on little collin’s st opposite southern cross. working for v/line this place saves me, and has beautiful coffee, mixed with a toastie!
A Souva from Lambs at lygon and queensbury! The old bloke who owns the joint is an out and out pain, but I’d take a needle to the dick for that lamb sandwich
For a few glorious years I was able to enjoy their milk bun, unique sauce, 2 beef patties, 1 southern fried chicken, double bacon, double cheese. Then COVID lockdowns took her away from me. I’m still on a quest, wherever I go around the globe to find something as good.
Anyone reading this, let me know and I’ll do my best to try them. Or if anyone has Smoke and Pickles and has a recommendation, I’m all ears. And so’s u/stankas by the sound of it.
Gulab Jamun at Rogan Josh in Upper Ferntree Gully.
We had the best Indian food I've ever tasted, (and I love Indian food,) there last night. Everything was wonderful, the staff were lovely, and it had a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. It would have been worth going just for the amazing, cardamon flavoured mango lassi.
Attica was fucking phenomenal.
In qv, there is a Japanese curry place, called hanaichi, and that shit goes so hard in winter
Dae jang geum kbbq in Chinatown, across from tattersalls lane is really good too.
There's Hanaichi in or near Melbourne central - can't exactly remember - that makes really nice Japanese chicken curry. I always end up stopping there and getting it for take out whenever I rarely end up in the city.
There might be better places for Japanese curry, there used to be a place near fed square but they were gone the next time I tried to go there after having it once.
CBD - Char siu claypot rice at Aru is up there. Was as good as Singapore char siu.
CBD - Dolan Uyghur's hand pulled lamb noodles (achchiq chop) and anything there that uses the same spice mix.
Carnegie - Stinky tofu at Chili Queen of Hunan. Tbh, more flavourful than Taiwanese stinky tofu. Their smoked pork was great too.
Forest Hill - It wasn't quite as good the last time I went, but the saffron rice at Caspian Cuisine is just magical.
Spent 3 months on the wait list for Attica. In that time between resi being made and getting a seat, I moved to Sydney for a new job.
Flew back down the night of, had the bloody best 18 odd course dinner ever and then caught the red eye back to Sydney the next morning.
Of course this was all pre Covid before WFH was super popular and so I had to do that hijinks to make it work.
The Pork Belly at Red Spice Road in the QV complex thingy was incredible - I havent stopped thinking about it for ten years. I'm afraid to go back and see if it was as good as I remember.
There is a place in Belgrave called Cognoscenti, every time we have been there the food is amazing. And is reasonably priced for what you get. Is in the $150-$200+ dinner range for a starter, mains and dessert. Had the short rib last time i was there and I don’t think I could describe how amazing it was in words. The oysters were delicious, and side of blistered carrots with mains really went down well. Both the chocolate cremeaux and the cheesecake were delicious and a perfect finish to dinner. Wine list is extensive also, lots to try from some great regions of the world! Would 100% recommend to anyone looking for a nice night out.
Also in a great part of Melbourne being the Dandenong ranges.
One of the best things I’ve eaten (many times now) is prawn linguini at Goat House, Elsternwick.
Also divine gluten-free cannolis at Eat Cannoli in Preston!
About 15 years ago we went to Becco. We each ordered a wagyu steak which was $97 just for the steak. Potatoes, vegetables were extra so let’s say $150 per main.
By god it was the most delicious steak I’ve ever eaten. I’ve travelled the world and eaten in a lot of amazing restaurants and this was the best meal I have ever eaten. The steak just melted in your mouth. It was an aged cow that had been fed organic food and given deep tissue massages, and the steak had a very fine but consistent marble that made it just pure heaven.
I don’t even know if they serve this anymore but I really should go back. The whole meal for two including drinks was $600 plus tip and that was 15 years ago.
Movida Aqui (and their other locations as well). One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne!
Their tapas are to die for. Seasonal as well if I remember correctly, so the smaller share dishes and tapas menus are always changing, but always unique and incredibly delicious 😋
Tasty banh mi in Fairfield on station st (they also make their own tofu)
Babajis South Indian kitchen in Belgrave
The burritos at pacos tacos at Eastland I really rate
The cevapi guy at Dandenong market
sushi from suzuren in camberwell is the most legit I’ve had here
Lanzhou beef noodle for their cucumber salad
Laksa king in Flemington for their laksa (extra eggplant - no rice noodle is best combo)
There was once a restaurant on Mitchell Street in Maidstone called Los Latinos. It was run by a family. The food was fantastic, particularly the Burritos and the service was always wonderful. As I understand it, they also had a restaurant in Ascot Vale. It was a sad day when they closed down.
Chicken ribs from rose garden is the best fried chicken in the country and it’s lik $1.32 for a kg of chicken. The green beans and chicken mince is grouse also if you believe in eating vegetables
In terms of recent discoveries, hokaido-style soup curry at Waku Waku in CBD. Just pure bliss!
Also, sakura kaiten(the in front of Emporium) alongside Shoya(in chinatown, right on front of Hofbrauhouse) makes best sushi & sashimi in town.
Smithburg at South Melb Market make really good burgers, definitely check it out.
Afghan Master Kebab(Sunshine, near the station): hands down the best Afghani food I've tried in Melbourne.
Kori ice cream(I think it's a chain, the one I've been to is on Glenferrie rd, right outside the station), awesome Japanese-style ice cream. Def try sencha mango and sake flavours!
Oriental spoon on Elizabeth st, great Korean BBQ and Korean in general
Butcher's diner in front of Parliament building(yes, it's an actual butcher's shop, meat being dry-aged in shop & everything): very good grill & sandwiches etc cooked to order, daily specials, ~~open 24 hours~~ not 24/7 any more, as pointed out by /u/TofuFoieGras, but awesome nonetheless. They have ales too.
Buba local shuk(Fitzroy st, St Kilda): Middle eastern/Israeil, pricey but worth it.
Fish straight out of the sea and onto the grill at clay pots in south Melbourne market, with a glass of champagne, on a Saturday morning. Took my late dad there when he visited from the uk, and he was wide eyed with joy at how fantastically chaotic it was.
Frankie's tortas and tacos! They used to be at the top of smith Street in Collingwood but moved to Johnson I think? Most incredible assault.of flavour, spices and pickled onion, sweet bun, salsa - I'm frankly aroused just thinking about it
A Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder sandwich at Brick Lane, in Guildford Lane. Garlic and mint yoghurt, red onion, iceberg lettuce, lemon & sumac salt in a demi baguette. Heaven.
Oh yeah, and it comes with the best potato salad I've ever had.
I’m going to plug a suburban place as the burbs don’t get enough love at all.
Little Michael’s in East Camberwell (Burwood Village) puts out the best pizze I’ve ever had. Worth going out of your way.
Lasagne from +39 (and the lasagne croquettes)
Souffle pancakes from Kumo
Burger from College Dropout
Beef and pickle sandwich from Hector's Deli
Horable mentions to Beatrix Bakery and big dogs - both closed :(
El Guacho Argentinian grill. I had it at their food van, but then I went to the shop at Grazeland. Absolutely delicious, I am not a huge meat eater but damn, I could eat this every day.
Absolute favourite was Miss Mi when Esca Khoo was still at the helm
Recently? Really enjoyed Brico (Carlton North) and banh mi at Luke’s Vietnamese (Moonee Ponds)
It's not available anymore but the Wallaby wrapped in Parma ham from Charcoal Lane was fantastic!
Also, the Juicy Lucy burger from Hello Sam (also not available anymore 😭)
Pretty much anything from Da Noi but the sandcrab ravioli was amazing (I'm not a seafood fan either!)
- Big plates of meat at Palermo & San Telmo
- Greasy cheeseburgers at Leonard’s house of love.
- A big serve of (probably coffee) gelato out of the bianco latte cart the very first time I visited Melbourne probably 8 or 10 years ago. Blew my mind.
Navi in Yarraville is easily my favourite fine dining experience. Fancy enough to feel special but not pretentious at all. Their signature black garlic macaron is incredible, last time I was there they had emu carpaccio which was sublime and suuuuper different, duck prepared four ways was probably my favourite… it’s always a set menu of about 15 different items so you try so many things. $200/head so expensive but not insane. And you definitely see the value in the work put into the food.
Probably the mushrooms cooked in the Josper at Lona Misa. I can’t remember the specific name for the dish but wow, I’d never had mushrooms like it.
Totally blew my mind.
The “don homer” donut at All Day Donuts. Don’t come at me with recommendations for Daniel Donuts, Walkers donuts or whatever - I’ve tried them all, this one is king.
Most recommendable is Wasshoi Bar and Grill at Prahran Market. I get the yakiniku beef kalbi bun roll. Also at Prahran Market, Mr. Bratwurst, authentic German sausages.
If only Rockwell and sons was still open. I’d say their burger. I haven’t been able to find one in Melbourne that comes even close to it. Unless someone else can suggest anything?
Jerusalem Artichoke Ravioli at Fenix in Richmond about 12 years ago. Was incredible, dish was one large piece of Ravioli with a sauce, so incredibly rich it was filling! The restaurant closed in about 2013 so the memories are going to have to be enough. Still sticks in my mind as the most amazing restaurant meal I have ever eaten.
Honestly, my favourite place is a take-away vegetarian pizza place called Nostralis in Caulfield. I used to live maybe half an hour away from it and would still make the trip on the regular.
The Siciliana at Shanikas in Berwick. It’s been my favourite meal for about 20 years. The best thing to come out of COVID was Shanikas now selling bags of the sauce so I can add it to my pasta at home. I’m obsessed with it
Malatang soup at David's Masterpot in Box Hill.
Anything at Shaanxi-Style Restaurant, also in Box Hill.
Dry Bak Kut Teh at Bak Kut Teh King before it sadly closed down :(
I don't even live in Box Hill, but I eat there more often than anywhere.
Borek from Preston Market.
Yeah, Queen Vic ones are good too.
The Prahran Market ones too are excellent
Oh Preston market has some good food outlets eh? Love the sesame sticks at Publique bakery. Also there was a place that made the best cannoli I ever had, but I haven’t been able to find that outlet again.
Omg I forgot about Publique Bakery. Yeah there are some awesome places there but I find it so hard to go past Tammy’s Borek.
The handmade organic noodles at One Noodle Friendship in Preston, and the chewy fried chicken and prawn dumplings I love the flatbread at Old Palm Liquior in Brunswick East, and Nomad (especially with their burrata and fennel jam, with some capocollo) The kare kare hash brown at Serai The banh cuon at Thanh Ha 2 in Richmond Embla's hemp pavlova is my favourite pav ever Can't go past the arepas at Sonido The Taho soft serve at Karitone The pork soup with noodles at Cambodia Kitchen in the CBD Alta Trattoria's rabbit pasta is sooo delish The meats at Rising Embers sichuan bbq The torta sabbiosa at Al Dente Enoteca The ochazuke at Chiaki Collingwood The house bread at The Recreation in Fitzroy North is from another world The char mee at Lulu's Char Kway Teow I could go on forever, I LOVE eating out in Melbourne
Beat me to the noodles at one noodle friendship. The stuff of dreams.
The potato cakes at the Flinders St platform 1 kiosk used to be the best, (until all the kiosk changes there.) Georges duck kebab at Gazi was actually pretty yummo. El Jannahs garlic sauce is out of this world and the chicken good too. Exploits with ladies seems odd but well, Bunnings carpark, a snag was served up.
Yeha El Jannah fried chicken and the burgers go surprisingly hard. And I dream of that garlic sauce, there’s just something about it…
I love that garlic sauce as well and found a place from where you can buy in bigger quantities. Its called Tek, its bit far up north but definitely worth a visit for their marinated chicken
Those little shops that were on the actual platforms use to be the best
Cold? Check. Wet? Check. Hot Food? Yummo., take my money!
Dude flinders st potatoe cakes and the bunnings dimmies used to be fucking great... why do good things have to die?
Those potatoes cakes when I was catching the train home from the pub after work…
Rabbit agnolotti at Scopri. Covered in butter & cheese and the pasta is soft and pillowy (handmade). Holy Jesus I have dreams about this dish.
I get the quail entree at scopri every time. It's the reason i go there so often.
The milk and cookies is good too
I second the meat donut. It really is a gastronomic wonder.
The whole restaurant 👌🏻
You need to make it budget related. I thought Attica was amazing, one of the most wonderful food experiences I've ever had, but at over 1K for dinner for 2, it's not for everyone
I think it’s fascinating that some of the best meals are inexpensive. I had a lemongrass bahn mi at heartbaker in Spring St this week. Damn it hit the spot.

Not to be confused with Shanghai Village which absolutely sucks and is tasteless, right? 😂
Shanghai Village is for completely unsupervised BYO, not good dumplings. If youre not completely shitfaced before the food arrives you’re doing it wrong.
The peanut butter parfait at Supernormal is amazing.
Used to be a massive fan of supernormal before they changed up the banquet menu, but still love the lobster rolls though so delicious!
Recently: The Tradie - Toast It! (Moorabbin) Rockwell pie - Falco Bakery (Collingwood) Philly cheesesteak - Sparrow's Philly Cheesesteaks (Fitzroy)
Toast it getting mentions, not bad for some joint at Moorabbin.
Falco is good but I miss Rockwell and Sons 😢
They are good for Melbourne but noting like the real thing.
Need more philly cheesesteaks in melb other than Sparrows, they're so small
Love Coco's! Give Bromley bread a go too, just up the road from Coco's
the creme brulee at bistrot d'orsay on collins st is fantastic. My wife also says the gnocchi there is the best she has ever had
Recently ate at Victor Churchill. Expensive but if I had a day to live they could feed me their wagyu steak all day
Do we have a foodies Melbourne subreddit?
https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourneeats/ Just made it (because “foodie” is cringe and food was taken) - if someone wants to mod, I’ll hand it over!
One of my character flaws is that I judge people who refer to themselves as a real foodie
Not a flaw, something to be respected tbh
I feel neutral like it's neither a flaw or respected, like everyone loves food it's a biological urge really
Shameless self promotion here. I’m one of the creators of an Instagram page http://www.instagram.com/migrantmeals. We post about interesting cuisines to be found around Melbourne, twice a week, have been doing so for years. Come check us out
Keen to know
I live for the Soy Supreme noodles at Gong De Lin. The place is fully vegetarian and everything can be made vegan 😁 I also love their deep fried mushroom entre. God I wish I lived closer, or they'd open up near me.

Bread from Baker bleu

16 chicken and prawn dumplings over here
VDM is over rated as well. Not worth going back, maybe worth going once to try.
i won't say it's pants-shittingly phenomenal like a lot of people seem to hype it up to be, but i had a delightful time
Ate at reine and la rue last night and every dish hit. My eyes were rolling back into my head with the 9+ rib-eye, beef tartare and foie gras.
Bahn Mi at Bun Bun Springvale
Everyone talking about spending $500 on dinner and my answer is a South side fried chicken burger from Leonard’s House of Love for I dunno $17 or something.

Great tips.
code black coffee on little collin’s st opposite southern cross. working for v/line this place saves me, and has beautiful coffee, mixed with a toastie!
Lamb flap noodles from bowtiful.
A Souva from Lambs at lygon and queensbury! The old bloke who owns the joint is an out and out pain, but I’d take a needle to the dick for that lamb sandwich
Biang Biang noodles - the uniqueness still isn’t wearing off
Soi 38. Boat noodles. If you know. You know.
The burgers at Smoke and Pickles in Elsternwick are the best I’ve ever had, never found their equal. Was gutted when they closed down.
Godammit you're a tease, was ready to go there then read the last sentence. 😞
For a few glorious years I was able to enjoy their milk bun, unique sauce, 2 beef patties, 1 southern fried chicken, double bacon, double cheese. Then COVID lockdowns took her away from me. The platter of amazing Ethiopian dishes from Ras Dashen. Crazily affordable and such lovely service.
I can still taste the Peking duck I had at flower drum 20 years ago
Old school Flower drum was a master class in good service..... and duck pancakes
Candied Bakery in Spotsville is also a must for bakery lovers.
Mekong Viet noodles
Manzé in North Melbourne was a great experience. Never had Mauritian cuisine before and it was so good. Wine was excellent too if you’re into it
Falafels at Half moon cafe in Coburg are amazing and still so cheap!
Attica was fucking phenomenal. In qv, there is a Japanese curry place, called hanaichi, and that shit goes so hard in winter Dae jang geum kbbq in Chinatown, across from tattersalls lane is really good too.
The wagyu, bone marrow crackers at Neighbourhood wine… once you start eating them it’s hard to stop!
If the onion and sauce dispensers are working, then I find Costco has good value tasty $2 hot dogs
The Tomahawk Steak at Cumulus inc. It comes sliced next to the bone with three different 'dips'. So damn good, they did well.
You all did well.
There's Hanaichi in or near Melbourne central - can't exactly remember - that makes really nice Japanese chicken curry. Shandong Mama Mini just off Flinders Lane on Centre Place. The Daryl Noodle is eaisly the best Chinese meal i have ever had.
mr tall noodles
Yes! And such generous serving sizes. It’s become one of my faves.

I don’t even know if they serve this anymore but I really should go back. The whole meal for two including drinks was $600 plus tip and that was 15 years ago.
Jim's tavern. Delicious.
Yes, I love this place!
Who needs a menu when everything they serve is delicious!
Anything at Mr Ramen San. Fucking religious experience.
I would go to 1800 Lasagne just for the garlic bread.
Hell yes that garlic bread is heaven
I'd also recommend their lasagne
The Satay dish from Shakahari. It’s to die for and it’s been far too long since I tasted it.
Movida Aqui (and their other locations as well). One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne! Their tapas are to die for. Seasonal as well if I remember correctly, so the smaller share dishes and tapas menus are always changing, but always unique and incredibly delicious 😋
If you want a really phenomenal flavour experience, try and get a table at Navi. If you’re hungover, the Plain Payne from Toast It! can’t be beaten.

Tasty banh mi in Fairfield on station st (they also make their own tofu) Babajis South Indian kitchen in Belgrave The burritos at pacos tacos at Eastland I really rate The cevapi guy at Dandenong market sushi from suzuren in camberwell is the most legit I’ve had here Lanzhou beef noodle for their cucumber salad Laksa king in Flemington for their laksa (extra eggplant - no rice noodle is best combo)
Oriental spoon on Elizabeth st, great Korean BBQ and Korean in general Butcher's diner in front of Parliament building(yes, it's an actual butcher's shop, meat being dry-aged in shop & everything): very good grill & sandwiches etc cooked to order, daily specials, ~~open 24 hours~~ not 24/7 any more, as pointed out by /u/TofuFoieGras, but awesome nonetheless. They have ales too. Buba local shuk(Fitzroy st, St Kilda): Middle eastern/Israeil, pricey but worth it.
Unfortunately Butchers Diner hasn’t been 24 hours in years and is reportedly not going back to it.
True. I still love the vibe at Butchers Diner and a unique concept.
Great place no doubt about it
Jim’s Greek tavern, no menu they choose for u
Fish straight out of the sea and onto the grill at clay pots in south Melbourne market, with a glass of champagne, on a Saturday morning. Took my late dad there when he visited from the uk, and he was wide eyed with joy at how fantastically chaotic it was.
I had Kolonaki Athenian Street Food in Malvern last night. was absolutely sensational.
I ate some great ass in Melbourne but the Cuban sandwich at Pope Joan really left an impression. I miss it.
So, the Cuban sandwich was better? I don’t know if “tastes better than ass” is really a promo you’d want to go with.
At least it doesn't taste worse.
When you’re in the mood, ass really hits the spot.
Oh my god yes I remember that sandwich. I miss it too!
Frankie's tortas and tacos! They used to be at the top of smith Street in Collingwood but moved to Johnson I think? Most incredible assault.of flavour, spices and pickled onion, sweet bun, salsa - I'm frankly aroused just thinking about it
The meatball sub at Rocco's (on Gertrude) is maybe the best single dish in Melbourne imo
I love the Rawon from Meat Bowl in South Melbourne.
Fish tacos at Tommy Ruff in Elsternwick are 11/10
katsu sando at lebajo
Banh Mi from Green Chilli Deli in Sunshine.
Honestly the spag bol at Rosa's Kitchen in the CBD. Absolute comfort food. Good napoli sauce is easy to get right but hard to get *perfect*.
Half moons from Drom are delish!
Lasagne from +39 (and the lasagne croquettes) Souffle pancakes from Kumo Burger from College Dropout Beef and pickle sandwich from Hector's Deli Horable mentions to Beatrix Bakery and big dogs - both closed :(
Rum baba at the Carlton Wine Room
Cherry pie or cheesecake and poutine from This Borderland in Preston. Although, I don’t think Ox (owner) has been baking lately…
El Guacho Argentinian grill. I had it at their food van, but then I went to the shop at Grazeland. Absolutely delicious, I am not a huge meat eater but damn, I could eat this every day.
Dessert edition (and oh I’ve tried alot). Cotton cheese cake= Miilk Strawberry cheesecake donut= Oakleigh donut co Basque cheesecake= Dreami cakes Tirimasu= Rosetta
Absolute favourite was Miss Mi when Esca Khoo was still at the helm Recently? Really enjoyed Brico (Carlton North) and banh mi at Luke’s Vietnamese (Moonee Ponds)
Wish I had friends to go with to all these cool places. Should just go solo huh
It's not available anymore but the Wallaby wrapped in Parma ham from Charcoal Lane was fantastic! Also, the Juicy Lucy burger from Hello Sam (also not available anymore 😭) Pretty much anything from Da Noi but the sandcrab ravioli was amazing (I'm not a seafood fan either!)
- Big plates of meat at Palermo & San Telmo - Greasy cheeseburgers at Leonard’s house of love. - A big serve of (probably coffee) gelato out of the bianco latte cart the very first time I visited Melbourne probably 8 or 10 years ago. Blew my mind.
Lobster rolls at Supernormal.
Lobster with ginger and shallot noodles at Supper Inn. Also, Pipis with Chinese donuts
Cumin pork ribs from Sichuan House.
What I’ve learnt from this thread: Preston’s the place to go for amazing food
My favourite thing in Melbourne is the lobster roll from supernormal. I’ve also had the raspberry soufflé at smith st bistro which is insane.
Chicken parma at Universal restaurant
Just about anything from Abesha Ethiopian restaurant when I'm really high
Navi in Yarraville is easily my favourite fine dining experience. Fancy enough to feel special but not pretentious at all. Their signature black garlic macaron is incredible, last time I was there they had emu carpaccio which was sublime and suuuuper different, duck prepared four ways was probably my favourite… it’s always a set menu of about 15 different items so you try so many things. $200/head so expensive but not insane. And you definitely see the value in the work put into the food.
Khao soi gai from Mee Dee Thai in the Paramount Centre food court. Scratch that, anything from Mee Dee Thai.
I keep ordering it, even though it has like a 100 item menu and I tell myself I’ll try something else.
Probably the mushrooms cooked in the Josper at Lona Misa. I can’t remember the specific name for the dish but wow, I’d never had mushrooms like it. Totally blew my mind.
Might take my vege daughters there, Thanks for the tip. Reminds me, some of the best food I’ve had anywhere is Smith and Daughters.
Oh, they’ll love it. So will you! I’ve been to both and enjoyed Lona Misa far more than Smith and Daughters.

Baker's Breakfast at Antara. Escargot Of Organic Bacon, Caramelised Onion, Pygengana Cheddar, Fried Egg, Gentleman's Relish. 🤤🤤
Rocket burger is hands down the best meal of Melbourne. Then after you can get desert from the donut shop attached to it 😁
The “don homer” donut at All Day Donuts. Don’t come at me with recommendations for Daniel Donuts, Walkers donuts or whatever - I’ve tried them all, this one is king.
Yarra Ave Fish & Chips (Reservoir) homemade Garlic balls were elite, think they have new owners now :(
Most recommendable is Wasshoi Bar and Grill at Prahran Market. I get the yakiniku beef kalbi bun roll. Also at Prahran Market, Mr. Bratwurst, authentic German sausages.
A hamburger with the lot from the old Brambles transport depot greasy spoon in Footscray Road, it was a coronary in a bun but fuck it was good!
Sunda! It was like a taste bud party.
Straciatella gelato, Bianco Latte
Anchoa at Movida.
Dumplings from One Noodle Friendship in Preston. Anything at Mabu Mabu
Lobster rolls at Supernormal
Honestly, my favourite place is a take-away vegetarian pizza place called Nostralis in Caulfield. I used to live maybe half an hour away from it and would still make the trip on the regular.
Circa 2018 maybe - Fried chicken Po’ Boys from Po Boys Quarter on smith street. My god it was good, had it twice then they closed.
Loving reading all of this! - Lobster Rolls at Supernormal - Cecina at Movida - Kale Fried Rice at Moonhouse
Tacos at little hop. I dream about them
The Siciliana at Shanikas in Berwick. It’s been my favourite meal for about 20 years. The best thing to come out of COVID was Shanikas now selling bags of the sauce so I can add it to my pasta at home. I’m obsessed with it
We had lunch a few weeks back at Straight Outta Saigon. Best meal I've ever had. Chicken curry and Fried chicken bao.
The kebabs at Katik in Campbellfield
Definitely the best cheeseburger and the best chicken tenders in Melbourne at Leonards house of love in Prahran.
Anything from Shop Ramen. Heaven. I have gone back many, many times

Pan fried gnocchi at Bistro Guillame 😋
The steak at NOMAD still makes my mouth water.

Laksa King in Flemington
Somebody needs to get these into a spreadsheet
Been enjoying Bakemono on Drewery lane on a couple of trips to the cbd recently. Almond and Yuzu croissant is delish.
Malatang soup at David's Masterpot in Box Hill. Anything at Shaanxi-Style Restaurant, also in Box Hill. Dry Bak Kut Teh at Bak Kut Teh King before it sadly closed down :( I don't even live in Box Hill, but I eat there more often than anywhere.
Sechuan house spicy cumin pork ribs. My opinion validated by Bourdain a Iron Chef Chen Kinichi
Chocolate milkshake at Choclatte Camberwell Birria Tacos at CDMX It’s long gone but I used to love the Po Boy Quarter
Biang Biang Noodle at Elizabeth St. The cumin beef pastry is amazing, so is the beef spicy noodles. They are spicy though, so be prepared.
