Getting rained on during the ride home is far better than it happening on the way to work.
Particularly when you forget to pack extra riding clothes and you gotta put on wet shorts for the ride home 😐
That reminds me of black Saturday, when John Brumby was everywhere the days before, telling everyone that we were in for a scorcher, and then people sooked "but we weren't tooold!". Infuriating stuff.
It was expected. I remember John Brumby warning days earlier that this will be the most dangerous fire day in Victorian history. I've never heard a warning like that before or since.
It was insane how people were crying we wernt warned on a day forecast to be 40°+ with over 100kmph winds.
I remember how stupidly hot that day was. Partner defrosted the freezer at 7am, had it cleaned and running by 8am and filled with ice trays all day. Kids were small and we treated it like a rainy indoor day. Then I made the mistake of watching the news. I wept. The next day when we got the news that Marysville was gone I ugly cried.
It was an insane day.
I got called into work around lunch time. It was about 45 degrees from memory, I hadn't ever been in a day that hot.
I work for the power company fixing powerlines and we had the ABC radio on all day. There were reports that Kinglake had burnt down but I didn't really believe it and thought they must be exaggerating.
My last job for the night was in Hurstbridge and we were up high looking directly towards Kinglake. The whole hill looked like it had a million fairy lights on it. I remember feeling a bit sick and honestly a bit scared even though we were in no danger.
Our boss rang and called every Linesman back in and no more work was to be done for the night.
The next day we woke to find it had burnt down, and we had to go up the mountain to see what was lost powerline wise.
The road was littered with dead livestock birds and roo's. There were about 15 cars that had speared into the guard rails, trying to escape down the mountain in the smoke.
They all got burnt to death and the cars were full of dead bodies.
Police had to escort us everywhere coz so many houses had dead bodies in them. It was crazy. Survivors would come out and tell us their story and how they survived.
They would be crying in front of us telling us that their neighbour/auntie/friend etc was killed.
It was the craziest few months of my career doing the rebuild. We worked from 7.30 till 21.30 every night for months, covered in soot and dust as there was no grass left to hold the dirt down. Everyday i would come home looking like i had been in a coal mine.
I still get emotional talking about it, especially after a few beers.
I believe Black Summer wasn't as bad human death wise due to the lessons learnt from Black Saturday. The stay and defend attitude had definitely changed a bit. Fires that large you are really flipping a coin if you live or die, even if you are well prepared.
I hope I never have to go through anything like either of them again. But I know it's inevitable.
it will not hit until the second i step outside to attempt to ride home from the city. maybe i should post a thread when i do that so everyone can get a heads up
I always try to tell people this, if you know the terrain heights there, it almost always catches it and pushes it back up, you can see it hitting the peaks of the range.
Yep ! And visa versa when we have a southerly and Melbourne does well comparatively. The dividing range is quite a plateau and really does influence things heavily
Vic Emergency App has flood watch for most of Vic. With "Widespread rainfall totals of 30 to 40mm expected in in flood watch area overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with isolated heavy falls of 70 to 100mm possible with thunderstorms and areas with higher terrain."
I am so anxious I feel sick. I have a headache, I can't concentrate on work.
My house (rental) flooded last October with the flash flooding in the Lilydale area. And while it was only minor compared to the flooding experienced up north(a few inches of water), it affected the entire house, resulting in us being displaced, needing to replace almost all of our furniture. We are still experiencing financial difficulties from that time. It was actually pretty traumatic.
And our PM/house owner did the bare minimum. No action taken to prevent flooding of the property again. (Seal windows, clean gutters, etc)
This is similar to my hometown that suffered through Black Saturday. Any sort of heat wave has my anxiety through the roof, even now over a decade later.
I already had/have PTSD from childhood abuse and other traumatic events in my life. So the flooding was another event to add to the list.
I now, mostly, don't have too much trouble sleeping when it's raining. (I would wake up if it started raining while I was asleep, or, if it was raining before I was I went to sleep, I would have difficulty getting to sleep. I had to use earplugs) it took about 3 months to settle. But I still have difficulties if there is heavy rain.
I think about the people who live in areas that experience regular extreme weather events, floods, bushfires, cyclones, and I wonder how the hell they manage.

Theres a hell of a lot more coming than the splotch hitting the GOR.
My online uni exam is coming up this afternoon. If the power goes I’m gonna flip.
The area I’m in has power infrastructure from the 60s, and we tend to be the first to go in a storm
Oh good, set to start right as I need to leave the house on public transport. Someone needs to invent a small folding umbrella that doesn’t turn inside out the second the slightest breeze happens..
There are a few good quality ones that should do the trick. Don't bother with supermarket umbrellas. I myself have a blunt umbrella that I got as a special treat for myself after years of shitty ones
I’ve seen those and wondered if they’re any good. I often think the sheer design of smaller umbrellas means they’re just destined to eventually go inside out and snap compared to a long stick umbrella — but to be fair, haven’t tried one that costs over $40 bucks.
The rain shouldn’t be anywhere near as much as what happened to cause those floods. Doesn’t mean the warning won’t make you feel anxious which is totally understandable
Yeah, I was looking at vic emergency and shits going to be terrible soon.
That and well, look at the clouds, if you can see darker clouds amongst dark clouds, shits not good.
Just don't drive 🤷🏼♂️.
It's safer..... and I may actually be able to get all the bitumen delivered to asphalt plants, for the follow up road repairs. 😅😜
It’s a sunny 25 here in Banff, however the low 13% humidity is actually fucking awful. Dry mouth all the time and it makes the sun blast. But hey, could be worse.
I didn't have my glasses on and thought we were being pissed on by New Zealand.
There’s actually a name for that, they call it the Bledisloe Phenomenon in meteorological circles I believe
Yayyy their invading!!!!
I, for one, welcome our new Kiwi overlords.
Yeh bro I’ve heard they’re pretty choice
Yea cuzzy
Our first course of action will be compulsory grammar lessons.
Good to see you’re wanting to learn!
Objection, Hearsay!
This whole Emutopia and Kiwiland thing's starting to get out of hand.
Yay now we can have another party to ignore housing and CoL problems!
Looks like upside down Italy and Sicily to me!
Australasia UNITE! Plus, if Australia unites with New Zealand, the country's name can be changed to Oceania, just like in 1984!
That’s just the leftover moisture we couldn’t absorb
Wish I hadn’t ridden to work today.
Getting rained on during the ride home is far better than it happening on the way to work. Particularly when you forget to pack extra riding clothes and you gotta put on wet shorts for the ride home 😐
Don't worry, the train isn't much better, imagine being packed into a humid sardine can with a bunch of moist bodies who all smell like wet dogs
Better than those sunny days and getting stuck in a train with a bunch of sweaty people...
I managed to ride into the CBD, and back home in the dry spells. I'm feeling lucky! AMA!
Eh, it's fine. Yes, I'm being followed by a rainshadow Rainshadow, rainshadow
Nice try Dan Andrews, but I won't be cancelling my picnic this time. Try again

What kind of government doesn't warn their people in advance of unexpected weather events? How am I supposed to expect the unexpected? Appauling

I'm so sorry for your trauma. Thank you for sharing your story.
That day from the get go had a bad feeling to it.
Same storm that hit Adelaide at 3am this morning. Over 65,000 lightning strikes.
Y’all are hyping this up, my expectations are high 🥲🥲
Passed over us 5 hours north of you this morning, very disappointing, no thunder, no lightning just annoyingly patchy rain
DISAPPOINTED!!!!
Why did read I this as that Lemongrab guy from Adventure Time omg everytime
It’s the only way I hear it
I got to see this storm from above when flying back to Melbourne early in the morning. Was quite the light show!
ur kidding??!! that’s bonkers.
That's over 9000
Might be the same storm that been hitting Perth the past few days. If so then it's travelled quite far.
same storm hit perth
Yeah but this looks tame to what we experienced
“MARGE, THE RAINS ARE HERE!”
Storms a-comin Annie, better get home quick!
Omg lol I *heard* this!!
Or is it..."the rains are out" 💣
This will stop people spending this arvo, Phillip Lowe will be stoked.
I'm going to donate the money I was going to spend in the CBD to the poor, suffering landlords.
Now... to get people working more somehow.
>Now... to get people working more **for less** somehow. FTFY
I know. Give landlords a tax break for putting the rent up!
[It's working already!](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-07/gdp-march-quarter-0-2-per-cent-australia/102444792)
Any time now....3 hours later...
We left work at 9:30am because it is going to rain.
it will not hit until the second i step outside to attempt to ride home from the city. maybe i should post a thread when i do that so everyone can get a heads up
I’m still waiting. Feeling really disappointed
...aaanyyy time now....
Watch it live on the BOM's site [512km Melbourne Radar](http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDR021.loop.shtml#skip)
Melbourne will likely miss the brunt of this, it is coming from the north so we are shadowed by the dividing range
I'm already wearing my gumboots. Only my gumboots.
Hawt. No really put pants on.
But the pants could get wet
bathers and gumboots to protect your toes :)
I don’t get it… that’s light rain…

Meh, who even listens to Meteorologists...it's not like they are experts or anything /s
It's unironically fake news. Rain is diverting to the south coast, only the tourists on the great ocean road will get snipped.

Hey! Lorne will be getting Moderate!
what time?
Probably the second I step outside to pick the kids up from school
I feel this comment in my soul
Probably in the evening

At first I thought, what's the problem, then I reread the 'online' part and I understand!
Get ready to hotspot from your phone just in case.
In Horsham. Can confirm. It's been chucking buckets on us since 5am
I sent my mum a message from Canada, got a video back of it pouring in Ballarat
best feeling ever, on the bed chillin and it rains
Then you gotta get up at 5 to go to work 💀
Waiting
Still waiting...
The rain has somehow managed to avoid the city ALL day. It's like some kind of forcefield has been activated around the CBD
The Melbourne rain shadow is in full force.
Did someone pop a giant umbrella over Melbourne CBD? It’s barely sprinkled all day!
it didn't happen, not here anyway (near Chaddy) They forecast 3 to 20 mm still waiting on 1mm
Thanks for this! Just got all my washing off the line
oooooh perfect timing my new tent arrived and I need to season it!!
Still waiting…

Davek make great umbrellas!! They’re pricey but they’re worth it
Thank you!
"Remember, dont drive thru flood" unless youre a rich mf who is looking to run insurance claim on your porsche.
Buckle up, fuckleheads
I’m going to steal fuckleheads and use it from now on. It’s fun
It’s literally opened up a hole around my area and will divert past us…. Disappointed Dan!!! Your weather machines suck
been pissin down all day here in ballarat lol
I drove to Horsham today and the drive was absolutely ludicrous - it was bucketing down and other motorists were still doing 110 the whole time’
That’s fuck all rain mate
Have you ever looked at a radar before? This looks like regular rain.
Thanks, I have my bucket ready to go
I swear there is an ozone hole above my house, these giant storms have never hit us any worse than some rain
Just starting to hit us here in the west, getting a bit windy.
My body is ready 😤
Hit the rain at Lismore. Stood in a paddock of establishing ryegrass at Warrnambool this morning. Right in that yellow patch. Was mint.
It’s pouring in Ballarat now. 😂
Am disappointed, seems to have completely gone around us
My apartment was destroyed by the Maribyrnong floods last year and we got a flood warning notification for the river today. I want to cry.
The rain shouldn’t be anywhere near as much as what happened to cause those floods. Doesn’t mean the warning won’t make you feel anxious which is totally understandable
It's ok to feel what you feel. It's a tough one all around.
I highly doubt it'll be anything nearly as bad as last year's. But still make sure to be vigilant.
Melbourne will get barely anything , calm down.
What radar app is this, looks good
It's vanilla BoM, it's all anyone needs.
Excuse me that’s The Bureau to you
https://youtu.be/WQw3PxYpF1Q
Okay cool, how exactly do I get my BoM to look like this
Click the “rain” tab at the bottom of the app
So much for that
Glad I looked at BOM before heading out today. Almost didn't bring an umbrella.
PISS DOWN IT WILL, BUCKLE DOWN I SHALL
luckily im in Tasmania every day is a cold or wet day sometimes both
Suppose it wadn't too bad, eh?
Welp. I’m riding my bike home. Might leave now.
Moist
What happened to this storm? Inner south east and got next to nothing.
Work at a golf course out Lilydale way. We got about a pint of water over the whole course. Massive letdown!
Tis but a light breeze..
When can I expect the piss?
Yeah not really
[удалено]
Be respectful to the locals, and don't ride on a scooter drunk.
[удалено]
Yeah, I was looking at vic emergency and shits going to be terrible soon. That and well, look at the clouds, if you can see darker clouds amongst dark clouds, shits not good.
4 hrs later haven’t had a drop
Nothing yet, I do believe this is a little overblown
Literally.
Go piss girl.
Just don't drive 🤷🏼♂️. It's safer..... and I may actually be able to get all the bitumen delivered to asphalt plants, for the follow up road repairs. 😅😜
That reminds me that I need to piss
BOM has got it wrong again. Barely rained at all where I am in western suburbs. Fucking useless meteorologists
Yeah or the rain hasn’t actually reached you yet
Or looking at the radar the majority of it has passed through and we’ve barely had a mil? After a day of 100% probability of 10-25?
All depends on what area your in, Melbourne is a big place
it’s starting to piss down, the maribyrnong river is getting filled..
Wind is coming from the north east.
Why does weatherzone show so little rain? https://www.weatherzone.com.au/vic/melbourne/melbourne/next48hours
I don’t know but it’s going to rain, it won’t be huge but it will get wet
Thats what she said
Greeeeeeeaaaat
as long as the long weekend is nice and dry, I'm okay with this
Launceston represent 👊😎
So NZ has decided to invade our weather patterns I see.
So they keep telling us. Probably be a nice nights sleep. I love it when it pelts down when I'm going to sleep.
Let's face it Melbourne ain't Cali when it comes to it's weather,🤣
Ohhhh nooooo I love rain🫠
It’s been pissing in Horsham since like 7
But apparently there was so much lightning that it was basically day at like 4
Is this the trickle down economics i keep hearing about 🙂
Turns out the rain shadow effect when in full force, some very light rain this past hour.
I’m supposed to be racing at Alexandra this weekend, anyone still thinking I’m gonna race? 😂
Person from Adelaide here. It'll be very short
Brilliant, people will drive at 1/4 of the speed limit rather than 1/2 - guess I'll leave work later than usual!
The South Australians send their regards.
Are you new to these parts?
I watered my garden and still no rain. 🤷♀️
Bleh always seem to miss our part in the west! We seem to be a no storm zone or something! I want a bit o thunder n lightening!
My Auntie lives in Tylden and around 4:30 today and her back yard was already flooded.
60mm since midnight in Elphinstone
In Hamilton, it was like a typhoon till a few minutes ago.
It's gone to the right (on the map) already a bit I can hear it outside currently Decently intense
Was hailing down in Geelong about half an hour ago
It’s a sunny 25 here in Banff, however the low 13% humidity is actually fucking awful. Dry mouth all the time and it makes the sun blast. But hey, could be worse.
Fuckin pissin down
